I tried plasterboarding my ceiling solo, but found DIY Youtubers are LYING to you!

- Hi all, as the weather is freezing right now and our ceiling is exposed due to frozen/burst water pipes that wrecked the old plasterboard and flooded the house before we bought it, I challenge myself to install new drywall on the ceiling. THEN we can replace the missing insulation and top up the rest.
I bought a plasterboard lift and a carrier to challenge myself to install tapered 12.5mm thick 2400 x 1200mm sheets (25kg each) on it on my own, but can I do this DIY on my own without asking for help??? And is it as easy as other TH-camrs tell you?
Here I expose the REALITY, what ended up being TRUE for me compared to the easy sailing TH-cam video tutorials I'd watched as part of my research.
Note, for reference I'm a 5ft 4inch female. Also, the lowest point my angled drywall lift goes to is 100mm/1 metre/39 inches.

The yellow plasterboard lifter is designed to use single handed. You lift with the one hand and lean the plasterboard at a slight angle against the same shoulder as the hand you are lifting with. It works with all sheet materials pretty well. Hope that helps for next time or helps anyone else reading this 👍excellent effort btw. For ceilings on your own, 6x3 sheets makes life much easier 🙂

Is the material supposed to rest on your back a bit as you lift? So you have to bend down and let it rest on your back while holding onto the lifter with one hand?

As a non skilled person who has done up two houses with friends help and some great builder friends, who now will be selling our current property, we too will be trying to get a dooer upper. I disturbed a large wasps nest moving a tree once, very painful. Use a plastic bag in case some are alive. I plaster boarded my large extension using a lifter, half inch by 8 x 4 sheets. Noggins nailed at joints, run the long side at right angles to the trusses run. My wife helped lift onto the lifter, and helped position to start screwing up. Get a Nail-gun to fit framing timbers, it saves clamping up.
You must be close to me, I live near Sutton Bridge, my place was nearly as bad. We once had a Rectory in the eighties , cost £20,000 cash. Pulled it down and built a new large house and double garage for £32,500.
I can't deny that when I heard the word 'mallet' and then saw it in action, I felt pleased to see it still being used. 😁

Very satisfying seeing that ceiling go in, great job. I plasterboarded a ceiling completely myself in a flat about 20yrs ago. I built a wooden frame out of some spare floor battens (all the floors had to come up in that place, don't even want to think about that now). The frame held the plasterboard about an inch or so from the ceiling so I could move it, then I wedged newspapers under the legs of the frame to lift it up for fixing. It somehow worked, but don't remember how I managed to get the boards up onto the frame! Insulation next - take it easy with that, I''ve done it and it's one of the most unpleasant jobs I've done, I pulled some muscles in my shoulders and took ages to recover. So glad you're picking up lots of views & subs, well deserved!

Hi Vikkie, brilliant effort as usual. Just a word of caution with the portable gas heater (they are amazing) having had a near miss with using one: it's possible to get a build up of carbon monoxide, so make sure you're room is well ventilated and, better, get a carbon monoxide detector.

Put lifter against a wall, lean the board against it, put both hands under the bottom and lift until the bottom of the board pops on. Having struggled to do a 12ft ceiling without a lifter I would say they are god send.
Its a breath of fresh air listening to your knowledge and watching you work your dad must be proud of you im guessing hes a good one 👍
We've got a lot closer since I've been pestering him for his advice for the last few years.
He's got a lifetime of building experience I love to tap into.
i admire your tenacity....i'm six four and strong as an ox but a full sheet of plasterboard is challenging because it has leverage on it's side...even with the lift it's really a two person job as the potential for injury is very real.
I'm so glad you said that!!!!! It really wasn't worth the potential permanent injury, then suffer for the rest of the projects. I needed to try it though to be sure 😆
I resigned myself long ago to cutting the sheets down. I can then manage them using a deadman.
That's very brave. I think using a deadman would wind me up 😅

100% i had a mate who thought he knew it all, and we had to pay a pro to rip out and pay a professional plaster.

