We bought a HOT TUB, but needed to install a gravel base

  • Hi all 👋 A few weeks ago, I talked about how we thought our rose garden bed would make the perfect place for a hot tub.
WELL................................. a couple of weeks ago, we went to a hot tub showroom to check some out and put a deposit down for one. We're really looking forward to a nice deep soak after a long hard day's work of DIY.
But we quickly needed to decide where we were going to install it and the only logical place we thought was the old established rose bed.
So out they have come for our new gravel hot tub base, which I show you how I installed.
    Hope you enjoy watching!

Not overly keen on the idea of hot tubs but then I much prefer showers to baths. Just wanted to ask, is your hot tub right by your front door? I just had visions of you chilling out whilst waving to the postman! 😂

@sharonmc5192 haha.... no, not really. This place is funny. What looks like the front of the house is at the back. The main entrance is at the side behind the iron gate you can see near the hot tub base. We do need to add privacy to that gate though... maybe fake privet hedge trellis stuff

The best gloves are welding gloves you can get long ones that go half way up your forearms, brambles and thorns won’t go through them.

Big fan of gravel grids, i like the sturdiness and the fact it keeps all the gravel in one place. You had a nice flat surface but some sharp sand on top of the hardcore can make it easier to level off again.

With all, that grass in with the roots of the roses, best to put each plant in a big bucket to wash away all weed roots. Then replant after reducing the plant by 50%. Once you wrench the rose out of the ground the fine roots are broken. So to help regrow them reduce all the stress of a large plant they need to support. The rose will regrow within a year.

The maintenance can be a pain but it’s worth it, buy a good water pump and a small drill pump to get the water the big pump can’t get.
Can’t wait to see it in place, I just put ours on the slabs then built decking around it.

Just my tuppence worth. Absolutely soak the rose and leave for 24 hours. Then prune hard. leave about 12" above the root stock (or grafted root stock). Then transplant, water again and feed. By cutting it right back you stop the rose losing moisture and going into shock. It needs time to make the tiny capillary roots so it can take up moisture in its new home.

Next time you get the MOT delivered if you need it get them to swing it over the wall cut the bottom of the bags and boom.

I would also suggest cutting back any old wood to new growth that will encourage the new growth

A concrete mixer. U have the space so why not get a winger deisel mixer. A proper site mixer that will just keep going. U can even use it to wash gravel and make a proper concrete base for ur hot tub. Farm jacks are good for taking out plants and roots. U have a massive amount of work on there. U don’t use a rake for type 1 mot gravel best use a square mouth shovel. The rake takes the bigger stones out of it and leaves the fines behind so u don’t get as much packing.

I’ve always thought that roses should be cut down to about 12” tall when you transplant them. And never to transplant if they’re diseased, or it spreads. I really don’t like hot tubes. But I don’t want even a pool and I live in the desert southwest of the US. The green pond where you planted the roses, what are your thoughts about that? Personally, I’d fill it with dirt and plant something beautiful there. But you might want fish or something. If that’s the case keep in mind if you have large birds of prey, they will swoop down and scoop them up.

Vikkie, I transplanted 3 big rose bushes at the wrong time of year. I was told to get them in the ground asap and prune back hard and I mean hard, very scary to do it. Was sure I killed them but they came back lovely. Any black spot responds well to a milk and water mix spray.

Much a do about nothing . . . Not a fan of hot tubs, but if that's what you want and you're willing to put out all that money for prep, work and the tub then so be it. It just seems there are more important items to take care of in the house (heating) and around the property the should take precedent.
We have a strong feeling this was inspired by TCD's wants ~ like having a boat. You know a boat, that hole in the water you keep pouring money into.🤔

Having a spa is like having a bath you never drain, eww. It's a pot of chemicals, and body dirt and skin.

Don't carry aggregate, that's what wheelbarrows are for. Also, I'm not a fan of pegging membrane as, by puncturing the plastic, you are encouraging the little devils left in the soil to grow. Though, in truth, they need little encouragement. Rocks will do the job until you have the hardcore down.
