6 months agoI hadn’t put a moisturizer on my face in 45 years. When my 45th bday rolled around I decided it was time to take care of my skin and fell into theTH-cam rabbit hole. Done regret a minute of it and my skin looks amazing. Now I moisturize day and night
i came across this young woman with the most gorgeous, perfect, poreless glowing skin and i asked her what she used on it. nothing. no moisturizer, no sunscreen. what kind of cleanser? coast bar soap. lol. she’s the second woman with gorgeous skin i’ve met who uses nothing. the other woman who had strikingly gorgeous skin didn’t even generally wash her face! sometimes less is more. if i didn’t hyperpigment so easily i’d probably stop using sunscreen and stop washing my face too. ever since i minimized my routine and cut out all leave-on actives (wash thoroughly and moisturize at night, spot treat the occasional tiny whitehead or blackhead, sunscreen in morn) i can see that my acid mantle/skin barrier has been restored (water beads up on my face when i wash it, like it’s sitting on oil) and my skin is looking better than ever. the less you mess with your face and the stronger your barrier, i think the less you need honestly.
Thank you . I have been using Retin A for a month now and in the morning when I use my Clinique Smart Moisturizer, I feel burn on my face! I will try the Vanicream instead. No acne. I am 47 yo.
Hi Dr Dray, I had to come and post to say, thank you! I have been having problem skin and breakouts for a while, so I changed my skincare routine and added a retinol (CeraVe resurfacing serum.) I was having nice results as far as skin resurfacing, but breakouts were in fact getting worse. In this video you mentioned how salicylic acid can sometimes cause problems with retinol. A lightbulb went off for me. I was using a salicylic acid face cleaner! After watching your video I cut it out of my routine and in only a few days I have noticed my breakouts are already clearing up and im having less new ones. Thank you so much for the posting this! It has been a very frustrating situation, so this information was truly helpful and much appreciated!
I am quite impressed and happy with your product recommendations regarding my roceaca . Huge improvement and smoother, even toned skin. Kudos to you Doc!
Another great choice is Curel fragrance free lotion. It’s thick and occlusive but is not greasy at all. Leaves the skin so comforted and is a semi matte finish. Also has ceramides. Hi, could you share your favourite cream that doesn’t aggravate acne, please? I’ve tried LRP Lipikar and had the same problem as you. I’d love to know about your moisturiser experience 🤗
My retinol definitely works a lot better when I apply it first and then I use a thick mineral oil based moisturizer after. The peeling stage was awful lol but so worth it now!
@Melissa. Same here. I apply retinol after cleansing. I realised i get better results this way. then i use clinique Hydroboost night moisturizer.. My skin has really improved.
I LOVE putting Vaseline over top of regular products, including a facial oil and moisturizer. It’s really cut down on the amount of peeling and irritation I was experiencing using tret (0.025%)
On the days off of your retinoids/retinol products it’s very helpful to help the sensitivity and dryness. Just don’t put Vaseline on after you’ve applied them - it’ll make them keel penetrating deeper and your skin will become very dry and sting a lot! I learned this the hard way and then saw a video advising to not to it a few days later 😅
I have recently been mixing my cerave lotion with tretinoin cream in the palm of my hand before applying. Do you think it dilutes the percentage of tretinoin though?
@@heidizeiler1269 No. Less is more when using tretinoin and using it in excess, will not speed up the results. If you have any doubts, check with your Derm or a pharmacist.

I'm glad you made this video dr Dray. I'm using tretinoin cream, I apply it before bed on moisturised skin (I have a bath/shower about 7-8pm, apply on my skincare, except tret, right after). I tolerate it very well, even at the beginning I had very minimal side effects. But I keep seeing on instagram (from some dermatologists, other experts, not random people) that applying tretinoin on top of moisturiser can affect absorption (active vit A won't reach deep into the skin, occlusives and emollients are to blame) so basically you waste most of the product🤷♀️. I cannot apply tret on dry skin, 30 min after washing my face, my skin will feel like Sahara desert😩 (plus I love my toners, essences, serums etc. I have plenty of those😬)
Another super useful video, as always. I've been prescribed adapalene by my dorm and was given no instructions how to use it; that's how I discovered you 3 years ago and I still remain a loyal fan. Thanks for everything!
Happy Monday, Dr Dray! Even though I don't use any type of retinol, I appreciate the moisturizer recommendations. Thank you! Hope you have a cozy evening!! 💖
Depending on what percentage of Retinol you want to use, I like The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion. It’s Retinol in Squalene as a buffer. Then put moisturizer on top.
I found that when using tretinoin, I need to put another layer of cream on my creases of the sides of my nose to avoid the itchy irritation that it gets
@@stephaniesmith4114 you put a bit of vaseline on the interested area and when it is almost entirely absorbed you put the tretinoin. You just have to be careful not to put it on the vaseline when its still in a spreadable state, as it will mix with the tretinoin and lead to patchy application.
So I'm on a formula of Tretinoin 0.015% + Niacinamide 4% + Azelaic Acid4% (Skin+Me subscription, previously prescribed Differin by my GP and it kinda ruined my skin a little), and as my moisturiser I use thr ELF Holy Hydration moisturizer without problem. Occasionally I'll use the Laneige Water Sleep Mask, especially if I'm experiencing extra flakiness (my boyfriend's stubble "exfoliates" my chin something awful when he gives me a kiss, bless him). I did used to use face wipes for quick refreshes or for the surface removal of makeup, but when I switched to pure water wipes/aqua wipes, I found my breakouts lessened so much. really helpful video. Thank you Dr. Dray. Would you consider doing a video on which facial spa treatments you would and would not recommend to the general public and why? For example, do you think going for regular chemical peels at a spa would help people with acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, etc.?
As a child, whenever I got rashes, allergies, bumpy amd itchy patches on my skin, my mom would always recommend La Roche Posay. it was always so cool and calming, instantly moisturizing 😍
I concur with this my dermatologist said the same thing and added that if used together right away it will make tretinoin too powerful and do more harm than good.
I used to use the cerave skin renewing night cream and it was amazing. Perfect for wintertime, too. Now I’m trying the versed rich moisture cream. It’s pretty good and a bit more hydrating than the cerave.
I like both in different ways. Versed is better for daytime, in my opinion. Very nice under make up and It’s more hydrating. I need a hydrating toner or essence before the versed, but my skin is so dry in winter. The cerave is less hydrating, but thicker and it locks anything underneath, like a toner, right in. I just got the Laroche Posay Cicaplast Baume and it might be my absolute winter favorite. It’s only been a few days, but it’s gotten rid of redness and my skin is so smooth and hydrated. It’s a small tube, but a little goes a long way. I’ve been trying a lot of moisturizers lately haha

