- Hi all - this is the 2nd week of moving into our new auction renovation house... we had NO water, NO central heating, NO ceilings, and MISSING insulation due to previous frozen and burst pipes.
But with Winter coming, we REALLY needed to investigate what the problem was and get things to a livable state.
I was hoping it would be a quick fix, BUT we weren't that lucky... and let's face it.... no one's a fan of crawling around an attic with no boards. So I had to tread carefully and one wrong foot could've been a disaster.
Meanwhile, I turned to Speedfit (plastic plumbing) and showed how it's great for beginners and ordinary home DIYers to do repairs without hiring an expensive plumber.

As @awt says, soldering (especially with pre-soldered copper) is easy and can be very satisfying. Just need to make sure to add a smear of flux to both pieces - pipe and joint openings - and do all joint ends at the same time. Have a few practise goes first.

Love your videos and how you don't complain brushing up glass fibre insulation shows how much you are beating the jobs.
I first Uni summer job was feeding glass fibre growbags through a machine that hated being a gorwbag filler... We had to stand underneath the raw material (glass fibre) with no face or eye protection wearing a boilersuit you were expected to turn up to in the next day. That was my most horrific summer , while under the feed line when is was having problems keeping your eyes closed, trying to breathe through your nose and feeling the fibres falling down you arms and back. Just typing this I can feel the burning cuts caused. It really wasn't worth th £5 an hour he were paid...
Love speedfit. It got us out of a bind when the electrician pirced the hot feed down to the kitchen sink during the rewire. As electrics were going nearby I didn't want the pipe repairing. I got the electrician to chase out a bit of the wall on the other side of the window, ran some speedfit down the new chase with an end stop and when I fitted the new kitchen, plumbed it in. I know plumbers prefer copper, but it did the job.

Plumbing always a nightmare, i did a refurbishment in Leeds, they had burst pipes as the house was empty for a while ,frozen pipes led to a lot of leaks, 38 in total, i said to the plumber would of been easier to replace the lot, i was sick of lifting floor boards 😢. Good luck with your project, I would replace replace the plumbing with copper, harder to chew then plastic 👍

The pipes need to be under the lagging that way the heat from down below help keep them safe and lagging on top is extra layer of protection

Well done Vikki - if you are going to redo the loft plumbing maybe wait until you have put the raised walkway in (to accommodate the extra insulation) and run the new plumbing at board height fixed to a batten itself fixed to the edge of the walkway.

I use Yorkshire fittings and make sure to clean and flux the pipes and fittings with wire wall. It's not to hard if you practice on a scrap piece of pipe first.
However I do keep some speed fit for any emergency repairs. 😊

This video more than any other has given me the confidence to try plumbing repairs as needed, you made it look very accessible. I won't be plumbing in any central heating systems but it at least seems feasible to repair things now rather than instantly calling a plumber out of fear. Thanks for sharing the journey.
I think it's good to try to learn these things because it's so hard to get tradesmen to come out nowadays.
Please don't shoot pipes all over the place like this. Speedfit fittings do not like it. No doubt about it some of this plumbing will leak down the line. From a time served plumber.

@@craigevans9617the great thing about plumbing is you can practice. There’s a good channel called got to learn who has a good tutorial on soldering. It’s easy and satisfying once you can do it. Just go buy some solder, flux, wire Wool and a torch and gas. Grab a bit of 15mm copper and a cutter. Once you can do it you’ll realise it was easy. Best of luck.
@@craigevans9617 It's plumbing. Everything should be clipped tidely for a reason to joists/walls/floors. Shooting pipes around in mid air on angles like this is a no no the fittings will blow eventually as there under stress.

