    Description:
With high expectations, Cartoon Network's Toonami, begins airing Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. In a move to expand the boundaries of the Cartoon Network action-animation block, Toonami programming heads scheme to bring new and unseen anime to western audiences, one of which would become the network’s star and pave the way for one of Japan’s most revered franchises, Mobile Suit Gundam. Gundam Wing opened a new market for anime and gundam mecha toys and models, and ushered in a golden age for Toonami and anime in America.
Taking place in the After Colony timeline (AC 195), Gundam Wing was the second of the, then, 3 alternate timeline Gundam shows (Mobile Fighter G Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, After War Gundam X) which existed as standalone series outside of the mainline Universal Century (UC) timeline started by the original Mobile Suit Gundam and shown in numerous other Gundam works (Mobile Suit Z Gundam, Mobile Suit ZZ Gundam, Char's Counterattack, Mobile Suit Gundam F91, Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, Mobile Suit Gundam: 08th MS Team).
While the show would still have a plethora of gundam mecha, Gundam Wing tried telling it's own story and explored new storytelling avenues. But, is Gundam Wing good? In Gundam Wing: War and Sacrifice, Nerd Talk Dan will look back at this gundam anime after more than 20 years and try to answer this question. So if you want to hear Gundam Wing explained, this Gundam Wing review will hopefully offer you a new perspective on a part of Toonami history.
Nerd Talk Dan looks at how Mobile Suit Gundam Wing brings up issues of war and sacrifice. And the nobility of sacrifice from the men and women we send into battle. Gundam Wing is famous for philosophical pontification on war and peace, but is Gundam Wing good at tackling such deep issues? Can a simple anime properly answer how humanity can move beyond war? We'll look at whether the animation of Gundam Wing as well as its musical score and J-Pop classics Just Communication and Rhythm Emotion, performed by Two Mix, properly conveyed the nobility of sacrifice of professional soldiers. We will also seek to answer whether Gundam Wing is good as a piece of entertainment.
So suit up, and get ready for Gundam Wing: War and Sacrifice.

Arabic Dub changed some micro stuff and it made it way better. Also let me point that the Gundams at the beginning where designed OP enough for the shaw setting. However, imagine they got designed each as OP as possible with technology they have access too at full display from beginning perhaps more OP than later upgrade ?
By the last 20 ep the Gundams are very much more than capable together to destroy any military given a base to supply them. It is not plot armor but lecturely plot armor plus they are a very powerful mobile suites unites amongst an already overpowered concept of independent mobile suites.
They just lacked proper planning and they over written orginal plan very quickly plus lacked condirention. If they wirked together from the beginning properly and give more time and invested more into mobile suites design and systems the earth forces is the one that stands no chance.
However about the show ideas, justice is the most important thing. Justice includes freedom and other things but they share an equal place as amongst the primary elements of justice. For example, Peace is another element: to fulfill justice but you need both but however justice is more important. Because one without the other is tyrany especially peace without justice is a bigger tyrany than justice without peace as that includes oppression. So peace is not a gole or a solution but a by product overtime. Also don't forget there is people that wants something and evil that u have to stop and fight too. Peace has many forms and layers. The best and most important peace is the peace of mind and soul of so called inner-peace. That is very achievable and not linked with outside peace. Wanting just peace is a surrender and weakness plus immoral, because you accepted injustice.
A real example is Isreal and Plastain. Peace is only achievable until gov of Israel becomes religious like an actual kingdom of God like David and Solomon time accepting Islam and Christianity too killing Zionism replaced by Orthodox Jews and racists present where gov is a chancle of Noocracy elected presidents leaders (USA and CIA gets out and defeated) or goes back to Islam and Arabs, especially within a greater Muslim power like First Caliphate or Saladin times. Anything else is injustice.
(Not to mention Israel gov has not been serious at peace and they are controlled by USA. Also lets say a Plastain gov gets formed: Israel gov and cia will just fake a 911 or Main USA and Spain bs like event or any other excuse go to war with Plastain and takeover)

you're deeply preceptive in you're analyst, and I think you explained this to its core and amazing to explain some so enigmatic in its time. flawed or not though this is a very strange thing for its time because its ambiguous in its stance.
I almost suspect it itself is a counter form of American brainwashing it introduces ideas in vague ideas and then shows action scenes to lead into emotional consequences.
I know it left me questioning things going on around me as a kid and it reflected a kind of political backdrop where you would have to watch out for radicalized groups. its only become more true in a sense to.
but I say this in jest of course. but gundam wing is disturbing and thats what's fascinating about it.