@@AzureKite191 Putting on moisturizer first and waiting for it to fully dry (20-30 mins) and then applying retin-a helpd the absorption in the skin and reduces irritation. Dr Dray has a few videos on retin-a/tretinoin in which she highlights this :)

I'm REALLY liking the Aveeno Calm & Restore Gel Cream moisturizer.
Me too! I use to shell out 60-70$ every other month at Sephora for moisturizers but the Aveeno one feels like a gel but hydrates and moisturizes like a cream! Its amazing.
I know me tooo! I didn’t think I would. They look gimmicky but I love it so much I went back and bought the whole line and very pleased

Like I mean, I cleanse my face with my gentle cleanser, then follow up with my adapalene and then lastly my neutrogena rapid wrinkle repair cream? Is it okay like this?
I use Avène RetrinAL 0.1 nightly after washing my face. AFTER applying the retinaldehyde, I put on Burt's Bees Sensitive Calming Solutions night ceam, which is actually a combo of rice extract, aloe, and cotton. I find this works better than putting on moisturizer first. I also use the night cream on my eyes - it's gentle enough. Dr Dray's advice regarding retinaldehyde has been spot on - I gave up on tretinoin years ago because of the irritation, and now, the Avène has given me gorgeous skin, wrinkle free - at 64, Thank you Dr Dray!
I love the cerave renewing night cream! I've been using it with for a few weeks now and my sensitive skin tolerates it well.

Thank you, you answered sooooo many questions for me. I have wasted so much money trying to find the right things. I takes so long to stop believing the claims in marketing for products. You are appreciated.
WHO IS NOT MOISTURIZING DAILY? lol. But seriously though....
lol literally me @ my BF... thankfully he's finally starting to get it
Twice daily!
Meee... I don't have any moisturiser
I have used Retin A and Renova for over 25 years every other night Mary Kay pink night cream. Being over 70 people think I am 58. So I swear by both.
I use the Vanicream Lotion ...I am very sensitive and this works great!
Thank you . I have been using Retin A for a month now and in the morning when I use my Clinique Smart Moisturizer, I feel burn on my face! I will try the Vanicream instead. No acne. I am 47 yo.
Hi Dr Dray,
I had to come and post to say, thank you!
You are the best esthetician on TH-cam❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I am quite impressed and happy with your product recommendations regarding my roceaca . Huge improvement and smoother, even toned skin. Kudos to you Doc!
Looking back and found this super video from the vault.
Another great choice is Curel fragrance free lotion. It’s thick and occlusive but is not greasy at all. Leaves the skin so comforted and is a semi matte finish. Also has ceramides. I’ve been a die hard Cerave cream in the tub user, and I’ve been reaching for the Curel. The Curel sinks in immediately too.
Bonus - it’s $7 for a huge bottle!
Not moisture enough.

How about serum? Should I apply serum first and retinol the after?
I love that she/ u are so on point with the real information I'll keep watching you
I LOVE putting Vaseline over top of regular products, including a facial oil and moisturizer. It’s really cut down on the amount of peeling and irritation I was experiencing using tret (0.025%)
Isn't this called "slugging"? I've heard this method used in another type of skin care routine to prevent wrinkles as well.

When I was on Retin-A, my dermatologist told me to mix a lentil size amount, with my moisturizer. The result for me, was no peeling.

@@MarissaCooperButPoor what is the buffering technique?
@@stephaniesmith4114 you put a bit of vaseline on the interested area and when it is almost entirely absorbed you put the tretinoin. You just have to be careful not to put it on the vaseline when its still in a spreadable state, as it will mix with the tretinoin and lead to patchy application.
Can you show us how you apply moisturiser to damp skin? And how long do you wait before applying tretinoin afterwards
I use retinol for long time , I mixed it with cerave and it does not dry out my skin .prescribed by my dermatologist for acne .
Great video, thanks. Doc.can we use simple avocado or other oil on face instead of moisturizing creme or lotion?