*Well done on all your plumbing.. yep whilst the ceiling is down... sort out everything up there including any extra wiring that you will need in the future.... I have seen the steps to ceiling system in a hallway, a kitchen and in a attached garage... so find the best place for you in your home. I call this 'future proofing' for future generations to come. 🙂.*

Loved this update, I'm surprise that there were three (?) points where the pipes were broken in the loft, must have been completely frozen throughout! I just pulled a load of old plastic fittings (Hep2O) out in my bathroom and replaced with copper. Half the Hep2O fittings were jammed on, even using the correct release tool they were stuck. Anyway just chopped it out using the plastic pipe cutters like yours! Plastic pipe is fine where it's out of sight. Headtorches are excellent for working in a loft by the way.
Just having to buy a hep2o remover completely pur me off lol. I don't need that with speedfit and agree! It's not pretty enough for being on show, so I'll have to teach myself how to fit copper for when I want to update everything! I'll have to hunt for our my headtorches.. misplaced them during the move lol
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK I taught myself how to do copper pipe, compression joints, soldering, using pipe bender etc. a few years ago, and was able to do things like replacing a hot water cylinder, and adding a new radiator. I like using solder ring (yorkshire) fittings. You need quite a few bits and pieces but it pays for itself in a short time!

That plastic push fit plumbing looks really handy if you are not competent soldering copper pipes!

I see the insulation in the loft goes under your pipes stopping rising heat allowing your pipes to freeze , put insulation over the top when you relace

Nice work Vickie. I don’t like plastic push fit plumbing, but it comes in handy. Try practicing a bit of soldering, it’s easier than you think, and makes neat pipe work.

The Hep 20 is very similar to speedfit except it has steel inserts and no rubber gromets. Hep was the innovator. Remember the plastic pipes are slightly more resistant to joints shearing off when frozen… just look at your mains tap in the field!
Those copper pipes look like they may have been done with lead solder. The joint penetration and bind is usually crap. Silver solder should take care of that and is probably a lot cheaper than buying all those press fits.
Another great watch Vicky, hats off to you 👏 in my humble opinion I would replace every piece of old pipework you can physically get at, I have a feeling you may regret it at a later date, especially while you have great access via the missing ceiling. We make that mistake in our last property and had the ceiling come down on two different occasions through leaking pipework from poorly soldered joints 😢 keep up the content!
Was thinking the same! Investing in new piping is a lot cheaper than repairing water damage.
I think she's just doing minimal remedial work at the moment while she decides what she wants to do with the redesign of the house.
Sorry to hear that! At this point, it was just quick fixes to get the water up and running to toilet, bathing and drinking, so it bought us time to redesign/remodel the house and working out what new heating system we're going with. But when I top in the insulation and replacing others, I'll be checking again! :)
Oh man that plumbing is a right state! I think for peace of mind in the long run I'd redo the lot, everything in the loft at least. I don't think I'd bother with a heat pump (ground or air) in a build of this age, you would have to do a hell of a lot with insulation and glazing to make it effective. You've got a bit of land and by the looks of it neighbours who do too I'd be going a log burner(s) if local wood is an option. I fitted one in my house as a sole heat source after growing up with the same at my Dads and it's bloody brilliant for the running cost.
I agree. The bungalow has probably got no underfloor insulation, minimal wall insulation, etc. It would be very expensive, time consuming and disruptive to go through the process of retro-fitting everything, plus changing all heating pipes and radiators. And for what? A heat source pump that wouldn't heat the house up very well and probably need solar panels to compensate for the cost in eletricity to power it. These things are probably going to go down the same route as many other new technologies...down the pan. Burning wood is never going to go away. Maybe a log burner with a back burner for heating up the water.
Chances are wood burning is going to get banned in the near future unless in certain categories of property ….be careful what you invest in. They might be ok being rural, but in a town it is not a good bet at the moment for example.
@@dees3179 it's not going to happen any time soon regardless of what headline every online news outlet jumps on for clicks this week. There's no way local councils could police it with man power or funding. We have clean air zones now which might get stricter and more common but it just means having a cleaner burning certified stove. People like me who installed them themselves with no HETAS certificate don't exist other than a tiny wisp of smoke. With the rollback we have had on fossil fuel vehicles etc we will still be installing combi boilers for at least the next 30 years. The 600 quid on my log burner is nothing compared to the 15k on an airsource heat pump. A couple of years and it's paid for itself even if it does become outlawed. I can't afford to have gas central heating installed and run it never mind a "greener" option so it would immediately plunge people like me into fuel poverty. I agree pay attention but with a pinch of salt, investing in any heat source should be a considered and researched decision weighing up it's potential longevity.
@@HouseFairyDIY,they haven’t got heating pipes and radiators to change- they’ve got old electric storage heaters that they intend removing. In other words the ideal time to install the correct piping and radiators they would need.
As a joiner I couldn’t help noticing there’s lateral and diagonal 4x1 bracing missing on your roof trusses.
Some might say well it’s been up this long obviously ok but why not put them in now while you have the chance.
Each truss should have lateral bracing along the node points ie the point where the internal webbing joins ceiling and roof rafters also diagonally along the pitch of the roof.
Surprised that your survey didn’t highlight it.
If you sell the next surveyor May spot it.

