TODAY'S GUEST:
Meet Brian Kennet. He is from the UK and has been living in Singapore for 16 years. With a Philippine wife and 5 kids, Brian is a true lover of Singapore's food scene. While walking across Joo Chiat, he shared with me the best places to eat out in the neighborhood, why he considers Singapore a safe place despite being targeted for his origin, and what a foreigner could face in Singapore when dealing with funerals. Enjoy!

Most Americans find it hard to retire comfortably amid economy downtrend. Some have close to nothing going into retirement, my question is, will you pay off mortgage as a near-retiree, or spread money for cashflow, to afford lifestyle after retirement?
as most investing-related questions, the answer is, it depends.. my best suggestion is to consider advisory management
Agreed the role of advisors can only be overlooked, but not denied. I remember in early 2020, during covid-outbreak, my portfolio worth around $300k took a slight fall, apparently due to the pandemic crash, at once I consulted an advisor in order to avoid panic-selling. As of today, my account has yielded big fat yields, and leverages on 7-figure, only cos I delegate my excesses right.
Certainly, there are a handful of experts in the field. I've experimented with a few over the past years, but I've stuck with ‘’AILEEN GERTRUDE TIPPY” for about five years now, and her performance has been consistently impressive. She’s quite known in her field, look-her up.
Hey Brian so sorry for your experience here , am happy to see you are got your life back and now has a wonderful family. You are a great inspiration. Keep living it!
Bless you. As they say time is a great healer. 16 years later we still celebrate Mum's birthday every year. Half of her is here and half in UK, so she's still there with us no matter what. But life has to continue and here is now home, kids are all growing so fast and such. It was purely a culture shock of such a newbie to Singapore!!! Thanks for the lovely words.
Great to see Brian on the channel again. Love this guy.
Awwww thank you! What can I say. Humbled!
This guy is the best. Keep interviewing him, please
Well, that seriously made my day - thank you!!! How about Pod Cast??? Does that sound good?
Brian nails it again, the mood on this one very different but an emotional rollercoaster none the less! An appearance from Julian at Mutt Motorcycles was nice to see! Even Maurizio from Papi's gets a mention! Great work guys!
So sorry that Brian had such a negative experience with funeral parlours. As a local, even I was quite surprised that such appalling conditions existed here. When I handled my dad's funeral 30 years ago...I went to a well-run fully air-conditioned parlour along Lavendar Street...all services were on menus.
Is that the Singapore casket
It was a shocker sadly! Really could have done with some help when that happened!!! Bless you!!!
would b good if the post is still there sowe can know how to cater such services for foreigners, grieving is already difficult for everyone
Dear Brian, very very sorry to hear about your horrifying experience. It shouldn't have been like that at all.
I'm glad everything's going on well with you and family❤🙏
This very bad n insensitive funeral provider company must be brought to task for such bad service!
So sorry to hear that Brian's experience of a death/funeral here was negative - I didn't realise our very functional process could be traumatizing for foreigners. And being a non-pub-going S'porean, I'm quite shocked to hear about racist attacks at Chijmes! This shouldn't be condoned in S'pore or hushed down.
1:28 1:48 "we are Singaporeans, you are not Singaporean, this is what we do to non Singaporeans"
They are not even Singaporean in the end. Just across the bridge.
@@panda63725 even then, how could we allow shit like this to happen. disappointed.
So sorry you had to go through such a bad funeral and cremation processes for your wife in Singapore. However I'm happy that you and your family are happy living in Singapore now. All the best!
Hey it was a culture shock only. We'd only been here a matter of months for the saddest thing that could ever happen to a family. 16 years later, let's just say we're much more at home (this is home) and embedded!!!
What a nice chap Brian is.
Brian is so genuine, yeh, he will do well introducing Singapore to the world as an expatriate.
It’s my home and I love it here - but I am honest too haha. Thx for the comment.
@@BrianKennettlets vote Brian for President ❤❤
Crikey - thanks so much - boy did that make my day haha@@user-dg7gs4hv6v
Im sorry to hear that...thank u for sharing. Hope u have a better life.