You could always tell an old plasterer ...... they walked with a humped shoulder!
No joke! That was when bags of plaster were heavy and walking round the site with one on your shoulder took its toll on your body!
They (plasterers) would say plaster boarding was easier than humping bags round ...... so this is the "easy" bit ;o)
You do seem to have done a reasonable job, especially as it is your first go and you don't know how to hump stuff round!
One thing often missed when boarding up is the correct depth of the screw! You need it to be below the surface but not so much that it rips the surface paper. If you do it will not last in good condition and you will see "blowout" where your screws are!
Most boarders will tend to measure with a tape and cut the vertical stack before lifting it. Holding the edge of a tape measure and your knife and the other end of the tape allows you to cut a straight line quickly and easily ..... but maybe not without a lot of practice!
Good move on the insulation though! More is better on that score. Certainly don't go for less than regs on depth. Also be aware that some types of insulation will collapse with time giving less insulatitive value after a few years, so too much is good. Also you Know they will be upping the U values needed sooner or later!
As regards White meters ...... You have asked for a change of tariff so there is no reason they could simply not add the 2 readings (24hr and E7 off peak) to give a total units used and aply your requested tariff to that! ...... £400 is excessive especially given your usage. Did you record your first day readings and does that reading tally with their start reading and also the end read is accurate ....... amazing how lax they can be about accuracy when giving their demands for payment out! It is also worth checking exactly what your old tariff was and what the times of your "Off peak" are ...... if you are on an afternoon boost it is like Gold .... Do Not Change It! If it is a standard E7 with a Teleswitch (radio controlled) it might be better to change as your Day rate units are higher than a standard tariff! Pleas let me know if you have problems sorting this one out ..... or even working out what you actually have!

I have a quick tip if you are taping joints with scrim tape.
After putting it on the joints across the whole ceiling, use pva glue on the tape before filling. This gives a much better surface to fill and the tape doesn't keep falling off.

Thank you :) I'd rather set someone up for success than failure to avoid any pitfalls! I love the idea of someone's suggestion to try stepping on a crate lower than the bench. Maaaaybe that would've worked, but will probably use 3f wide ones next time lol

Great video and good luck with the project. A bit late for this room but it would be worth considering insulated plaster board if replacing any other ceilings. Also air tightness membranes and tapes also worth considering. Just a suggestion! Looking forward to all the videos👍

I took down and boarded pretty much every ceiling in my house a couple of years ago, it's a ballache! I had a bit of help from my old man but we did it without a proper lift. In the end we had a decorators tower on wheels with two modified plasterboard props strapped to it (I took the tiny foot off the top and bolted on a baton for more support). My joists were oddly far apart so I noggined between them every 600 upstairs, I soon found out the joists were all on the wonk. Downstairs I just cross battoned the whole ceiling with blue roofing battons and packed them out to be level where the joists were out. All fun and games! I would say if you're putting coving back up you could have left a small gap all around the walls, it would have gotten covered up. looking good though! Makes a big difference to the temperature having even just boards in place.
That sounded like an absolute nightmare!!
But you came up with some ingenious solutions.

I reckon you were very happy when you finished.
I'm relieved mine is straightforward, but at the same time gave me the opportunity to show putting support up so others can hopefully see it's achievable even at amateur level like myself.😀

It's all about having a go and learning. I'd never done it before either and ended up leaning how to box in steels haha your ceiling came out great, very tidy!
You remind me so much of me with your sheer grit and determination to get the job done. I felt your pain boarding ceilings is hard work i have one left to do and i don't think the area is big enough to use a lift.
You're so lucky to be able to make as much noise as you like - I've been fitting my kitchen for what seems like forever but when you live in a flat with a family above and a family below (where they're both nurses and one does nights when the other does days) you know that any noise is going to disturb someone 😬
I can relate to that. I'm in a terrace and am always conscious of the noise I make. I use hand tools wherever possible.

@@grayhalf1854 Oh no, that sounds hard! So much suffering involved in renovations when you have to live in them while working on them. You just have to keep going. I find deciding on a job each day helps with motivation. You pick one job and pledge to get it done that day. Best thing to do with the wasp nest is to cover with a bin bag and pull off. No mess 👍

little tip when staggering board , on the second row of boards , move the first board over one joist position and fix when you fit second board strip off the end and put it next to first board

The multitool quite possibly the greatest tool ever invention!!
Be careful. Accidents happy so easily. Know your limitations, for you that is your height, your arm length, you bodily strength. Don't be afraid to ask for help, particularly in lifting. If you damage your back, you have a problem for the rest of your life. But good to see you tackling this big project.
I did a refurbishment job water damage and woodworm damage, fitted new joists etc, the ceiling I counter battened, and fitted foil insulation, onto the ceiling joists, I asked the client what was it like to heat. She said its the warmest room in the house, also foamed the window jambs, and gaps, and dot and dabbed with moisture resistant boards. Your getting there 👍, well done.

