    Actually, chewing of gums is legal in Singapore. It is the sales and import of chewing gum that is strictly control. And it is equally effective in ceasing the sticking of chewed gums on the floor on the walkways, and in the buses and trains.

    That being said, all the fines are for bad stuff like pee in the lifts, not flushing the public toilets, vandalism, spitting etc….all these are ‘bad’ stuff….in order to make the country clean n safe, we fine. So again, if you don’t do these bad stuff ….why worry?

    The COE is not balloted. It is auctioned to the highest bidders. It has gone beyond SGD100k just recently.
    By the way, the car population in Singapore is capped at zero growth, meaning one car has to be taken off the road for one COE to be available for auction.
    Crazy, right?

    3:20 - No... The red part is just the Northern part of Singapore. And what he is saying is Singapore is divided roughly into East, West, North, South and Central.
    6:50 - 99yrs lease is necessary to 'recycle' public land... With SG being so small... Imagine if EVERYONE own land... within a few generation... SG would run out of land to build houses for the common, average folks. Therefore while its hard to understand for folks that came from countries that is not land limited... In SG, this is how common average folks like me could get affordable housing... even if only for 99yrs... Which my son could live to his 70s should he decided to stay.
    7:51 - NO... AirBnB is NOT allow in public housing after a lot of complaints years ago. You can rent out parts of the units (1 room or 2 room) or even the whole apartment unit (maybe you are leaving to work Overseas)... But approval must be seeked from the Housing and Development Board (HDB) and rules as and regulations must be followed.

  • @hloc
    @hloc 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

    21:40 - No... What he is referring to is the opposite of what you are suggesting. In Singapore, there is no possibility to have an ethnic enclave... Since every public housing estate (where the majority of Singaporean and Permanent Residents lives), the housing availability is based on the percentage of the population.
    As an example. If an apartment block has a 100 unit. Based on Singapore's population makeup... 70 unit will be for the Chinese, 15 unit will be for the Malay and 10 will be for the Indian with what remaining left for the other races and ethnic. Therefore wherever you go, all public housing estate represents the population makeup of Singapore.
    The issue he is referring to... Is how hard for a non Chinese home owner to sell or buy a new home somewhere else... Especially when the ethnic quota is full and that non Chinese seller or buyer couldn't easily sell/buy his or her unit because the correct ethnic person is required.

    • @hujron
      @hujron 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Usually its the opposite. Minorities find it easier to get property purchases or transfers approved, and units are often cheaper for them

    • @hloc
      @hloc 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@hujron Not always... When 70+% of the population is ethnic Chinese... Minority who has to sell or buy from another minority... basically, in such cases... You exclude 70% of the buying pool..

    • @Hellow68
      @Hellow68 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @hloc Not necessarily. When you are selling your house you can see how much quota is left for your area, like maybe: Chinese:1, Malay:0, Indian:2. In this case you can see your house to a Chinese or Indian family but not a Malay family (as other houses in your area are sold and bought, the ethnic quota changes). So minorities are not locked out of 70% of the population.

Even if you live in the West of Singapore and need to travel to the East everyday for work... The worst will be an almost 2 hour train ride to Work... Yes, it's inconvenient... When Marina Bay was first created artificially, it was part of the sea. Hence you are right to think that it is filled with seawater. But when land was reclaimed creating two tails and joined by the dam (Marina Barrage), the seawater gradually becomes freshwater because rains collected all over the island gets channelled to Marina Bay. The analogy is much like adding freshwater to a cup of saltwater until it overflows. Eventually, it becomes a cup of freshwater.
    This was Singapore's ingenious idea to create more reservoirs on the island. Since the island is so small, there's a limit to how much land can be reserved for reservoirs to supply the much needed water to the residents. Currently, we are still buying water from Malaysia because local supplies aren't enough. But Malaysia is an unreliable source because they have arm-twisted Singapore into paying higher water prices in the past even though contracts have been signed. So Singapore found it a matter of national security to be as self-sufficient as possible when it comes to water source. Hence the idea to turn part of the sea into a reservoir.

    Hi there and watching from 🇲🇾. Another history quick fact was that Singapore was part of the Johor Sultanate territory and was ceded to the British via Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819 because of some Royal sibling rivalry for the throne to be Sultan at that time. The old name of Singapore was known as Temasik. Lastly, 🇲🇾 was also once part of the 1967 currency swap agreement with 🇸🇬 and 🇧🇳, which the stupid no brainer old previous govt in 🇲🇾back out from the treaty, which is why only the Bruneian dollar is of equal value to the Singaporean dollar till today. Malaysia currency was once known as the Malaysian dollar and not the current Ringgit, which has a label nickname....SHRINKggit...LOL
    because of its dropping in value in recent times.

    They avoided an important point: Israel's close relationship with Singapore.
    When Singapore became independent in 1965, they asked Israel for help - to train and initiate their military. Singapore sees itself as a tiny nation surrounded by muslim countries - exactly like Israel. Singapore has a special military ties to Israel, this is a controversial fact that people don't like to talk about.

    • @dubu007
      @dubu007 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      it is nothing controversial, they were one of the few who wanted to help when most others abandon us, and it is also a fact that Indonesian warships came all the way to the seas near our East Coast during those times, and that we were kicked out by Malaysia. But situation changes from late 70s onwards and our military strategies changed as well.

      Singapore asked several countries for help, including of course the UK itself. We literally begged their military to stay to no anvil. Only Israel was willing to help us. We kept this fact under wraps for the initial decades due to sensitivities with our neighbours, but we are pretty open about it since. There are plenty of literature about it.

    Singapore is indeed a beautiful, modern, clean and green city but the cities in China which are much larger are probably the most modern, and yes, clean, green and beautiful too. For example, there are still not many electric vehicles on the roads in Singapore nor are there any driverless cars or buses but there are plenty in China already, so it is a little slower compared to cities in China which are much bigger.

      It takes a lot to stabilise the technology of driverless cars. The fact that a country rolls them out first doesn’t mean they have perfected it, it means they are willing to bet on their people’s lives for the sake of technology advancement. China promoted new tech like driverless vehicles as they needed these new companies to advance their economies and make more money through exports out of China. Fact that they actually don’t care about their people’s lives or jobs and just want to show how advanced they are tells a lot about a country’s vulnerable pride. Btw, China is still the largest coal consumer in 2022, hence, no way are they clean and green, they did make some efforts in installing more green energy but the majority of their energy consumption is still the dirty and polluting type. Sorry to break your bubble!

      @@lucyfiniarel2347 Singaporean shouldn’t just care about keeping up with the Chinese because Singapore’s government need to answer to their people and can’t waste money on projects like for example..high speed trains as it’s not practical for us and China can afford to spend these money on the top infrastructure but recently we heard many of their local governments ran out of money and still need to pay top dollars to maintain their train system which wasn’t making money in many province. Meaning, their government is good at presenting state of the art infrastructure even if they make a loss. However they can continue to do that because the government don’t need to answer to their people. I hope you are mature enough to understand it’s not realistic to keep up with the Chinese nor is keeping up a fiscally sound idea. We need to be fiscally responsible and just do our best to advance Singapore in our own way.