Bless you! Thank you!
Keep doing these Max and Brian. Loving it! I lived in Siglap and Katong back in 1996!! Back in Western Australia now. Getting inspiration again to move to Singapore though
@max we need to do more haha...
Loving the channel Max! Will meet up when I’m in SG again!
I'm going on a food tour in Joo Chiat after watching this episode.
Great interview Max.❤
Hi Brian -- love your positive outlook in life despite of some tough and difficult times. We each have our own life experiences to bear and learn from, I guess. Totally love seeing you drag Max all over Joo Chiat/ Katong's shops and eating spots. I've lived in the East side of the island all my life, and I'm just 5-10 min away from where you all were in this video. I pass by Joo Chiat every day when I head to work too. Maybe we'll bump into each other one day! hahaha I have worked with many "ang moh" foreigners before in past two jobs. I just wish most of them were like you, who is willing to "get out of the malls", "eat at the hawker centres and local food", and meet us locals at our level in terms of connection and communication.
Shucks thanks so so much. Yes, I love Katong soooo much, great mates and food all up and down there. I am a Siglap guy, if you see the 1st one I did with Max we did that from my second home hawker in Siglap. Maybe I'll drag Max somewhere else next time haha...
@@BrianKennett yes , I did watch the video. I am very familiar with the Siglap too! Happy Dragon Year to you and everyone reading this, btw.
This is your best video!! I love it.
Absolutely awesome video - entertaining, moving, inspiring, and jovial - thanks to the wonderful guests, their spirit and contributions.
Wow that made my day: thank you so much!
Sorry to hear about Brian’s experience with the funeral service providers. Most of these companies do not have the experience and skills to deal with foreigner customers especially on the emotional aspects. In such a scenario I would suggest asking a friend who lives here, who had been through the process, for advice.
Major lessons learnt - that’s part of the reason for sharing. Just ask. We were so ‘new’ here. It was tough. Thanks for your comments.
@@BrianKennett Hey Brian, married to a Japanese lady myself. Wasn't the Japanese embassy able to provide advice/help?
One thing about the Japanese embassy is you have to speak Japanese, every time my kids need new passports I have to get my mother-in-law to fill the forms out and post them and tell me with post it notes where I need to sign and what to do haha... But no not much help from any Embassy to be honest. @@jsurfin1
It’s unfortunate that Brian got a bad experience with his wife’s funeral but that’s not the usual case in Singapore. Funerals here can be an elaborate affair and most of the funeral parlours here especially the bigger and more reputable ones do handle the funerals properly and with respect. They would also assign someone to collect the ashes with you and transfer the ashes to the urn properly. Of course they will have different packages with different prices and services.
I must have chosen badly. It really was such a sad and upsetting affair. Bless you for your comments!
The "little red dot" was a name given to us (SG) by an Indonesian minister years back (in a not so nice way). @max chernox.
yes it was done to insult singapore's small size
Yeah and a certain Taiwanese politician called us a little booger - but it didn't stick (pun intended)! lol
i really like this format of a walking interview! keep going!
Stayed at The Modules along Joo Chiat Rd. Everything in this vid is so familiar. Used to pass by Mutt daily and it nvr fails to grab my attention. It expanded from a smaller lot next to current one.
Did u know that the Starbucks next to I12 was a police HQ? And grand old dame Katong Shopping Ctr was the goto before Parkway Parade was built in 82. Also used to hv a Roxy cinema, which is replaced with a mall (think the obe with NTUC). And then in plaxe of Seaview condo, there was Seaview Hotel, a big Cold Storage later replaced by IKEA. Memories😊
thanks for the great video - love hearing from brian again - such an engaging person! thank you for sharing with us your stories… so sorry to hear about your wife😢
Seriously bless you / thank you
Hi Max nice video here. Singaporean here. I used to live near Joo Chiat and it is really an awesome place. There used to be a supermarket called Tay Buan Guan (where ham was something very new to me in 1960s), the Red House (where eating a scoop of ice cream in the 1970s was a luxury), Fitzpatricks (where we get mini hot dogs and canned pineapple for our school events). And there was the prawn noodle at the basement of Dunman Hawker Centre whom i know personally and i think his prawn noodles were the best (he has retired and no longer selling prawn noodles).
