Tesla FSD 12.3 vs JOHN'S LEFT TURN--Who Wins?!

  • I have a nasty unprotected left turn near my house that challenges Tesla's FSD to the max. How does the new Full Self Driving Beta 12.3 stack up against it? Let's call it a "technical" win, but a pyrrhic one at best. ;)
    It's not quite Chuck Cook's Left, but it's certainly not easy! To the Tesla team, I put the address for the turn in my video. I suggest you all come have a look and see how your test fleet stacks up against it!

    Strange, MY on FSD 12.3 seems to be “learning” each drive. Each time I take it over the same route, it seems to do better at selecting the right point in a complicated turning bay. Showing less hesitation.
    Can FSD self-learn or is it 100% pre-trained model & I’m imagining things?

    If the car cameras have a second imaging sensor slightly offset from the original sensor which was optimized to generate object distance measurement info you could reduce the calculation time to identify moving objects of interest that affect the desired travel path. Basically stereo vision from a single lens system should work better than aligning and calibrating 2 seperately mounted cameras.

      I’m not so sure, I’m British so we don’t have so many unprotected turns onto multi lane roads, but if I was doing that turn, I would definitely not turn left into the left lane when there is a car approaching in the right lane, just feels way too risky. If you did that here, the person on the main road would not be happy! But I suppose it’s something you almost have to do in the US because there are so many multi-lane roads.

    Sorry Doc, I know I was not in the car, but I thought it was a 100% PASS for all of those tries. It did all of them safely and did not brake the law. That should be the criteria to judge at this beginning stage of training. Did it complete safely and did it brake the law? It's impossible to make everyone 100% comfortable with every drive. At this point it's learning to complete safely and not break the law.

    Latest news ( copied from CNBC ) about TESLA auto pilot: Federal authorities say a “critical safety gap” in Tesla’s Autopilot system contributed to at least 467 collisions, 13 resulting in fatalities.
    The findings come from a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration analysis of 956 crashes in which Tesla Autopilot was thought to have been in use.
    Tesla’s Autopilot design has “led to foreseeable misuse and avoidable crashes,” the NHTSA report said.

    v12.1 was very good at committing, and it was willing to go into small gaps too. But sometimes it was a too much, so Tesla dialed it back with v12.2 and again with v12.3. You may well be right. To me, it shows the challenge FSD faces is that it will be difficult to please everyone. Watching a lot of other TH-cam FSD reviews, some complain it is slow, others that it is too fast ( in the same FSD version). FSD will need to find a middle road, and then allow users to fine tune to their liking.

      @@Big_Ben_from_La_Mesa My basis for the claim is that the field of view for the Tesla camera system is lesser than a human and you can see the results of this by its inching up behavior (a very unhuman inching up behavior). We can move our head, body, and hips around (giving us a greater field of view). This is not an opinion - a human driver has a greater potential field of view facing forward and to the sides than the Tesla camera system. It's a simple fact. We also have greater depth perception than the cameras do based on the placement of the cameras and the nature of each camera.

    • @singed8853
      @singed8853 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@kafiluz4317 The inching up behavior is very inhuman and it accomplishes only one thing for the system - gaining additional field of view of the road. This tells you that without that inching it isn't seeing in a sufficient way. But you will also know this if you look at what the cameras can actually see - their field of view is more limited than a human driver, and the inching up behavior is unavoidable because of it.

      I think FSD is doing a good job. If many people are going faster in any particular driving area, the speed limit should be legally increased. If not, maybe FSD should not be used in such areas. IMO, FSD is not the problem or the answer, it's how people unpredictably behave.

      @@Mrewink5 👍 Having said that, I have driven 12.3 and it totally ignores what I have set as the speed limit and does what it wants. Under Autopilot settings all the speed offsets are greyed out. It is all or nothing....FSD decides how fast to go and only bases it's behavior on the Chill, Standard, or Assertive setting. None of which go over the speed limit (the signage limit, not what I set).
      This would work when all other cars also have FSD and drive at the speed limit. Unfortunately what it does now is PO the drivers that come up on my car's tail end as it meanders at 52 (or less when it sees any cones or such) in a 55 mph zone where everyone is going 60 or more. Turning on the setting to let FSD choose its own speed doesn't change the behavior. I think that setting must be in all the time under the covers given its behavior.

That was fine when I could override the speed. But now FSD wants to ignore my override and goes closer to 45 than 55 when I spin the dial up on the wheel to try and up the speed. Frustrating.
