- As we wind down for the Christmas period and are about to embark on 2024, I have a festive chat reflecting on my return.
I discuss DIY plans for 2024... an urgent issue we need to resolve before things get any worse, BUT also how we found a shocking intruder when we weren't expecting it...

Yes definitely a shrew, moles are blind and def can’t run that fast, hopefully it made it to safety.
A tremendous labour saving tip is to get Mr TCD to do the work. It's a tip my wife has unfailingly employed!

Don’t forget when you are insulating the loft to leave ventilation at the eves. If you block it then you won’t have the air movement and you’ll get damp. Have a happy Christmas. Dave in Essex.
With that amount of land, you will of course have many Voles, Shrews, Mice etc, I've left half of mine for nature, and I have a regular visit from both a Barn Owl, and Tawny Owl. The Buzzards help keep the rabbits, and we are also now getting visits from Red Kites. Keep your eyes to the skies. I'm also in Lincolnshire.

bps access solutions for scaffold. Flail mower attachment for tractor for cutting brush and brambles. First job... bare root fruit orchard. Second job,. Chicken coop. I would definitely think of diy external insulation see (skill builder), heat pump and solar. Ask Adam from heat geek to pay a visit. You have the land for a small turbine, and/or solar agriculture to generate decent passive income. Ground solar is easily in your skill set. As for boarding loft, forget stilts. Run joists perpendicular to the ceiling joists. Toe into exitsting, ply board on top. Merry Christmas to you all Vikkie
New subscriber here and I’ve just caught up on your new house videos. I have some thoughts to share, and I wish I could come over to help! What a fun project.
Garden: Yes to siting the vegetable garden close to the kitchen. It’s a great place to have some frequently used herbs (parsley, etc.) in pots near the kitchen door. I’d also suggest tearing out at least some of that concrete parking area near the old cottage and putting in a French drain to get the water away from the houses.
House: I’d probably paint the kitchen cabinets for now; paint or use peel and stick tiles or bead board panels over the backsplash for now to brighten it up. Maybe you could move your desks into the dining room or the room with the file cabinets in (when you get the insulation and heating sorted out) and have an eat-in kitchen instead? You can also paint the floor if you don’t like what’s there. Paint is magic stuff.
I love the attic lights you put in. Maybe when you have an electrician into fix the bathroom lights etc., you could have a switch mounted at the top of the new attic stairs and hardwire the new lights to that.n. I’d agree with you that a handrail would be good. Getting injured while taking on a project as big as this is just no fun.
You’re a great inspiration and I love Hans, especially when he sits on your lap, I used to have a Belgian Malinois who did that whenever we went to the vet. 😆

When checking roof leaks insulate between roof trusses , should take at least another 4 inches not the spray foam type
Instead of doing a project per video, why not change to a weekly vlog showing the progress (or lack of!) of the renovation, I watch a number of channels who do that and their view numbers are impressive. You could then cut the clips together of projects and release them as seperate video's too. have a great xmas 🎄

Merry Christmas, wishing you success with all your upcoming projects. We moved in to a doer upper 30 years ago and we’ve still not got it right. My recommendation is to spend half a day with some screws, nails etc. on that summerhouse,
It’s amazing how long they last and are great for a bit of downtime away from the projects. I have one which is 30 years old rescued from my mum’s garden. Oh yes, treat yourself to some trousers with knee pads, you’ll thank yourself when you get older 😀

To add to your vague viewer map, we're in London, finally mortgage-free and most major renovations done, but plenty of work left. That plot of yours would overwhelm me, but it's a tremendous opportunity to provide managed habitat. Great you liberated the little creature, but best to let it go in some dense grass so it’s got cover. Fingers crossed it survives!

Give the loft boarding and insulating a bit of thought. You should be insulating to 400mm plus deep (keeping clear of the eaves to maintain ventilation) and once it’s in you will not have a clue where th’e bloody joists are.
I would decide where you want your walk ways and any storage areas and then install the ‘loft legs’ and boards before you lay the insulation - a bit of a fag to thread the insulation through them but better than the alternative and or falling through the plasterboard. Oh one other consideration - quite a big one electrical cables in the loft - best to be on the cold side of the insulation as much as is practically possible so you really want any electrical work done before insulating.
Thanks for the advice. I'm trying to think of a wooden alternative than loft legs as don't think they look that sturdy. Not sure yet

Happy New Year keep those videos coming. I spent new years eve topping up my insulation and bought some loft ledge truss shelves for my xmas decs, which means you have ample room for the insulation underneath. Shame these arent bigger and im sure with your talents you could improve on the design.

The picture quality in this video was just so much better than the videos to date - you mentioned some new kit at the beginning so I assume this was the first outing for a new camera?! Love your videos and updates... my DIY plans for this Christmas period suffered a setback with a bin fire that messed up the fence I had built a year ago and will require an insurance job to replace the kitchen window, the fact pipes are melted so need replacing. I spent most of Boxing Day suffering with headaches and needing to drink water.
I'd watch/listen to you reading the phonebook Vikkie, your voice is just the sort of calming thing I need after a stressful day. I'm always interested in the thought processes involved in deciding on layouts etc.
