Back in the 90's, when I was not even near of having internet or cell phones, I used the regular telephone line tone. It was an A, and it worked very well.
oh, I thought you were giving the telephone line as an alternative an "A" grade, not the note A=440. I really need to get my eyes checked out. the problem I see with that is that if you wanted to tune to a different frequency, say, A=432 hz, you would have no way to do that.
Referring to the pegs - if the string is too sharp you turn the peg towards you going down. If the string is flat, then turn the peg upwards away from you or clockwise.

Keep in mind (yourself and listeners) for the future: a few cautions: 1) Even your nice tuning fork will not be A-440 Hz when it is not at a comfortable room temperature. This is much like the chromatic tuner you showed. 2) While the A on a piano can be a good reference the other notes are not. "In a nutshell" this means that related tones are slightly mistuned by compressing the interval of the fifth (open sting intervals on violins, violas and cellos). If you reference the D, G and E from the recently tuned piano, your fine tuned strings will not agree. Tuning apps for phones and separate tuners have the same disadvantage as well (only the A, its tritone and octave will be in-tune). Using only the A and tuning by ear is the best and (as you mentioned) the ear needs the exercise. A piano tuner that uses the advanced "True Tuning" techniques will get it right and the piano sounds much richer in tone as well. 3) Also, flutes and other wind instruments do have some latitude in their ability to adjust. Oboe has less and that is why we have the tradition of tuning orchestras to the oboe. These other instruments tune best at near body temperature while the stringed instruments tune best at room temperature with and with mid-range humidity.
Yeh, and when you were a kid someone always drove you somewhere else. Does this mean we never need to learn how to drive a car? (except those who live in cities with good transportation and never leave them when alone.)
After someone else tunes your instrument, perhaps you can get them to practice for you as well. That will make it so much easier than playing all those troublesome scales, intervals and arpeggios and you can get back to your video games or chatting with your on-line mates.

Is it a new violin? If so then it will take a few weeks to settle in which unfortunately means you will have to keep tuning it each time you play it until it settles.
I have a fun and easy way of tuning. I play Chasing Cars from Snow Patrol. It's played as followed: alternating A and E strings, alternating G on the D string( 3rd finger) and E string, alternating D and E strings, finally alternating A and E strings again. You can even sing along to feel it out. You can sort of hear the same difference between G and D compared to A and E. Or just try to tune the 4th finger on the G string to the D string. Pro tip: You can just strum the violin like a guitar, no need to have a hard time with your bow.
I played guitar for 40 years until I took up mandolin. I played mando for 2 years before I plucked the strings of a friend's violin and found it has the exact tuning (ergo, same left hand) as the violin. Mandolin is the perfect transition instrument--notes are all in the same places--so no finger stickers on MY fiddle!! Now "ALL" I have to learn is setup, adjustment & bowing technique!
this is very informative, at least now i know how to tune when i'm not at home! a tip i learned form my guitar teacher is that when using the tuning fork, after knocking it, apply it to a "hollow" surface (ex: guitar body), it amplifies the sound a lot. hope this little tips help :) love all your violin tutorials!
Great video! For the tuning fork you can hold on the centre of your bridge between the A and D string on the top it will resonate through your instrument. Best to knock on the knee or something else that will not dent or bend the steel over time :) I train my students to tune with the A440 sound then as you mentioned A/D, D/G, E/A in that order tuning by ear in 5ths using A as our base. It is the way the orchestra tunes so is a good practice to build!
I have a 1964 violin, and it actually has a tuning pipe built into it. The "button" on the front of the violin that anchors the tailpiece is actually a tuning pipe (and it's attached over a small hole into the violin itself), such that if you blow into it, it produces the 'A' note. I've never seen any other violin that has that though.

