    the electric engine may seem more fuel efficient at first glance
    but remember that in scrap mechanic, gas is more renewable than electricity for some reason
    there's no solar panels or wind turbines, but there's literally entire ponds full of oil if you know where to look for them

    I also used to do some Experiments for building Flyers. Some of the most interesting Results I got that you could maybe verify are:
    -Actual block weight doesn’t scale linearly with the weight description. The relation is:
    1 - 1; 2 - 2; 3 - 3; 4 - 4; 5 - 6; 6 - 8; 7 - 10; 8 - 14; 9 - 18
    Notable exceptions are Small Pipes each weighing 1.5 per Block as well as bearings, pistons and springs which have no weight.
    -Thruster Force is proportional with Thruster fuel consumption for a give Level. Force increases exponentially for each setting with a base of 1.5
    -Thruster Force varies slightly over time, in magnitude and direction. The Game files also hint at this.
    -Free bearings don’t have friction.
    -Air resistance is proportional to mass and velocity, rather than real air resistance which is proportional to the drag coefficient and velocity squared in most common cases.
    -Bearing are much weaker in survival than in creative mode. When met with a linear force they move or stretch a lot.

    Somebody looked at the game code and came to the following conclusions:
    1. Efficiency scales exactly as I assumed
    2. Batteries and gasoline don't seem to have a difference, so the electric engine and gas engine should be equally efficient
    3. Past a certain point, fuel consumption doesn't increase linearly with weight, but with a square root.

    the force of a thruster goes up exponentially, I assume that its efficiency would to
    measuring the thrust produced in the equivalent of weight force of the concrete block 3
    L1 - 6.4
    L2 - 9.5
    L3 - 14
    L4 - 21.3
    L5 - 32.02
    L6 - 47.6
    L7 - 71.2
    Keep in mind that the units shown are of the force in equivalent to a number of concrete block 3
    the mass of the concrete block 3 is 35.5625
    also the mass of the thruster goes down when you upgrade is so the thrust to weight ratio will change.
    you should also note that the torque of the gass engine follows a similar path as wall as the rpm of the electric engine.
    I recommend making a dynamotor in a controlled environment. its not that hard. I've ben studying the game's physics engine and I've ben working on a 'cyclotron' of sorts to study the aerodynamic drag or general resistance as I call it and how it scales.
    im hoping to get a video out covering my findings soon.

    so if you had 2 lvl 5 engines connected to 2 wheels each, would that be more efficient in fuel than having 1 engine lvl 5 connected to 4?

    • @LutraLovegood
      @LutraLovegood 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Having two engines would increase weight, but it also means 10 more fuel available. If you want a longer trip though just connect one of those fuel thingies to a chest full of fuel, you'll have fuel for days (or not, if you're using your engine on max power). On the other hand with two engines you get more power per wheel, so it depends on what you want/need.

  • @KaneyoriHK
    @KaneyoriHK 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The normal like, consensus or design is that electric engines have better torque, they are better for moving something heavier than a gas engine, which provides speed, that is the main difference between the two, they are about equal in efficiency according to the data, but if you want to go fast, strap a gas engine on there, if you want power, strap an electric engine on there, this is how they were created, with these two functions in mind. Of course this logic isn't perfect, at times the speed counteracts the torque problem, but from what I've seen, this is how they work.

    • @LutraLovegood
      @LutraLovegood 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't really get your question. If you have a car with an even number of wheels, you need to connect at least two wheels. Connecting more wheels will increase fuel consumption, but also speed. This shouldn't make any difference. Well, maybe if your suspension isn't good enough and some wheels get off the ground, but that can also happen with two wheels.

    • @Dr-Pixel
      @Dr-Pixel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's more difficult to test with the weight of the vehicle. But in the end, the fuel consumption is speed*mass, so if you have a heavier vehicle, it consumes more fuel. I don't know the exact correlation, but the lighter, the better.