Good job Vikkie. Reminds me of my last house make over. Lots of leaks and plasterboard replacement. Speedfit was just starting to appear in the shops so I taught myself how to solder plumbing joints. I Eventually installed my own central heating system and boiler! That was back in the days when you didn't need a piece of paper to say your qualified. 😃😃

TBH its not half a difficult as it looks. Once you get the idea of a flow and return from the boiler and back again its just pipes and connectors. And we can see your a dab hand at that already

hehe... he's a devil for barking his head off!! I never even knew Speedfit did 10mm - just spotted a selection of it in B&Q today!
Well done Vikkie that speedfit is a miracle I can't believe it works so well. I finally got around to sorting out our bathroom, the previous owner was a builder, a 🐄🤠 he got the hot and cold connections reversed somewhere under the floor perfectly tiled! I used speedfit to tap into the cold water supply to stop the toilet giving a hot flush and stop ended the hot feed. The thermostatic shower was a problem as it got hotter and hotter by increasing the hot which should have been cold! I couldn't get into the wall to reverse its feed without major destruction! So I removed the large overhead shower head and flipped the mixer bar over so the feeds were correct. The large head on the flexible connection was adequate and with a new sliding support in we've got a functional shower! None of the doors in the house closed properly either and he undermined the patio and covered it up with decking! Don't get me started on the drainpipes that's one of my next jobs!
This is what he did on his own house! I shudder to think of the jobs he did for other people! You have actually got an advantage with a house that needs a major refurbishment you can do it right! 😅 !
haha... I bet he knew what he'd done wrong as well when he'd sold it (maybe wanted to sell on instead correct 😬) I do love how almost everything needs ripping out and don't have to worry about taking something apart without damaging it before putting it back to how it was! lol

I’d recommend some decent ladders. Just google how many injuries from ladders in the UK. Even a fall from those steps could be life changing. I’ve just bought some Little Giant Conquest 2.0 all terrain - they are brilliant - stabilisers so they don’t tip sideways. Obviously lots of other good ones. Best purchase I’ve made in a long time.

@@TheCarpentersDaughterUKI wouldn't get air source heating it won't heat the house we have it and alot of places are removing it and going back to gas or solid fuel or oil. It takes alot of research if you really want it but you won't have enough hot water for a bath we don't unless we just use the immersion and we had to get a new fan in the garden in 2016 as the other one that was 4 years old burnt out it's circuit board and so it ended up being a whole new outdoor unit

Did similar jobs on our bungalow - insulating the loft etc.
For the walkway I used 100mm celotex (PIR) insulation with 11mm OSB on top. For the rest I've just layered some regular loft roll insulation (it gets up to 400mm in some places so it's a bit of an overkill) and used loft legs XL with some 18mm osb to create lots of storage space.
Don't forget to do all your plumbing and wiring first though as since you board the loft it's going to be a pain to access the wires etc.
As for the loft hatch - I got rid of the old and hideous one and just bought a ready made metal insulated hatch, I think it was about £125, fitted perfectly in the opening and saved loads of time messing about with the old one trying to insulate it (and looks miles better as well!)

