- Do you need to Replace the starter motor the Honda Civic 2012 to 2015 but don't know where to start? This video tutorial shows you step-by-step how to do it!
Our Honda Civic (2012 - 2015) manual covers petrol and diesel engines, and includes videos for some of the most common jobs, which you can see here in this playlist. Get the full manual haynes.com/en-...
What's covered:
Honda Civic 2012 - 2015
Honda CR-V 2012 - 2016
Exclusions:
Does not include information specific to CNG or hybrid models
Mounting bolts are 14mm, manifold bracket has 2 10mm and 1 12mm. You dont need to take off the exhaust
I have changed many on the 1.8L and have never removed the exhaust or axle. The best approach is to take the passenger wheel off and use a long extension to reach the starter bolts. I am not touching rusty exhaust bolts here in NY that most certainly will break.
@@marcsmith3881I don't blame you. Now I know if I ever have to change this starter out I can get around that.
@@marcsmith3881that’s exactly how you do it
@@marcsmith3881 , here in San Diego and have this job tomorrow. I will go your route.
@@elmayimbe_the_amateur_mechanic I hope it goes smoothly.
Seems that Honda installed the starter and oil pan then 3D printed the rest of the car around it. Pathetic and greedy engineering if you ask me.
To anyone starting out on this job, do not be mislead by how easy they make this look. This is not an overly complicated job, but don’t take it too lightly. It’s definitely frustrating, and not an easy one. Even going about it as they say exactly, there is a VERY finite space to work with. Not near as much as it looks like in this video. This is a time consuming and quite frustrating job, and will test the limits of your mental dictionary of profanity. I’m not sure I could recommend going about this a different way, because this is the only way I’ve done it. But there are several videos out there of people going through the wheel well, but it looks like it’s a pain regardless. I’m not a professional auto mechanic, I spent years working on aircraft, so I have plenty of mechanical aptitude I’m not sure I’d recommend this task to a beginner DIYer. Good luck. See the other comments for the bolt sizes.
CNC Electrical/ mechanical tech here. I found on cars is always having the right tool for the job. Swivel sockets are a requirement in tight corners. So many times I have thought jesus its 2 bolts and a couple connectors... how hard can it be?? 4 hours later blood sweat and tears . I will send it to the shop next time. LOL
Getting the exhaust pipe off was a non starter for me, so I had to work around it. The biggest hassle in my case, was removing all of the electrical connectors, in a very limited space, without breaking them. It was very difficult to see how each connector, dis-connected.
I agree
"install the upper starter bolt" she made that sound so smooth and easy didn't she? For some reason they skipped that whole part didnt they? and those dont look like female hands thats for sure. BEWARE! Just guiding the starter into position with the wires connected is a task by itself, notice they skipped that part too. If your not mechanically inclined, dont waste your time. From underneath you literally cant see the top bolt because the way it designed. Makes it almost impossible for one person to use a mirror to see the bolt holes location while trying to insert the top bolt with your other hand. These videos are deceptional, the engineers actually design these cars on purpose to attack the DIYers. The way I did it was inserting the top bolt into the starter BEFORE putting the starter into position, letting the bolt hang gently on the starters top hole, bolting the lower bolt, then going back to the upper bolt to tighten it. Listen to Jason and remove the intake. Good luck and BLM(the statement).
Was taking the exhaust off beneficial? I've seen others do without it but made it look way harder
I ended up only taking the spring bolts out of the front of the exhaust and was able to move it over enough to reach. I actually ended up stripping one of the bolts so that became my next repair. I didn’t think about removing the manifold to go from top down, but it’s probably worth that extra trouble. It’s a huge pain doing this work from underneath. I was able to gain more access by removing the passenger tire as well.
Wd 40 on the exhaust bolts and very carefully use an impact wrench to get them off. I did it and it was easy.
