It's so amazing how a car this old can look like gold even today. With the right care and taste, these Mustang's have the perfect flare of mean, and beautiful at the same time. Love the S197.
+2NDSIDE except the back!!! LOL Did they get an old timer from Buick to design the rear??? Do you pull up to stoplights, next to older mustangs.............and they just give you that "fuck you........your shit is so much cooler than mine" look??
Daily drive a 2006. I thought the antenna would be weird. Not having 1 for a decade... it isn't... you dont see it with the visibility from the windshield. And the stock shaker unit has terrible reception.
My TR3650 did the exact same thing for over a year until I added a CHE performance k-member brace with torque limiters. It's not him. It's the remote shifter tied to motor and trans mounts that were never meant to see that much power. If you have a S197 with a blower or tons of bolt ons and it suffers 2nd and 3rd gear high rpm lock out, look into the k-member brace with torque limiters. Fixed my problem.
Matt. I Started watching your videos one helluva long time ago. The renntech E class you drove was my inspiration for an all NA E550 build that I have been rocking for the past few years. Needless to say, it got boring. 4matic AWD is no fun so I actually sold the car and all the hours of tuning and tweaking went with it to a young gentleman who absolutely loved that straight piped monster. I got more than I paid for the car which never happens. Watching the one take videos I stumbled on this one, did a marketplace search and now am the proud owner of a Roush 427r with about 10 grand worth of VMP performance power adders already installed on the car. I know you love your Fox body mustangs, but seriously.... you need to get doing more and more of these videos if you can. Even the old ones can be inspiration for someones next build. Always loved these one takes always will.
That 3 valve motor is a still a good motor and can make a lot of power. If i were this guy though i'd come down to a 3:73 gear. That's really the best of both worlds. Makes it very drivable but you also can shit and git' pretty good too.
+Zach Huneycutt I agree 100%, I have a similar set up, just a procharger instead of Paxton. and with the centri S/Cs you get more power up top, and I really feel like Im shifting before I am taking full advantage of the top end power if that makes sense.
I have almost the same setup, but a vortech H.O. at 12 psi. It's hard to hook up with 3.31s, but I'm going to go to 3.73s due to the lack of low rpm torque with the centri. 4.10s would be way overkill imo, unless you are drag racing running DRs.
480HP is perfect for me. I don't own a car with that much HP, but have drove one with similar HP (bolt on 5G Camaro SS) it's sketchy but controllable. Very beautiful and tastefully modded S197.
Factory Mustang GT's in this year range, came with 3.31 (not 3.23) with the V6 and the GT auto. The GT stick version had 3.55 from the factory. Just for clarification.
I have GT 2005 with Comp cams a pro charger 28 up grades in all 5 speed 355 rears I love it it's putting 500 to the wheel and 489 TQ great video and car James
Great job with this car. I hope you keep it forever! IMO. After the 67’ style this is the best looking mustang (05-09). Obviously hats off to the Fox Bodies as well). But agree after 2015 they seemed to run out of ideas to make it better looking. That’s understandable I guess.
Hi Matt. I love your videos and have watched every one over the last few years. I just want to say thank you for showing the engine bay on this monster. Looking at engine bays is half the fun for me :) Thank you! Can't wait for another update on your fox! Cheers from Australia. Michael

Great car. For comparisons sake, a Boss 302 Roadrunner motor with just Cobra Jet intake, throttle body and CAI with stock cams will generally make 490whp/396wtrq and redline at 8k RPM. Crazy how far we have come! Cheers
My god the noises are amazing. I'm really not a muscle car dude, but you cannot argue with the power per $ factor of most of the 'Murican V8's. Maybe I'll take the dip on the next one! I need some of that V8 noise in my life.... Great review as usual Matt!
+T-WRX Seriously. You could probably build a car almost like this for about $10-15k on the low-end. It's insane the amount of speed per dollar you get when you buy 'merican .

I miss mine, bought new in '05. Sounded great with the SLP loudmouth, just did tune and all the normal bolt ons. The more of these videos of the S197s I watch the more I want another, dime a dozen nowadays too...might be time....and being that they're a dime a dozen i might just have some $$$ for a supercharger. Hmmm lol
@@benjaminjohnson3590 If I had one of these 'stangs I couldn't sell it unless I really needed the money lol. It's actually kinda hard to find the S197s for sale in my state and my neighboring states. Most of the used Mustangs for sale are the 6th generation type and I don't care for those 😭 I hope Ford goes back to making their Mustangs with their retro-y style again
I really wish I hadn't but it was sold out of necessity....growing family and all that. I love the S197s as well, imo the best looking 'recent' mustang. Keep looking, one will turn up....or take a road trip. It'll be a nice drive home! 😁
I have seen people say that he has one on his list of car reviews ,because I posted the same thing couple weeks ago and and thesmokingtire just replied with a smiley face.
480 whp is a lot in 2020, most people watching these videos will NEVER experience this kind of power. This car is good for 550 hp at the crank how many cars in 2020 have this from the factory while weighing under 3800 lbs? Not many.
I have a similar set up, but a procharger instead of Paxton. It makes a pulsing blow off noise instead of just a whoosh, if that makes any sense. I thoroughly enjoy it.
Definitely a great idea going with more aggressive 4.10 gearing when using a centrifugal supercharger, as they don't make their full power until you're in the higher rpm's. Those gears help to make up some of that low rpm power the s/c isn't really generating yet. On the Mustang Forums, I've consistently heard that the "safe" power limit of the stock 3v 4.6 is roughly 450 HP @ the wheels, (give or take). There are plenty of stock 3v's putting down over 500 RWHP, but you're more at risk of blowing something with the stock bottom end. 480 RWHP should be fine. Nice numbers by the way! That's about 100 HP @ the wheels (on average), more than the 4v Mustang 5.0's are putting down bone stock. I'd love to see this GT run the 1/4 mile :)
My last Mustang GT was a black 2006 GT with a Vortech SC, stock 3:55's, everything including the base blower the car on street tires went 12.1@115 back in 2007, I miss that car big time. 4.10 gears with a blower, doesn't make sense, he'd actually go faster with 3:55 or 3:31's.
In a quarter mile?? That’s bullshit. It would go faster in the top end but that same car with 3:55s or 3:31s would absolutely NOT be faster than the 4:10s in a quarter mile. Putting 4:10s in a car with a blower on it makes just as much sense as putting 4:10s in a car without a blower.

