For those of you who can't go into reverse. Try adding 15 additional degrees of advance. Then try again. A good rule of thumb is to add as many degrees of advance as you can before it starts to turn the engine in reverse while going forward. If you manage to tune it like that. Reversing will be as easy as pressing the accelerator before starting the engine.

Alstrak you know you don’t need to disconnect from gas engine so you can just leave it not unlike electric engine have able to stay in place but the gas engine it not able to do that so it able to move not likely to electric engine?..

I had some trouble building the engine. I posted here. Within a few minutes Alstrak was kind enough to respond. Then, he came to my scrap mechanic world and spent 2-1/2 hours helping me to fix and complete the perfect piston car. What a wonderful fellow he is. Thank you, Alstrak.❤❤❤
I've build the 4 piston version and this is the smoothest fast running piston engine I've driven yet, great step by set build tutorial as well nice and clear instructions so you hardly can make any mistake. I do recommend as well as what you have said to someone else for the reverse problem, add another 15 degrees going to 75 from 60 to make reverse more reliable.
Just so i can know, how is the torque on it? I was thinking of making a big heavy rv with this but im worried the engine wont have enough torque

I made a piston driven tractor with an open differential that can mechanically lock if extra traction is needed.
I made it in creative using gear mods, but I think it could be modified to use vanilla parts for survival.

You could hook up the piston engine to a cogwheel system using wedges, then attach saws or drills to it, then you could power multiple at once
You can but it gets complicated real quick. :)

thank you for the design i will now go make an extremely complicated driveshaft because i like overcomplicating everything
if you hook this engine up to a rear axle and a differential(which is surprising easy) you can easily fix the bad steering issue

I feel like the video was a bit long though. You could definitely cut out all the pauses between you talking except where there's important construction happening. There's already enough video of you driving that those pauses in voice while you drive are unnecessary.
Also, a written parts list would be nice for those of us who want to screenshot or throw it up on a 2nd monitor while we farm the materials needed.
If you add a second set of rear tires that come down with the gas engine powering them you can simply switch it to gas mode by lifting the rear to the new wheels
Definitely isn't the best piston engine like the title suggests but it's extremely cheap and still works so that's a thumbs up!
is there any change u would do a video on ball joint steering attached to this piston engine ?
nice design, everyone make sure if you make this in creative mode you set your sensors to one really screwed me up at first
I've done the 4 piston engine, and it keeps on catching, making it so that I can't get much momentum, how do I fix this? Also, I'm building it in creative first to test it, could this be the problem? is the problem just gone in survival? Any help would be appreciated :) .

It should be but you will have to add an extra bearing, controller and a switch
thats the cheapest parts on the list.
for my heavy hauler i just put a springglitch on each wheel,set to 26 and then connected controller to seat. downside is no brakes tho.

I just connect the controller straight to the bearings put it on a 360 loop and done. Simple.
using 4 pistons for me makes the wheels bounce up and down for some reason :/ but the duel piston version works perfectly :) thanks
Awesome video! May I ask why that L-piece on the left needs to be free like that? Cant you just make it a supporting part of the chassi? THanks =)
That is the timing wheel. The sensors react to that and it's free(attached to a controller) so it can be advanced or retarded.
i cant seem to get this one to work.. i added a total of (5) small pipes on both side to extend the axle...not sure if this is the cause of the problem....still have the two set at 90 / -15 / -60 ..so not sure what im doing wrong.

5:43 does both bearings connect to the wood blocks when you click and drag like that? I thought you had to place the two blocks individually on the bearings?
The devs made that possible at some point. If you attach anything close to either a bearing or a piston it will automatically attach to them instead. Even if you are pointing to another block.
I don't know why, but the reverse doesn't function with me. I just can't find any reason why it doesn't work... Other then that, this is a great video and piston engine! 😁👍
I loved your tutorial, but I have made an error somewhere that I can not find. (I am a 71 yr old woman so not too mechanical, LOL). The piston closest to the flywheel goes around ok logic gate flashing on and off but the other piston puffs steam and logic gates lights up steady and doesn't rotate. I made sure all is welded, checked the controller and piston settings but I can't get it to work. Any suggestions?