If you repair the leak, make sure you run the water for a good while to flush the system to reduce the risk of legionella. As the water has been standing there for so long there is a definite risk.

Great video Mr and Mrs TCD, I've always hated going up in the loft, but last spring ventured up to sort out the energy sapping 3 x 60w bulbs, replacing with those low energy 8w CFL bulbs, now it's super brilliant white instead of dim and gloomy orange and ! Wish you both the best in your future repairs.

I know you probably have already done so but to anyone watching please don't skip the pipe insulation. Cover every single piece you can find including the joints. Every winter I've been out to burst pipes in the loft. Biggest culprit is joints not being covered. You don't want any pipe showing at all. 👍

I never done plumbing in my life. I was not sure I be able to do soldering properly. So I want to go with speed fitting. Soldering very easy as well. Cost wise both r same. My advice is do some research on TH-cam. U will get alot of information. Speedfit do two types of pipe. I choose lay flat over pex. Then I have to use less fitting. I used one rule less fitting on plastic pipe less chance of leak. Watch out if u have rat issue don’t use plastic.

I would really think about doing 300mm in the loft (or even 400mm) but also look at buying Rockwool specifically, the brand exactly. I know alot of people say Rockwool as a generic term but its far better then the knauf mineral wool and the Rockwool is happy to get wet from time to time and mice don't like it.
Thanks! If Rockwool ever wanted to sponsor me, then I'd consider, but due to costs, I've gone with Knauf 200mm to go on top and 100mm for to replace the area that's missing.

Think a wise move would be to live in a caravan on site, nothing is more disheartening that working around your personal belongings. It is after all a building site! There is light at the end of the tunnel ;-)
A-ha, late night pipe lagging. Been there, done that. I just hacked the insulation with a pocket knife though - you were much more neat!

my only advice would be to go over that hair felt pipe lagging with some foam insulation or remove. Hair felt lagging is now only really used to protect pipes from the plaster when they are sunk into walls and does not meet building reg's now and it will also save you money as the hot water does not lose so much of it's heat when traveling threw the pipework. So you may also need to did this to get the grant for the heat pump anyway and yes it's not a nice job being up in a loft doing the pipe lagging but it does bet paying a plumber his hourly rate to do it all.

The grey insulation you used to put over the plastic is the better option for pipe insulation/lagging and you may find that if you look online ebay or similar you can find it cheaper than you can in a DIY store. I think i paid about £14 for 10 meters of insulation for 15mm pipe at 13mm thick (personally I would not go for anything smaller than 13mm thickness) I used this 13mm behind the kitchen cabinet on all the exposed pipework as well as the exposed pipe in the kitchen cabinets. When i redid my bathroom i used 25mm between the joist and the hair felt lagging where it passed threw the joist to help stop any noise. it just depends on what space you have but bigger in the loft is better being an unheated space. Also having the pipes clipped/supported would help a lot with problems in the future as movement can cause joints to fail also so it could be worth looking on the net for Talon Joist clips or even just a bag of Talon pipe clips and screwing them to the joists to support the copper spaced at 1.2 meter apart max for a horizontal run or 1.8 meter max for a vertical run to stop sagging. 22mm copper pipe is 1.8 meters maximum for a horizontal run and 2.4 meters maximum for a vertical run, they are pipe sizes that are carrying water as gas is different large space between clips as its carrying less weight but of course you can go smaller distance between clips that's just maximum set.
The hair felt is not very good at insulating pipes and is now used when copper pipes are buried in walls and floor to hide them as the hair felt lagging has a plastic bag type liner under the hair which stops the plaster and cement from coming into contact with the copper pipe and causing a reaction which corrodes the copper and causes leaks (this why copper pipes that go threw a brick wall should be sleeved with larger copper or plastic pipes), it does also allow some extra space for the copper pipes to expand and contract as they get hot and cool down with out cracking the plaster. It's also used where central heating pipes and hot water pipes pass throw a notch in wooden joist to help stop any rattles or bangs as the copper expands and contracts as it gets hot and cools down.

