I'm 100% sure that if there are space colonies that existed IRL, the prejudice would be the other way around. The people living in space would be the one to look down to people stuck on earth 🤣
That is the case in the FC timeline, where all the elites went to space and took all the resources with them, leaving earth as an almost desolate wasteland
I always felt sorry for Dozle. All the man wanted was to protect his family and his siblings took advantage of his love to manipulate him into thinking horrific acts were needed to win the war. The poor dude has a panic attack after Operation British because he recognizes the human cost and how evil his siblings really are.
I'd argue that both Garma and Dolze were good, with Degwin and Kycilia being more neutral, Sasro being evil, and Gihren being super evil. Kycilia and Degwin didn't have the desire to genocide people or kill without reason. They would be satisfied so long as they remained in power. Sasro gave off the impression that he enjoyed harming others, while Gihren's ideology was just that of Hitler's. Imo, Gihren's cruelty is what doomed his family. As peace would have been forged during the initial skirmish had Degwin had his way.

It as an astoundingly powerful opening for the OG Gundam 0079 to open on narration explaining, as you said, that *half of the entire human race had died* over the course of a year-long war, and so now let's get to our story. As friends pointed out to me, people who worked on that show very much could have been alive during and had memories of World War 2, and assuredly its aftermath. They knew apocalyptic wars better than most of us now possibly could, and may that remain so.
I’m pretty sure everyone in Australia survived. It’s Australia in all fairness. An Aussie would just shrug it and walk off like a champ in a kangaroo boxing match.
The reason why mobile suits were used by Zeon is because they were, at first, a waste. They were originally intended to be mere construction units like the RB-79 Ball before being used for military applications. When Zeon revealed their combat mobile suits, the federation saw it as a joke and made fun of it like "it can babysit without squishing a baby" "it can solve a Rubics cube even with its giant fingers" and other sarcastic insults you can think of. And it was intentional, Zeon needed to be seen by the Federation and perceived as an incompetent wannabe military force full of idiots to camouflage their strengthening military. My only gripe is the fact that they use legs. IN SPACE. The zaku would have been just as good with its legs replaced by rocket boosters and loads of RCS thrusters. I mean look at the S Gundam Booster Unit Type and the Deep Striker from Gundam Sentinel. They are mobile suits with rocket boosters for legs. And they were created 8 years after the one year war
I always interpreted the legs being for in-colony work. Like these things are basically one man gunboats or even corvettes with their size and firepower, and with legs they can be deployed inside of colonies to terrorize the population into submission
The legs are for AMBAC, active mass balance auto control, AMBAC allows for the mobile suit to shift its mass in space allowing for zero thrust maneuverability which not only allows for the mobile suit to use less fuel it also allows for more erratic maneuvers.
While giant robots are great, it is the lore and the grace with which the conflicts are generally rendered that inspires people to keep coming back to the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise again and again...well, that is, until The Witch from Mercury. For fans of that series, Shipping is sufficient. Everything else is a detriment.
The only decent thing we got from that show was the prologue... I wasn't hyped but at least that made thr series look promising, but, well you all know how it went
Always loved the one year war during the UC. Probably the most interesting series of events in all of Gundam, and we’ve seen less than half the events on-screen.
Once ZEON lost the OYW, ZEON became a bunch of splinter groups. ZEON could have had independence if Char didn’t kill the Zabi family but I don’t blame Char because I would have done the exact same thing.
Also the Zabis are a bunch of Assholes TBH, with a few exceptions in the Autocratic family most of them would have been really bad at ruling it anyways, it wasn't like the Zabis were just revolutionaries they were really far from it.
I had only ever watched gundam wing and such. I just started watching the original gundam. So this is super interesting and explains the back story for me
Love the vid. Drones in Ukraine are a prime example of the same phenomenon with Mobile Suites. In war games, the USA #1 real life weakness is this exact scenario (lower cost technological advance to counter expensive ships/tanks)
I have a question regarding the civilian losses. What event caused Zeon to lose half of their population? Was there some big counterattack that we don't know about? Edit: I looked it up. It's just a translation error.
Zeon was formed in 0058, not 53, and the national guard was formed immediately after its formation (albeit, likely still as a Earth Federation precaution), not in response to the Bardo Policy which was in 0059 (at least, according to some timelines).

