ALMOST THERE: Tesla FSD 12.3 REVELATIONS

  • After months of waiting, I finally got to test drive Tesla's FSD Beta v12.3--and it's a stunning step change in the way that Tesla handles autonomous driving! But there are still some significant issues to fix. The big question is: is the the "Holy Grail" architecture that will allow these issues to be addressed rapidly with more data and compute, or will there still be bottlenecks in the architecture that could keep Tesla from achieving full autonomy soon.

I got FSD 12.3 today. My experience with AUTO speed limit was VERY good. At the traffic light, FSD started very confident driving up to 45 mph (the posted speed limit). After 10 sec or so, other cars started to catch-up driving over the speed limit. FSD started increasing the max speed matching the traffic around me. At 58mph, stopped accelerating, put the turn-signal, and switched to the right lane allowing the faster traffic to pass. This was a very human like behaviour.

90% of my interventions with 12.3 are pressing on the accelerator and adjusting some lane choices. Great progress. Very few things to iron out can't wait to see the progress now. I'm happy it doesn't have road rage, seems to be paying attention and acting correctly most of the time. I just wish we could get rid of the nag unless it's system critical. It's funny to hear different people saying how the v12.3 is to fast, too slow, to quick on acceleration after turns, to slow on acceleration... Tesla would have to step up efforts in customizability of the driving profile, I guess, otherwise there will be always somebody irritated by the way the car drives.
I see you are on the "faster" side of the spectrum. The roads you have there are pretty beaten so I'd probably not drive much faster than FSD with the suspension Model 3/Y has... 😋

My community gate looks exactly the same as the one at the beginning of your video. FSD has never stopped for these gates. Without intervention, the car would drive right into the gates. Unfortunately, V12.3 behaves exactly the same way.
Edit: Also, while v12.3 drives more smoothly than any prior version, I find it making lane mistakes in places that used to always be perfect. It will frequently move into a left-turn-only lane when navigation calls for continuing straight ahead.

I have found that if you give it some accelerator when its going below the speed limit it will stay at the speed you push it up to. It resets pretty often, but generally has the same affect as using the wheel to adjust the max speed up.

    • @Reazintful
      @Reazintful หลายเดือนก่อน

this didnt work for me at all, had issues with it on 3 seperate occasions, the scroll wheel didnt seem to effect it in anyway, and pushing on the accelerator didnt either, once i release it, it just slowed down again. tried disengaging and re engaging and it still slowed down, this was on a 55 mph 3 lane road, no neighborhoods or schools, it wanted to go 40 mph, no matter what, so i reported it, traffic was passing me like i was a grandma. there are def some issues with the auto speed offset...it did seem to work well for road construction, bad bumpy roads and neighborhood roads really well. but its decision seemed inconsistent on roads with speed limits of 45-55.

Just got back from a morning of driving 12.3. A lot went right. Great new version. Here is the bad:
It turned right on red without barely slowing down. It was the only right on red situation I encountered this morning.
I was in the right of a 2 lanes east bound. A UPS truck decided to pass me - fine, but my car started to pull into the lane to block the truck? I aborted.
Leaving the median to cross on bound traffic after the last vehicle, it almost clipped the tail end of a semi that was the last vehicle it was waiting for before crossing.
When it sees a route sign “Ahead 15” ( just a route sign with “ahead” perched on top) it sets the speed limit to 15 (in a 35 zone). Did this repeatably.

I know everyone is saying highway stack is still the v11 because of the auto Max … but as you use the system more can you watch out for that?
In my experience, the highway behavior is still a bit subtly different.. for example for my usual route v12 is making some of the tight exits that v11 used to consistently miss. Also the robotic position maintenance within the highway lanes seems to have gone down.
Only 3 days of very sparse driving so I’m not sure if I’m just imagining this so I’d be curious about your experience

Driving 5 mph under in a 30 mph zone is not desirable, and he wasn't criticizing it stopping at stop signs, just not being assertive enough when proceeding after the stop. For the masses to want to utilize the technology more broadly, FSD needs to transition from being your typical lady driver into driving like a man (and with the accident rates of a robot).

    • @allieflounder5764

This was really an insufferable video. The constant complaining about not tailgating, not driving aggressively...not breaking the law. Complaining about keeping a safe distance on the highways is epic. It's scary that FSD is available to certain people. Expecting the car to choose the lane with the fewest cars to save 2 seconds? Really? After hearing the final comments it's clear that John doesn't understand what FSD is even for. The car is supposed to not drive like an a.h. actually the fastest we can get this out there and the more aggressive drivers we can get off the road the better. (Edit) ...I am going to have to go back on some of my criticisms here, 12 is too slow and needs to respect the drivers offset. It should only drive under the limit if that's what the operator chooses, so John is correct in this regard. I stand by the rest though.

Slowing for speed bumps, that passes the wife test! The actual driving aspect works so much better than 11.x. It seems that my Model Y now has REALLY bad routing under 12.3, taking me down weird side roads, avoiding "phantom" traffic jams and other weird route selection cases.
Perhaps the AI is too busy looking at cameras to get latest traffic data.

