The Canon P is my all time favorite 35mm camera!!! When I shoot another 35mm I feel like I am missing out not shooting my P. For the price it’s the perfect blend of form and function.
In the 1970's I was looking around for an upgrade from Ye Olde Leica IIIa. I looked at Leica M-series cameras and quickly concluded that those were "Unobtainium" for the ordinary college student. These were in the days when Shutterbug Ads, a nationwide photographic want ad publication was that era's eBay. I got a complete Canon P outfit, from brown case to clip-on Selenium cell light meter and 50mm f/1.8 Canon lens for about $200. I could use all of my Leica Screw Mount lenses, and I had enough money left for a 105mm f/2.5 Nikkor and a 28mm f/2.8 Canon lenses. Not bad for a discount not-"Leica M3," eh?
I've shot 4-5 rolls of this stuff, and it's really fine, especially for a 'budget' film. My biggest problem (so to speak) is getting my local lab to scan it with a Kodak profile instead of Fuji... it's definitely NOT Fuji stock.
Oh Ribs, you got the best lens for your Canon P. The Canon 35/2 ltm has been literally glued to my Canon P for the last 5 years! It's such a good combo and always delivers, I've also used it as a compliment to my Hasselblad. Have a great summer shooting!
The voigtlander 50mm Nokton 1.5 on the Canon P is super crisp! For people who want a more perfected quality I guess haha, but I would say it’s similar to the 50 lux
Interesting. Maybe once my medium format colour stash is gone I’ll shift to 35mm colour and leave medium format fur black and white. The results look stunning
OH! You got the Japanese Summilux for your Canon P! That lens is DOPE. I used to have one, I got it with a Canon VT. I am thinking about getting another one because I'm missing shooting with a Canon rangefinder. I took some nice photos with that set-up. The Canon P is a little too much for me, though. Gonna probably get a Canon 7. I live in Japan and those are really cheap right now. If not, I'll get another VT. Awesome video as always. Appreciate ya.
Thank you so much for mentioning the Canon P alongside your review of this film stock. I really appreciate that. Most videos on youtube focus mainly on one or the other and this video complimented both the film and the actual camera you used to take these incredible pictures. I have to look into getting one before the prices sky rocket! Thanks again.
These prices for this ("cheap" consumer) film are crazy?!! A roll of Portra 800 is more than 20 € here in Germany now!! When bought it last time, maybe 2 or 3 years ago, it was round about 10 €. Investing in film stock makes way more sense than stock investment I would say. :D
if you purchase one roll of film once per 2-3 years, you make the producers to increase prices to cover its everyday running costs. Buy regularly, and producers will have economy of scale and will be able to keep prices lower, due to high and regular sales figures. And after all, for you in EU, making several thousand Euro per month, does it hurt you to pay 10 eur? How much pizza costs in Germany?
I got about 12 rolls of this Fuji 200 last time I was back home. Bang on with Kodak Gold. Also that lens is nice. I see it sometimes here in Tokyo. I should keep this setup in mind!
Looking forward to getting hold of that film stock , I agree with you about folk jacking prices of old stock , I'll shop elsewhere thanks , there's always means and ways around that daftness.
Love the canon P…I tend to use it with the 28mm viewfinder because my rangefinder patch is off and I don’t believe there is a 28 mm frame line. Solids camers overall! Also a beauty! Also glad to have more film available. That stock will definitely sell a lot this summer if they can keep in stock!
I don't use my Canon range finders as much as they deserve because I prefer to have a modern built in light meter these days. But this 35mm lens is one of my all time favorites and it's still mounted by default on my camera when I leave the house. This lens works great in black and white and it's colors are just beautiful IMHO. It looks like it will be a good match to this new Fuji film from what I could see in your images and I can't wait to give it a try.
I have a 6L and that lenses from that time alight the same way as you show (the Nikkor 50 f2 H.C as well as Canon 50 f1.8) on the other hand, the voigtlander alight normally (the "middle" is centered). Great camera, I have cleaned the rf, so now I am in the process of figuring out if I calibrated it exactly, but I really enjoy using it.
I have seen weird pricingthis year in consumer films. Say, a roll of Porta 400 for 16€, bur an Ultramax for 29€, Who would buy the Ultramax for that price?
