I think that although very beautiful, the italian bikes just aren't as easy to live with as the Japanese ones! Parts are more expensive and harder to get too! Especially right now !
That’s true.. I’ve always wanted the diavel 1260s but that cost $59000 here in Singapore where else Honda cb1000r cost $23000. I might actually buy the Honda. Overall is for city riding and nothing overpowering. Way cheaper maintenance for Honda too.
I wanted a duc when I was 16. Then I got one and issues issues issues, Money pit. I ride a XSR now and never looked back. I think it's all these reviewers tricked me into liking "exotic" bikes. They put them on peddlestools but all I wanted was a nice looking bike with good gas mileage and reliable.
Quite why no-one says anything to horse riders about their treatment seems odd. Usually overweight people sit on them....take them to places theyre totally uncomfortable with(roads), make them wear metal shoes, ram a lump of metal in their mouths....hit them with sticks and kick them in the ribs.........and on occasion stick them in a metal box and drive around..to these poor magnificent creatures....imagine you merely saw a dog being hit with a stick....there would be uproar....
Whoops! And on a lighter note....I just wonder Andy whether its easy to tie a small bag on the back of these...just a day bag or trip to the gy,m/shops.....Im thinking of trading a tiger in for one....all the best mate and great videos....than you for all your efforts.
Nice review. Yes the weak point on this bike is that rear shock. The front end is very good and those brakes are fab. A lot of people change the rear shock for something like a Nitron or K-Tech fully adjustable unit suited to your weight and that transforms the rear behaviour and then you have real weapon.
Those roads look amazing, summer in the UK seems so far away, fingers crossed next year this C19 nause goes away and Europe road trips become possible again.

Great Video mate! Talking about feeling more planted and sharper steering, i'll agree with you 100% that the tyres make a huge diff. I've had Brigdestones Battlax S21's and now i got Michelin Pilot Road 5's. Honestly the difference is just huge, i much prefer the Bridgestones in every single aspect except the rain. The confidence you get as you lean over more and the softer compound on the edges is so sticky, just amazing. I also think the sharper tyre profile makes a huge difference. Keep up the great work, awesome review!
I just had battlax s22 on ninja 1000 sx. Very sticky, I didn’t ride in the wet so much but didn’t notice them to be bad. I now have some T32s and starting to trust them after 400 miles. The first corner out of the shop was like an ice rink and made me a little cautious for a 100 miles. I’d love to hear more thoughts on tyres that are grippy in wet and dry but last longer than my s22 - 2900 miles of which I did half

The fuel mapping is on purpose weak in the midrange for EPA testing and Honda claims for the "hit" feeling. An ECU tune can really get you lots more area under the torque curve.

@@AndyManCam I've noticed that you turned your handlebar forward as I've done on my MT09. More feel from the front end when I did that for some reason.
I have the exact same side panniers for my cb1000r and am having a slight issue with the bags touching the turn signals. Are the turn signals slightly larger on the U.S. models of this bike? I thought is may be a U.S. regulation difference between the U.S. and euro models.

I was out of my lane on purpose. I use the entire available road in order to maximise my forward visibility. If you’re not doing the same, i would suggest that you need to practice your cornering.