Also, there is a gentleman selling Zi Char at Lorong 106 (or nearby) who served the best hor fun and that noodle was put in a opeh leaves to keep the food warm - not those nasty plastic containers that we use today. There was People's Emporium at the present day Kinex Building which was not airconditioned during those days. And last but not least, there was Lily Cinema (open air cinema) where you pay 50 cents for entrance fee - and if it rained, you needed to whip out your brollies. Those were the best days. And I miss it.
Love this history. Awesome thank you!!!
Thanks for this trip down memory lane . I was born in the 1960’s and my childhood home was in Joo Chiat Place . After 24 years , I got married and moved to a walk up apartment in Joo Chiat Road . After 22 years , I downgraded to a Hougang hdb as my retirement home . I really missed Joo Chiat /Katong .
It's quite happening in those 2 area this day now
More than welcome - a lot has changed and keeps changing, why I love it so living the East Coast. Beach nearby, amazing hawkers, bars and restos. No better place haha... EastSiders Hoop WHoop!!!@@bakkwa8705
Yes! E old days were e best! My family also lived there behind TBG at Onan Road in a tiny house. I used to enjoy riding e Trishaw with my late Mum. She always brought us to eat e stuffed tau kwa that was located at a corner coffee shop nearby. Red House was iconic! Wonderful memories of Katong n Joo Chiat!
So sorry about your bad experience. Glad you didn't give up to live here. No matter how safe Singapore really is , it is still wise to be caution. Now I feel worried for my daughter who usually return home very late.
I have the same now with my daughter. I will give Sollace though that that was the one and only time in 16 years I have witnessed such myself. If I was in UK, it would nearly be every weekend. Singapore is SAFE believe me!!!
Wonderful and cheerful - I am moving from London to Marine Drive Mumbai soon! 👌👍💐
The Joo Chiat residents there are actually not happy with the KTVs being there because it brings chaos and noises and people of dubious character. Also quite a number of these girls are not even locals, possibly from SE Asian 3rd world countries or even from China.
Am so sorry for the experience of hving to go thru death in a new country and how insensitive ppl were 😢. Sometimes the cheeriest ppl is the one who have been thru the worst. I love sing food scene but cnt stand the heat o mostly going in and out the mall and this hve been very informative abt things outside the malls.. Love the video thnks
Bless you! Yeah get out of those malls haha - I get the free aircon - but those are chains - the best is in the hawker!!! Have fun!!!
This guy is awesome
Blew you / thank you sincerely
Great interview (again) really feel for Brian and wish him every success for his future

He kinda reminds me of Robbie Coltrane aka Hagrid.
Losing a partner is devastating. Glad to see Brian made it through.
Bless you - thank you!!!
The way he talk n drink I not too surprised
Wow - tad harsh!
Such "KTV" are also known as Nightclubs, there are decent KTV that are really meant for real singing 😄. Brian is more local than the locals haha
I know massively over-egged - hey it’s content for TH-cam and don’t forget skillfully edited by our Max haha
This is by far the best video on the channel
Wow! I am blown away!
The thing about funerals in Singapore is that its geared towards the legacy of how Chinese funerals were traditionally done; like open casket [your choice but its to just show how well your Loved one looks before the final send off], seeing the coffin actually being burned [in the past cremation was done in the open for all to see so perhaps this practice was a continuation of that, which thank goodness they don't show anymore at the crematorium] n the unceremoniously transferring of the remains, ashes n bones, into the urn Right in front of you, a very nonchalant experience [perhaps to prove the ashes were really placed into the urn, n not sand. 😅
Just my thoughts.
Purely a culture shock - I get that. Totally. Hence talking about it to hopefully ‘share’ and teach. It was a tough one. Thanks for your comment!!!
Hi Brian, my condolences. What is simply unforgivable is, The Straits Times charges more for Obituaries in column-inches then they charge their advertising clients. Simply heartless.
@@nopenonein how did u find out about the different charges?
