Cobalt, G5s, HHR front end shakes regardless of tire balance explanation!
มุมมอง 4.5K7 ปีที่แล้ว
Hey Guys, your trans is the cause of the shaking front end if you have replaced everything and nothing fixes your car. It's usually the right side inner cv axle to transmission bearing that goes bad. A tranny rebuild with a new internal copper bushing should get you loving your car again. 😊
2010 Cobalt front suspension death shake at 65 mph!
มุมมอง 9K7 ปีที่แล้ว
I believe I have found the cause of the Chevy Cobalt death shake at speeds above 60PH. After replacing tires, numerous speed balance sessions, replaced sway bar end links, sway bar bushings, front wheel bearings ETC.... I think I maybe on to the true cause. After all those parts were replaced and I still had the vibration at 60 I figured it had to be something with the drive train. I jacked one...
Keep me updated
Clean
Thanks.
Thank you so much! I think this is the actual answer to my problem after replacing darn near everything in the front end over the past few years.
You know it truly is amazing, somehow Even though I’ve been searching videos about my Cobalt front end vibration/shake for the past few weeks…I managed to find this specific video AFTER I just got done replacing everything in my front end 🤣😔…brakes, CV axle and seals, wheel bearing/hub, tires balanced, alignment. Now I finally find the video with the real answer. This guy is 100% correct. I noticed after tonight when I replaced my cv axle that the slop in the inner output shaft at the transmission causes the axle to oscillate when rotating. My last hurrah was to go buy new tires. Glad I at least saved myself from doing that. Thanks for the video confirmation.
Did you see his previous video? There's a comment on there with a suggestion for a part from Fitzall that stabilizes the output shaft. I just developed the same problem myself, and I think I'm going to have to try that before finally giving up.
I found out the pins in the inner cv must be replaced to fix it
Good morning.. That could be a fix on your car but, I replaced the axle assembly and it didn't fix my vibration. Shucks, I rebuilt the whole front end including swapping out both control arms. The vibration would not stop 🤦♂️... Car was sold and life was so smooth in my used Honda Accord with 290k miles (work car).
This is exactly what I'm finding out 2. A little late for me but yes. Great video
Changed a lot of parts but it shakes like hell
Check that axle going from the trans to the passenger side. If its super loose than you probably have a worn trans axle output shaft bearing.
I think it's your tires. I think I have a death wobble in my cobalt. I'm planning on having my tires dynamically balanced. I think most places do static balancing.
Good morning.. I can assure you that it wasn't my tires because I replaced them and it did the exact same thing. You probably have 3 options if your car is having the vibration issues ...(1) Live with it, (2) have the trans rebuilt with new out put shaft bearing or (3) sell the car.
@@CorEdmonds did you have weights on the out side and inside of your wheels? I think they normally only put weights on the outside and don't balance both sides so through centrifugal force you'd get a death wobble.
Try it and see.. I feel like I waisted money on rebuilding the complete front end and balancing wheels for a non positive result. I went through the whole front end and it did not change the wobble. When I bought my used Honda... The wobble was gone.. 😁
@@CorEdmonds balancing helped a lot for me. I also ordered two new tires though because one took a lot of weight.
@@beastumfan, but did the wobble cease completely?
My 07 coupe sounds like plastic shaking when I hit bumps and everything seems tight when I check it. Frustrating
Most times shaking and banging when hitting bumps could be a bad sway bar link. Vibration at speed is different.
Thank you for the video I have poured several hundred dollars and countless hours into my front end I think you are on to something I think it's just time for me to sell the car I will say it's a good little car I just can't quite pinpoint this one issue
Glad it helped you! Sometimes these car symptoms need an outside of the box approach. I replaced everything on the front suspension of my car... Smh.
One question did the shake go away if you just slightly turned to the left or right? I just replaced hubs so I know it not them it just shakes when it's going straight .
Is this a problem with the automatics or manuals or both??
Hello, my problem was with the automatic. I m not sure if you guys ever noticed with most front wheel drive cars have some type of brace on the back side of the engine. That brace supports the axle going away from the trans to the wheel hub. These cars don't have the brace and because of that... the axle does not have proper support and will cause more load on the transmission bearing (which prematurely wears out).
My 2010 HHR has the same symptoms, even after replacing the parts already mentioned and ruling out the tires. It would be interesting to know if this problem can be corrected by replacing the associated output bushings. According to some sources, through the use of a special tool, named as # J-41228, the associated "stub shaft and sleeve" (that apparently serves to couple to the CV axle assembly at the left and right trans-axle output points ), can be removed so that the bushings can be replaced, (all without removing the transmission). I don't know if this would be enough to stabilize the shaft(s), thus eliminating the vibrations. Note: Perhaps the associated internal trans-axle output bearings are bad or maybe both the bushings and bearings. Does anyone think that bushing replacement alone might be worth the try ?