I tour all over Canada and the US on my 2015 CBR1000RR and it too has been a delight. Certainly lacks the gas range that my FJR had but I'm learning to live with it. I typically hit 150 miles ( about 240 Km's ) when the reserve light comes on. I got so accustomed to the FJR after 15 years that I mounted FJR hard bags on the CBR. That, plus a small tail bag, are just about perfect storage for long trips. I would love to try the CB1000R but the lack of front plastic, even a little bit, would be a real downside for me. Generally though, I think your experience has been pretty close to mine. Well done.
Most excellent CB1000R video review on TH-cam- I've watched them all. Easily the most enjoyable and detailed. Makes me even more comfortable with my upcoming 2021 CB1000R purchase. In regard to weight-- Do you ever feel uncomfortable with maintaining or negotiating balance/ turns/ maneuvers at any speed or degree while having a passenger? As well as solo? Thanks!
Cheers Will! Happy to hear it mate! I’m afraid I’ve never had a passenger on the bike. It’s not something i do very much. If it helps though, the bike feels lighter to maneuver about than the FZ1 did, despite being within 10kg of the same weight.
On longer trips i actually found it very uncomfortable on the wrists. After a two week trip to Norway, i had to sell the bike. Lovely to ride, but it nearly destroyed me on that longer ride ‚
You have mentioned rear shock. I defats road miles on mine. Fitted a map rear shock in May this year, transformed the bikes handling , rear end grip , mid corner stability and corner exit. Highly recommend swapping out the standard rear shock as the difference it makes is huge.
The rear shock is definitely on my list as the first real upgrade to be made to the bike. I've heard many people saying that with a better bouncer, the bike REALLY comes alive!
Funny you should say that! They were actually swapped out very shortly after this trip! As was the Mivv endcan because I realised that it was the cause of the increased vibrations.

In Australia most of the major cities are fine. Once you leave them they turn to rubbish. I live in the country and most black top is worse than the dirt roads.
Hi Andy, greta review. Honest and to the point, love it. If you want an extra couple hours before your arss gets numb try a pair of 'Moto Skiveez', i bought a pair and saved me £300 on a new seat, they a worth every penny. They do make you feel like you have poo'd yourself when your off the bike but the extra comfort when riding is brilliant. They are like padded shorts that cyclist wear but made for motorbikes, worth checking them out. I highly recommend, one of the best bits of kit i have bought for my bike ;)