Gundam Wing was insane show for me to watch because of its antiwar message and the aftermath of 9/11. Joining the marines 4 years later and being in iraq a few times, the show would be in the back of my mind during that time. Re-watching it after my time in and 3 tours to iraq made me appreciate it even more.

Firstly, thank you for your service Marine. I shall send you a box of crayons to honor you 😂. The show itself is a weird mix of deep and shallow. I can appreciate the ambition but sometimes it looked like they were just doing everything under the sun instead of letting things breath a bit.
If I can ask, as a veteran what particular parts of the show really resonate with you? And what did you come to appreciate post that experience? Hope you don’t mind me picking your brain as I’m writing my next video which deals with military literature and would love to hear from you about how media impacts your view of service.

The closest we got was Glory of Losers which, full transparency, I haven’t read. But apparently that’s something it tried to do. It consolidated everything from the expanded lore into the main GW story and tried to clean it up a bit. The problem is just…how you create a story which properly addresses the themes of war? How do you solve the paradox of needing to fight in order to protect pacifism?

Honestly after watching the show as a kid in 2000 and seeing other Gundam shows and other tv shows... watching it again as an adult... I actually like it better. The one message I got out of the show that made it different than other Gundam shows... the other shows I've seen you have a naive, innocent pilot who has friends and loses them and realizes war is terrible. Gundam Wing skips that and gives you characters who already know war is terrible, who have already done horrible things, who have already lost people. There doesn't need to be a lot of character deaths to show the audience 'war is bad' when the lead character is clearly someone utterly broken by war and what he's done to the point he tries to kill himself 4 times in the first few episodes just so his miserable life as a soldier can finally end. Heero starts the show LOOKING TO DIE. Looking for any excuse to kill himself. And by the end of the show when he's shooting down Libra, he's not using that as an excuse to die, he's not dying to right his past sins, he's not committed to saving everyone even if it kills him... he's saying he'll survive, he'll keep living, he'll keep living life after this. That to me was the real message. You can lose everything, you can do horrible things, you can lose your childhood, lose your innocence, lose your soul... you can want to die because living is so miserable... and you can then find people, a cause, friends, someone special... who make you want to keep living.
Honestly I feel killing off any more characters than they did would cheapen it. All the pilots know loss already, all the soldiers know loss already. The civillians were shown loss through the show already. It was a lesson they already knew and understood.

It is fascinating how Gundam veered off into very different directions regarding both child soldiers and asymmetric warriors post 9/11. Regarding child soldiers, compare and contrast Wing with Iron Blooded Orphans.
Regarding asymmetric warfare, the comparison between Wing and 00 is also pretty stark.

    • @MarvinT0606
      @MarvinT0606 หลายเดือนก่อน

IBO institutionalized child-soldiers and made it worse with literal slaves added to the mix. The five Gundam pilots in Wing were the only ones prominently shown, and they were trained like special ops operatives. As to asymmetric warfare, 00 isn't exactly analogous to Wing: they engaged in armed interventions without directly provoking the 3 power blocs to declare war-- they just ended up being the targets of a worldwide manhunt. Gundam Wing on the other hand clearly establishes that the five Gundams were designed as a consequence of the Earth Sphere government's tyranny, and the colonies had every intention of going to war had Operation Meteor went ahead as planned.