Alright I tried out this build in creative mode and some reason 1 my bearings connected to the controller showed the connections upright instead of down like in the video. im not sure how to change this or if its the issue. second if I try to make a 4 piston engine it seems to not work at all even if I mess around with the 2nd connection a lot. im not sure what im doing wrong here or how to fix it if I have these issues. the 2 piston engine seems to work for the most part though.
oddly I decided to make it in survival mode and it worked perfectly fine. Have not gotten to 4 pistons yet but loving it so much!
I made this and I have run into a problem the First switch does activate it and it is fast as Kans one but the second one doesn't help, It makes the vehicle jitter back and forth slightly, can anyone help?

when i press the button to go forward, the left piston goes forward and that's it. nothing else happens.
wen i run out of fuel wen am far i just leave the vehicle loot some boxes from towers cause those bots are easy kill melee the grab the gasoline and go back :) discoverd the city out of fuel had to do this or run for 20 minutes back cause the ride was about 9 minutes.
newbie here, what did i do wrong ? I cant get it to go in reverse, and its faster with the second switch in the off position ?

I use gas engine at the same time with the piston and it has too much torque to steer

"Weld them to the support" That is the piece of wood that holds the wheels on either side.

After 2 hours spent farming oil, I’m sold on this design type.
Hopefully they give you the ability to put pumps on oil nodes. It's a pain.
I'm really curious whether a vaccum pump would work. Or if it would just suck water. It would probably just suck up water.
@@apexalaska I believe I read that the developer confirmed there is currently no way to automate oil. However, it does look like there is a strong possibility they will add it later. They added the ability to pump chemicals the first few days, and the vacuum pump can plant seeds and harvest crops, so the ability is there.
With the oil ponds update you can suck oil with a vacuum pump

If anything, this shows that oil is too hard to come by and at least needs a way to be auto farmed, and/or gas consumption in vehicles are waaaaay too high.
Also, nobody is going to use electric engines until you can recharge batteries.

They could have make it so that you can get bio-diesel from one of the crops you farmed.
reasons most of us have edited oil in the configs somehow - or added "biodiesel" as a crafting recipe
this is why I was telling a friend of mine while we play that there's needs to be an oil pump that you can place near or on the oil vent to pump out oil. ^_^

Yknow how bearings, suspentions and pistons disapear when you remove the block they attached to. Remove those 3 first then all blocks

The accelerator for me is backwards oddly, off means more speed, on means less. Granted this is still nice to have, and it's more compact than the one i built before by kAN Gaming.
and the 4 piston version will help alot with a mobile base or harvest machines. Can the Piston Engine be used for drills too or just wheels?

Have the kan engine for my miner that's going to look like a Prius this will probably be a looter or explorer build use for me but I like how simple this flat / boxer engine is

I found I had a hard time getting the same level of speed as you seem to have in the video. Turning the angle of the timing wheel to positive 15 degrees seemed to result in the fastest forward speed, but it also made it so that the direction it went from a stop was somewhat of a crapshoot.
Still, neat engine. Going to play with it a bit and see what I can do to get as much speed and power as possible.

Great tutorial, one issue I had was getting into reverse. After mounting the vehicle on a stand and adjusting the timing wheel. I had to remove one of the blocks in the bottom left to get it to function in both forward and reverse. So my timing wheel formed a T (3 and 1) instead of being a 3 and 2.
If you couldn't get into reverse then you could add 15 more degrees of advancing. This should fix the issue and you might be able to go even faster. :)
I can’t seem to go into reverse and my car will drive forward when only the button on the logic gates are on. Can anyone help?
Edit: Nvm turns out I forgot to turn the timing bearing connected to the controller XD classic me.

I dont know what i am doing wrong i have 4 pistons maxed out and this thing will not move forward for me. I put this thing together several times exactly like the video. This pistons start moving then they stop. It moves more when accelorator switch is off.

