2010 Cobalt front suspension death shake at 65 mph!

  • I believe I have found the cause of the Chevy Cobalt death shake at speeds above 60PH. After replacing tires, numerous speed balance sessions, replaced sway bar end links, sway bar bushings, front wheel bearings ETC.... I think I maybe on to the true cause.
    After all those parts were replaced and I still had the vibration at 60 I figured it had to be something with the drive train. I jacked one side up (driver side first) and secured it with a Jack stand. I started the engine with foot on brake and shifted into drive. I released the brake and slowly got up to speed... 40 mph with one wheel off the ground. Everything seemed normal with a mild vibration at a out 60 MPH. I slowed the engine and applied the brakes.
    I then proceeded to the passenger side to perform the same test. When I put that trans in gear and got up to about 30 mph, all hell started to break loose. There was a noticeable vibration and as I continued to speed up it got severely worst! I slowed down like before and applied the brakes, shut the car down. I removed the wheel and started grabbing stuff with the axle being first. As you can see in the video the cv axle is loose on the trans side. The crazy part is this... It's not only loose inside the trans, the entire CV guts seem loose internally and this will be replaced in the very near future.
    It really explains why the Vibration is consistent with 65 mph no matter what tires, front end repairs, rims etc are changed out.
    I hope this may shed some light on this common irritating problem with these car.

    For all that see this information as helpful in pin pointing your problem. At least you now know where you are with your car.
    Thanks for watching.

    Hello all,
    If you have a Cobalt, G5, or HHR and you have an annoying vibration at 65mph your problem is more than likely a worn out trans output bearing on the passenger side. As I mentioned in another video, I replaced everything shimmy related on the front end with no positive results. After climbing under the car for visual inspection I found all this play on the passenger side.
    Shame on GM for putting Bull$@#$ in these cars. Could be a really good car.

    My 07 coupe sounds like plastic shaking when I hit bumps and everything seems tight when I check it. Frustrating

      @CorEdmonds  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most times shaking and banging when hitting bumps could be a bad sway bar link. Vibration at speed is different.

    I have a shake under braking but have new rotors and pads so don't understand what's up. It shakes my steering wheels like crazy.

    • @CorEdmonds
      @CorEdmonds  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, not sure what that could be especially if you replaced your rotors (some times front/ rear calipers could bet stuck and pressed against the rotor which would cause it to warp) . Wobble, wobble, wobble...
      If you hit a pot hole and the belts in the tires are distorted could cause problems.
      My issue was driving at certain speeds and not pressing the brakes like un balanced tires.

      @@CorEdmonds Yeah I have brand new tires just balanced. Rotors are premium and premium pads all new from amazon. They seem to be good solid rotors. Both rotord can't be warped it makes no sense. The only thing I can think is there is a problem with the steering column?. I do have a low speed steering rumble when going over bumps.

      @@simonriddick check your lower control arm bushings, if they're worn out it will cause a shake similar to warped rotors.

      @@ronhipps8273 Ok I will check again. I was under the car only one time and everything still looks brand new. It was a summer only car for all of it's life until recently. But they do look like the smallest joints I've ever seen so could be they get damaged easily. I daily the car so heavy train track bumps and pot holes probably have done something. The car is at about 105xxxkm right now. 65xxx miles.

    Is this a problem with the automatics or manuals or both??

    • @CorEdmonds
      @CorEdmonds  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, my problem was with the automatic. I m not sure if you guys ever noticed with most front wheel drive cars have some type of brace on the back side of the engine. That brace supports the axle going away from the trans to the wheel hub. These cars don't have the brace and because of that... the axle does not have proper support and will cause more load on the transmission bearing (which prematurely wears out).

    • @CorEdmonds
      @CorEdmonds  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Removing the trans, sending it out for a rebuild and while the the trans tech is working on it. Explain to him how the passenger side output bushing is worn out and sloppy on the axle.

    I think it's your tires. I think I have a death wobble in my cobalt. I'm planning on having my tires dynamically balanced. I think most places do static balancing.

    • @CorEdmonds
      @CorEdmonds  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good morning.. I can assure you that it wasn't my tires because I replaced them and it did the exact same thing. You probably have 3 options if your car is having the vibration issues ...(1) Live with it, (2) have the trans rebuilt with new out put shaft bearing or (3) sell the car.

    • @beastumfan

      @@CorEdmonds did you have weights on the out side and inside of your wheels? I think they normally only put weights on the outside and don't balance both sides so through centrifugal force you'd get a death wobble.

    • @CorEdmonds
      @CorEdmonds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try it and see.. I feel like I waisted money on rebuilding the complete front end and balancing wheels for a non positive result. I went through the whole front end and it did not change the wobble. When I bought my used Honda... The wobble was gone.. 😁