I was most interested in something new on the display. Brief artifacts of obstructions/cars on numerous occasions that disappeared quickly. They nearly always showed up briefly after a full stop and resume. Your car did not seem to react to any of these. I wonder what is going on with the predictive algorithms to show this.
Nearly all of these obstructions seem to be pure phantoms.
But so cool to see how different 12.3.x is going to be. The release 'major, minor, minor' adoption tells us that updates will be more frequent and less in need of regression testing.

12.3 does great, except I have 3 roads in 3 miles of my house that don’t exist and I have to take over to get to my destination.
1 - it plans onto a private road that is closed off, and has been for a long time
2 - a good road exists and is the shortest path, it plans for another route that ends in a ditch.
3 - from the Quartzsite Supercharger going back to I10 it takes a right into a store instead of taking a left for the road to the Interstate.
I don’t know how to report these mapping errors beside voice error when you take it out of FSD. It’s a mapping error, that I’ve experienced and reported for over a year and a half.

Try this scenario ina rural (non-traffic area) without autospeed turned on:
Turn on FSD 12.3 in a 55MPH zone. Use knob on wheel to dial top speed to 60 MPH. Note that the car doesn't go near 60 most of the time... it is overriding your setting.... just like the Dr saw at slower speed.
Note keep FSD on until you get to a reduced speed zone (maybe a 45 mph zone?)..... did your car slow down to your offset top speed or is it going faster than it should?
The above scenario will result in your getting a ticket so be cautious and ready to take over and brake when you get to a reduced speed zone.
    Theory:
Ego is keying off cars around it. I live in a rural area. When there are no cars around ego doesn't know how far to go and doesn't seem to reference your offset speed.

Congrats on getting the FSD12.3 update. Definitely an improved performance design architecture for physical world AI performance interaction in much more than the self driving marketplace 🎉
Some FSD observations I have been tracking over the last 4 or more beta releases.
On FSD 12.1 drives between San Diego CA and Los Angeles near Santa Monica what is displayed on the touch screen was significantly wrong enough that I needed to run Google Maps in parallel to insure I was going to reach the target destination. FSD 12 series probably needs an incentive to update the visual mapping information at a rate compatible with the human driver since I was not getting milage updates for upcoming driving decisions.
Though the car remembers the previous parked cars on my driveway when I back out of my garage there are no new display objects generated for things like trash cans that are only visible to the backup camera. Of concern is that only depending on the display visualization backup results in a false sense of security that the reverse path is clear of both objects and people when you would expect a collision warning or action like you would normally get during forward car motion.
Seems like summon still has a backup incline limit where it stops moving on my driveway but if I back my car onto the driveway where backup still works and initiate a FSD drive to my local store the car starts driving and successfully passes the summon backup limit, scared me enough to slam on the brakes so I really don't recommend testing this issue for anyone else that I found in the late FSD 11 releases but it will be important for summon and reverse summon going forward.
Hope Tesla will add rear wheel steering to all their car product lines which would be much more effective and useful than tank turning 😊

One other thing is that after an overnight charging session the car fairly often does not recognize my valid phone key to open the car driver door and requests a card key to unlock the door then requests the card key again to start driving. In both cases I can use the phone app to manually unlock the doors and enable the car to drive, probably thru wireless connectivity. Seems like the car should always check for a valid Bluetooth key even if the phone app is already wireless connected to the car.😢

Had to disengage FSD forcibly, immediately after(also sent voice feedback), pulled over, less than 200mtrs after getting low pressure tire warning. Really bad damage to the side wall! Lesson learned🥺. Definitely seems to be an issue with the new version update (yesterday). There was no emergency situation, it was a plain and simple yet another left turn in broad mid noon daylight. Hope tesla could reimburse for the damage🤞 (will update, if they ownup and resolve the issue).

The auto speed adjustment really doesn’t matter too much if you don’t have cars around you for it to gauge off of. In my car, if there is a car coming up on me fast, my car will make the appropriate adjustments to its speed to accommodate or match the flow of traffic around it. Although not ideal, I’ve even seen my car go 10mph over the posted speed limit. V12.3 still doesn’t recognize School Zones, so if you are the lead car and are about to go through one, you’ll need to disengage or else you might get a ticket. lol.

I know in CA if the speed limit sign just says speed limit then you do have a defense for going faster under the basic speed law. ie you can make an argument that conditions were such that traveling over the speed limit was safe. If the sigh says maximum speed limit then yes you have no defense even f you are caught for only going 1 MPH faster than the posted maximum speed limit.

My experience has been very much like yours.Very irritating with the going 5 or 6.Under the speed limit, it should do at least the speed limit.Yeah unless there was rain or snow or something but on a clear sunny day it should do the speed limit minimum. I found with turning the auto max off. It still goes under the speed limit. It doesn't seem to change the behavior so there's that. My other complaint is just how slow it approaches.Stop signs. The good is, it definitely is not timid? When another car is approaching the stop sign at the same time. And I stop just a second before him. The car go's version 11. Would have just sat there and waited for them to go. Great review
