If I could go back and see one band at their peak it'd probably be ZZ Top in the late 70s. These guys just crushed live shows in such a unique way. Some of the crunchiest rock I've ever heard.
Drummer in a great 3 piece rock n roll outfit has lots of open space to fill. Neil Peart, aka the Professor, put huge kit and amazing flourishes into that space- Frank B puts the tightest and tastiest grooves.
Yeah, that's a fact! He's got tons of chops but picks and chooses when to add the fills etc. only rarely to add a little spice to his really solid rockin; grooves. Never overplays. He and Dusty together lay it down so well for Billy G. !
Saw these guys 5 or 6 times over the years, and they never disappointed. No "no shows" , no equipment fuckups, never anything more than professional and awesome every show. RIP Dusty, we'll miss you buddy.

They had been gigging at the local arena-type venue. Our band did acceptable versions of La Grange and Tush, but the leader decided, for whatever reason, not to call them. Instead of getting my plea to open with La Grange, I got to sit with all three of the boys between those two sets. A real dream come true since I had at least two of their albums on the road with me and I loved their music. Sensational band. Superb group of gentlemen. RIP Dusty.
I have seen this band 4 times, including this tour here. Without question the most professional band/musicians. Always show up sober. Always play at their top notch best. Always put on just the right amount of showmanship. They just nail it!!

It seems that Billy has in his mind that he can get up there and play a version of a song we all have been used to hearing and he plays it in a way that doesn't even come close to sounding the way that rocked us, doesn't even sound like the same song, took that special "feeling" right out of it. And one time I saw them they had just come out with a new album, and didn't play one song from it. Didn't play even one of their biggest songs beside La Grange. Took away the bluesy rock and roll fire I once had in my heart for them.
Motorhead, Rush, Cream, The Police. There's plenty of great 3 piece bands out there. You know, you can just say that you like ZZ Top without having to elevated them to some mythical level of "best", which of course doesn't exists as music is subjective.

I saw the 1980 tour in Houston. I knew a fellow who ran a ticket agency in the Underground downtown. He got me into the second row. My hearing was never the same. Absolutely amazing show. The venue, The Summit, is now Joel Osteen’s church. Hopefully the Holy Rock and Roll ghosts are keeping things real there.
ZZ Top put on the very last show in The Summit before it became Lakewood....I was there! They brought out an extra drum kit for one song and let then governor Rick Perry drum for one song along with Frank. A bunch of democrats got pissed and walked out! Good Times!
The videos never do justice to what it was like to be there in person. I saw them in 2011, Solomons Island MD, fuzzy guitars and all, and the sound hit your body so hard not only were you not touching the ground but you could feel your ribcage compressing and expanding with the sound waves. Wasn't even that loud, it was heavy and visceral, almost like the shockwave of an explosion from a distance but it was constant.
It doesn't get much better than this.❤❤❤❤❤ My favorite is Beer Drinkers and Hellraisers, but this is a close second. Or it's a three-way tie with Blue Jean Blues. 😂😂❤❤❤❤❤
I always had a hard time playing this song but that's because I play it in standard tuning and I just found out from watching this video that BFG tunes the guitar up a whole step and the drops the sixth string a step lol so much easier. Now I need to buy another guitar for this tuning. This was their prime. So good.