@@b6983832 Yep, although Ultramax has come down in price now. At one time, it was indeed 30€ a roll and now it is down to 9€. But Kodak Gold has gone up and Color Plus is impossible to buy 😑
Your photography is so beautiful. I tend to agree with you that this new film is probably Kodak. I remember the old Fuji as being more green biased. Kodak was always more red biased. Your work shown here (translated from film to digital for the video) appears red biased, the greens do not show the saturation of the old Fujicolor. Beautiful Canon (coming from a Leica M guy). Canon lenses are great and you seem to have the best camera to match your lens. Keep shooting and thanks for your review.
I would say it’s almost certainly Kodak film. Fuji has made it pretty clear that they, as a company, are not manufacturing film anymore. Period. They’re done. They’ve killed off all their film stocks. And since Kodak has the color negative market cornered, it’s definitely Kodak film inside. I just don’t understand the angle in doing that. I don’t understand putting a different name on it. Just market it as Kodak film. “Fujifilm” has also released Fujicolor 400, which was pre-release priced at $10/roll in the beginning of May. Now it’s $13/roll and it’s not even for sale yet. I have a love/mostly hate relationship with Kodak and their monopoly. On the camera, I absolutely love my Canon P. I have the 35/2 as well as the 50/1.4 which I HIGHLY recommend if you don’t have it already. But I love the clean lines, the build quality, and the operation of the P. Even the film advance is buttery smooth. It’s a joy to shoot with.
I also own the Canon P with 50/f1.8, and 35/f2.8 and both lenses sit off center. I built this kit separately and I thought something was wrong when lenses didn’t center like most lens and camera combos. I’ve gotten use to making adjustments with camera at a slight angle as opposed to looking at camera from the top. I like many lust for a Leica M but I find it difficult to justify the price when my Canon P kit was put together for less then $500. I meter using a Minolta IV F, sunny sixteen or my iPhone.
I absolutely love my Canon P. I use a Canon 50 mm F1.4 with mine and it such a solid camera. On occasion I will use my 50 mm Summitar. I do need another focal length!
Nice video! Hoping to shoot some color film again, but I still haven't seen the new stuff in my local stores. I'm in no rush though. I love that Canon P. Maybe one day i'll add one to my collection, but that's another 'no rush' situation..lol. Regarding the 2 o'clock angled lens mount, that's normal for screwmount lenses of that era. It's like you said, so that you can see the settings easily with an external finder. My Canon 50 f/1.4 does the same, and my Leica Summitar 50mm does it as well, on a Leica screwmount body with no adapter.
@@ribsy Here in Michigan it is a systemic problem for Rite Aid chain stores. If You have them where you live it's worth checking. Just before watching this video I purchased 3 boxes (9 rolls) of Fuji X-TRA 400 for about $8.30 per roll at Walmart. I like shooting this at 200; while not the pastels of Portra it’s close enough especially at such a low price. Fuji 200 was available via a 3rd party for $40/box, but interesting DoorDash was the cheapest at $29.99 in LA.
I’m not much of a fan of how the film stock look during the day when I’m shoot street as it can be hit or Miss with the colors. But if I shoot this at an event or gig with flash, they come out looking good.
@@TheWutangclan1995 I have shot it while walking the streets, it wouldn’t call it Street Photography. But regardless I like the results best when it’s shot one stop over exposed.
Only Portra 160 has pastel colors. Portra 400 altrough it's also more like 160 ASA realy or 200 max, has very decent colors. For people I prefer Gold 200 that is warmer, has very good exposure latitude with nice details in both lights and shadows, has finer grain vs Kodak color plus, and use to be more afordable like 2 Euros many years ago...but Portra has even finer grain. I also used kodak prophoto 100 but it has a different color mask and most labs don't have that and so the colors and contrast get weird. Superia has horrible colors like shity dark reds and fugly cold atmosphere and shadows, but has fine grain and decent exposure latitude and so I used superia 400 for artsy industrial compositions. Fuji superia Reala has better colors vs regular superia but I still prefer Kodak for people. Fuji PRO 400 has decent colors atipic for Fuji and also Fuji Provia 100 and 400 have decent colors.
I will definitively try the Fuji 200 but I have a freezer that is pretty full of film right now, so maybe this Fall. I have two Canon P's and they are great. Got them both off eBay from Japan. I also have the Canon LTM 50mm f1.4 lens and while it is bigger than the f2 version it is a sweet lens. Would love to find a Canon LTM 50mm f0.95 for the Canon 7 I recently got but don't presently have that kind of money. For me the Canon 7 is just a bit bit easier to focus but I have rarely missed focus with the P model, it just takes a bit more time.
