A note on the designs for the Mobile Fighters, when the director was presented with initial designs for Shining Gundam he died a little on the inside seeing how the mecha designers were dragged to make heavily gimmick-ed, nationality-based mobile suits. Yes, Imagawa wasn't originally on board with the idea, it was all Bandai's idea who took over around midway the production of Victory Gundam. The fun part of the story, is that instead of doing it reluctantly, Imagawa and his crew, already bitter about Bandai screwing over their old friend and Tomino with Victory (he ended up with a serious case of depression), decided to one-up Bandai with the ridiculous and nigh-impossible designs for the time, case in point: Master Gundam was given the wing-cape and unusual design to screw with the engineers at Bandai, this line of thinking was carried over to EVERY GODDAMN DESIGN in the show (Ashura and Skull Gundam were made by audience members, so that was a bonus). One big "FUCK YOU BANDAI, try to make gunpla kits out of this" for their corpo greed and stupidity
This is also one big driving motivator for Imagawa to make the show to his liking and make "the best Gundam show he could make" with the asinine ideas that Bandai pushed to him, and it is kinda why G Gundam is the hyper-adrenaline super robo ride that it is, and it is also one of the many reasons why I love it, its mere existence is a big middle finger to Bandai and a case of making the best outcome out of the worst set-up possible. It is a work of both love and spite and the results are glorious

G Gundam is the perfect example of how execution and meaning at heart matters more than a franchise's cliché and core concepts. When you screw with the core component of a series for the sake of screwing with it and 'being different' you more often than not get a failure. G Gundam, however, took one of the worst possible concepts one could apply to Gundam up to that point and executed this utterly ridiculous concept with such earnest passion that it completely overcome what a dumb show unlike everything else in the franchise it is conceptually.

and tbh, G Gundam is still a gundam at core , as in focus on how communication (and propaganda) or the lack of it can lead to war and somehow when ppl will to understand enough other can lead to peace(the ending of Char's counterattack, Gundam 00). In the end, Doman save the world not just by punching, but makes friends and comades and confessing his love, something that he can never do in the start of the show. (and the awesome golden fist ofc).

The current pilot of Windmill Gundam had his Gundam hide in a field for the 11 month preliminaries AS A WINDMILL so nobody knew where he was to challenge. When Windmill Gundam showed up at the finals it lost every fight it was in but still placed 12th.
A person who literally never once used their gundam until the finals, and spent all his time fucking around placed better than Gundam Pilots who have trained their entire lives for it. XD

    @SeruraRenge11 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I think anyone that dismisses G for the super robot aspect either didn't watch G, or watched it and had a completely superficial understanding of the show and saw nothing beyond its Super Robot trappings because there has been no Gundam before or since (except maybe Build Fighters) that is like it. It's extremely well-written under the surface with a fully realized world and every major character has understandable, realistic goals and personalities. It took the monster of the week format, something that often is derided for its episodic nature, and used it entirely to the show's benefit. It helped G immensely during the first half as it allowed you to see how each earth nation is handling the state the planet is in, the governments of those nations, the personality and ideology of that country's Gundam Fighter, and finally Domon's fight against them. Even Master Asia has a completely believable motivation behind his actions and it's understandable how he became the antagonist. I would recommend looking up and reading the G-Files, the interviews/mini Q&As the director had for every episode where he goes into detail little tidbits about why the episode was the way it was. The show was very well-planned out.
And it all happened because the director Imagawa was put in charge of the show and said "nah I'm gonna do whatever the fuck I want" and the writers all agreed with him, instead of being beholden to Sunrise and Bandai's demands. Which is the opposite of what they thought he'd do because they put him in that position specifically because they thought he'd be a yes-man that'd make the show they wanted. The only thing he kept was the Gundam Fight concept.

I've watched a lot of the other Gundam videos on this channel, and I've noticed something. G Gundam (maybe unintentionally) side-steps one of the biggest problems with the franchise. The franchise has always been anti-war, but the robot fights are cool; it's what draws people in. G Gundam doesn't have a real war, and its emphasis on Martial Arts offers an idea the franchise has always lacked. Fighting isn't inherently bad. Violence and destruction are bad, but the martial Arts are about personal growth, and that growth can even lead one to helping others grow as well. Just a thought.

Much like how alike was able to achieve the legendary super saiyan mode through the rage of the loss of akrillin and then later refine it through not just emotion, but more mental clarity, Domon does the same with the super mode by not allowing his anger to fuel his actions and allow mental clarity to lead his actions.

