Hard to judge if the cameras and lenses were different. The shots from the camera loaded with FujiColor missed focus quite a few times.
From a color/contrast perspective, the FujiColor is MUCH more saturated and contrast-y/ It feels like the Kodak has slightly more dynamic range though as the shadows seem crushed a bit more on the Fuji.

Btw, did you used wide open apertures during the shoot ??

Aperture setting was around f2-4. Would've preferred to shoot at small apertures if there wasn't overcast.

I like the greens on the c200. But if I have to pick between the two, I’ll probably get the kodak.
Both are cheap. But gets the job done

I personaly love cooler colors, for everything, hit up for that depression 😅. So I always pick up the fuji c200, I don't have fear to that contrast and to that green, bring it up.
Well everything go with personal taste, I do mostly nature stuff and street photography, I don't do paid portraits so I don't need that nice skin colors. So everyone has their taste for their needs.
I just love that cooler tones, and it seems like all films tend to have that warmer tones :( We need more cooler films, if I want warmer colors I'll go for ultramax or something, it's like fuji c200 is the only one which is not warm

Initially I preferred the Fuji C 200 for the saturated colours, but looking at the dynamic range of the Kodak Color Plus I totally agree with you. I very rarely shoot colour at 35mm, only about 2 rolls a year but I’d be interested in these films at 120 but shooting landscapes instead of portraits.
You can get negs scanned as TIFF files so you have total control over editing like with RAW files. It isn’t that more expensive.
I know nothing at all about videography, zilch, nowt, I thought I’d point that out before asking my question. The colour on you in this video was out, unless you are very unwell and a bit green. I have no idea if it was your white balance or some colour science you’ve been playing with, only you know that. It doesn’t bother me in the least, I’d rather have good content and especially so if it helps the newbie like this does. But when you post still images in the video does that colour on you being out affect the stills in the video? I know if it’s the lighting you use for the video then it doesn’t, I do understand different colour temperatures and white balance for stills photography I just don’t know if it’s out for one part of a video if it’s out for the entire video.
A good video, especially for the newbie. Very well done indeed. I’m not sure if it’s been released yet but I think like most stills photographers at the moment I would love to a comparison between Acros and Acros II when it’s out. I have a feeling TH-cam will be flooded with comparisons when it is released though. As it isn’t a cheap film and Acros II will be even more expensive I will donate a roll of the original film from my treasured stock. It’s a little out of date, but been well refrigerated.

For me Fuji C200 match perfectly the skintone, so as a portrait photographer i personally use this one; but at the end of the day it's up to you. The two rools has different attitude; what i really hate about Kodak Colorplus 200 is about the blue shadows in low light conditions.

  • @troyom
    @troyom 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I don’t think you can go wrong with either. Both have a great look :) the contrast and saturated colors of C200 are beautiful. And the more faded almost pastel color of gold also has a wonderful feel.

I've been shooting c200 for nearly 40 years. Have a freezer full from the sale for the 24 roll at the end of last year when they transitioned to 36. I have always preferred it for consumer grade. Although might change to only Kodak now that film is on life support.

  • @thisslime2109

I love both fujicolor c200 and Kodak colorplus 200. They're both great budget film options for color but they both have their ups and downs. When I look at Fuji color photos up close I see more grain than I do on Kodak colorplus, but I'm fujicolor it has a more saturated and contrasty feel to it with hard Shadows which I personally like more. Kodak colorplus also has good more true-to-life colors opposed to the more green biased and saturated fujicolor. All in all before watching this video I absolutely loved all in all before watching this video I absolutely loved Kodak colorplus 200 over fujicolor c200, but after watching it I'm starting to love fujicolor a little bit more then Kodak colorplus. But at the end of the day I will continue to use both films as a great budget color film.

Thank you for doing this comparison. I like the way you compared these two films. As you said, "real world" vs a more clinical approach. If I were to choose between the two of these for scenic or downtown tourist type shots, I would pick the Fuji for the contrast and saturation, but in my opinion the Kodak is superior for people pics with it's great skin tones and pastel look. Nicely done!

For personal work, I prefer to overexpose C200 by 1 stop. I find that it lessens the green cast in the highlights and shadows while retaining the punchy contrast.

i think if you're talking about editing the scns to simulate the look fo the other then kodak would be better because c200 has more contrast and loses some detail in the shadows. Adding contrast and shadows to the colorplus is easier than trying to get those shadow details out of the c200. Colour wise they are both great in different environments and ofcourse colour is a personal taste, but pure image quality and dynamic range kodak would be more forgiving and easier to edit afterwards

Great video, Derald. Great comparison. I've gotten great shots with both stocks. I probably choose the stock based on the season. Kodak in Summer, C200 rest of the year. The green wall really pops on the C200, which is to be expected. It also looks to me like the Kodak has a bit more tonal range and shadow detail, which is nice in some scenarios.

I came to hate the C200, although I shot a lot of it, mostly when testing some new-old lenses or bodies, but I have to say in this particular video, the C200 looked better. Otherwise I actually love the ColorPlus, mostly because it is far less grainy than the C200, the C200 looks like an impressionist painting, but not in a good way, when scanned. I tend to overexpose my photos by at least one or 2 stops, and C200 starts to look better when overexposed 2 stops with some yellowish shifts, but still ColorPlus just feels better.
It has been said that Fuji has made their films in a particular way, so that Asian skin tones look better and more natural, and that makes sense, while the same has been said for Caucasian skin tones about Kodak. This is the first time I'm actually seeing side by side comparison with same scanner no retouching and I have to agree, C200 skin tones look better to my eye than ColorPlus. Otherwise I also do like the muted colors of ColorPlus better. I wonder how would those films look overexposed 2 stops in the same environment.

Colour+ for portraits, because the tone curve is softer, with better dynamic range.

I shot my first roll of ColorPlus yesterday having previous shot quite a lot of Fuji C200. And I can say that I much prefer the ColorPlus. And your video confirmed that. To my (subjective) eye the skin tones were better and I preferred the lower contrast as highlights seemed better controlled. The Kodak also looked sharper than the Fuji.

If you consider the cost and couple it with a legendary point and shoot like a contax t2 or the Olympus mju II, it very well may be the most versatile camera system ever coz you are ALWAYS equipped to take great fucking images.

Any suggestions how to learn to properly take Film Fotos? I bought a Canon EOS 1000FN on Ebay and Im using a Kodak Gold 200. Often the pictures are a little blurry (as some in this video). It seems that the Kodak Gold 200 needs a lot of light for a bright picture while this requires a long shutting speed, making the images blurry and unsharp. That’s atleast my theory. I mainly use the automatic modes with auto focus.

Wow thank you for this! Both are great. I just used my fuji c200 for my recent photoshoot.. can't wait to use my ColorPlus 200.. have you tried using Portra 400 for portraits?

Amazing video.I have one question which is not related to above video, Do u think film cameras r addictive because there r lots different film camera's r available & it's makes to buy ? I bought Pentax k1000 & after one year of using it , I decided to buy another one & then I bought the Vivitar V3000s which has a same Mount as Pentax & Nikon fm2n which the internal light metre won't work.Any suggestions would be more helpful.