For my part, everything surrounding the ZERO System showed the brainwashing side of warfare (especially since both guerrillas like the Gundam 5 and the conventional soldier Zechs were equally affected by it) while also keeping to Wing's idea that violence is a part of humanity that predates politics. I especially liked the parts where Quarte becomes uber extremist to support his cause--even at the expense of the people he took it up for--and how Heero's first run with ZERO had him realize how much harm the Gundam Scientists did to him and, presumably, the other 5.
I'm also under the impression that Zechs and Treize cooked up their Final War together (albeit, without talking to each other), meaning Zechs never actually believed in Colony Supremacy and only wanted to crash Libra into Earth to terrify everyone from the mere idea of war for the rest of history, not abandon Earth. Seems like what he and Treize were talking about the entire time, why Zechs never really seemed on the same page as White Fang and how he helped stop the colony crash when it became apparent that everyone got the message that war sucks. Did I misread all of that?
I will agree that 3 people surviving the epicenter of explosions is ridiculous, though. I also thought Duo's friend looked WAY too similar to Noin. I literal thought Duo's Friend was Noin once or twice.

I really liked your analysis, I've watched GW when young and discounted it for the repeative and inplausible fight scene and plot armors. But it will be refreshing indeed to watch it again with a political lense.
As hasty as it ends up being, it's a good entry point.

Hey MZM M! Thanks so much for your comment.
Yeah there were a lot of ways they could’ve tightened up the series, but it is what we got and I think it can be appreciated as a fun entry point to anime for so many of us. I don’t regret it having been such an important part of my formative years. I still love Gundam to this day because of it.

Chapter4 is why I loved GW (and where the online moniker I've used for over 20 years came from). It was refreshing, and is still somewhat rare decades later, to see media with such a blatant anti-war stance NOT take the angle of denigrating soldiers while also not pushing the then-emergent attitude that computers and autonomous weapons would defend us without needing to put men and women in harm's way. While some of Treize's speeches were grandiose and overly flowered, they very eloquently made the case that by removing the risk of loss in a war, you make it easier to sell and more likely to occur- which, counter-intuitively, puts more lives at risk, as the weapons become deadlier and more widespread as the 'risk' is lessened. He at first seems to be trying to glorify soldiers, but when you really listen to what he's saying, and especially on a rewatch after knowing the full arc of the plotline, you eventually realize that he knows removing the 'personal face' of war, by removing the soldiers, actually puts everyone at risk, as it's the soldiers' humanity, compassion, and ability to make decisions based on morality that actually keep people safe, while simultaneously realizing that if war is reduced to computers vs. computers, then people don't fear it as much since it's not their loved ones going off to do the fighting- and only by making people realize how much they stand to lose can you truly prevent wars. not through fear and 'strength', but by appealing to humanity and morality. I doubt it will ever actually work, but it's the most noble and realistic form of Pacifism I've ever seen espoused in mass media.

I agree with a lot of what you said, and I disagree with a lot. 😅
I love Gundam Wing, and at this point it's hard to know what I've re watched more between Gundam Wing and Gundam 00.
That said, Gundam Wing is a camp soap opera and I think it deserves more respect than it gets as I think it's "takes itself way too seriously" reputation fits perfectly for the Gundam Fandom, we take Gundam way too seriously and at the end of the day it's just a toy commercial. 🤷 I think Gundam Wing honestly was just trying to be a darker series without the baggage that comes with making good on that. It was still a kid's show, and at the time UC Gundam had gotten too dark for it's own good. (Looking at you Victory Gundam 👀). But I hear you.
Last thing, Zechs. He's not all over the place. He's the prince of a kingdom that was built on pacifism. And he betrayed his lineage to restore his family's kingdom. Then tries to make amends for his actions. Realizing he has failed and only knows how to kill, he is literally lost, without purpose because he wants peace, but only knows how to kill. Enter Epyon and White Fang. Not knowing how to help stopping wars to live up to his family name he asks the Zero System in Epyon. A suit designed for zero sum war, leads Zechs to the illogical conclusion that as someone who only knows how to kill, the best way to stop wars is to kill so many people that the world loses interest in fighting all together. Basically the same plot in Watchmen.
He's only a char clone in looks, yes he follows a similar arc, but he's not a true char clone. Imo, char is fractured between Trieze and Zechs in Gundam Wing.

