Hi, i think i might have fed my betta a little bit more of the pea ( my bad) than I intended to and the belly is a little bloated. My little buddy is still active and curious, is swimming around and still acts as if he wants to eat. I need your help! One of my bettas has not pooped in almost 3 weeks now. He has been in a 5 gallon tank for over a year without any issues. I'm not seeing the pinecone symptom and he's swimming just fine and he's still making bubble nests. He still has an appetite which I find strange considering how bloated he is. I did fast him for 3 days, tried the pea, daphnia, and Betta Fix over the last 3 weeks. His belly is getting bigger!
@@EverydayAquatics Yes, I tried that last night. I transferred 1 gallon of his aquarium water into a separate container, added 1 tbsp of epsom salt, and let him swim around for 25-30 minutes. Hello, I got a betta fish about a week ago and he’s doing great but I noticed the past couple days he seems bloated above his anal fins. My friends who have been fish owners and our local fish store have warned me about over feeding and that I only need to feed him 3 pellets a day so that’s what I’ve been doing. I’ve never seen him eat yet since bringing him home but his pellets are always gone by the end of the day so he must be eating them right? A couple times i have noticed a very thin string of poop hanging off of him by his anal fins. Like it almost looks like a hair. Could this still be constipation? I check for the signs of dropsy and he doesn’t look like a pinecone. He’s not a very active guy but he’s also still new so it’s hard to say what’s his normal personality. Hell still swim around every now and then but spends most of his day near the top (not gasping) of the tank (he has a favourite corner). Is it constipation or was he starved at the pet store when I first got him and this is what a normal betta looks like?

@@ClaudineLo I’m sorry to say that the betta passed away :( he only lived 2 weeks. Sadly, I have no idea what the issue was. I got a female betta after that and she’s still with us and almost 1yr. You can try epsom salt bath. It can act as a muscle relaxant and it reduces swelling. Have you checked whether the fish has pinecone scales? Just to make sure it isn't dropsy because bloating is also a symptom of dropsy.
I need your help! My beta fish is pretty young, she is over fed I believe but. She’s been bloated for over 4-5 days now, I even tried the salts and I might use the oatmeal method. What should I do? I dont want to keep starving my baby.. and is it normal for it to go this long? Thank you♥️