That was excellent mate :) I think you underestimate your own riding a bit. Your mate on the MT10 might like to twist the throttle between corners but I doubt you have any trouble keeping up.. Anyway, glad you’re loving the bike, pity about the bars.
And the bars are changed out!! Agreed with your comment, he can sure keep up with most in the corners, remember the Nurburgring - I'm sure he was being polite and minding his P's and Q;s!
great vid mate, totally agree with what you said, did love mine but couldn't live with that bouncy cheap rear shock, found a deal on a 2019 Super Duke R and im very happy and no more getting chucked out of the seat over bumps, but all in all the CB is still I great bike that I would recommend to anyone, just get some good tyres fitted and invest in a £500 rear Nitron shock, cheers, G-man
Thanks G'Man. The Bridgestone tyres were night and day against the Dunlops that were on the test ride bike. And now the Avon Spirit ST's that I've got on are proving very useful too! Agreed on the shock though. I think I'll be sorting something out with that next year. Too boingy! Enjoy that SDR! Cheers!
Rear shock and cruise control (not possible dont think)......Honda build quality and reliability always top notch.... Sure the 24 models prolly will have updates
Sure cruise control is possible. It’s possible on all throttle by wire bikes. The shock is also an easy switch. I changed mine for a Wilbers and the bike was vastly improved. As for the build quality, i have mixed views. Mechanically, it seems they’re as good as ever. But the finish on mine was awful. Paint falling off the engine, soft paint on the tank, corroding engine casing and random weld spatter on the frame. This will be my last Honda.
Anyone can open that luggage zipper with just a pencil, so the locks are kinda a waste of time if you really worry about thiefs. But I guess it keeps most "nosey" people away.
I am listening to your report on the Honda. I have ridden a few hondas as work bikes and pleasure bikes. Only the 96 blade that I had was at all interesting, maybe thay was the 16" front wheel. I have an FZ1N, and agree the fueling is a but lumpy, but can be dialed a bit. The gearing is also too tall, not unusual for Yamaha, a sprocket change can sort that. Perhaps like Ducati, the Yamaha is designed to have a smaller front sprocket. When you are talking about getting the bikeeant over, I had some insecurity with my FZ1 when I first got it. Now I have dialled in the suspension (I can not recommend getting any bike suspension set properly, if nothing else get the SAG sorted) and put on a set of Dunlop Roadsmart 3, I have the bike where I want it and am happily pushing harder. I am now so confident that I have started to peel the front even though it is a touring tyre (by the way if you have not trued a set I would recomend them highly). I do totally agree with you regarding the comfort though, I have had my seat adjusted, raised 1cm which helped a bit but still sore after a few hours. Anyway, I am glad you are enjoying your new bike, wish it sounded a bit nicer. Ine last thing, my brother once fell off when discovering a spill of cider slops in France, fortunately it was only a small off and not a total fruit off.
The FZ1N is an awesome bike, no doubt. I was a bit restricted in that here in Germany, a sprocket change has to be tested and approved by the TÜV people (€€) and that ECU remapping is essentially illegal for road use unless it's an approved map (€€€€). Otherwise I could have done a lot more to make it perfect. I totally agree aswell that the tyres play a huge role. Larger than many people realise. Good rubber can make what seems like an uninspiring bike into a carving weapon! Never tried the Dunlops, but I'm sure I'll get round to them one day. At first I thought you were taking the pith about your brother's off, then I realised that it was berry much a true story! Cheers Duncan! Keep on enjoying that Yam!
Ahhh of course the German legislation, I would not have thought about that. There is a no mods rule hete, but they don't look too closely fortunately. As yoi pointed out in this video uoi current boots are shedding tread depth faster than loosing weight after a suspect burrito. When I was working (riding all day, everyday) on motorcycles in London and the south east I first fitted a set of dunlop roadsmart tyres. That was tje first generation, they were wonderful. I looked at the road 5 as you were such a big fan, during my online reseaech I heard some slightly concerning reports on them being puncture prone and not too brilliany on super hot days. We get a few of them, it is still hitting 30+ now. I then recalled my favourite Dunlops and felt silly foe not having them in my mind before. To my joy a set of roadsmart 3 where half the price of the road 5, even better is tye fact they have only got better to ride on. I would heartily recommend them for you, confidence inspiring in all conditions, excellent feedback front and rear and very stable in all temperatures I have ridden in so far. In addition to that you can expect excellent mileage (Road 5 lifespanesq), and maybe there as here available for a great price. Ride safely, I guess winter will be decending hard in your patch soon. Take it easy.
Sadly the German rules make everything a little bit more complicated and expensive. But at the same time it means that you can buy aftermarket parts with confidence that they've actually been tried out on your bike! Plus you can be confident that (mostly) all the other bikes out there are in good order. It must be about time for Dunlop to bring out the Roadsmart 4.....
Quick comment on your tyres... Road 5s and S21s have very different profiles, so to scrub right over to the edge of a Road 5 rear needs far more lean than with the S21. Plus, if you're hanging off less on the Honda you'll naturally be leaning over more for a given corner speed anyway. Nice review though Andy, and a cracking road trip 👍
Hey Andy, Greetings from Canada! I'm considering pulling the trigger on a CB1000R, and these touring videos have helped me narrow this bike to one of 2 choices. My question is, would this be a feasible choice for short touring with a pillion, such as a week, 10 days etc? Also, would heavier bar ends not help with the vibrations in the bars? My only real concern is during highway speeds, the buzzing might be off putting for future trips that might require long(ish) hwy stretches. Love your vids!! Excellent work!! Cheers Rob
Hy DC44! Sadly I have no experience with a pillion on this bike. Not one bottom has been placed upon that rear perch! With my panniers, there is definitely not enough room for a pillion to put their feet properly on the pegs though. Obviously other panniers would likely remedy that. As for the vibrations, they're more than just in the bars. At the buzziest points, it comes through the seat, pegs and (if I should happen to touch them) the engine bars too. I firmly believe it's a situation that can be remedied by sorting the lean fuelling out (The Boosterplug has helped a little, though not entirely). But yes, at stock, it is a little annoying on long highway stretches. It is much better also, with the stock end can back on though.
Great review, very purpose driven. Will those panniers carry a full face helmet? I commute to work and stow all my gear in my factory VFR800 hard bags. The VFR has been near perfect for everything I do, but strangely as I get older(mid 50's) I crave a little more grunt exiting the corners😎. The CB is on my short-list to test. Cheers.