At this point Heero might just be immortal. Have you counted the times his accidents would have killed a lesser man?
FOUR or maybe even five times in the first three episodes.
Episode one: He falls from space Dead on impact. Even sexy Sechs said so.
Also Episode one: Suicide by suit bomb (Ever noticed how often he tries to blow up his suit and just fails?)
Episode two: Several gunshot wounds to his extremities. None hit any vital organs but there were several of them. Plus it was a hectic situation making his heart beat and him lose a fatal amount of blood fast.
Also Episode two: He decided to drown for a bit.
Episode three: Jumped out of the side of a building. Which was situated on top of a cliff.
Screw gundamium. They should coat the Gundams in whatever his plotarmor is made of!
Sometimes he clearly died and then an episode or two later it's just "Well he got better."
Floating face down in the water in Episode 2? That was a floating corpse. Or when he blew up his Gundam. The core is near the cockpit. That explosion means certain death. Then he fell like 10 meters. But unlike his jump out of a building he did not somehow catch himself. He did break his fall though. With his face. On the ground. The blank stare with the empty eyes. That was a dead body. I mean Trowa even left him in Heavy Arms' Hand, which was towed to a truck instead of placing him in the drivers cabin. Who would do that do a still living, but mortally wounded person?
In my opinion he's the most ridiculously overpowered character in Anime history. I know there's always Saitama and Goku and whoever else. But Those are superhuman figures in fantasy worlds. Gundam aims to be very realistic. (Blisfully ignoring the glory that is G-Gundam here for the sake of argument) Even the space colonies are based on real ideas. And in a setting like that i know of no other situation where people just walk off deaths.
It became a running gag among friends who know G Wing. If some character is hyped as the best and strongest ever we top it off with "he probably also punched Heero in the face."

      @NerdTalkDan  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

For real! I mean he should’ve been dead pretty much episode 2 from drowning. I had a joke in one of my first drafts where I pointed out how Duo and Relena left him face down in the ocean for a REALLY long time for dramatic effect. That’s where my line “it takes itself seriously and perhaps too seriously” came from.

Peace is only achievable until gov of Israel becomes religious like an actual kingdom of God like David and Solomon time accepting Islam and Christianity too killing Zionism replaced by Orthodox Jews and racists present where gov is a chancle of Noocracy elected president leaders (USA and CIA gets out and defeated) or goes back to Islam and Arabs, especially within a greater Muslim power like First Caliphate or Saladin times.

People forget why Gundam Wing was so important to the West. Wing not only was the first Gundam dubbed to be aired, but it was the first toonami show to have both a censored and uncensored episode airing concurrently. Then DBZ hopped on next. Also it was outperforming all of Cartoon Network shows since DBZ went on a mini break to hype the Garlin Jr and Cell Sagas. When DBZ returned, Wing’s final cour still was breathing down DBZ’s ratings. I can articulate why it was so popular. Cartoon Network was in a transitional phase before some of the most iconic shows like Samurai Jack, Kids Next door, ed Edd and eddy etc. began airing. It was full of scooby doo, Hannah barbera cartoons, the light hearted DC super hero shows and the 90s DC super hero shows. Wing was so different and made you question why we should we root for the edgelord MC rather than the handsome charismatic and noble antagonist. Anime since, has it to thank for popularizing edgier content.

Then 1 episode later, he questions to Lady Une why they’re still keeping the captured Gundam pilots alive(and later in the episode he tries to kill them). It’s always a question too on whether to go with what has become the accepted pronunciations of Japanese words when speaking English for long standing loan words like “karate” or “karaoke”. I usually default to the Japanese pronunciation but would never say”カラテ Kid” for example. So it’s always a funny little balancing act.
Anyway, I rambled a bit. Good luck in your Japanese studies and feel free to stop by the channel again to talk and update me on how it’s going!