My sister's fish died a few minutes ago. I'm trying to figure out why. I don't know mu h about betta's. But she has a large stomach and I'm pretty sure she isn't pregnant. Hello! My betta fish is very active and swims all day! He is perfectly healthy but one thing is that his belly is slighty swollen, and his poops are very small and crumby or strings of it. I tried fasting and it didnt really help. Ive tried different pellets. The ones i gave him where a little has to digest but the new ones i gave are easier and arent helping much either. It isnt extreme bloat but i would like to solve it so it doesnt progress.
I feed him about 3 soaked pellets a day and bloodworms here and there, i change up the food with betta crumbles to help him digest which helped a bit, i cut down the food a bit though.
his body near the tail is slightly curved and a blattered belly he is pooping and he still manages to stay active he resurfaces but sometimes hes on his side floating on surface/ground
Our betta is very fat looking, and having a hard time swimming. I tried the blanched and skinned pea, more periodic water changes, and raising the temp a small amount up to 80. Nothing seems to be working?
Mine was fully active but suddenly she stoppd swimming.. 2 days I saw her resting in bottom of the tank and only came up for breathing.. I did a water change too. Today morning I found her fully bloted.. But not having a curved back or pine scale.. I m not feeding her from yesterday.. She is still resting in tank bottom.. What it is... She moves in between to different places.. Sometimes lifting her back up and head down and resting
How much do you feed normally? It could be just bloated, fast for 2-3 days and see if the bloating reduces. Some fish sleeps with head down, so that's fine.
Queen114 what happened? Mine is doing the same thing it's a boy tho. I think I over fed it or it had problems because of my 90 percent water change. Dangit! He's such an amazing little fish I don't want him to diy but I need to do something to help him. UGH! It's a different story every time I watch a different video.
No more now.. After few days the pine scales appeared and eventually back got curved.. After 2 weeks of struggling passed away.. Better to start treatment now please
My betta fish was constipated so I didn’t feed her for 2 days. She was able to poop but I notice she’s bloated on one side of her body. Could she still be constipated?
Sir, My betta is not pooping around 7-8 days. As per your recommendation I did not give any food to him and 3 days ago I gave him 1/4 of a boiled pea and also gave epsom salt bath but nothing is happening. What can I do now sir please suggest something.
Sometimes betta poops when you're not around and it's hard to spot their poop if there are life plants in the tank. Is your betta bloated or just not pooping?
Great video! Unfortunately my betta fish is bloated and won't eat at all anymore. It's been several days without eating and I have even tried the peas multiple times and it just won't eat it. I fear it might be too late for me.
My male betta has had a little bump on his tummy right above the ventral/pelvic fins. It's not a large bump, it looks more like the bump that the white fish has in this video th-cam.com/video/xDoQMDOGnsU/w-d-xo.html He got the bump (or I started noticing it) maybe a month or so ago. These days he gets Northfin Betta Bits (3-4 pellets twice a day). Is this bloat, or is he perfectly normal? He eats his food and swims around and flares at me.
First picture white fish? For me that looks pretty okay. Although I'd say you as a owner should gauge it more and notice its activity - those are also good indicators. But if it still acts like a healthy betta - chances are it'd be fine :) EDIT: One thing you can do is fasting the betta (there's a tendency for new owner to over feed them) 1-2 days and see if they go back to their size. Fasting - will be fine. Aquarium fish tend to overeat than undereat.
Our betta is just over a year old. She is a female. Super bloated. We have done the Epson salt bath as well as the pea. Her behavior is normal she just looks like she is gonna blow up. What can we do next
Was there a male betta around her? It could be possible that the female betta is egg bound. Did she eat the pea and poo? Does she have problem with swimming, feeling lethargic, or pinecone scales?
@@EverydayAquatics no male betta, she did eat the pea and no poo, seems to be acting fine and no pinecone. going on 2 weeks. we have done 2 epson baths and only peas for 4 days
Yes we faster her for 3 days to start with, then tried a single pea, then the next the epson bath with another pea, and still nothing so I fasted her again for another 3 days and nothing so I did another epson bath and have only give her 1 pea yesterday and today. Still no change in her appearance or her activity level. She is acting normal shes just looks fat
@@jerilynn3887 Have you checked the water parameter to see if the water is suitable for betta? You can also try mirror training, my betta often poos when flaring.
You can fast the betta first and observe to see if the bloating goes away. Only male betta fish will make bubble nest, and it female rarely makes the bubble nest. Are you sure yours is a female?
I'm certain it's a female but there is a possibility she isn't but her fins are small especially the one on the bottom that sticks down and she's not as feathery like males but I could be wrong
@@jamesmitchell8806 I can't tell either 😅. Do you see the white egg spot below the betta? Just check with my female betta, the white egg spot is pretty obvious. Anyway, if the bloating doesn't go away for like 2 days, you can give her epsom salt bath.
Well thank you I just want her to live cuz she is such a pretty fish and I'd feel bad but I guess it's good I care this much cuz some people just throw them in a cold bowl with like 2 plants and a rock but hopefully she o he haha recovers I'll keep you updated if I can again thank you
I've been feeding my betta fish more than 10 pellets a day since I got it cause maybe I was too excited 😭 and this afternoon I noticed that he's fat! I Watched many videos about bettas and realized that I have been overfeeding my betta. saw pictures of bettas that has some bladder issues (i forgot what it's called) But my betta doesn't look like any of those pics. It's not fat on one side, he just looks fat/bloated. Is my betta suffering? will it survive? Is it okay if I don't feed him for 2 or 3 days cause I saw suggestions to fast him for 2 or 3 days? Any suggestions on what I can do to get him back in a better shape? Thanks!
Yeah, just fast for 2-3 days to see if your betta gets better. You can also try to feed pea while fasting, it's a laxative for the betta. If it's still bloated, you can try epsom salt bath for the betta.
Betta is indeed carnivorous. But here's our thoughts on it: - For majority of users it has worked okay. Controlling quantity - a small amount is important. - Logically speaking, pea is just harmless fiber passing through the digestive tract. my male betta has a bit of a belly. i have him in a community tank so for feeding time he always eats more than he should i dont want him to get any fatter so i thought abt removing him everyday i feed my fish but i dont want to stress him either :/
What other fishes are feeding? Betta usually only feeds from the top, so you can try soaking the pellet so that it sinks or feed something that sinks to the bottom.
@@EverydayAquatics i usually just feed some frozen food like brine shrimp. and sadly hes really food motivated he will swim down to the tank to pick up the food he might of missed. but it results with less food for my kuhli loaches. i also have a small school of rasboras

