  • Who's ready for a Mobile Suit Gundam review? Yup, in our second installment of The One Year War review series, we're having a look at the show that started it all. Debuting in 1979, Gundam is a series that changed the mecha landscape forever, becoming easily one of the most popular (if not the most) mecha series ever. This is where the stories of Amuro Ray and Char Aznable begin!

    Yesterday, I finished watching the original 1979 series (subbed). Despite the animation being dated by today's standards, it still has this fond nostalgic charm to it. The opening theme song “Tobe! Gundam” is really stuck in my head. The flow of the series didn't always feel smooth. It took me a while to get into the groove. As soon as I made it to episode 10, I started getting really invested into the story and the characters. The nuances the series has are things a lot of modern day series and movies lack these days in my opinion. Despite the shortcomings in production quality and the weird introduction of Newtypes, It's clear as to why this memorable series was written by the stuff of legend. Despite the occasional production issues and a few hiccups the overall flow of the story had at times, I give the 1979 TV series a very solid 8 out of 10. I’m sure that if the original Mobile Suit Gundam had gotten a full 52 episodes instead of only 42 (minus the original 15th episode), things could’ve been fleshed out more and the series would’ve gotten at least a 9 out of 10.
    Yesterday, I just started watching Zeta Gundam and I'm already 6 episodes in. What I can say is that I already got into the groove right from the very first minute of episode 1. I'm already confident that after I finish watching Zeta Gundam that I’ll be giving this series a score higher than an 8.

    I finally finished this series about 2 weeks ago and I’m glad I did. Even with its shortcomings in production quality, you can still see the effort and care put in. For example, notice how as the series goes on, the Zaku gets seen less while you see more Doms and Gelgoogs. Granted, that could be written off as promoting the newest toys, but I’d argue it’s showing the progression of arms in the war. Zeon makes Zaku, the Federation makes the Gundam, then we get the Gouf, then GMs, and so on. I’m currently on episode 9 of Stardust Memory so I’m enjoying my time going through UC Gundam.
    Note: You are correct that the show never (or rarely) says Bright’s age. The only reason I knew he was 19 was because I read the Origin Manga.

      I think I saw an interview that the animation director was hospitalized for quite a while in the midst of the series. He even said watching the series being aired in the hospital bed made him cringe.

    • @lukejohnson3715
      @lukejohnson3715 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EffendiChung that is correct. Later on, when making the compilation films, he came back and oversaw a lot of new animation for the third film.

    *spoilers ahead* When it comes down to Amuro and Lalah's relationship coming up to fast, I think that was slightly intentional. Yes the original got cut due to budget and popularity, (gunpla really saved this franchise) but in a way, Tomino's usage of Newtype could be seen as a cheat code in a more positive side in literary terms. When newtypes have a mind meld of sorts, they tend to reveal a lot about each other in a short amount of time, but rather than take this side of understanding and stop fighting, oldtypes take full advantage of newtypes and try using them more as weapons further adding tragedy to them since newtypes tend to have freakouts when a mass amount of people die or if a connection with another newtype dies. In Zeta, Mirai even talks with Kamille about how quick Amuro and Lalah's relationship was but also how scarring it left him.

    • @Kodiie
      @Kodiie ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see what you mean however complete understanding does not then mean both parties automatically agree with one another. This includes new-types, which often don’t require the prodding of old types (Paptimus Scirocco is one example). This series and Later entries into Gundam demonstrate this fully. A world of universal mutual understanding does not mean a world of peace.

    • @Birdhouseart
      @Birdhouseart ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Secular Sage Yeah I shouldn't have lumped "only oldtypes" are the main cause since Scirocco, Haman and plenty other notable newtypes while having complete understanding did not come full agreement. This why I like this good description of Newtypes from F91, "they're the most miserable lot of individuals you could ever imagine. "

    • @Kodiie
      @Kodiie ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Birdhouseart I like that description too.
      The whole idea of New types to me seems like a failed idea in resolving the problems with war. Sure people can understand each other, but it does not address personal ambition, trauma of the individual or group, the material needs of the individual or group (etc.) that create the fertile ground for war. In the case of Amuro and Char, what if they come to a complete understanding of one another but hate each other more because of it? This scenario imo would be far more common and lead to more instability. As humans I don’t believe we are equipped to gaze into the souls of our fellow man.

  • @AzraelThanatos

    One thing that you could have done is to split the series up using the movie version of the original series, expanded from the original as needed. It would make for at least three videos.
    Just don't worry about the various versions of the universe such as the novels and manga where the original RX-78-2 was destroyed part of the way through and the RX-78-3 took its place for the rest

    If they were to re-animated the entire original series of Gundam, meaning every bit, maybe adding where there needs to be due to the cuts from the original the toy line being what saved the entire franchie, It would be in the top 3 if not number-1 watched show. It's as timeless as it gets. All the characters are great; Fed, Zeon or just civilians for an episode feel very fleshed out.
    I'll say Char is less an antagonist and more of a thwart or Rival to Amuro. To show how he grows as a pilot. In the beginning barely able to take him on alone, but near the end - well, there's a reason in Zeonic front it becomes a survival horror when you hear he's in the area, picking off squads like it was nothing. If he was given the MKII in Zeta, he would have been unstoppable. A literally killing machine. The most frightening thing about his innate piloting skill. He was only doing so, for one year.

    I saw the compilation films (which are on Netflix for convenience) which while the time gap to that and Char's rebellion is a bit off putting, it is more smooth, especially if you watch Unicorn mini series (the episodes are almost an hour long, hence me calling it a mini series) and the Hathaway movie after. The compilation puts more emphasis on newtype connections so the near instant relationship is a bit more palpable than what was shown in the show.

    I have to admit the Newtype stuff behind some of the romances (Looking at you Star Dust Memory) is kinda my least favorite aspect of the UC timeline, I feel like it's responsible for maybe a few too many contrivances for my personal liking, plus especially in Unicorn becomes too space magic for my taste.