Remember, these car left the assembly line driving fine. To get this repaired will be kicking the can (@ vibration) down the road. It's amazing to have a rebuild on a good trans to correct a vibration problem.
I have a shake under braking but have new rotors and pads so don't understand what's up. It shakes my steering wheels like crazy.
Hello, not sure what that could be especially if you replaced your rotors (some times front/ rear calipers could bet stuck and pressed against the rotor which would cause it to warp) . Wobble, wobble, wobble... If you hit a pot hole and the belts in the tires are distorted could cause problems. My issue was driving at certain speeds and not pressing the brakes like un balanced tires.
@@CorEdmonds Yeah I have brand new tires just balanced. Rotors are premium and premium pads all new from amazon. They seem to be good solid rotors. Both rotord can't be warped it makes no sense. The only thing I can think is there is a problem with the steering column?. I do have a low speed steering rumble when going over bumps.
@@simonriddick check your lower control arm bushings, if they're worn out it will cause a shake similar to warped rotors.
@@ronhipps8273 Ok I will check again. I was under the car only one time and everything still looks brand new. It was a summer only car for all of it's life until recently. But they do look like the smallest joints I've ever seen so could be they get damaged easily. I daily the car so heavy train track bumps and pot holes probably have done something. The car is at about 105xxxkm right now. 65xxx miles.
I'm having the same issue in my 09 cobalt 136k miles. I have put new brake pads/rotors, intermediate steering shaft, new tires. the shaking is getting worse. I'll check for this issue. I don't want to do deal with a transmission rebuilt. I already replaced power window motor, throttle body failed and left me stranded, and check engine light for bad sensors. After this cobalt, no more GM vehicles for me. I was hoping to get 200k miles out of this car. the auto stores are starting to not carry parts for this car, you have to order it.
Most cars that has the trans on the driver's side would usually have some type of brace that supports the long axle going over to the passenger side. These vehicles do not have such a support system which causes all the support to be had at the trans output bearing.... NO GOOD AND DUMB!
Did the shaking get worse when you put on the brakes?
Just crawled under the other day replaced so many parts. Still the noise now I know that this is an issue what’s the fix like?
Removing the trans, sending it out for a rebuild and while the the trans tech is working on it. Explain to him how the passenger side output bushing is worn out and sloppy on the axle.
Your kiddin me... I figured a bearing er sumthin. Common issues? Not coverd by warranty is horseshit....
Have you replaced the CV axle yet?
Yes.. It did not help... I sold the car
I have this same problem,I feel it like on the steering wheel though, when driving over 65 or braking,it shakes
Once I get to over 70 it goes away.
For all that see this information as helpful in pin pointing your problem. At least you now know where you are with your car. Thanks for watching.
thanks bro I got the same problem
2007 Chevy impala has the same problem except it starts shaking at 40MPH or when you lift the car both front wheels are SHIMMY ALL tires New,,TWICE did the alignment and balance, I changed the entire suspension wheel bearings, sway bar and links, shocks, tie rods, control arms........ including brake pads rotors calipers First transmission lost all the gears except for the reverse .... I swapped the other one and same problem axle feels loose you can wiggle it with your hand.. Yes its transmission/axle bearings... Nothing can be done about it. Since i am mechanic myself didn't cost me much but I am never again buying GM or over all American cars.... Will stick to Japanese.
Sooo true... Lexus/Toyota for me..
Yep
Thanks for the information
I have exact same problem. I think your right about this problem.
I just went to get this check two weeks ago was told rotors nope its scaring it's shaking when stopped at light & when I let up on gas pedal taking it back in tomorrow
What was wrong
Hello all, If you have a Cobalt, G5, or HHR and you have an annoying vibration at 65mph your problem is more than likely a worn out trans output bearing on the passenger side. As I mentioned in another video, I replaced everything shimmy related on the front end with no positive results. After climbing under the car for visual inspection I found all this play on the passenger side. Shame on GM for putting Bull$@#$ in these cars. Could be a really good car.
Corey Edmonds is there a fix for this without rebuilding trans ??
@@brentshirey8855 yes, checkout fitzall output shaft stabilizer for 4t40/45e
I have an HHR 2007 yeah you have helped me a lot and I'm sitting up here wondering like I can't get to this shake in my car I got my arm control fixed my rotors fixed got my tires balanced an alignment struts and still can't get to the shake
Andrea Matamoros... I'm glad this video can help you. My trans issue is on the passenger side cv joint and the bearing on the trans is totally worn out. The only repair is to rebuild the transmission.
Thank you much....Now I need to make big decision for as this transmission work....
Corey, where were you able to source this bushing from? I'm looking myself and I can't find one.
@@austinhatz which bushing are you referring to?