Tip for the tuning fork: try putting the end of the handle against the little bump of bone behind your ear. It'll work just like bone conducting headphones and you'll be able to hear it really clearly. Bonus fact: Doctors also use this technique to see how the hearing of a patient is. If they can't hear well but they can hear the tuning fork at the same pitch, they know that the problem is with the eardrums (or something in front of that in the hearing process) since they can process the frequency when applied directly.

it can take time to recognize different pitch registers, for example higher or lower notes. The good news is you can train your ears over time you will get a better sense of it. I have made a piano recording for tuning purposes for my students...perhaps it is worthy to post on youtube for others to use

I have been matching pitches for over 70 years (isn't this what we all do when singing?), tuning guitars for 50 & my piano for 25 or so, but only recently learned to rapidly & perfectly tune my violin from watching YT vids. I have a German 440 A fork that is small enough to carry in my wallet. I tap it while held in my teeth, tune my bowed A string to it, then tune my bowed D&E strings to A, then G to D, repeating until PERFECTION is achieved. Looks like that what the orchestra is doing when tuning to the concertmasters A. As the instrument warms up in the artist's hands, (particularly after a Pagannini presto) this process may need repeating. Fine tuners make this easier, Knilling planetary tuners make it a PLEASURE.
Sort of - A above middle C (which is your A string) is 440 Hz, but when using equal temperament with A above middle C as 440 Hz, the frequency of the E string (E5) is approximately 659.255 Hz. It gets pretty complicated, but if you have a digital tuner, it should work all this out for you automatically as thats the point of them.

I used to use a tuning fork way back(on my acoustic guitar) but... I get dizzy @.@ so i have an electronic metronome with a built in tuner so yeah, I'm on your 4th way tuning list :D
You should just know - the other A's for example will just be too high or too low and if you go too low, the string will be too loose to accommodate it and if its too high, the string will most probably not let you go that tight anyway. The E string is 2 E's above middle C, the A is one A above middle C, the D is right net door to middle C and the G string is the g below middle C. Hope that helps. Alison
This is a problem i cant help with unless im physically there im afraid. Try pushing the peg in gently as you turn it? Or failing that, take it to a music shop to help you.
im not sure that you need to 'change' anything, you just play and the dial/needle/pointer/number whatever, will tell you what pitch you are currently playing, then you adjust your violin string until the tuner goes to the correct place or number (htz) Does that make sense?
I use a Snark clip on tuner for guitar but it also works for violin. The thing I really like about it is it is durable because I drop it quite a lot through the 3 year period of owning own and it still works well and the battery lasts a good long while which is excellent for something that is only 15 dollars or about 12 pounds
There's also PitchPerfect Musical Instrument Tuner for Windows (providing you have a microphone/USB interface) and Android. I use it for electric guitar and bass. But it also has options for banjo, baritone guitar, cello, double bass, fiddle, mandolin, ukulele, viola and violin. There are options for different tunings, if applicable.
well, I have been playing guitar for 30+ yrs, and piano, bass and other instrumets for a very long time, but have always wanted to play the violin.. I finally have my hands on one, and was obviously wanting to even know what notes the strings were and go from there, Very informative video, but maybe a little too much info for a total beginner. by the way, your English accent is just SOOO awesome. The Peterson Stroboclip is by far the best tuner you can get for any instrument. Super accurate with 'Sweetened' presets. Even their app tuner is fantastic. :)
There's an old saying that a person with two watches never knows what time it is. Years ago, I bought a Fender Strat at Guitar center. I also bought a tuning fork and a digital guitar tuner and was annoyed that the digital tuner said that the tuning fork was out of tune. So which tuning device was really correct? Heck, maybe both of them were not accurate.
I took lessons for 3 years. I stopped because my teacher was very technical but had no feeling no love for the violin. Hope I find another teacher some day. I still play.
I love my clip on tuner. I got it for 10 dollars on amazon for my uke, and its sensitive enough to pick up the vibration to read the notes from the playback from this video on my phone.
It sounds like the strings are not tight enough. The fine tuners are just that. They finely tune the string to the correct note that the peg just quite cant get close enough too. You need to use the pegs but do be careful and turn them slowly or else they will snap. GENTLY push the peg inwards as you turn to prevent the peg slipping and unwinding. I cant stress GENTLY and CAREFULLY enough though. Good luck :)
i wonder if you are tuning them to the wrong octave? They should not be floppy. Are you able to take the violin to your local music shop as they will probably tune it free of charge to get you going. Im not sure how much i can do to help without knowing whats going on without see the violin as you need someone to physically help you.
One method of tuning, is by first tune the A string and then tune by ear so you have perfect fifths. Another way is to use a piano to tune each sting separately according to the piano. In my opinion those two methods will not give the same results, in fact in the second case the violin will not be tuned in perfect fifths. The piano tuning is tempered (as in Well Tempered Klavier - remember Bach?) so the violin tuning will be tuned tempered. So here is my question: Would it be true that you shouldn’t tune in perfect perfect fifths when playing with a piano? How do orchestra players tune their violins when they accompany a piano concert? When I attend a piano concert, it seems like the violin players tune their violins to perfect fifths. Your response will be very much appreciated.
rather than that, holding the fork on the bridge will give a louder tone for the violin rather than the body - which would not be recommended really, but probably ok for guitar
Can you show us how to tune an electric violin. Iam hoping to learn on an electric violin, as I need a silent practice. And hopefully I can buy your lessons on line and use them with an electric violin.