I'm not certain as to whether it's Kodak gold or the fujicolor 200 formula... What I am certain is that it's Kodak made. It has Kodak edge markings and the same Kodak plastic canisters. There are some stores near me that still have the last batch of the old fujicolor 200. All expiring 09-2024. One store just replaced it for the new stuff (oh well...) And the price went from like $19.99 to $23.99, so that's no fun, still, better than what CVS charges for Superia (great film though. If you don't like it, shoot at 320 and 250 or 200, you might like it more.) But I'm slowly buying the last stocks and will probably soon be moving it from my fridge to the freezer for the sake of long term storage of the good stuff.
@Phillip Banes I have noticed that the shadows go a bit more green compared to Kodak gold. It's been a while since I've shot and seen either, but gold's shadows go purple if I'm right... Most of Fuji's stuff goes green, except for provia.
@phillip not sure what you mean by accurately - these are camera scanned and then converted in negative lab pro. most of the photos were on overcast days, so there isn't going to be strong warmth
So indeed about Canon p. Use it with Jupiter-12 35/2.8 but think about replacing it with some Canon as you did. I just don't like the position of the Aperture "ring" of Jupiter.
@@b6983832 The 3M film division was called Ferrania. They are now Film Ferrania, and make their ISO 80 cine film. The plant's smaller, has new owners. The company is still based in Italy!
I have the Canon 7 and the viewfinder is really nice. The camera turns sideways when i have it hanging around my neck and it drives me crazy. I take pictures while walking dogs in philly and I need my cameras to hang comfortably so it doesn't get as much use as it deserves
I've shot Fuji 200 Made in USA... I've shot Fuji back in 2015... I've recently shot couple of Pro400H 120 rolls, and plenty of Kodak film of course. What the difference? Negative mask color. 8 years old Fuji 200-135 looks like old Pro400H and Pro400H I've shot couple weeks ago. While new Fuji 200 more like Kodak. When I've tried to male some RA-4 prints I've noticed, that one filtration settings meet almost all Kodak films, except Ektar... and it was about Y:60 M:50 C:0 (for enlarger and paper I have). But for Pro400H I have to use something like Y:0 M:50 C:20 - dramatically different. And new Fuji 200 is OK with Kodak settings. Most likely it's just KG200 marked as Fuji. I believe, that if Fuji decided to quit film manufacturing, they will share some recipes, technology and patents to make their heritage alive.
I stocked up on the old 200 2 years ago when a local retailer (Meijer) was selling 3-packs of 200 and 400 for $12.99. I bought out all of the stores in my area. I can send you a roll for free if you want to do a side by side.
I bought 19 rolls of Fuji Provia for 14.99€ each about 3 weeks ago. Last ones I could find anywhere. There is practically no slide film of any kind available anywhere in the EU at the moment (end of May 2023).
I get that the old cameras look cool, but after I started using modern-ish canon EOS bodies my Leica has been sitting. You can get a good setup for 200 bucks all in, and it’ll have autofocus, Av, Tv, etc. If you want that stuff in a Leica it’ll cost you more than four grand… Anyways, just yelling into the void, worth a shot on those late 90s early 2000s Canon bodies imo.
Man, I loaded up on the old version of the film about a year and a half ago/ two years ago and have had them refrigerated. I'm down to trade so you can do a comparison!! -- I have seen people do comparisons and, damn ... hard to say it's not Gold. PS I have the same 35 for my Canon L1 .. I LOVE it!!
In terms of Leica substitutes... My wife bought me an Olympus SP rangefinder last year for my birthday and it is baller! No need to spend £3000 on a Leica
Whoever offers the cheapest film I'm buying it. never been much of a fuji person up until recently but my wallet speaks louder than my opinion. Kodak has gotta lower their consumer film prices 🙄
Awesome content! Also, how refreshing to view a video on youtube that doesn't have rapid fire delivery banging your head like sledgehammer with a hundred cuts crammed together with distracting background music. Pardon my rant!
@@ribsy I shot it side by side, two identical cameras, same exposures, same lens copy, same scene, same light, same batch of developer, same scan at home. There is no difference. I still have the original Fuji emulsion in the fridge as well (dozens of rolls btw). USD8.99 is quite blown up. I bought about 200 rolls of the Fuji labeled Gold for USD16.99 per 3-pack at my local camera store - they resell it to walk in customers only at the price they buy it from the distributor. Half of my fridge is full with that stuff at around USD6 a roll (including tax). Doesn't get cheaper than that for color film.
Am I tripping or is Kodak beginning to turn into a little bit of monopoly over over the film market. It seems more and more film stocks are using repackaged Kodak now
Stopped watching when he told us he has no roll of the original C200 remained to compare. Somebody making videos about film photography and having no stacks in the fridge is only a chatterbox.