The close up of the copper joint looked very sketchy - definitely worth replacing what you can get to while it's accessible; as you said a new leak in the night could bring down another ceiling. Fingers crossed...
Thanks! :) It was tough filming up there as well 😆 Once we have better lighting and more boards up there, I'll feel safer exploring more areas. Not keen on the one leading to the old shower, but it's not leaking and we don't use it/want to rip it out.
You might consider just redoing the lot in plastic the joint have probably had it due to the frost expanding

Interesting to see how you tackle some problems I had to deal with when I bought my place. I've only worked with plastic on drainage, all copper for feeds, can those push fittings come apart and reassemble repeatedly? As soon as I saw the damaged pipes and missing ceiling in your earlier video I thought, as long as no structural damage, that's a great negotiating point because it'll put off a lot of buyers and both are really easy repairs, had same in our kitchen. We've also just worked out a leak in our bathroom is coming from the bath drain, really sneaky it was. Don't think anything's gnawed through it as our kitty would have had the little beggar.
Sounds like we definitely need a cat in the future lol. Yes, you can repeatedly dismantle and reattach, which is why I like it 😊

One problem with plastic pipework is if you don't support long lengths they can sag. If the system is not clean, sludge can form and restrict or block the flow. I know, it's happened to me. Obviously well supported and a clean system, no problem. Shower circuit should be seperate from the lighting circuit. 😏
Thanks. The shower was a later addition and on its own circuit (turned out a fuse had gone...probably tripped from the previous flood) and the bulb just needed replacing 😆

Me bought somewhere similar. they were in the loft and under the bath. They came in via a gap next to a 40mm waste pipe from the bath and would go under the bath or up the cavity into the loft. We gathered the insulation and bined it in bin bags the council will collect it for a fee and you can tip the bulky collections bin men wink wink. Vacuumed the loft and bleached it. Then got another EPC that said 0mm loft insulation then a year later got free loft insulation with a grant in the meantime, the loft had no insulation which was perfect for plumbing and electrics.
We also got solar panels for free somehow and now it is EPC A. To get a grant you mayalso need to fit weep vents on windows and fan in kitchen and bathroom.

I would check every single copper joint and replace if necessary or not.
We will be once I have better access and plan on ripping out the dated shower and replacing the pipes connected to it
Nice work, If it was me I probably would have just ripped out all the copper and started again. You dont want to do up this house and have it just perfect only for dodgy pipe to burst and ruin your work. Also, clip as much of the pipe work to joists as you can, espeically the cold main, it can rattle a fair bit. Nothing wrong with hep20 speed fit and if you end up doing the central heating go up to 22mm for the majority of the flow and return, future proofing for a heat pump :-)
As per usual an excellent video from you and a great explanation on how to fit those Speedfit Connections and the Pipe of course, there is one funny thing though, any chance of saying your husbands name instead of the usual 'my husband' 'my husband' etc. Thanks.

You really need to get rid of that felt type pipe insulation and replace it with foam insulation, I've found that every make of plastic pipe is fractionaly different so inserts are either very tight or a little loose
This seems to be a common opinion (and I thought the wood stuff was better as more expensive) so will do soon. Hopefully topping up with more insulation will help too!
And yes, that'll be why I've always been told never to mix and match different plastic plumbing brands

Honestly I would chuck the lot . New stuff is more efficient and you might see more issues as you go along ..get cavity insulation but make sure the electric cables are not running in it .

Cheers 😀 I don't see a problem either. I've seen both plastic and copper plumbing fail over the years and plastic is so easy for the ordinary home owner to do repairs or plumb up a washing machine without the need to hire someone.