I bought a brand-new violin (one you recommended- thanks!) I've never picked up a musical instrument before in my life. I don't understand how just listening to sounds can make the violin be in tune. I see the little pegs, and I can tell that the string is not making the same noise as yours, but I have no idea how to actually DO it. How do you know which way or how much to turn the pegs to get the right sound? I don't think I can just move the pegs around randomly, then pluck them and hope that the string magically makes the right sound...

Google for QPitch, it is a nice program that can tell you the frequencies and notes. I googled for the particular octaves of the EADG of the violin. "Mandolin & violin strings are G3=196Hz, D4=293.7Hz, A4=440Hz, E5=659.3Hz". Is this correct?

you just train and learn. You just have to try and remember the sounds as you go along. You cant just 'learn' these things as they really come with time...

Can u help? My pegs keep slipping and they won't stay in tune and I really don't know what to do, I have tried hiderstine paste (or whatever it's called) to stiffen up the pegs but it didn't do anything :( ( both my electric violin and my regular violin do this) help!
Hate to be a pest with my questions, but I am deeply grateful that you are there and that you care about us. Thank you doesn't seem nearly enough to express my gratitude. My question is about using an electronic chromatic tuner. The Cecilio Model 92-D came with my violin. When I pluck the A string I get results with a number then a letter, eg 3D. The instructions don't reference this and I've not yet found an online reference. What does the '3D' indicate? It might be that I've not yet learned how to use the tuner properly. My inference is that it is recognizing the tone as the pitch/tone for the third position on the D string. This would be lower in pitch than the open A or higher? . . . so, if lower, I need to tighten the string or vice versa? I've watched many of your videos - thank you, gracious young lady - but I've not seen you speak to the relationship between notes in varying positions on each of the strings and how those tones relate to positions on neighboring strings. If I've missed it, please point me to the video. As you can easily tell I'm still learning a great deal about music scales.
3D most likely refers to the 3rd D from the bottom of the piano. It could mean that your A string is tuned as if your 3rd finger were on the A string to make a 'D'. I dont know what the answer is because Im not familiar with that tuner. I hate almost all tuners except the D'Addario NS tuner as its the most accurate one I have found, designed for the violin specifically and I use it personally. I have a review of it on my channel somewhere...
Thank you, Alison! I was hopeful that you had seen this question and might direct me, but I understand that it is not your job to know about all the accessories that are out there. I failed to mention in my OP that the tuner is set for violin. I should have thought that would mean that all references would be to violin tuning and not the piano. Your answer makes a great deal of sense because even my untrained ear hears the tone as far too low. I've contacted Cecilio and complained of the paucity of information in their user manual - information that true neophytes need more than others. Perhaps they will respond with better information. Or, perhaps others of your followers have experienced and resolved the issue and will respond. I've searched and found no specifics for this tuner. That leads me to another question - again with apologies for wasting your time and trying your patience - do you know of a forum where we beginners might go to pose our questions and aid each other as we go? If so, I would value your advice highly. Again, bless you for all that you do for us.
It seems to work fine from what you have said and it is telling you your string is tuned wrongly. If you say its too low, then the 3D most likely refers to the 3rd D from the bottom on a piano. Middle C is known as C4 for example. Its working fine.
I have a question. Is there a way to lower the action of my violin??? Could I simply sand off the top edge of the bridge to make the string lower to the finger board? cause I find that the strings are a bit high on the fret board even up to the nut. Is there a standard measurement of the height of the strings to the fret board. Thank you
I disagree with the comment that the electronic tuner might cause your ear become lazy...I see it as TRAINING ones ear to what is the correct pitch. Over time you can here the correct pitch you want . Using it as a training device and then 1. you don't waist time tuning and 2. your ear learns what correct pitch sounds like. I compare it to learning a golf swing, weird yes but hold on... it's much easier to learn a correct swing from the beginning as apposed to unlearning a bad swing and then relearning a good swing .