@@eseetoh I asked them after being charged ridiculous amounts and basically being held hostage. This was before social media and alternative avenues for posting your news to friends and family or business acquaintances.
Fantastic video
Wow thank you!
I've seen at least 2-3 big gang fights in Singapore Food courts, late at night, over the past 20 years. Plastic chairs and food flying around, knifes used and some blood around the targeted person and attackers. Police are quick to arrive & break it up. So these does happen, albeit quite rare & unexpected. 😊😊
I know - as I said though it’s super safe here and fights are so infrequent in comparison to other countries and cities. I’d rather my kids were here than any other place in the planet!!!
wow! i like this one and ofcourse your guess. Unfortunate of Brian loosing the wife here. But, Brian is in good spirit and i love how's hes moved on with life.
Bless you!!! Humbling, truly!!!
A misconception of these shop houses that are taller is richer. In the past, many of these shop houses changed hands and new owners were allowed to tear down the existing and rebuilt a one floor higher but in exchange, the front portion of the land has to be moved in 10 meters inward for future road expansion. However, the building conversation act kicks in 1989 to preserve all these shophouses so as to prevent modifications on the original building architecture.
Super interesting! Thx for that, truly!
the shawarma at joo chiat! been eating there when i was working in the area. still one of my favourite!
Kindred foodie on that one haha
I guess that it's true for foreigners that it's easy to start businesses in Singapore compared to other countries but it's also very easy for businesses to become non-sustainable here.
Sorry to hear about Brian's upsetting experience with the funeral service. It was already tough for him to go through the death of a love one. It was the funeral culture here that he wasn't used to.
Exactly - I was so so new here and it was such a culture shock on top of the actual death itself. Truly thank you for the comments.
@@BrianKennett Despite that bad experience, you still love staying here. For that, I thank you. ☺️
Here is my home. My family have grown and been born here.
It was the same trauma and disturbing for my European colleague when her husband passed away suddenly in Singapore. They could not understand why the funeral parlour kept asking if they wanted the buffet service and that I t was actually more weird/disturbing for locals to see a loved one to be left alone at parlour vs bringing them home to have the service at home. The bad funeral services experienced are generally due different expectations caused by cultural differences and religion practices.
In western countries the body is placed in an open coffin at the funeral home and people visit when they want to say their goodbyes else mainly visit only on actual burial day. In Singapore the dead return home, duration of service rites depend on religion like for Taoist and Buddhism now much shorter at 3 days (in the past up to 7 days). Service rites would take place for all days, friends and family come to say their good byes and are also served some food at the same time (hence the buffet service). On the last day, the coffin leaves in a floral hearse with a “party” playing the last song/prayer for the last march to the incinerator. When you get there, they have a special viewing room to send off their loved one watching the coffin getting pushed into the incinerator. Wait for few hours or maybe some days later to come back and collect ashes and lay to rest at their new “condo” that is a columbarium at a cemetery/temple/church etc.
It's purely a culture thing and I was so 'young' to Singapore I had no idea. 16 years in now and I get it totally, but at 6 months only it was a shocker. If ANYONE wants to talk about this, hopefully no one ever does need to, I am totally at beckon call
I see you watch zermatt neo as well!! Wowwww. Hehe.
this episode is so interesting.
Thank you so very much!!!
Ha har , this dude his really street smart, including ktv girls using other things for microphone
Sorry that was well cheeky - whoops haha
What a beautiful video, really opened my eyes about travelling to Singapore and about how is it there, Brain was also such a charming I really felt bad and sorry for him when I heard about his old wife's death story and I'm glad and happy he's doing all fine and great now.
Thanks to Max and Brian for this video!
And thank you for your lovely comment. Please come to singapore - you’ll love it!!! Amazing country!!!
I'm sorry for your loss and the terrible experience.
Bless you!
I used to work for a Muslim funeral company, and sometimes I wonder how is it like for ang mo if there is any death. I've always thought that a funeral company would coordinate and prepare everything.