Just finished it up after GundamInfo added it to their lineup. (That makes my complete repertoire to be 00, IBO, Seed, Unicorn, the 0079 summary movies, G, and the Build entries. I completely dropped Destiny and Wing after about 30% and 15% completion respectively.)
G was a series I knew more by reputation than anything. I've always heard it described as mouth-breathingly stupid, but still fun. Honestly, it's not _stupid_ at all. Based on the discourse surrounding it, you'd think that it's all goofy pseudo-martial-arts superpower shenanigans as far as the eye can see, and while that certainly _is_ a significant component of G, that only makes it weird, a subjective measure, whereas stupid is objectively quantifiable. If you want a _stupid_ series, look to Seed, with its paint-by-numbers beat-for-beat I-can't-believe-it's-not-remake copycat of the UC without things like substance or meaning or any character behaving logically. G Gundam succeeds by doing basically the exact opposite: actually having plenty of substance of its own, completely disregarding any baggage of what Gundam as a franchise is _supposed_ to be, and _that's_ why I love it. After just a single watch, I know all the Shuffle Alliance members' full names, and I'm _terrible_ at names. I don't think I could accurately give you a _count_ of how many doofus friends Kira Yamato had, let alone name them. (There's Sai, Flay, and then I lose interest. Just like the writers. Ba-dum-tish.)
Your example of the Tequila Gundam episode was like many episodes of the series. In particular, I think of the Lumber Gundam episode and the past between Argo and Andrew Graham. Or the episode where we learn how Chibodee met his cheerleaders. Or Master Asia and Domon escaping from a Gundam head through the ruins of Hong Kong. Or Sai Saichi falling in love with the little sister of the Mermaid Gundam pilot. Or Domon vs Sai Saichi in the finals. Or... I could go on. Seriously, every time I thought an episode might suck, it surprised me with how much effort it put into giving the characters a soul. It is the first of the Suit entries (as opposed to the Build entries) to not lose me at any point. IBO lost me when the Dainsleif missed. 00 lost me at Season 2. Seed lost me when Lacus showed up, and then proceeded to lose me more constantly. Unicorn maintained my respect throughout, though not a moment passed where I didn't want to drop-kick Banagher. Not so with G.
    [Potential spoilers below...]
Probably what wound up hooking me the most in the series, as with most things, was the main antagonist: the Devil Gundam. I don't think there's any point in the series where you get an unobscured good look at what exactly the Devil Gundam even is (though I _still_ want a kit... yes, of the whole thing...), and it morphs its forms all the time, like a mecha shoggoth. But what it looks like doesn't matter. It's kinda' like Sauron, in that its presence can be felt all over the plot whether or not it actually appears in flesh (or metal, as it were). The DG cells are like its corrupting touch, and those who give themselves over to it for the promise of power are truly foes to be feared in their own right. It took two Shuffle Alliance members scrapping their suits and nearly dying in the process to take down _one_ of the Devil Gundam's own berserker patsies. Twice! This ain't no Seal of Orichalchos situation where the bad guy side has an evil berserker powerup that only seems to result in protagonist-related defeat (looking at you, break decals... now that I think of it, both Divers and Re-Rise make a _lot_ of G Gundam references, both big and small). The Devil Gundam even has its own Saruman in the form of Master Asia, an exceptionally powerful but more in-scale character who sides with the big evil due to genuine ideological agreement.
In fact, anyone can fall under the Devil Gundam's sway, and for nearly any reason, but it seems to be based on a degree of (potentially subconscious) choice. There is an implication that the _real_ event that caused the Devil Gundam to go nuts was Kyoji's immediate feelings of losing his mother to a corrupt, power-hungry admiral's schemes. Ulube's manifestation of the Devil Gundam took his might-makes-right worldview and became massive and unstoppable. And in the end, Rain's manifestation of the Devil Gundam was meant to close herself off from Domon and drive him away. The Devil Gundam capitalized on a weakness in each of their spirits. This is why just about all of Domon's development centers around his journey to inner peace. This is why Master Asia was never corrupted by DG cells. And this is why it totally makes sense for the overpowered extinction machine to be destroyed by the power of love. I don't think the Devil Gundam winds up quite as _deep_ as IBO's Hashmal (still my favorite antagonist in the franchise), but it came closer than anything I've seen.

G Gundam and the original Gundam were my first Gundam series. G Gundam is really great but I only wish it was a little shorter; most of the fights were boring as Domon could just easily win but overall I had such a good time.
Its really nice to see a video about G Gundam that isn't just 'WOW ISN'T IT SO CRAZY AND WEIRD WOOWWWW'.

Epic Video! So awesome to see G Gundam getting the recognition and coverage it deserves! Extremely well said Boofire. This show is a gem and once you really understand what it is doing, and the new life it breathed into the franchise post Victory Gundam; well it becomes one you can really appreciate. Awesome video! Thank you for covering one of the best Gundam series that never gets talked about. Go shout out some Super Robot Hype in the snow, Boo!

I knew of G Gundam, but I never had plans of watching it outside of a possible complete runthrough.
This video, though, made me realise I actually need to. And soon.
    thanks, Boo

9:52 That may have either been an unintentional or brilliantly subtle reflection of their respective cultural backgrounds.

G Gundam is the best Gundam series you can't change my mind. And I've been watching alot of Gundam and this one is by far the best one I love how they had to be in control of there Gundams in order for it to move. It was brilliant I would love to see more Gundam series like G Gundam love this show.

This video reminded me this series exists, and to try it out again. I haven’t tried watching it since I was younger and harshly judged literally anything I didn’t understand and did not immediately pique my interest.
I love checking out the oldies I could never get into back then, and seeing for myself everything I missed out on.