oh I see what you mean. you just need to be very careful when tuning and try to tune i very little steps rather than yanking the string too much. It will take a while to tune a string from fresh, but if you string the string up then turn the pegs really far and fast, you will break them

For several years now d'Addario has a fine little tuner that clamps onto the shoulder of the violin or viola.

this is the hardest part of playing a violin I think. especially when your just starting
I used to use a tuning fork way back(on my acoustic guitar) but... I get dizzy @.@
so i have an electronic metronome with a built in tuner so yeah, I'm on your 4th way tuning list :D
You should just know - the other A's for example will just be too high or too low and if you go too low, the string will be too loose to accommodate it and if its too high, the string will most probably not let you go that tight anyway.
The E string is 2 E's above middle C, the A is one A above middle C, the D is right net door to middle C and the G string is the g below middle C. Hope that helps. Alison
This is a problem i cant help with unless im physically there im afraid. Try pushing the peg in gently as you turn it? Or failing that, take it to a music shop to help you.

im not sure that you need to 'change' anything, you just play and the dial/needle/pointer/number whatever, will tell you what pitch you are currently playing, then you adjust your violin string until the tuner goes to the correct place or number (htz) Does that make sense?
I use a Snark clip on tuner for guitar but it also works for violin. The thing I really like about it is it is durable because I drop it quite a lot through the 3 year period of owning own and it still works well and the battery lasts a good long while which is excellent for something that is only 15 dollars or about 12 pounds
My husband owns a Snark. Maybe I'll borrow it - or have him do it.
There's also PitchPerfect Musical Instrument Tuner for Windows (providing you have a microphone/USB interface) and Android. I use it for electric guitar and bass. But it also has options for banjo, baritone guitar, cello, double bass, fiddle, mandolin, ukulele, viola and violin. There are options for different tunings, if applicable.

The Peterson Stroboclip is by far the best tuner you can get for any instrument. Super accurate with 'Sweetened' presets. Even their app tuner is fantastic. :)

There's an old saying that a person with two watches never knows what time it is. Years ago, I bought a Fender Strat at Guitar center. I also bought a tuning fork and a digital guitar tuner and was annoyed that the digital tuner said that the tuning fork was out of tune. So which tuning device was really correct? Heck, maybe both of them were not accurate.

I took lessons for 3 years. I stopped because my teacher was very technical but had no feeling no love for the violin. Hope I find another teacher some day. I still play.
I love my clip on tuner. I got it for 10 dollars on amazon for my uke, and its sensitive enough to pick up the vibration to read the notes from the playback from this video on my phone.
It sounds like the strings are not tight enough. The fine tuners are just that. They finely tune the string to the correct note that the peg just quite cant get close enough too. You need to use the pegs but do be careful and turn them slowly or else they will snap. GENTLY push the peg inwards as you turn to prevent the peg slipping and unwinding. I cant stress GENTLY and CAREFULLY enough though. Good luck :)

i wonder if you are tuning them to the wrong octave? They should not be floppy. Are you able to take the violin to your local music shop as they will probably tune it free of charge to get you going. Im not sure how much i can do to help without knowing whats going on without see the violin as you need someone to physically help you.

One method of tuning, is by first tune the A string and then tune by ear so you have perfect fifths. Another way is to use a piano to tune each sting separately according to the piano. In my opinion those two methods will not give the same results, in fact in the second case the violin will not be tuned in perfect fifths. The piano tuning is tempered (as in Well Tempered Klavier - remember Bach?) so the violin tuning will be tuned tempered. So here is my question: Would it be true that you shouldn’t tune in perfect perfect fifths when playing with a piano? How do orchestra players tune their violins when they accompany a piano concert? When I attend a piano concert, it seems like the violin players tune their violins to perfect fifths. Your response will be very much appreciated.
I have always tuned to a piano when Im accompanied with a piano. An orchestra will tune to the oboe - even with a piano present.

rather than that, holding the fork on the bridge will give a louder tone for the violin rather than the body - which would not be recommended really, but probably ok for guitar

I bought a brand-new violin (one you recommended- thanks!) I've never picked up a musical instrument before in my life. I don't understand how just listening to sounds can make the violin be in tune. I see the little pegs, and I can tell that the string is not making the same noise as yours, but I have no idea how to actually DO it. How do you know which way or how much to turn the pegs to get the right sound? I don't think I can just move the pegs around randomly, then pluck them and hope that the string magically makes the right sound...