Yes you can tour :) I've just scored 45000 km, including some 3000+km trips (Croatia, Romania, Austrian and Italy Alps) and I do agree - if you want ride naked bike long distance then CB is goo enough for that. Indeed, the stock D214 are crapy, in my case I've switched to Pirelli Angel GT II - what a change. What chain oil-gadget do you use?
Yep. It’s a weapon! The stock tyres are terrible (unless you’re lucky enough to get the Bridgestones like i did) and the rear shock is begging to be upgraded, but it’s such a joy to ride in the bendies! I don’t think that false neutral is your fault, I have the same issue and I’m riding bikes for 24 years now, had 7 different bikes thru a years and never had an issue with false neutral before, but with CB1000R (bought mine 2018 November) I get it at least 5 times a year and sometime really scary, when you go max acceleration than hit false neutral …. than engage a gear and wheelie …… brrrrr !
Great stuff Andy, these are one of my favourite bikes and I currently own an fz1n 2007 , the only thing stopping me getting one was the bhp and the so called lack of power compared to it's rivals , so does it live up to the bad hype poeple say or is it a myth when riding roads, and if you had a choice between the cb1000r , mt10 , or bmw s1000r . What would be your choice if you were taking a passenger all the time too , 👍🏼👊🏼😎👌🏼
Thanks mate! I have never felt that it feels underpowered. I utterly love the power delivery and it feels way more torquey at the low end than my FZ1 did. I could be remembering it wrong, but the feel of the engine was extremely similar to the S1000R i rode in the Alps a while ago. Obviously the MT10 motor was a bit more grunty and exciting, but the fuelling (back then at least, before they fixed it) was too jerky and abrupt for me. Also the styling wasn’t my cup of tea and the CB1000R just grabbed me. It’s got it’s shortcomings, but it’s still my favourite thing out there right now.
Hi George! I'm 1.92cm. I have had my seat raised up by 3 cm and now it'S very comfortable. So probably just right for you. Although everybody's idea of comfortable is very different!!
I tour on my z900rs and have some similar troubles but this bike sounds so wonderful I can't help but think I'd mind them less on this. Love the Z but want a bit more beef and this thing just looks sexy

“Uncomfortable right wrist”..... 🤣🤣🤣. All joking aside I fitted a R&G tail tidy to my CB1000r for exactly the same reason, so much easier to adjust the chain.
It comes to the best of us! 😉 I'm not really sure what to do, as I do really like the low mounted number plate! There has to be an aftermarket alternative somewhere! Otherwise I'm going to have to get the Dremel out...

There’s a plastic wrist save that you fit on the throttle to give your hand a rest , it’s only cheap and I can’t remember what it’s called but it’s very good.

I'm 57 and I find it's hard after a while oh and i just fit oxford heated grips ready for grim winter on vstrom who would of thought handle bar grips glue was so good at sticking your fingers together 😂😂😂

Im not sure why you're having the trouble with chain adjustment. It was a bit fiddly for me to set the correct length, as with that special tool you need to move it in slight increments, for which I figured you need to mildly hit the handle in the correct direction rather than constantly pulling. Otherwise, I didn't find the rear fender arm being too much of a nuisance when undoing/tightening the holder nuts.
I want to bump the power a bit but otherwise thats not a bad looking ride! Thanks for the tip about the tail tidy though lol quite the convoluted mess for the sake of adjusting the chain...
TBH I’ve never felt the bike is underpowered. I can’t see why i would ever need more. It’s just numbers on paper. I’ve ridden faster than far more powerful machines without breaking a sweat. You’ve got to go with what works for you though! It is a good looking ride though! Cheers!
It’s not exactly long term, but the only quality issue i have so far is that the paint is awful. It’s worn off on several places on the underside of the engine and also the tank has been chipped and scratched in a few places by things that really shouldn’t have been able to damage the paint. Protection is vital! Otherwise it’s so far doing very well.
Think it takes a good tour to fully get to know a new bike, only then do you get a good feel for it. Need to get past that, oh look at me on me new bike you get on short rides. Seems the only thing your new ride was missing on this tour was aircon! lol
I totally agree Mark. I thought I knew this bike before, but discovered a few extra idiosyncrasies during this trip. I'm a few steps closer to making it perfect for me now and a lot closer to know the bike inside out! Aircon would be nice though....