Liquid wrench or seafoam deep creep is a penetrant. WD40 is not. If you don't believe me watch the tests on the project farm TH-cam channel. Would work much better in this application
Pretty clean bolts for a 2012 civic...
In a perfect world of non existant rust and corroded bolts this video would work..😂😂
San Diegooooooo!!!!! 😂😅🎉
@@JohnBotero-e1o absolutely true my friend, that bottom bolt on my car is whats messing me up
lol, same thing i was thinking
Just paid $1200 to replaced starter Motor at Honda Dealer. Should have watched this video.
Ok I feel better now. I paid the same at a dealer. If I was still single without a family I’d try and do this myself but I don’t have the time.
There is a lot missing in the guide. I'm in the process of doing it now and trust me the $1200 the dealership charges is worth it. Without a lift it's takes at least an entire day to do this repair.
Took me an entire day had to call a coworker for a hand smh
@@bltsandwich567yah these guys in the video clearly use a lift lol. I'm like no way they are getting it done so easily without one.
Yea we just paid that much but like to do it in the future next time. The cost is a paycheck
Very clear and well documented process, thank you.
So show that you have to jack the Car up to work on it, then proceed to complete the repair on a lift....
I can't even get it back in bc the cords have no wiggle room. I feel bad for mechanics, bc this type of work is trash.
This video provided almost no useful information for this job, literally no more helpful than a quick audio narration. No bolt sizes, tips for removing any of the connectors.
hahaha... remove a section of exhaust pipe to change the starter! No problem... in California or Arizona maybe! Rust ffs RUST! Everyone outside of Cali and AZ, do yourselves a favor and go top down.. yes remove the intake manifold! Once the intake is clear the starter is completely accessible! Don't even need to lay down under the car or frig around with jacks and stands!
That’s exactly what I did. This video is terrible
“Frig around with jacks and stands” That made me lol, reminded me of Randy from TPB. Anyway thanks for the tip
@@behar the 1.6 might have to access like in the vid
@@JaseCJaySo your talking about the 1.8 able to access top down right?
@@behar the 2.4l for sure
You have to remove the exhaust to get to it……
Excellent how to video!
The passenger side axle is in the way, not exhaust pipe. For me it was easier to pull the axle rather than fighting with rusted exhaust flange nuts and bolts ( I live in NJ). Gave me so much more hand room. No matter what, that starter is in a really tight spot
I just did this job 2 extremely helpful hints
Remove the two exhaust bolts with the springs
Make the pipe movable
Remove the drive axle then this job is a breeze should take less than 2 hrs
I'm doing this job right now and the axle makes it so hard to maneuver tools and hands. Removing the upper bolt on the starter is where I'm stuck at the moment .
@@qandmargo what length extension did use use for the upper bolt?
Only thing that would have made this video better would be including the sizes of the fasteners
You call this a number manual and yet you skip all the details....pftt! No good!
Is it the same process for cng vehicle ?
My 2012 cng is doing this to me too. In fact, I'm stranded at the moment and hoping it starts once it cools down. There's a different video where the guy unbolt the intake manifold and bungies it out of the way and easily accesses from the top. Likely have to go below for the bottom bolt, no matter what.
This was very clear, well photographed and narrated. The instructions were 100% accurate. Even the clear view of the swivel socket and extension through the right wheel well was spot on, the only way you will get to that top starter bolt for sure, since there is no room to move a ratchet between the starter and the bulkhead. Thank you for taking the time to do this!
Actually helpful. Best video i have watched yet.
What a great vid!
It’s better to uninstall the lower bolt then upper bolt
This video was spot on.
What’s the difference in the process for a cng vehicle
Just did this and now my power steering light, and VSA system light is on, anyone run into this ?
Sounds like you may have unplugged those wires, or plugged them in, but not securely. Has to be wire related unless you did a axle removal on yours.
Id like this video even more if there was a parts list with it...
The manufacturers should provide parts diagrams more easily for all of their cars
