Of course it’s not cheap, but walk into a Cadillac dealership and see what that buys you. I like the exterior of this BMW, but I LOVE that interior colour combination. Impressive. I appreciate your integrity and honesty, when you break down how simple the Brands are and/or have become. It was another great video, well thought out. Thanks.

I drove both the GLE and X5 when searching for my new SUV and there really was no comparison between how the two drove. Hands down the BMW was by far the better driver’s suv. The GLE felt lumbered and disconnected from the road while the BMW is just a joy to drive. And don’t get me started on the GLE infotainment system. It’s just terrible. The idrive system in the BMW is amazing. I bought the X5 with the Msport package and 22 inch wheels and I have been nothing but happy with that decision. It is an amazing vehicle.

Fully agree with you on the ergonomics. The touchscreen fest on other manufacturers mean distracting glare, multiple menus and sub-menus, fingerprints etc. It's good to see BMW still providing the tactile and easy to use shortcut buttons, switches, controllers and knobs alongside the touchscreens,

Save this one, it might be your best. No fluff, no wasted schmooze language. Well organized comparison of the options. As a potential buyer this is worth more than all the other reviews of the X5 I’ve seen. Like you, I’m a Porsche guy, but the price difference, and the fact a lot of my Porsche friends bought x5’s has me looking. Really glad to have an experienced opinion on the tech and all the new suspension gear. Now, if they only had better paint options. Thank you.

  • @HiPlains1

IMO, when BMW revised the X3 in 2018 it killed the need to buy the X5. The X3 Xdrive 30i is all you really need. Tons of room, fast, great MPG's, and overall the best SSUV. The X5 will cost you at least 10K or more USD. Now if you have the bucks and really don't care about money I think the new X7 is hard to beat. For a first year model full size SUV the X7 hit a home run first time to bat. I like all the X series Suvs. But the X3 is the sweat spot for the money. And you can get big discounts. I got 7K off my X3 and paid 47K (MSRP 54K) and it's loaded. Very fun SSUV to drive.

Watching this in 2023 and just ordered and received the new 2024 BMW X5 in May…it’s definitely still the best with new interior and large screen! I love it so much! The quilted seats are a gorgeous attribute as well. So much better than GLE. I love the exterior styling of cayenne, but still love the X5 for now! The m sport and m professional packages are the sweet spot for BMW.

This article is probably too old to get a response, but I love your channel!! I watch all your motormouth reviews! I absolutely love the BMW X5 but have never owned one and I am on the market....Please tell me what year and trim level you feel is the best in the last 5 years for someone looking for a pre-owned X5. I just bought a 2023 Tuscon hybrid (looong waiting list) and I am grateful to score one, but I crave the dynamics and kick of a more powerful SUV, and the X5 has always been on my list. I cant budget a new X5, but would consider an older version. I'd love to hear if there's a particular year and trim level that would be the most bang for my buck.

Request: I always want to know the back seat leg room. I’d love an explanation of how it is measured. I get that these rigs are designed for families but a lot but would four of you be comfortable on a golf weekend? Tell us your inseam length and height and answer that question. I’d also like to know if the back will take four golf clubs; golf clubs plus push cars; all that plus luggage for a weekend.

  • @GooseVan

I think the cayenne chassis is better than x5. It's very comfortable but no body roll. Try the same with x5 on base suspension, you get car sick easily. Cayenne steering also feels much better than x5.
X5 has excellent drive train, better than cayenne.
I like cayenne instrument cluster better, it still keeps the analog tachometer.
iDrive is fantastic but PCM isn't bad at all, but I do miss the 8 shortcuts in BMWs.
cayenne has better driving dynamics but it's also a bit more expensive, not the badge.

Hi Zack. Drove all the above cars mentioned. My thoughts are BMW x5 has great tech and gadgets wasn't a fan of the 6 cylinder engine but that's just me loved the power of the 5.0 but thought the ride when driven faster and harder was a bit soft and floated a bit to much. The GLE of which i own now was nice but definitely leans towards soft and comfort also but the styling didn't grab me and the screen does look like it was glued on and doesn't look seamless! My clear cut favorite was the Porsche Cayenne!! Love the interior and exterior the best and It drove the most like a sports sedan and not an SUV! The base car is OK but the real gem is the S with 443hp and it really moves when you stomp on the gas! It's the sweet spot in the cayenne lineup without going nuts and spending 150,000 for 550hp. For my money I'd vote for the Porsche and It's got a great badge and to boot!

I've driven the new GLE and the X5. I thought the I-drive is a mess when you are trying to go from Apple car play back to Sat. radio or other I-drive function. The GLE is a better looking car with more color choices. BMW offers dark blue and every other color is white, grey, or black! I think the BMW handles a bit better and the ride comfort for the Mercedes is better. The BMW ride comfort might improve if they didn't put run flat tires on all their vehicles.

@@moelo5930 the 3rd row is only useful for small kids or small adults like under 5ft lol but it does come with electric function like recline and fwd/back adjustment which makes it worth it. Although I rarely ever use it, it’s handy when you really need the space for the kids/smaller adults. Plus I mainly use it to transport large amounts of stocks for my restaurant so I do fine the automatic fold down really useful and after almost 3 yrs it’s still working great

  • @VanguardX

Its been well known that BMW has always underrated their engines. A 335 HP engine from BMW is well over 370 HP and the 0-60 numbers prove it. Its faster than the GLE 450. Motor Trend tested the GLE 450 at 5.7s 0-60 and the X5 40i x drive hit 60 in 5.0 with "30 less hp." When you floor it, these engines up the PSI on the turbos for sure and rocket the HP #s up, but this scenario doesn't happen when they do the HP testing for official #s. Its been like this for over a decade.