For anyone considering a CB1000R, this is the definitive TH-cam channel. I don't like the panniers at all. Hepco & Becker Orbit for me. Great tank bag. Ditto the screen-thingy. Fantastic video.
I know the ergonomic isn’t exactly the same but in 1990 I made a trip from Quebec Canada ( east coast) to Malibu California, witch is a trip of around 7 days at normal speed , on a Kawasaki ninja 750 1987 and one of the thing that made me laugh all along was the so many times that I pass a big rigs and when they saw the plate on my bike and where I was coming from they always blow their horns with a thumbs up, for dedication as on how it must not be comfortable for such a long rides. But If I just had the money to do it, I would have try to go to the end of the world on my bike , it was my second bike after my FZ 750 , but when you really have the passion on bikes your on-board with many kinda tortured things. 😂😂😂😍👍👍😍😍
@@AndyManCam that’s where the difference is between someone who see’s bike as a mode of transportation, and the ones who really got the passion of it, depending on where you lives of course, but I’m from Quebec where we have 4 seasons and when it’s start to get cold you will see many bikers stored their bike for winter, wile theirs a few exceptions who will jump on the bike instead of the car, even when it’s beginning to snow........ just saying when I bought my first bike ( witch was used, and took me like forever because of the lack of moneys ) it was the 14 of April 1988 and I went with one of my buddy who had one for more than a year before I got mine so I was counting on his experience if something was wrong and I didn’t notice, but strangely even for this dates, it started to snow, so my friend suggested me to buy it but leave it there for the time we got back to get the trailer to pick it up later, but when you’ve wait so long and works so hard to get what you desired the most, your not gonna let a little snow stop you, so I got on it and took off with it, but the snow just keep falling down harder and harder so much that for the last half of the ride home, I literally had to let my feet dragging on the grounds going really slow as it was so slippery, but the whole thing is probably why even today and with the 3 sévères head trauma that made me lost some memories, but I remember that day, and that even with the snow I couldn’t have been more happy, of course everything’s my fault and now I’ve been so reckless with bikes that I had a few extremely serious crash that left me kinda half human and half TERMINATOR, but I probably worth way more because of all the titanium parts in me, but I wish I could but physically I can’t rides anymore, after only a 10 minutes ride the pain is so excruciating that I cry like a baby, and for those who are gonna say I’m a woos , let’s just say that I broken a leg in the pass and I just rubbed it a bit and continued walking on it, of course I was limping but I’m pretty sure many would have stayed down. But for the Quebec Canada theirs laws on when you can or can not rides because of colds and snows, and it’s always the dates that stop me because I was riding until the temperatures drop below zero, like I said to many who told me I was crazy, hey it’s not worst than those who rides snowmobile. And I think it’s a pretty good way to see who as the passion of riding. 👍👍👍👍👍
Great review always remember when in Europe to use premium fuel as it has 5% ethanol same as uk. The cheaper fuel has 10% ethanol and no matter which bike I rode in Europe always felt the bike rattled and vibrated more with this fuel.
Most places in Germany have 5% in the normal stuff. You have to choose to buy the 'Super E10' to get the 10% stuff. Not sure how much is in the premium stuff though.
Octane rating has nothing to do with the ethanol and E10 is actually 95 octane, just the same as the E5 stuff. It just has more ethanol and so therefore burns slightly cleaner but with the tradeoff of having slightly lower energy.
Really bugs me when TH-cam riders have to enunciate what they say, with their left arm. If someone or an animal stepped out it would take at least a whole second longer before the rider could react. However no, there is Mr I am so Suave/Cool flapping his arms around while driving through towns/residential. (Even the both hands off in a residential area.)
The brakes are on the right hand/right foot. Although sure, having the left hand off the bars isn’t really the best setup for hard braking, most of your body weight in any braking situation should be transferred into the tank with your thighs. The handlebars are there for steering. They’re not there for leaning on. I can brake pretty hard without putting any weight on to my arms. I know this because i do it every time I brake hard into a corner. By gripping the tank with your legs, the force of your body’s mass being slowed acts upon the bike at a lower and more centralized point and therefore creates a more stable braking situation. It also teaches you to keep your weight low and rearward which furthermore stabilizes the braking by reducing the tendency for the rear wheel to lift. The fact that you see the idea of braking without both hands firmly gripping the bars hints to me that this is all news to you. I’m not saying that it’s not better to always have both hands on, but if you NEED your hands on the bars to stop, you’re doing it wrong.
I know you like the fueling and this is an older video, but are you ever considering the booster plug for this bike? I just installed one on my '17 versys 1000LT. I ran the bike in the garage for a few mins to make sure I didn't mess anything up during the install. I have noticed a much stronger idle and clutch engagement. I haven't ridden it yet but hope it will help with the rough low end and snatchy throttle at the low revs.
Funnily enough, I've already got one in. Haven't made a vid yet as I'm still testing. Sport mode is definitely a bit smoother and the vibes are a bit reduced.
@@AndyManCam Keep an eye on places that sell them, especially eBay. I bought the S110 and S111 for half price brand new, caught them in a sale. The whole kit was on my Kawasaki ER6-F, and now it's on my Honda CBF1000F ( same base engine as your CB1000 😁). Easy to swap between bikes, and the power hub just stays in the tank bag. Wouldn't be without it now, especially as the power socket on the handlebars is so discreet.