Well done Vickie. My heart was in my mouth when you were maneuvering that first plasterboard when it was on the lift. It looks so rickety. I thought it was going to drop on your head.
When you’re doing the jointing, definitely use the gauze scrim tape. It’s a lot better than the paper type.
Thank you! I'm using both types for it. Gauze for tapered, paper for butt joins. And yes, it's probably not as good as the ones you hire and you have to trust it!
I would have been tempted to put some celotex or kingspan across the joists and then put the plasterboard underneath that would give you a really warm room when you insulate between the joists. If you are going for a heat pump this will help enormously.
Wasps nests go that colour when they are dead and they don’t come back to a dead nest.
That lifter should tilt and be low enough to get the plaster board on with out too much strife. We didn’t see you tilting it down so you may have done that and still to have the upper body strength, but good on you for trying.
I had to help my husband do our ceiling in our extension. It’s hard. I’m 5 ft, so a much improvised broom and some careful placing of wooden props, sorted it nicely.
That's exactly what we did in the last house, but there were 4 of us on it 😆

Had a big plaster board job a few years back. 189 sheets. Lots of 12’ long sheets to save on seams. Bought a lift exactly like yours just blue in colour. First time I had used one. I’ll never hang plater board without it again.
I have the same project and faced the same issue regarding the non existent end ceiling joist, like you I will have a go at most DIY tasks but plastering especially ceilings, is an art form, I would certainly pay a professional to do it, great video and took some tips along the way, thank you.

Vickie - great video again - job well done! I have the same Trend pocket hole jig, I’ve mounted mine on a piece of 18mm OSB off cut so it spreads the weight and allows you plenty of area to clamp to a work bench when your using it on bigger items for balance. Keep up the good work!
Great job for doing that on your own, they're not easy to lift. Only thing I would have thought to do different is to lift the board up and rest it on you head. That way it would have been easier to drop it on the lift rather than trying to lift it up straight.

Wasps are amazing, seriously. So many think they're just all negative, but they do wonders in the garden for pest control, yes, really. And their engineering skills with their nests constructed of paper that they make from shaving off wood in your garden... just perfect. And often in the wrong place, sigh. I wonder if the previous human residents had the exterminator in. Being kind to wasps is less weird than it sounds.

As a plastering technician this video was straight up my alley and enjoyed it even more, a cool piece of kit to use would be a collated screw gun as this allows for speed and no need to hold the dry wall screws
Also watching you lift that plaster board made me want to be there helping you, I would have definitely got the 6x3 boards because they are 13kg compared to the 8x4 25kg boards but as you said that would be more taping and filling but it's definitely easier if you are by yourself

I've just installed a new floor Pier, to lift a sagging section of my floor. yes, the door frame was warped, needed squaring off. Bought a cheap Chinese 50 ton jack to do the job.

A little bit of maths tells us that a 6x3ft sheet is going to be the weight of 18 sq feet of plasterboard, and a 4x8ft sheet is the weight of 32 sq feet, so is almost twice as heavy, well, about 1.8 times. It is always possible to cut board into more manageable sizes.
Tapered board restricts you to laying it with tapered edges together, so you may get some tricky joints, if you tuck tapers into slots left by previous plasterboard, so if using coving, why bother? There is no great advantage, and a waste of time removing old fragments of plasterboard that will be hidden forever. The plasterboard adhesive used for plaster coving us an excellent filler that may be used to fill gaps at the edges of ceilings being boarded, also never seen once the coving is up.
I have plasterboarded ceilings on my own many times over the years, and never used a plasterboard lift, I'm a male about 5'9, so always needed steps, often in older properties with ceilings higher than 8ft, or 2400mm high, using battens screwed to the wall to support corners and plasterboard ends - screw holes generally get hidden behind the coving.