I came to this game fleeing from Hearthstone this year. Talk about bad timing. I loved the shift away from monetization built on the card purchases themselves, and felt it was a great step into modernizing digital card games. Shame I came to it so late. I'm hoping the grace period gives enough incentive and time to reconsider their decision.
I feel LoR could be getting some influx soon now that Hearthstone has been so slow to address botting and also cutting several game modes. I know lots of companies synchronize their layoffs to soften PR damage, but this would be the time if any to see some resurgence from the struggles of some other card games. Snap is definitely becoming a strong competitor, but again it has some problematic monetization, and I wish so badly that people could see the value of a game that tries so hard to break bad monetization that plagues similar games.

I love Gundam Wing but I'm not going to ignore its problems there were too many balance of power ships for the sake of shaking the status quo so they're never felt like there was a primary villain not having the primary faction that is the enemy made the show feel like it lacked Focus oz Roma Feller Foundation the trays faction White Fang it just tried to do too much for its own good

And that's fine, most of us watched it when we were kids but that doesn't mean we have to praise it for that or ignore it's problems. Wing is a good show, not the best among the other Gundam shows but good regardless of that. It's finale feels rushed and many factions appear and disappear very quickly like the Treize faction but i think of Endless Waltz as the real conclusion to the story, even when there is the Frozen Teardrop manga (not good at all in my opinion).

Gundam wing is a philosophical masterpiece even though pacing was cramed it hit all theu key points with precision. War begets war and the fallout from it. The grasp of power. The newee generation having better potential n skill than the last. The progress and inconsistentcy of humanity and our current society.. one could even say Wing was ahead of its time dictating the political climate we are currently in... Lets not down play this masterpiece of a series we either took for granted or didn't realize.

    • @NerdTalkDan
      @NerdTalkDan  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hey Max Zero, thanks for stopping by!
It depends on how you define “Gundam team”. You could argue Z Gundam had a Gundam team with the Zeta, Mk II, and (debatable) Hyaku Shiki.
I would say that there were obviously other teams before G Gundam, Gundam Wing seems explicitly templated on G Gundam.

    • @maxzero3647

@@NerdTalkDan but ZZ had them working on screen more then G gundam since they were rival not partners as well

    • @NerdTalkDan
      @NerdTalkDan  ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@maxzero3647 That’s fair, but then you would also have to mention that the pilots in Wing ALSO fought each other. There’s no single answer, but G Gundam came out the year before Wing, Bandai specifically mandated 5 gundams similar to G Gundam, and Shenlong/Altron are clearly based on Neo-China’s gundam. It seems likelier, to me, that the creative staff took inspiration from G Gundam which was more recent, rather than looking back to ZZ. But obviously is up to debate and doesn’t really matter at the end of the day.

I'm doing a watch through of Gundam, one UC and one nonUC at a time. Just finished 00, and almost done with ZZ. Unintentionally watched Wing and 00 back to back. Got a little exhausted from the plot armored emo boys. 00 really is just an improved remake of Wing.
    GW
    Pros
    - Mech designs, including some of my favorite MP and MD designs (Aries 💯)
    - Some of the best music in Gundam
    - Character design and overall aesthetic
    Cons
    - Emotionless/boring characters
    - Confusing or non-existant motivations
    - Muddy politics, ideas on how to achieve peace (Quatre seems to be the only one with any sense)
    - The most plot armor ever, even some of the few characters that 'die' end up living.
    00
    Pros
    - Interesting characters
    - Clearer motivations
    - More focus on child soldiers, but IBO is better (most Gundam series kinda brush that under the rug)
    - More realistic politics and path to peace (if still unrealistic)
    - Less plot armor
    Cons
    - But still a decent amount of plot armor
    - Some of the worst overall mech designs in Gundam (Exia and 00 are some exceptions)
    - Too much too fast, can take a second to figure out who is who, or what is happening
    - Too many characters in general, long time for some payoffs and a few are not even needed (Wang Liu Mei especially)