I don't know what to do :( I have a male betta and he's had a swollen belly for like three days He's not eating but he's moving around pretty well. The bump hasn't gotten any bigger but underneath its kind of white His scales aren't pineconing though Ive given him pieces of a pea but he's not eating those either. And his lower body kind of floats up. Is it dropsy or constipation or anything else? I've had him for three years now :( I've also fasted him for 3 days and the bloating did not go down
@@preface6612 it really comforts me knowing that we went through the same thing at the same time. They’re in a better place now. that’s all that matters:)
My betta is an older fish, and he has a lot of bloating. We treated him with maracyn and then API general cure (in that order) and I think it was hard on his kidneys. I think he has dropsy, but a lot of sources are saying it's a bacterial infection, which wouldn't make sense in my case. What do I do? He had some swim bladder issues and was stuck at the top of the tank, now he's stuck at the bottom after 2 Epsom Salt baths for 15 minutes each. His stomach is yellower at the bottom, and his stomach is about double the size it should be. I'm really worried about him, but I am willing to get him any medication necessary. What do I do? As always, you're always such a help!
Does he have pinecone scale and curved spine? If you observe that he is shivering a lot, it could be a bacterial infection. How long has he been sick? It seems like you have tried treating with antibiotic and epsom salt bath, so I'm really out of suggestions. I have treated dropsy in my bettas as well, and I have had not a single success😥. I can only suggest that if you don't see any improvement, maybe it would be good to euthanize him as to not prolong the pain.
@@EverydayAquatics He has pineconing, and not much of a curved spine but his fins are clamped and sagging, so maybe? I was thinking, when he started showing dropsy symptoms I put his second 6-week treatment off. Maybe this is a reoccurrence of the parasite he had? He has a spot that resembles an egg spot that I never noticed before, so I'm starting to think this has something to do with his parasite. I'm worried his kidneys can't handle the treatment though...
@@samanthabratley7561 Hmm, since he has already developed pinecone scales, it means his internal organs are failing. So, he is getting worse with or without treatment.

When we picked her up,she had blue water. We did t really know what it meant but now I searched it up and I guess it means she's medicated. So that's probably why