That looks like kodak color plus, obsolite vintage look, too grainy, too contrasty and too low exposure latitude with too dark shadows, a little warm decent colors. I hated that film for anything, even more so for 35. Fujicolor superia 200 has horrible fugly colors, like shity dark reds and ugly cold atmosphere and shadows, but at least has fine grain and has no stupid vintage look. I prefer Gold 200 for people, even more warm, very nice warm atmosphere and shadows, good contrast, high exposure latitude with nice gadations in both lights and shadows. For artsy industrial stuff I prefer superia 400. Superia Reala has better colors vs regular superia but for people I still prefer Gold 200 even though Gold 200 has higer grain ( but not as bad as color plus...) and fuji pro 400 has even better colors atipic for Fuji, as is also Fuji Provia but provia 100 has only 4 EV exposure latitude. The perfect film does't exist. I would have liked Kodak ektachrome E200 colors but warmer like at least kodak color plus, but with Fuji Provia 100 grain and kodak Gold 200 exposure latitude, and made multispeed from 12 ASA ( like to shoot wide open f 1.7 in daylight @ only 1/1000s) up to 6400 ASA, for 35, 120 and 220.
I hope that, in the future, even if Fujifilm is not gonna produce new film that they are at least producing at Kodak with their chemistry. We already see that Kodak (Rochester) is willing to produce customer specific film emulsions, e.g. Lomography. Why not producing the old Fujifilm formulas? If only Fujifilm is willing to do that which I doubt because... Fujifilm 🫠
@@ribsy Yep, if they are allowed to. Developing a new formula is expensive but using what they already have or getting a formula directly from a client is absolutely possible. I have a hope that Alaris and Rochester are combined into a new (old) joint Kodak. You have one company from start to the finished product which makes a lot easier.

I like shooting this at 200; while not the pastels of Portra it’s close enough especially at such a low price. Fuji 200 was available via a 3rd party for $40/box, but interesting DoorDash was the cheapest at $29.99 in LA.
Great find!! Good for you 💪🏽
I’m not much of a fan of how the film stock look during the day when I’m shoot street as it can be hit or Miss with the colors.
For me the Canon 7 is just a bit bit easier to focus but I have rarely missed focus with the P model, it just takes a bit more time.
yea the P is a great for focusing
Can you do a video about effect film like kono! Alien. Im so lost with this how does it make, how it come out that way!
Plsssss
Not likely 😅
I'm not certain as to whether it's Kodak gold or the fujicolor 200 formula...
What I am certain is that it's Kodak made. It has Kodak edge markings and the same Kodak plastic canisters.
There are some stores near me that still have the last batch of the old fujicolor 200. All expiring 09-2024. One store just replaced it for the new stuff (oh well...) And the price went from like $19.99 to $23.99, so that's no fun, still, better than what CVS charges for Superia (great film though. If you don't like it, shoot at 320 and 250 or 200, you might like it more.)
But I'm slowly buying the last stocks and will probably soon be moving it from my fridge to the freezer for the sake of long term storage of the good stuff.
@Phillip Banes I have noticed that the shadows go a bit more green compared to Kodak gold. It's been a while since I've shot and seen either, but gold's shadows go purple if I'm right... Most of Fuji's stuff goes green, except for provia.
@phillip not sure what you mean by accurately - these are camera scanned and then converted in negative lab pro. most of the photos were on overcast days, so there isn't going to be strong warmth
you have good prices
I have Canon 7 with canon 50mm and jupiter 12, i hesitated with the P when i bought it, but the report says the viewfinder was better
I have the canon 7 also. I think the P is better looking
@@ribsyyes, P looks more compact than 7
Yo is that geemoon funny i just got introduced to him in a paulie vid i watched the other day
yea hes cool!
I love my canon p. Very underrated camera.
same!
So indeed about Canon p. Use it with Jupiter-12 35/2.8 but think about replacing it with some Canon as you did. I just don't like the position of the Aperture "ring" of Jupiter.
Yea the ring on the Jupiter is very annoying
Do 3M still make film? In the UK it was quite rare but apparently was sold as budget own-brand film by supermarkets, camera retailers etc.
They probably used to slap their brand on film made by someone else
@@ribsy 3M made consumer color negative film in the 1990's, but mostly to private labels by retailers. They don''t make any film these days.