    Ok I saw this a month and a half after you post. And there now some thing new that changes how to look at the gas engine. Oil easier to get then before with the oil pools. And battery are hard to make. Also when testing the gas engine most the time your only moving a wheel. so the weight of the engine was not in the equation. where the thruster has to move the wheel as well as it own Weight. But that said it still not as efficient as the others. Fun video even the bots want in on it. :)

    • @Dr-Pixel
      @Dr-Pixel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yeah, I should have taken the weight of the engine into account, but if you build a car it's likely not the heaviest part. The numbers of the electric and gas engine are still comparable, and we all agree that the thruster is very inefficient.

    Your tests are quite misleading. The fuel consumption for the gas and electric engines is based on the work that they do. Spinning a small wheel on a bearing requires almost no work because the friction is very little. The friction also depends on the speed.
    If you wanted to compare more accurately the engines you need to give them the same work to do and test them with different work loads. One way of doing this is by pushing the wheels with something with a constant force. This way the friction force will be constant. Then using the total number of rotations you can get the distance that the force was applied over. Multiply that by the force and you get the energy. So in terms of relative efficiency you an just compare the total number of rotations when applying a constant force. Your test already does that to some extent but the friction of the wheels on the bearings isn't constant so it is not perfect. The gas engine uses a type of bell-like curve to determine the torque based on the speed, similar to a real life gas engine (it has a little bit of torque when not spinning, increases to a maximum at some relatively high rotation speed and then gradually decreases at higher speeds). The Electric engine tries to spin at a very specific speed and can apply quite a lot of torque regardless of the speed.
    The thruster functions in a completely different way. It applies a constant force and consumes a constant amount of fuel regardless of speed. This means that in theory you can get as high efficiency as you want because by moving faster it does more work per unit of fuel. In practice the air resistance limits this quite a lot. But if you have enough engines or a light enough flying vehicle you can move fairly efficiently by just going as fast as possible. Oh, and let's not forget that the thruster lets you fly :) .

    Good video there has been effort put into it. But i dont like the sounds effects

      Thanks for your feedback! I tend to do a lot of content where I go over the top with the editing, so that's where those effects come from. I'll keep this in mind.

    thruster

      electric engine and gas engine should have the same efficiency. It's also much easier to get gasoline.

    you lost me at the math xDD

  • @cubu1946
    @cubu1946 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    since the thruster seems so all over the place with the results... why try tons of different things to get tons of different results when you could have just ran the same test on the 1 wheel and multiple wheels multiple times lets say 6-10 times... and then get the average... just like any ordinary person would have done and then do all the extra stuff too...

    • @Dr-Pixel
      @Dr-Pixel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because I figured out a test that worked and produced the results I needed.

    Just use 1 gas and then the amount of time it takes to run out times 10 easy

    Efficiency means less fuel used

  • @Tommy-pv1vh
    @Tommy-pv1vh 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    So the heavier car the more gas needed

    • @Dr-Pixel
      @Dr-Pixel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly! Very heavy cars don't scale linearly, though.

    There is one problem. The electric engine need battery and battery is very rare

    Trusters are for flying builds not for wheels lol

    • @Dr-Pixel

      I know, but I wanted to compare their efficiency to engines, so I could make those diagrams.

  • @xcz73

    The bigger wheels uses more gas

  • @southerngecko5627
    @southerngecko5627 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    And heres the problem you cant measure thrust in rpm as you cant measure a wheels engine power in thrust

    did u know that the scrap engine use even less fuel than the lvl 5 engine u think im joking? nope watch one of scrapman's survival vid that the consumption rate is so low from using as a drill one drill les consumption unless u want use all of the fuel fast use it as a wheel xd one drill while no weight on the scrap engine is so low u can even use it without the container dunno y but thats how it works.... u will know what i mean when u see it

    • @Dr-Pixel
      @Dr-Pixel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The other engines should be more efficient, but as I showed you can spin a wheel for a really long time because it doesn't have a lot of weight.

    electric engines are better for weight but bad for speed

      I guess you're right. However, I saw no one posting those numbers, so I did assume it wouldn't be that easy.
      Anyway, I think it's a pretty cool thing that you can get to those numbers scientifically with in-game experiments.

    why would you test that on your survival world and not just use dev mode to spawn the parts you need.. so unnececary..

    • @Dr-Pixel
      @Dr-Pixel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      why you even spawn in the parts if you can just look at the code? That was never the point of it. It's to show that you can.