Sadly not. It was pretty awful on top of the actual happening itself: major lessons learnt that need to be shared. Thank you!!!
fan of your channel! i stay on joo chiat rd and if you ever wanna get some food around here let's do it 👍👍
Sounds good!
Be nice in Singapore will do.
This guy knows his joo chiat well ! For him to know little Vietnam, this guy 😂
I live Siglap - but LOVE Singapore food - read our blog!!!
Funerals in SG gotten better at least. But is still very chop chop though.
My grandma passed during the CNY period many years back and one of the undertaker chaps prepping the funeral were singing a happy CNY tune of “幸福来” ( Xing fu Lai - fortune be here), whilst at the same time it sounds very much “醒不来” (Xing bu Lai - can’t wake up). Can’t help feeling that he was being a dick about it, having to work over the holidays.
That is sad to hear! @@Bullitc
So true! It was 16 years ago but I remember it like yesterday!

So sorry and ashamed to hear about the CHIJMES incident, didn't even realise this sort of disreputable behaviour would ever happen there. I was under the impression brawls would happen only in the real hard-drinking places like Clarke or Robertson Quay where sailors on shore leave drink too much and get into fights.
I know right - you saw the surprise from Max when I said it. I never went back to Chijmes for many years, MANY. But hey, it was a one-off, and nearly forgotten.
Why it's so difficult to be a foreigner in Myanmar
Most expats interviewed have the CBD view of Singapore seldom heard about Jurong, tampines or Ang Mo Kio, not so down to earth
Let’s have me and Max do those suburbs one day!!!
did he say Singapore has 20 islands? He's been here for awhile and didn't know we have over 60 islands?
Such a terrible inaccuracy!
I think I said over 20
Singapore police are not efficient with enforcement actions against people who cause physical violence. Have heard of similar incidences by other travellers.

He never experience more horrific than I. Lucky not to
get my head chopped off. That was during the Chinese
Malay riot in the sixties when I was in Primary Four in
Jervious Primary School one afternoon. I was walking
home from school in my yellow shirt and blue short
carrying my suitcase school bag when I stopped at a sarabat stall at a traffic junction near Tai Hong Biscuit Factory. Was standing there when I heard of Don't Run
and so on. Turning my head to the left I saw a group of
twenty carrying parangs and long wooden poles chasing
a similar group without weapons and they stopped in
front of me where I standing. The group without weapons
started grabbing the empty beer bottles on the tables and
chairs and started fighting and screaming. I see the
parangs, wooden poles started flying and the group using
the beer bottles and chairs in retailation.Bloods was flying
everywhere. If I stretched my hands I would touch them.
The group give up and ran away with the group chasing
them yelling don't run until they disappeared.
Wowser! So sad to hear that - goodness me
on funeral part of Brian's wife, most likely due to family members are flying in from overseas, and also possible due to differences in cultures, practices, and religion. actually, a lot of communications had already been done between the family members and the funeral director/coordinator, way way ahead, even before the body was collected from Blk 9. from the interview in video, at that time, Brian is dis-oriented, resulting in lack of information to be pass on between the family member/funeral directors, which leads to the awful experience. Perhaps Max can interview some funeral directors, and pass on good information to expats/foreigns on what to do in such unexpected events.
Hey look it was a long time ago and to state again it was awful experience of losing someone so close and not knowing the process: that’s what needed improving, the sharing. But it was also major culture shock of what have been used to back home. No blame here - it was just an observation.

Brian is very human and relatable and I empathize with him and what he's gone through in life. But, no, hope this channel isn't going to draw in more angmoh crowds here and have Singapore eventually teeming with western espionage jerks! Remember, the US allocates billions to drum up anti-China propaganda around the world. Just because Brian is likeable and isn't one of them doesn't mean everyone else of them isn't or isn't going to be.
Love that comment. I truly hope so too!!! With you 1000% on that.

Ouch! Haha!
I did 3 weeks in singapore and hated it. Too sterile, boring, expensive and inhumane. Brian sounds like a woke lefty so I wouldn't pay much heed to what he says. Most of those types are idiots
Wouldn't it be nice Brian Ken co-acting with Gary Oldman in Slow Horses Season 4. 🤭