16:04 I'd also call that a major strategic failure. Not only did they fail to destroy the enemy's main command center and forces on Earth as planned, the colony drop was such a massive and blatant atrocity that Zeon should expect it to be near impossible to find any recruits or allies from then on.
27:00 “Just 60mm guns” the 30mm gay on the avenger creates enough force to slow the warthog at full power. The Russians developed a (slightly) larger gun and put in in a jet, firing the gun cause massive damage to the aircraft. To be fair mobile suits work because minovosky particles nullify any long range guided firepower central to modern combat doctrine although I also think the franchise doesn't acknowledge that unguided artillery would still be a major player for each mobile suit battles but isn't really brought up. Also the fact that those engines can propel a multi ton machine with rubbish aerodynamics to maneuver in atmosphere with the speed they have is insane. You would think they would armor their battleships better with how much energy those minosvky engines put out lol

@ my guy a residential building can span multiple city blocks…. And yea… helicopters and jets are outdated because they ARE slower than the mobile suits… that’s why the federation was losing in the beginning prior to the introduction of the gundam. Zion had mass produced zaku suits and the feds had very little amounts of GM suits. They still relied on tanks, jets, helicopters
The only reason why mechs work in gundam is because it’s a sci-fi universe with sci-fi technology. And also, you could just fit all that technology into tanks and fighter jets and they would immediately be better than mechs lol. The only way mechs can for-sure be practical is in a non-combat or logistical support roles.
Brother in real life a mobile suits wouldn't work, Gravity (physics) and of course the fuel consumption. Not to mention the enormous amount of metal needed. You're taking the anime too literal for reality.
Mobile suits WOULD be a waste in real life. Because in real life, ships would shoot at each other from so far out of visual range its not even funny. Minovsky particles aren't real, and without them the whole concept falls apart, at least in space combat. Now, if you could make a mech that performs that well in terrestrial environments it'd definitely be better than tanks, but it's very likely that a more practical design would be less humanoid in shape.
Not only that but inventing mobile suits doesn't automatically make tanks and the like obsolete. In real life a mobile suit would be considered a form of shock infantry.
AND even if we had all that sci-fi stuff, the power plants, the energy shields and weapons, why not just fit them on tanks to make them even more practical than mechs?
@@smileyface6583to be fair, tanks won't stay the same way we know them now and will rapidly evolve as well. Maybe in the end something that can incorporate all that high tech will be an unholy, but highly optimised mixture of both mechs and tanks.

Zion had mass produced zaku suits and the feds had very little amounts of GM suits. They still relied on tanks, jets, helicopters
19:35 PREACH BROTHER PREACH, im so sick of people telling me mechs will never work in real life tanks are way better

ZEON WERE THE GOOD GUYS
Too bad SLG genre is basically dead and brings Gihren's Greed with it
Brother in real life a mobile suits wouldn't work, Gravity (physics) and of course the fuel consumption.
So if we just invent or discover Minovsky particles, we can have practical Gundams?
So you're saying there's a chance?
Not only that but inventing mobile suits doesn't automatically make tanks and the like obsolete. In real life a mobile suit would be considered a form of shock infantry.
AND even if we had all that sci-fi stuff, the power plants, the energy shields and weapons, why not just fit them on tanks to make them even more practical than mechs?
@@smileyface6583*Heavy Object would like to know your location*
@@smileyface6583to be fair, tanks won't stay the same way we know them now and will rapidly evolve as well. Maybe in the end something that can incorporate all that high tech will be an unholy, but highly optimised mixture of both mechs and tanks.
geez can you sound any more like a 12 year old that wrote an essay for the first time? it was so packed with edge it was barely watchable