Exterior styling isn’t too over the top, although I do prefer the GLE’s. Interiors in BMW seem like they are starting to make meaningful changes after years of the same looks in all their products. But it’s still very familiar. Sounds promising.

The new X3 is a bit cartoony too. Or so I thought until I saw the X5 and X7
I think you really hit all the relevant topics with this review. You mentioned how large vehicles have grown. The X3 is bigger than the original X5 and that is reflected in how much space there is in the interior. Although the X3 is not as luxurious as the X5, it is loaded with features and I think is the perfect size crossover. And the M40i is a competent performer is you want something more sporty.
Or wait for X3M, which can be ordered now as we speak.

I really like the new X5. I think the interior is the best in its class and the current iDrive is the most intuitive infotainment system. What I don’t like is that they went away from the traditional rear tail light design which was an L shape “hockey stick”. Also, in the US, BMW is charging $80 a year to be able to use Apple CarPlay. I think that is ridiculous.

Great video! I like the exterior styling of the GLE the best. But I agree with you with regards to the new MB instrument cluster. I don’t like it. With a more traditional instrument cluster, the MB would be the winner for me because the rest of the dashboard looks fantastic. Audi has moved to an all glass dashboard, which I don’t like, either. I don’t like like that BMW has gotten rid of the two rings in the instrument cluster, either; however, overall, I dislike one or multiple elements of their dashboard the least. BMW it is.

You nailed it about Mercedez , they put that ugly panel in front which shows they really didn't put much thought into designing the interior and the same with Audi they need to get rid of the IPad looking screen for there infotainment system. Mercedez is getting cheap with their interior to me is not a good sign even for what they charge for their product

Should you really be comparing X5 with GLE...? In India 🇮🇳 X5 is often compared with GLS & Q7.

Porsche is nice if you like a well handling car but they charge a lot for the little things, BMW is the sweet spot, they will charge a little extra for things but not much

Bigger. While families are getting smaller and individuals never carpool.
    X7, X12, X5000... What next.
    Good review anyway.

I've owned many BMW's in the past. I enjoyed them for their driving dynamics but I now feel they're making them too large. Many families in America are having less children or none at all. I don't understand why our country needs larger SUV's unless it's to make a statement or pack half their house baggage everywhere they go. Good review.

I did cross shop between the new x5 and the new cayenne and I bought the cayenne , I didn’t like that all bmw from the 3 series to the most expensive x7 share the same interior with minor upgrades while in Porsche it’s kind of different with every model

I looked at both & the Panameras , both the cayenne & panamera have the same interior.....I’m a Porsche guy but felt the extra $20,000 for similar options better spent on something else...

MB all the way for me. The previous generation was the pinnacle of BMW SUV styling, while this current version looks ridiculous imho. But looks notwithstanding, I want my SUV to coddle me, I don't want it to feel like a sports car... that's what my sports car is for!! The new GLE is bank vault tight and magic carpet smooth, plus I love how unconventional the dash is. I also couldn't care less whether the lower door panel is hard or soft, leather or plastic. Besides, the 9 speed trans and mild hybrid eq boost (not available on the X5 in any trim) more than makes up for that "short coming". However I do like how BMW offers 4 zone climate and air suspension as standard, it's almost insulting how MB nickel and dimes you for literally everything! I think you get more stuff in a base RAV4!!

Always luv your channel and your detailed informative reviews. I find that a little amusing that you too make mistakes given your native language in English.
Not to offend you, I’m terrible with English grammar (I know this comment sounds just fine) and I make so many mistakes while writing. I keep nitpicking and correcting my content whenever I visit it. Dunno, never satisfied and always find a better/more appropriate substitute for a word here and there.
Again, you do an awesome job. I think I need to learn/understand that people make mistakes regardless of the language being their mother tongue. I too make mistake in my mother tongue, Hindi.

CmanCorporations : Well, at 2:00, he used the word “mimic” while reviewing but captioned “should have said mask, not mimic” to make the correction. Not a big deal but I noticed mistakes could happen with natives as well.
My mistakes are not only grammatical (and I’m working to improve it further) but also vocabular. There are so many words for a single expression in English language that are used in different situations. We don’t have that in Hindi language. Take an example of the word “see”. Let’s say when you actually see a dinosaur in your city, you will say - “I SAW a dinosaur in my city”. But when you ‘see’ that same dinosaur on your TV, you will say - “I WATCHED a dinosaur on the TV”. And there are many word viz., LOOK, GLANCE, PEEP etc - that have the same connotation but are used in different situation. On contrary, we use one word for all the expressions related to “see”. And this problem, particularly is just not with me but with most of us because of the way we think/imagine in native language. A typical Indian English is really funny ‘cause it’s a straight translation of Hindi to English which is not exactly how English grammar works. And you can also find the effect of vernaculars in my English here.

I would lease an X7, because, BMWs become money pits as they get older....Turbocharging + GDI + Weaker Bearings + lots of plastic parts = Money Pit