Google for QPitch, it is a nice program that can tell you the frequencies and notes.
I googled for the particular octaves of the EADG of the violin. "Mandolin & violin strings are G3=196Hz, D4=293.7Hz, A4=440Hz, E5=659.3Hz". Is this correct?

Can u help? My pegs keep slipping and they won't stay in tune and I really don't know what to do, I have tried hiderstine paste (or whatever it's called) to stiffen up the pegs but it didn't do anything :( ( both my electric violin and my regular violin do this) help!

Hate to be a pest with my questions, but I am deeply grateful that you are there and that you care about us. Thank you doesn't seem nearly enough to express my gratitude.
My question is about using an electronic chromatic tuner. The Cecilio Model 92-D came with my violin. When I pluck the A string I get results with a number then a letter, eg 3D. The instructions don't reference this and I've not yet found an online reference. What does the '3D' indicate? It might be that I've not yet learned how to use the tuner properly. My inference is that it is recognizing the tone as the pitch/tone for the third position on the D string. This would be lower in pitch than the open A or higher? . . . so, if lower, I need to tighten the string or vice versa?
I've watched many of your videos - thank you, gracious young lady - but I've not seen you speak to the relationship between notes in varying positions on each of the strings and how those tones relate to positions on neighboring strings. If I've missed it, please point me to the video. As you can easily tell I'm still learning a great deal about music scales.
3D most likely refers to the 3rd D from the bottom of the piano. It could mean that your A string is tuned as if your 3rd finger were on the A string to make a 'D'.
I dont know what the answer is because Im not familiar with that tuner.
I hate almost all tuners except the D'Addario NS tuner as its the most accurate one I have found, designed for the violin specifically and I use it personally.

I failed to mention in my OP that the tuner is set for violin. I should have thought that would mean that all references would be to violin tuning and not the piano. Your answer makes a great deal of sense because even my untrained ear hears the tone as far too low.
I've contacted Cecilio and complained of the paucity of information in their user manual - information that true neophytes need more than others. Perhaps they will respond with better information. Or, perhaps others of your followers have experienced and resolved the issue and will respond. I've searched and found no specifics for this tuner.
That leads me to another question - again with apologies for wasting your time and trying your patience - do you know of a forum where we beginners might go to pose our questions and aid each other as we go? If so, I would value your advice highly.

It seems to work fine from what you have said and it is telling you your string is tuned wrongly.
If you say its too low, then the 3D most likely refers to the 3rd D from the bottom on a piano.
Middle C is known as C4 for example.

How do I use an electric chromatic tuner to tune my violin?
I would tune to someone’s guitar, or mandolin, or other in tune instrument. My first instrument in the early 60’s was this 4 note plastic pitchpipe.
Would you recommend using tuning apps on iPhones? There are a lot of free ones on the market and a lot of people claim they work well.

I have a question. Is there a way to lower the action of my violin??? Could I simply sand off the top edge of the bridge to make the string lower to the finger board? cause I find that the strings are a bit high on the fret board even up to the nut. Is there a standard measurement of the height of the strings to the fret board. Thank you
Bring it to a luthier. The bridge needs to be uniquely fitted to the violin. The arch of the bridge needs to match the arch of the fingerboard.

I disagree with the comment that the electronic tuner might cause your ear become lazy...I see it as TRAINING ones ear to what is the correct pitch. Over time you can here the correct pitch you want . Using it as a training device and then 1. you don't waist time tuning and 2. your ear learns what correct pitch sounds like. I compare it to learning a golf swing, weird yes but hold on... it's much easier to learn a correct swing from the beginning as apposed to unlearning a bad swing and then relearning a good swing .

Even better, try tuning the violin through any other method, and then use the clip on to check if you were correct.
oh I see what you mean. you just need to be very careful when tuning and try to tune i very little steps rather than yanking the string too much. It will take a while to tune a string from fresh, but if you string the string up then turn the pegs really far and fast, you will break them