This model Mustang looks better than any after it. Clean design.
480 RWHP And he said that matches a coyote ? WTF? A Stock coyote is making 480 RWHP??? Even a full bolt on 5.0 wound't smoke a 4.6 supercharged.Add cams to that 4.6 and further proves the point,Dont forget you can buy a 4.6 for 10,000-12,000 while a 5.0 still ranges from high 18,000 to low 20,000
I'm not sure if it's just the camera angle but these 4.10s are perfect for the canyon. This looks faster than the videos of the modern mustangs matt drives. Way faster. Almost supercar fast.
2800 @ 65? Wtf. I had 4.10s in my 08 and at 70 i was at like 2300 or so with a calibrated speedo. Same with my mach 1 that i had since the t-3650 uses the same overdrive ratio after 2001.
This era of mustangs can handle 500 hp to 600 hp easy with suspension upgrades. Suspension upgrades easily solve the problem of the chassis being overpowered.
I'm not sure if this is because it's a centrifugal SC or what, but is it supposed to be always making boost like that? I know it will need be vented to atmosphere like that if you have an open inlet in the super charger and are using the TB on the engine. Having the SC open is usually used for race applications, no?
Hey Matt, Wanna drive another Matt's Roush 427r. I got a spicy one that is the perfect combination of power and grip for the street.... I bought my first E Class because of the Weistec E class you showcased on a previous smoking tire episode. I was always a C class or Truck guy before. First time I drove a way older mustang, I tossed the luxury sports cars to the curb. Cant beat a dead horse but you can definitely beat a living one for quite some time...
Awesome job with these one takes keep it up! There really aren't any other, channels doing content like this, the passion that every guest has for their really is apparent. Also I feel like an idiot, but, does anyone know what the heck the email address is for the podcast?
My 2v 00' GT mustang has the same kinda setup with the same kinda blow off. I love it personally. If you drive normally (under 2.5k RPM) its not that bad. The reason it seems loud in the video is because hes holding the RPMS. I personally love holding the rpms up to about 4k with the blowing off and then stepping on it, beacause it sounds like a monster sucking in a great gulp of air and then when it stops, you get propelled forwards like a cannonball. So much drama its amazing!
Matt you are wrong on the S197 rear axle ratios the GTs came with 3.55 up to 2008 which then dropped to 3.31. The 8.8" size rear is a very strong axled rear which was still used in the 13 and 14 Shelby GT500s.
I think the brakes on the gt500 matt drove wasn't set up with high temp brake fluid. I think there is a note in the owners manual to change the brake fluid for track use...or i believe there was.
Loved this review! Definitely a unique 'Stang. Would certainly be entertaining to see Thatdudeinblue's Mustang get reviewed, but then again I suppose it's simply just not "different" enough anyways
If theres one thing I like about manual big engine cars , its the long first/second gear . Makes it so much more comfortable to drive and launch the car (especially if you wish to overtake someone from a standstill). And of course the nice quiet cruising with only the engine burbling and massaging your eardrums and a+s with its vibes. I just dont see these mods. Unless you have a race car, I think its one of the worst things you can do for comfort and driveability to reduce gear ratios, especially in a car like this...
It's so amazing how a car this old can look like gold even today. With the right care and taste, these Mustang's have the perfect flare of mean, and beautiful at the same time. Love the S197.

Why this mustang looks better than the new ones!
this car needs a shorty antenna. ..call me crazy but watching that antenna bounce around with the wind is driving me nuts

Definitely a great idea going with more aggressive 4.10 gearing when using a centrifugal supercharger, as they don't make their full power until you're in the higher rpm's. Matt, great video. Fun car. I love your appreciation for things that are different. Let's see an S2K. Big following. Would pull a lot of views.
Even a full bolt on 5.0 wound't smoke a 4.6 supercharged.Add cams to that 4.6 and further proves the point,Dont forget you can buy a 4.6 for 10,000-12,000 while a 5.0 still ranges from high 18,000 to low 20,000
the coyote makes 440 at the crank we dyno them at least 4 times a week thats what we do we own a dyno shop
Doug Palmer jn
Still far from my point, A coyote makes what 390-400 to the wheels ? I was just saying a supercharged 3v smokes it.
How much you wanna bet any day our 2014 with simple bolt on parts has smoked many boy that thought the 4.6 pos was somthing its just junk

*Dude is Smiling like* *"Don't fuck up my Shit"*
The stance in the thumbnail... Damnnnnn sonnnnnnn
this car is sick! That blow off valve! The gearing is a bit too short for my taste though.
3.55 one these cars
MAX !
Wow. I have never heard such a blower before. Does that static noise get old after 30 minutes? Cool anyway.
I love your car man, it's amazing..
Unless you have a race car, I think its one of the worst things you can do for comfort and driveability to reduce gear ratios, especially in a car like this...
hey Matt, any other GTIs in the near future?
+Ryan Flannery yesterday
what rims are these?