I admire your guts and tenacity but the purpose of the plasterboard lift doodah is to lift the sheet and hold it in position while you finesse the final position and get it secured. It is a two person job to load a sheet onto the frame that’s just the way it is. But well done.👍

Nice job Vickie! A bit late now, but just in case, the shrouded plasterboard screwdriver bits make it so much easier. You can just whizz the screw in at full speed, the the shroud will pop the bit out of the screw when it is set to the right depth. The other thing I found made that job so much easier was a Dead Man Prop (see the piccie on the ukdiy wiki).

Great vid. Im currently looking at a plasterboard lift, the one day hire cost is only fractionally cheaper than buying one, so im buying one as well as I've a few jobs to get done. Ive got the same one in my basket, but its out of stock, guess you've made them to popular...
Only advantage of the ceiling coming in is it looks like you have a good roof.

The roof definitely looks good, but some comments have suggested it needs more cross braces, so I might have to pay a structural engineer to cast their eyes over it properly before we think about putting solar panels on.

I don't know why there's comments suggesting scrim tape - that's not a good idea unless you are plastering the whole thing. We've made a ceiling look pretty much perfect taping and jointing (with paper tape). Paper tape doesn't try to fall off if it's applied correctly. Don't know why there's talk of PVA. I highly recommend watching the advice of Vancouver Carpenter channel. In the UK we seem to assume that plastering is the 'proper' way. If you can afford a plasterer it will be perfect and much quicker. We found that taping and jointing is more difficult to do well than expected and takes ages. Joints need several sessions of Easyfill and sanding. For DIYers like us its hours of work but can look perfect in the end.
This seems to be a contentious issue, I did buy both types of tape to have a stab at it.
the way I see it is if I mess up, it will make a funny video and I can just get a plasterer in afterward to clean up my mess, I've done the donkey work, let the artist do their thing.
Great job. I think coving looks good on a high ceiling but in a room that height would go without, even in an older property, it definitely makes the room seem smaller unless it's a 7ft+ ceiling
As for plasterboard, was considering it but as a 8 stone 5'11 guy I'm not mr universe so wouldn't do it alone!
I have the economy 7 . Saves a bit as put washing machine on though the night and dishwasher. During winter’s months I get up a bit early before economy 7 ends to tumble dry . Does save a bit of money

I had fewer sheets and a fair bit taller than you, but had to get them round the corner in a staircase (by myself, again), and then was working in a 2.6x2.6m room with some floorboards missing - quite a juggle to cut to size and get it the right way on the lifter :S good effort!

Hi Vickie, you are doing a brilliant job with the plaster board you will get them all up in no time. Use scrim tape on the joints use some PVA before filling. You got this keep it up mate Take care👍👍
I'm guessing you leave the PVA to dry first before putting the scrim tape on? Is this because the paper on the plasterboard is porous?
And is it a PVA solution?

Me and my Dad did this without the jack tool after first installing insulation. By the time the ceiling was done my arms wanted to drop off and I'm way stronger than your average guy. It's a maul 😂

I did thIs a few years ago on my own using a step ladder and two cheap ratchet props. I made two T frames from 2 by 2 with pipe lagging on top to initially place a edge. I had to position everything carefully before I started. Not a easy job.
Replaced a lot of the economy 7 storage heaters when working as a domestic electrician years ago. Are bloody heavy. Have to do a few of the bricks at a time due to the weight of them.
Mr TCD is hoping to recycle the bricks for a future project 😆

I've missed them! We had one in storage that my parents are now using. Didn't have the heart to ask for it back so bought a new one. At least you know how much it's costing you to use each week!

That yellow handle is great for carrying but works against you for lifting. You discovered that when you grabbed that step riser to try and lift it higher. If you lifted from the bottom with your hands, you'd already be 18 inches higher. The other part of your difficulty is your economically priced lift doesn't look like it lowers as much for loading as higher priced models. On that note, be careful working under that lift. They had to cut corners somewhere to get that price. It may be that the welds aren't the best or aren't full welds. It's very likely that any assembly bolts are made from a lesser steel than a higher end model.
Agree and wanted say same. Use the yellow handle for transporting but for lifting up try just with your hands.
I agree it felt flimsy and I was surprised that it worked so well, I don't think bit's put more than 25kg on it despite what it says it can hold.
If I had to redesign it, I'd make sure it lowered to a foot off the ground for loading.😁
I read one comment say I should learn how to flick it up with the back of my foot. I don't think I'd ever do that many to learn that skill though.
