"We are saddened by the news today that our Compadre, Dusty Hill, has passed away in his sleep at home in Houston, TX. We, along with legions of ZZ Top fans around the world, will miss your steadfast presence, your good nature and enduring commitment to providing that monumental bottom to the ‘Top'. We will forever be connected to that "Blues Shuffle in C.”
You will be missed greatly, amigo.

This was from the era when ZZ Top was the greatest small venue band in North America.
Tres Hombres and Fandango are easily two of the ten best albums in the history of rock.

"Dad, why isn't there anyone else like ZZ Top"...... my daughter, the genius, at about age 9. About 1997. I bought my first ZZ Top 8-track about 1972. And have all their library.... and until she asked me I hadn't ever wondered - I just knew. There ain't no one out there gonna ever replace these boys. My friends.... TODAY is the day the music died. I'm so... so sad.

The Rockpalast concerts staged by German TV in the early 80s (this is where this footage was taken) really were something. A live broadcast. Three bands in a row, each giving a full length concert. A good mix of established bands and upcoming new artists and always worth it to stay up til waaayy after midnight.
It was a good time to be young in the 80s. The downside is that your heroes of back then are starting to leave now. RIP Dusty Hill

+nyterpfan Later Top was geared to radio play. There is a difference between what we are told is "good" or "popular", and what is in fact well done music. Maybe I wouldn't have taken flack from aminor 1950 and Danny Maness if my comment had been stated like yours. Basically said the same thing. You were just more politically correct.

My first concert at 16 years old, was Rory Gallagher (RIP Rory, Lou, Rod. thanks) opening for these guys in '73. It was about six months before Tres Hombres came out. Back when they were one of the most badass blues bands that ever was. Straw hats, jeans, no beards(but Frank. lol), and BG in a white tshirt w/ pack of Marlboros rolled up in the sleeve(lol). Blues rock, slide guitar nut ever since.

No matter how many years go by, they never seem to age and the music is just as much fun to listen to as it was 20+ years ago !

Twice I got to see Lynerd Skynerd open for ZZ Top in Austin. Once at Frank Erwin center and the other was outdoors. It was great.
