    5:17 Singapore is not funded by the US. Singapore buys equipment based on pragmatism (with her own money too) and there are numerous reasons why singapore chooses US/European equipment. If Russian/Chinese equipment are better in every aspect, Singapore would most definitely consider getting them.
    You are not really wrong that Singapore is in the US camp, considering that Singapore agrees to having a US presence in South-East Asia for stability.
    On top of that, as a result of letting the US dock at Singapore's port and close relationship, The Department of Defense has entered into a bilateral, non-binding Security of Supply Arrangement (SOSA) with the Republic of Singapore. The arrangement will enable both the U.S. and Singapore to acquire industrial resources they need to quickly meet defense requirements, resolve unanticipated disruptions that challenge defense capacities, and promote supply chain resiliency.
    This is just one of many reasons why Singapore ultimately chose Western equipment than their counterparts. You can google for many other reasons as to why.

    Singapore has no strategic value to anyone. That is our first line of defence. Even if Singapore is invaded and conquered, we have no oil, no gold, no diamonds, no rare earth or other mineral or natural resources for our conqueror to exploit. Second, Singapore is friend to everyone. We trade with China and we trade with US, and we are friendly to both, and take no sides. We even train our military in Taiwan, and China turns a blind eye to that. (For the most part. There was the Terrex incident in 2016.) So we have no value for would be invaders, and we try not to make enemies, but war is never rational, so in spite of it all, we intend to be able to defend ourselves. When our neighbours were less than friendly, they have commented that Singapore is "a little red dot" (on the map) in a sea of green - Malaysia and Indonesia is pre-dominantly Muslim (green). When Singapore joined the Federation of Malaysia in 1963, Indonesia's then-President had objections and an undeclared war (konfrontasi) was waged against Singapore/Malaysia.
    Then Malaysia ejected Singapore from the Federation in 1965.
    In those early years there was concerned that Malaysia may attempt to "re-integrate" Singapore (like China wants to reunite Taiwan). So in 1969, Singapore got our first tanks. And that put paid to the idea of reuniting Singapore with Malaysia.
    sghistoryunauthorised.blogspot.com/2023/10/singapores-first-tanks-and-story-behind.html
    Still Malaysia was not above pranking Singapore. Like in 1991 in their wargames, codenamed "Operasi Pukul Habis". sghistoryunauthorised.blogspot.com/2023/11/operasi-pukul-habis-national-day-1991.html
    And no, Singapore is not funded by the US. The impression that the US goes around paying for the influence is wrong. The US builds up their alliances around the world based on mutual respect and common interests. Thus the US is allied with the Philippines in part because of the belligerence of China in the South China Sea, and their unjustified claims. The US is able to draw in Japan because they have common security concerns. The US enlisted Australia and the UK to form AUKUS because of shared concerns. The QUAD is similarly formed - from mutual, shared concerns. So no, Singapore is friendly with the US, and with China, and we hope that war never breaks out between China and the US (or their proxies), because that is best for the world, and what is best for the world, is best for Singapore.
    The last time Singapore almost got some money from the US, specifically the CIA, was in the 1960s: th-cam.com/video/jmn7jn4CRSM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=wBSLFBiC-2LFoxLy
    Singapore's small size means we need to go elsewhere to train - Taiwan, Australia, France, the US - we have training bases in all these areas. Which also means we need to have good relations with all these countries. There are analyst who hear the drums of war beating and believe that it is imminent, and maybe even inevitable.
    Singapore hopes not. But hope is not a strategy. And while we always Hope for the best, we also need to plan for the worst.

    • @aero.l
      @aero.l หลายเดือนก่อน

      Will Singapore take sides if a war between the US and China breaks out? I feel that when push comes to shove, we may side with the US due to the fact we need their continued dominance for the security and weaponry that guarantees our sovereignty. Personally though, I think our relations with our 2 closest neighbours will improve further if all refrain from taking sides. But you never know.

    • @angeluscorpius
      @angeluscorpius หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@aero.l Singapore's eternal interest is to take "Singapore's side". So whose side we join will be the side the best represents Singapore's best interest. And War is NOT in Singapore's interest. But also NOT in Singapore's control. China, before Xi Jinping took over was inclined towards Deng's advice, which was to "hide your capabilities, and bide your time". Xi believes that China's Time is now and is not inclined to hide anything. The one person who might have persuaded him otherwise, passed away in 2015. But I believe that Xi would not have listened to LKY anyway.
      Singapore's "Strategy" for now is to try to assuage China, and assure China that they do not need to go to war. While at the same time trying to advise Taiwan not to provoke China. And the most egregious provocation would be a declaration of Independence. When then-President Tsai was asked if Taiwan would or should declare Independence, she deftly side-stepped the question and said that Taiwan was already de facto independent. There is no need for a Declaration. In this she was probably following the US advice too. The (cooler heads in the) US understands that it is not about who will prevail in the war, but that the simple act of war will sabotage the world trade, and global prosperity. The Russo-Ukraine war while contained within Europe has had the effects ripple throughout the world. A China-Taiwan war will inevitably involved US, and likely Japan, and probably the Philippines. And possibly S. Korea, and maybe even some NATO countries, and India. So basically, it might well become World War III. Or China vs the World. There is a reason for all these countries "ganging up" on China. The message to China is, "don't try anything. It won't be good for you."
      But Xi (like Putin), may believe that China will prevail despite the opposition arrayed before China. 'Cos Authoritarian (like Putin).
      So whose side would Singapore take in such a war?
      Our calculus will be, who's cause is better for Singapore? Whose dominance will be better for Singapore.
      The US's values and principles and ideology, leads them to treat other nations as potential partners and (almost) as equals.
      Singapore has experienced China's "diplomacy". China's approach and principle is that of the "Middle" or "Central" Kingdom. As the larger state, they expect smaller states to know their place.
      War does not serve Singapore's best interest. Prosperity through peace. Singapore wants to continue to prosper.

