    Finally, a teacher who can actually explain how to tune a violin in great detail. Excellent info, and thanks for going into all the specifics. Amazing lesson!

    Joy my teacher from many years ago would first tune the violin and make me play two open strings to hear the fifth. He would them untune one of the strings and get me to correct it. I learnt to tune in a short while. Thanks for your superb videos.

    Thanks for a lovely video. My violin teacher taught me the fifths method. You can hear a pulsating sub-tone that increases in frequency until the fifth matches and the violin springs to life. I try that now with cello and it works but it hard to reach the fine tuner. My cello teacher taught me to use harmonics instead.

    Great video. Here is a tip... if you adjust your strings so that the pegs line up at a 90 degree angle (up and down) it will make working the pegs much easier. The peg will fit you hand more naturally and you will have more leverage. I prefer my instrument without fine tuners so I find this helpful.

    Very interesting your method tuning a violin. My teacher never showed us the method where to place the left handed fingers for tuning. I tried you method and viola tuned the violin. Also, tried placing the violin on my knee and turning by plucking the strings. My wife has a violin equipped with four fine tuners and she finds having them much easier to tune. Thank you for your video. They are incredibly worth watching.

      Would you be kind enough to tell me how?

    • @Jimaction1
      @Jimaction1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pawfruit4095 Absolutely. Slipping pegs are a problem for most violinists. It's very simple actually. First, use your finger to keep tension on the string as you unwind enough to a point where you can push the string toward the L/R peg without unraveling it. Next, tighten the string against the wall in the pegbox so it won't allow the peg to slip out by creating a wedge effect. Then, tighten your strings to the tune you're seeking and it should remain in place for a long time. You want to keep the strings as close to the sides of the pegbox as you tighten them down. Let me know if this works well for you!

    Thanks for the guidance ma'am...I have a question...what is the most appropriate placement of the strings on the bridge ? I noticed that if my strings are placed too close to each other, I often hit two strings accidentally

    • @gabriellas2325
      @gabriellas2325 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Any violin I've seen has had grooves in the bridge where the string sit. Hitting 2 strings at once could be that the bridge is too flat and need to be re-shaped to be more curved so that the string height differs just a bit more. Seem to be pretty common on very cheap violins that don't come with proper setup.

    DearJoy! Hello from Chris E. In usa. I am tuning with a Korg chromatic tuner. Its ivory color and very plain. I can tune by perfect fifths but am lazy! I like to get my instrument in tune fast. Im trying to master vibrato so maybe using perfect fifths would give a better vibrato, maybe even wider. I dont know. All I know is Im matching another teachers vibrato pretty well. I also have been known to use a A 440 tuning fork but not recently. I like equal temprament because that is what I used with electric guitar. My old teacher used a piano and I think it was somewhere near A435. Thanks for your wonderful vidio on tuning to perfect fifths. Please keep posted. Bye for now😅

    I just have to say... thank you so much for this video. Until now I've been deathly scared of tuning the violin (and understandably so - the very day I bought my violin, I managed to snap the D string), and other long tutorials didn't seem to be helping with my pegs slipping so much. After watching this concise tutorial, I managed to finally tune the strings and actually fix the pegs in place for once. Thanks!
    Also, the "Thank you for tuning in" at the beginning... was that supposed to be a pun?

      Hi Jose, yes, you are correct. When the pegs (all pegs) are turning away from our face, the pitch would go higher. Happy trying!

    Joy, thank you for your channel. What violin would you recommend for a bigginner- intermediate player. Also I have such difficulty reaching my 4th finger to it's proper position. I s there a smaller ladies size violin you recommend?

    • @JoyLeeViolin
      @JoyLeeViolin  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some small adult violinists play 7/8 size violin. I am a small person myself, but I play a full size violin. I believe one can always train the hands to adopt. There are many violins which could be good for beginner and intermediate players. However it's hard to give you a general answer, because it has to do with personal goals and budget.

      @@JoyLeeViolin thank you for your answer. Have you done videos comparing different violin brands for beginner intermediate players? That would be so helpful. Thank you.

      Sorry to hear that Chrissy. We all break a string here and there in the process of learning.Try to turn the peg really little by little ( mm). Also please remember to push to peg to the other side as you turn so that it stays.

      Hi Osama, in this video I use a metronome/tuner Dr. Beat called "Boss- DB-90 ". It's a large machine which can be used for many other functions also. Happy practising!

      @@JoyLeeViolin actually l am looking forward to tuning by use of reference note- like in your case where the metronome/tuner is playing a note and you are trying to match their tones through the tuning process - Otis like playing a long a recorded musical piece