Yea the 7 was designed for the big 0.95 lens so it’s kinda annoying without it! Haha
Yep, I saw it today here in SE Europe. Nevertheless, I bought a roll of Delta 100 instead 😊
fair
AW in Uk is selling original C200
I’m no longer in UK
Yea definitely seems like Kodak gold. Especially based on the new charts they put out
I stocked up on the old 200 2 years ago when a local retailer (Meijer) was selling 3-packs of 200 and 400 for $12.99. I bought out all of the stores in my area. I can send you a roll for free if you want to do a side by side.
Nice! A good price
I bought 19 rolls of Fuji Provia for 14.99€ each about 3 weeks ago. Last ones I could find anywhere. There is practically no slide film of any kind available anywhere in the EU at the moment (end of May 2023).
It's kodak gold 200, look at the technical Technical data sheet they're the same
yea ive seen it
I get that the old cameras look cool, but after I started using modern-ish canon EOS bodies my Leica has been sitting.
You can get a good setup for 200 bucks all in, and it’ll have autofocus, Av, Tv, etc.
If you want that stuff in a Leica it’ll cost you more than four grand…
Anyways, just yelling into the void, worth a shot on those late 90s early 2000s Canon bodies imo.
haha i feel you. leica isn't rational but its still cool tho
Remember buying bricks of c200 for $23... man its like a dream lol
haha the good ole days
You mean this entire product in your hand (the canister, film base and emulsion) labeled ‘Fuji’, but actually made by ‘Kodak’ 100% in Rochester?
That’s the rumor
@@ribsy Interesting! 🥂
Maybe this film will be available as an AGFA also... after X-cars comes the X-film
Maybe
Found some of the new 200 at target 8.99 a roll
yup! thats the screenshot in my video
I LOVE it!!
Yea it’s most likely gold!
I wish they bought back Reala.
that would be cool, but will never happen imo
Good News for the Film shooters......!
For sure
the nikon s2 is nice 2
Yup
Did you say Kmart?
Yea - should be there
This some old news or am I missing something?
im not reporting news. just giving my experience
In terms of Leica substitutes... My wife bought me an Olympus SP rangefinder last year for my birthday and it is baller! No need to spend £3000 on a Leica
sweet! thanks for sharing
Then best looking rangefinder out there in my opinion.
Yup!
Whoever offers the cheapest film I'm buying it. never been much of a fuji person up until recently but my wallet speaks louder than my opinion. Kodak has gotta lower their consumer film prices 🙄
totally agree!
15.45 USD*
You are overpaying
Awesome content! Also, how refreshing to view a video on youtube that doesn't have rapid fire delivery banging your head like sledgehammer with a hundred cuts crammed together with distracting background music. Pardon my rant!
haha thanks!
This is not cheap film, this is more reasonable priced film.
its all relative
wOW IL TOLLO SO GODS
Yea!!
According to my local camera shop it’s exactly the same as Kodak Gold 200....except dearer than actual Gold....go figure!
haha yea something like that
My problem's the reverse. I find Fujicolor 400, Gold has been a rare sighting.
It's 100% Kodak Gold, the technical charts are exactly the same
yea ive seen those
$7.99 at Target.
Nice!
Looks like Gold 100
100?
It's Kodak Gold. It's no mystery. Same stuff.
Confident
It seems more and more film stocks are using repackaged Kodak now
def a monopoly
would have preferred most the video concentrate on the title...
Film wipes the floor with digital fakers.
Lol word
Stopped watching when he told us he has no roll of the original C200 remained to compare. Somebody making videos about film photography and having no stacks in the fridge is only a chatterbox.
lol ok
this is old news lol
I wasn’t reporting news
I would have liked Kodak ektachrome E200 colors but warmer like at least kodak color plus, but with Fuji Provia 100 grain and kodak Gold 200 exposure latitude, and made multispeed from 12 ASA ( like to shoot wide open f 1.7 in daylight @ only 1/1000s) up to 6400 ASA, for 35, 120 and 220.
yup
Fuji 200 IS NOT gold
🫡
Not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, want cheap people then go digital and leave the greedy film producers to rot in hell.
na ima keep shooting film
Love my Canon P, the 25mm lens is still tripy, but damn that machine just feels good. @pickerillphotography
yup! def feels great - best way to put it
I hope that, in the future, even if Fujifilm is not gonna produce new film that they are at least producing at Kodak with their chemistry. We already see that Kodak (Rochester) is willing to produce customer specific film emulsions, e.g. Lomography. Why not producing the old Fujifilm formulas? If only Fujifilm is willing to do that which I doubt because... Fujifilm 🫠
Yea hopefully Kodak does this and more!