    WW2 was a rude awakening when we realised our former colonial masters were not invincible n that we should take personal responsibility to ensure the occupation of Singapore will never happen again. On top of that, the 60s were a volatile period of military unrest from the communists insurgency in Malaysia n the threats from the Indonesian military dictatorship as well... especially when Singapore become independent.
    Therefore the need to build a strong military as a deterrence against any future threats.
    Better safe than sorry.

    Singapore Govt doesn’t wait for something to happen. Socially, economically and militarily. Even if there is a tiny possibility it is still a possibility. It’s either a 0 or 1 there is no in between.

  • @CaptainNoch
    @CaptainNoch 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Hello! If you want a black and white summary on why Singapore built itself a strong military, the reasons are actually historical and at the same time, a social tool.
    Historical in the sense that the whole drive for self-defense was a by-product of the British surrender to Japanese forces in WWII and since Singapore was already a majority-Chinese state then, it faced a brutal occupation from the Japanese who rounded up Chinese men and children and killed them. When reading a Singapore history textbook, there is many glorification of local war heroes that continued to resist the Japanese during the occupation. The failure of the British to defend Singapore eroded the perception of "white supremacy" and when the British returned, Singaporeans pretty much saw the British as little compared to pre-war.
    Of course, they still relied on the British for defense and the threat of being left defenseless went up prior to 1970 when the British decided to retreat everything East of the Suez. Hence, conscription was introduced in 1967 to quickly train new soldiers that will replace the departing British forces, and this was supported by the narrative of "You have to defend your own land" that was born out of the WWII experience.
    And yes, Singapore relies on international trade for its survival, and that is why Singapore constantly plays a balancing act and strives to be neutral as much as possible; although it is obvious Singapore leans more to the West.
    And on conscription, while it is unpopular especially among pre-enlistees, it has become a sort of cultural rite of passage for Singaporean men. It is envisaged as a social tool which forces men to mingle with others and build meaningful relationships that should help to build a cohesive society, given that Singapore is highly multiracial; Singapore has had its fair share of race riots in the 60s and there is heavy emphasis on preventing them from happening again.
    So, since 1968, National Service has become a keystone of the Singapore state which not only ensures its own defense, but also a social tool that supports the nation-building efforts. Singapore probably overspends on its military, but it is the reason why it has a strong economy and a very positive image on the world stage as a reliable financial hub. Even in light of the South China Sea dispute, Singapore continues to play the mediator in ASEAN and interestingly, companies are choosing to move their Asia-HQs from Hong Kong to Singapore.

    In light of recent geopolitics turbulence where the bigger fish can eat the smaller fish (Ukraine-Russia war), it is not far-fetched that Singapore with such a small land mass can easily be taken over by a bigger country. While there is a general consensus that Singapore would probably lose in a major war, at the very least, it will be much more painful and costly to invade Singapore.
    Therefore, there's the need to continue building a strong military for deterrence.

    Singapore need no funding from the United States as its economical sound and filthy rich. Singapore’s defense budget rose to 22.4 billion for 2024 and will continue to increase in next 5 years .
    Fun fact :
    Despite it declared politically and militarily nonalignment in 1967 , Singapore stand firmed with the united states against the USSR and more anti communism then any countries in the world , which Singapore have little tolerance towards any communist members if found .
    Singapore was the biggest military supply and replenished base during Vietnam war than any other nation especially the standard nato 5.56mm , 12.7mm machine gun rounds to 155mm artillery shells etc .
    Despite not once but many times Singapore have publicly declared its neutrality and will not take either side , still it spend USD 17 billion reclaimed land , upgrade the infrastructure and intensify the port which is known as Changi Naval base , it could dock 2 large vessels with each up to 100k tons each at the same time , the size of Singapore navy does not have this massive capacity of ships , the larges it have at the moment are 4 landing supply ships each weighing 8500 tons and decommissioning soon , our MRCV Still yet to announce its launch still it’s expected tons is going to be less than 20k tons . Numerous times or time to time you could see the massive US aircraft carrier docked at the harbor. The moral of the story, if the conflicts escalate in South China Sea, Taiwan invasion , North Korea and Korea may be unrest and I believe Japan will be attacked & Senkaku and pinnacle islands will be the hottest spot & the main attraction. Till then no one could stay out of being unharmed and no one will be safe despite you chooses to stay neutral, you have to take side .