How you make that welding? I tried everything, but it doesn't work than way. It always weld a whole vehicle to some piece, not a small parts with each other. Oh I get it. It should be on lift. Never guessed.

technically an electric engine is an engine because it is fueled exclusively by batteries which is a chemical fuel source.
I used Gas engines for planes in Survival, Ohhh I can smell the Kerosine from here
If you put timing in between the wheels (timing part is 2 blocks wide, and there is enough space) you can make the
design very small!!
The timing is on the outside for a reason. If you put it between the wheels you won't be able to get the efficiency aspect of it because you can't adjust the timing wheel that way.
If I put the accelerator past 15 degrees the engine goes in reverse and it will occasionally reverse temporary how could I fix this?
Give the dafault position negative 30-45 degrees and add 15-30 to the accelerator position.

i messed around with the main idea of this engine and i made one that only uses 1 piston
That is weird, when I try to go backward, the piston move back a full rotation, then they make me go foward :(
(I have rotated the bearing connected to the controleur once)

Edit : I have found my problem, I do not know why, but with the piston at a speed of "3", it caused my problem.
When I move them at a speed of "5" and more, it start moving backward!
Try rotating the bearing
Or rebuild the engine

we used thrusters that pushed against a rod and performed the role of a piston. :)

We have a lake nearby which is full of oil. But its takes me 1 horrible hour+ to farm enough oil to not care about it for the next hours... Time to switch! I don't want to waste more time on oil.
I built it and it works just fine, but what ever I do, the turning radius SUCKS anyone got any suggestions?
I suggest you to widen gap between the front wheels and also add soft suspension to them. That will make it steer better.
@@Alstrak I widened my front wheels and I added soft suspension, but it isn't helping, so I guess I will just deal with it, thanks for helping tho.

Yes, just make sure you don't over accelerate or your engine will start going backwards
honestly looking at the intro i dont lose fuel as much anymore and i usually build piston vehicles unless someone has a bad pc (i usually do multiplayer)

The reverse didn't really work for me (even with adding more degrees), so here's what I did instead:
1: Insert another bearing between the big wheel and the sensors, making sure both the sensors and the blocks attached are now attached to the bearing
2: Put down another controller, connect it to the bearing, and set it to -90 degrees (not the start position, the one after that)
3: Add a third button and connect it to the controller and seat
That seems to work just fine. It takes a while to move, but so does the original design so I don't think it's that bad, and it works much better.
Edit: Actually it's working now so I don't think you have to do this
So I tired making this in creative mode and I can't get it to go in reverse no matter what timing I set it to. It either goes forward or nothing.

@@Alstrak I did that. Didn't work. I keep adding advance and it never goes into reverse, it just stops working.
To be fair though, I did modify your design a little. I put the distributor on the inside of the tire instead of the outside. But it is still exactly as you built it.
Is there a way to have a better steering piston powered vehicle for big items because the one I have has horsepower to spare but turning is the issue?
I suggest you make the front wheel gap bigger and also add springs on the wheels. :)

Hi Alstrak, than you for this video. I tried to build this, but failed. I think the issue was in your step 3 from 4:28 to 4:38 you just breezed through. I was lost there. Can you or anyone please go slowly step by step what happened there. Alstrak, I understand you're good at this, but when making a tutorial, could you please slow down so that the rest of us noobs can actually understand what exactly is happening there. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for doing this. Love.
Can you take the 4 piston set-up but remove the center of the rear axle? Just extend the subframe through the center, make the single axle a dual axle, and the 4 piston motor becomes two 2 piston motors? It wouldn't quite be a differential but might allow different speeds at the different wheels? I haven't played this game. If it worked, though, you could repeat for the front and make it all wheel drive... When looking at a hybrid setup, can you just add an extra set of wheels that aren't connected to the axle that just roll when not powered? Guess I could just play the game and find out
it's a chemical reaction going on inside the battery which is powering the motor/engine. So it is an electric engine?
This is an incredible build. It's very effective. I couldn't get it's upgrade to work. It just complicated the system and left me fighting against the machine too often. I'm sure there's a fix for it but adjusting the controller didn't seem to work. Might have been because of the different weight or something, not sure. But I love it.

We’re pistons even out 4 years ago? You said you were making piston engines 4 years ago but I started playing a little more than 4 years ago and pistons weren’t released till a lot after that.