How many pellets are you feeding per day? You can try feeding food like brine shrimp, bloodworms that have fibers to help its digestive system.
I feed him about 3 soaked pellets a day and bloodworms here and there, i change up the food with betta crumbles to help him digest which helped a bit, i cut down the food a bit though.
what else can i do to help my overfed betta
Stop feeding for 2-3 days, if betta still bloated after 2 days or so, you can give epsom salt bath
@@EverydayAquatics is it normal for him to have a slightly curved body?
@@sauce5579 it's not normal. Do you notice any other physical changes in your betta?
his body near the tail is slightly curved and a blattered belly he is pooping and he still manages to stay active he resurfaces but sometimes hes on his side floating on surface/ground
hes more active than yesterday
Our betta is very fat looking, and having a hard time swimming. I tried the blanched and skinned pea, more periodic water changes, and raising the temp a small amount up to 80. Nothing seems to be working?
Have you tried fasting for a day or 2 before? You can also try epsom salt bath.
I got so scared tysm for this💗
love your videos. Subscribed .
On quick it over feeding can I die or no?
Yea if fish is overfed - it cause them to be unhealthy and hence reduce their lifespan (just think of obesity in human).
My betta fish was constipated so I didn’t feed her for 2 days. She was able to poop but I notice she’s bloated on one side of her body. Could she still be constipated?
It's hard to tell, maybe monitor 1 more day.
Will try this.. Big Thanks ! ❤️
Great video. Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
Is your betta bloated or just not pooping?
did you say 4 spoons of epsom salt per gallon? that seems like a LOT
4 - 5 teaspoons
Great video! Unfortunately my betta fish is bloated and won't eat at all anymore. It's been several days without eating and I have even tried the peas multiple times and it just won't eat it. I fear it might be too late for me.

My male betta has had a little bump on his tummy right above the ventral/pelvic fins. It's not a large bump, it looks more like the bump that the white fish has in this video th-cam.com/video/xDoQMDOGnsU/w-d-xo.html
He got the bump (or I started noticing it) maybe a month or so ago.
But if it still acts like a healthy betta - chances are it'd be fine :)
EDIT: One thing you can do is fasting the betta (there's a tendency for new owner to over feed them) 1-2 days and see if they go back to their size. Fasting - will be fine. Aquarium fish tend to overeat than undereat.
Im gunna have to try the pea idea tomorrow
@@jerilynn3887 Have you tried to fast the betta for 2-3 days? It helps betta bowel to move properly.
So my betta is making a bubble nest which is obviously a sign of being egg bound but she also seems constipated what should I do
You can fast the betta first and observe to see if the bloating goes away. Only male betta fish will make bubble nest, and it female rarely makes the bubble nest. Are you sure yours is a female?
I'm certain it's a female but there is a possibility she isn't but her fins are small especially the one on the bottom that sticks down and she's not as feathery like males but I could be wrong
th-cam.com/video/Q2mbB1N_ejk/w-d-xo.html here is a link for a video
I Watched many videos about bettas and realized that I have been overfeeding my betta. saw pictures of bettas that has some bladder issues (i forgot what it's called)
But my betta doesn't look like any of those pics.
@@EverydayAquatics thank you!
This is so helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
Very helpful, thanks
You're welcome!
I’ve seen a lot of people say not to give a betta peas, so I’m a bit conflicted
Betta is indeed carnivorous. But here's our thoughts on it:
- For majority of users it has worked okay. Controlling quantity - a small amount is important.
- Logically speaking, pea is just harmless fiber passing through the digestive tract.
But, we've seen other users and discussions about owners with issue, so if you're concerned you could test it in this sequence instead:
- You could try fasting it first for 3-4 days.
- Mirror training
- Feeding it daphnia which is an insect high in fibre (if you can get one near pond/fish store etc).
We just recommended pea since it's easily available compare to daphnia for most beginner aquarists.

my male betta has a bit of a belly. i have him in a community tank so for feeding time he always eats more than he should i dont want him to get any fatter so i thought abt removing him everyday i feed my fish but i dont want to stress him either :/
@@imalemon1050 maybe try to put a separate tank inside the main tank when feeding.

I have a male betta and he's had a swollen belly for like three days
He's not eating but he's moving around pretty well. The bump hasn't gotten any bigger but underneath its kind of white
His scales aren't pineconing though
Ive given him pieces of a pea but he's not eating those either. And his lower body kind of floats up. Is it dropsy or constipation or anything else? I've had him for three years now :(

The thumbnail editor wanted a "shocked face" but probably think I wasn't handsome enough. But - since it can be misleading, we'll get another thumbnail out instead.