Thanks mate! Yeah that was a lot of fun. Sadly I’ve actually ditched the Honda now. I wasn’t happy with the quality of finish as lots of paint was merrily falling off the bike. Also Honda’s lack of interest in making things right without a fight put me off the brand for good.

As long as it's got 2 wheels and the seat isn't a razorblade, the only thing up for grabs is how long it's going to take! But in the most beautiful areas, slower is probably better!

I’ve seen another one in person that has the same bad paint and heard of many others online. I think quality control isn’t what it used to be at Honda. The CB will definitely be a lot more comfortable for you then!

That’s true.. I’ve always wanted the diavel 1260s but that cost $59000 here in Singapore where else Honda cb1000r cost $23000. I might actually buy the Honda. Overall is for city riding and nothing overpowering. Way cheaper maintenance for Honda too.

I wanted a duc when I was 16. Then I got one and issues issues issues, Money pit. I ride a XSR now and never looked back. I think it's all these reviewers tricked me into liking "exotic" bikes. The paint is pretty weak, but as long as you keep it clean, the magnetic tank bag hasn’t marked the tank at all. 👍🏻

Quite why no-one says anything to horse riders about their treatment seems odd. Usually overweight people sit on them....take them to places theyre totally uncomfortable with(roads), make them wear metal shoes, ram a lump of metal in their mouths....hit them with sticks and kick them in the ribs.........and on occasion stick them in a metal box and drive around..to these poor magnificent creatures....imagine you merely saw a dog being hit with a stick....there would be uproar....

Nice review. Yes the weak point on this bike is that rear shock. The front end is very good and those brakes are fab. A lot of people change the rear shock for something like a Nitron or K-Tech fully adjustable unit suited to your weight and that transforms the rear behaviour and then you have real weapon.
I'l definitely be swapping out the rear shock at some point. Hopefully sooner rather than later!
Those roads look amazing, summer in the UK seems so far away, fingers crossed next year this C19 nause goes away and Europe road trips become possible again.

