I have found that my big arms (30+ years turning wrenches) don't fit to do this from the bottom. Have found though with the 2.0L normally aspirated engine it is easier to remove the bracket from underneath (that attaches to the bottom of intake) and then remove intake manifold and everything is exposed. Rubber intake gaskets are cheap and in a pinch "may" be reused (though don't recommend). With the axle and electric power steering in the way this works for big arms. Just a FYI. Great video.
discovering some things about these hondas. My 2018 was starting to slow start after a while. Changed the battery and put a new one with manufacture recommended ccd amps. Still slow starting but was better. Yesterday found out from honda dealer that the valve cover gasket is leaking out the back, and was leaking oil all over the starter. Today after trying to start 4 times it finally turned over, but smelled something burnt. Definitely need a new starter at this point and don't plan to start it back up yet till after replacing both of these things. I don't have a car lift, but I'm pretty sure I can get this done with a floor jack, I'm just hoping I can get to those bolts on starter with a single 6 inch long extension and not something longer. really don't care if the starter is aftermarket, just need a working starter. Dealer wants me to fork over $1,000 for the replacement and I'm finding that to be price gouging from as long as it took you to do the swap and cost for part.
Hi I have a 2016 civic I have the issue you describe. Turn the key 3-4 times before it starts thought it was the key, than the battery, about to replace the starter, just changed the oil it was about a quart low. Did doing this solve your problem
@@matthewlang777 your situation really depends on the starting process. If you turn the key 3 or 4 times and all you hear is a click noise under the car than its the starter. But if you turn the key 3 or 4 times and hear nothing at all than it can be much more sophisticated for your issue. Being its a 2016, the key you have for starting your car is a chipped key, make sure there are no magnets or metal bedazzled decorative materials that are advertised to be designer items surrounding the ignition because its not uncommon that people put those on the key ignition to spice their interior looks up. "Bedazzle Crap" You have to listen closely to know your problem. But thats mainly for those who know how to work on vehicles to solve the issue. Being that yours is a 2016 I can see the starter going out by now but also, if you do not hear clicking, grinding, etc when turning the key to start the car than it can be something else going on that your not aware of.
Wow. I’m just over 80k miles on my 2017 civic and literally tonight I’m 99% positive my starter is done for. Battery reads at 12.7v but when I try to start it, it goes straight to accessory mode without even trying to start.
@@chibidarkwolf25 yeah they go out around that time this customer had issue some time it started some times it didn’t she would wait few minutes turn key on off on off and eventually it cranked Anyways I would highly highly recommend put in original starter find good mechanic to do it for u. It's really not very hard if you have some experience. It might look harder in the video than it really is. Actually this k20c2 engine is pretty damn easy to work on for the most part.
HI RB mechanic I have a question . how you can be sure you starter was change ? I see you are in NJ WHERE exactly you are located ?thank you for the answer !
Hello so I recently change the starter on my Honda civic but I used a after market starter on it. Everything has been good until a couple days where I had problems with my car not turning on, I disconnected the crank sensor and battery connector and I put them back on and after thta they work. I was wondering if it could be that the after market starter that I bought could be the problem
Not sure what u did why u did I would had to listen to it when it was acting up did the engine turn over before u did this? Starter has nothing to do with crank sensor Start need to turn the engine over regardless there’s siginal from crank sensor or not it should had turned over
Hey Ralph Bob The Mechanic!, how many miles on that 2017 Honda Civic? So I can tell my friends that have a 17 they need to do, "Preventive Maintenance" by changing the starter.👍👍✌️🤔🤔
Also having a hard time trying to find the right valve cover gasket to replace it. I have same exact engine, but from my understanding there is 2 types in the Civic EX. If someone could send me a link somewhere maybe a part number? Much help appreciated.
I wouldn’t go by link just go to dealer parts and give them vin number. It also same price if u buy original or online so go original and get ur correct
It's not as bad as this video makes it look I promise. Yes it's tight quarters but all the Hondas put the starters on the bottom and back of trans and motor. But deff break bolts loose and use electric ratchet if you have one to speed process up
Honda has the worst design ever for Starter replacement. It sucks. Toyota engineers are more intelligent. U don't need to go under the car to replace starter on a corolla. Toyota is the best period.
just replaced mine. very very bad. took 4 hours to do. sometimes do not even see what you are doing. lots of trial and error. light is very scarce in that spot. the guy who designed the placement of upper bolt on starter had never installed one in his whole life. Had to work under the vehicle for hours. unbelievable. very very dumb design. will never buy honda again. going Toyota next time.