Great Video mate! Talking about feeling more planted and sharper steering, i'll agree with you 100% that the tyres make a huge diff. I've had Brigdestones Battlax S21's and now i got Michelin Pilot Road 5's. Honestly the difference is just huge, i much prefer the Bridgestones in every single aspect except the rain. The confidence you get as you lean over more and the softer compound on the edges is so sticky, just amazing. I also think the sharper tyre profile makes a huge difference. Keep up the great work, awesome review!
Yeah those S21s were super sticky! Shame they didn’t last very long! I’ve not tried the Michelin’s on this bike yet, but hopefully will at some point.
I just had battlax s22 on ninja 1000 sx. Very sticky, I didn’t ride in the wet so much but didn’t notice them to be bad.
I now have some T32s and starting to trust them after 400 miles. The first corner out of the shop was like an ice rink and made me a little cautious for a 100 miles.
I’d love to hear more thoughts on tyres that are grippy in wet and dry but last longer than my s22 - 2900 miles of which I did half
I have had very good experience with Michelin Road 5‘s and Avon Spirit ST‘s.

The fuel mapping is on purpose weak in the midrange for EPA testing and Honda claims for the "hit" feeling. An ECU tune can really get you lots more area under the torque curve.

I have the exact same side panniers for my cb1000r and am having a slight issue with the bags touching the turn signals. Are the turn signals slightly larger on the U.S. models of this bike? I thought is may be a U.S. regulation difference between the U.S. and euro models.

I was out of my lane on purpose. I use the entire available road in order to maximise my forward visibility. If you’re not doing the same, i would suggest that you need to practice your cornering.

I tour all over Canada and the US on my 2015 CBR1000RR and it too has been a delight. Certainly lacks the gas range that my FJR had but I'm learning to live with it. I typically hit 150 miles ( about 240 Km's ) when the reserve light comes on. I got so accustomed to the FJR after 15 years that I mounted FJR hard bags on the CBR. That, plus a small tail bag, are just about perfect storage for long trips. I would love to try the CB1000R but the lack of front plastic, even a little bit, would be a real downside for me. Generally though, I think your experience has been pretty close to mine. Well done.
Most excellent CB1000R video review on TH-cam- I've watched them all. Easily the most enjoyable and detailed. Makes me even more comfortable with my upcoming 2021 CB1000R purchase.
In regard to weight-- Do you ever feel uncomfortable with maintaining or negotiating balance/ turns/ maneuvers at any speed or degree while having a passenger? As well as solo?

Cheers Will! Happy to hear it mate! I’m afraid I’ve never had a passenger on the bike. It’s not something i do very much. If it helps though, the bike feels lighter to maneuver about than the FZ1 did, despite being within 10kg of the same weight.
How do you find the riding angle over long distance? I took your advice and test rode one, and found the ride angle to be very sports-bike like.
On longer trips i actually found it very uncomfortable on the wrists. After a two week trip to Norway, i had to sell the bike. Lovely to ride, but it nearly destroyed me on that longer ride ‚
You have mentioned rear shock.
I defats road miles on mine. Fitted a map rear shock in May this year, transformed the bikes handling , rear end grip , mid corner stability and corner exit. Highly recommend swapping out the standard rear shock as the difference it makes is huge.
The rear shock is definitely on my list as the first real upgrade to be made to the bike. I've heard many people saying that with a better bouncer, the bike REALLY comes alive!

If you want an extra couple hours before your arss gets numb try a pair of 'Moto Skiveez', i bought a pair and saved me £300 on a new seat, they a worth every penny.
They do make you feel like you have poo'd yourself when your off the bike but the extra comfort when riding is brilliant.
They are like padded shorts that cyclist wear but made for motorbikes, worth checking them out. I highly recommend, one of the best bits of kit i have bought for my bike ;)

I think you underestimate your own riding a bit. Your mate on the MT10 might like to twist the throttle between corners but I doubt you have any trouble keeping up..

great vid mate, totally agree with what you said, did love mine but couldn't live with that bouncy cheap rear shock, found a deal on a 2019 Super Duke R and im very happy and no more getting chucked out of the seat over bumps, but all in all the CB is still I great bike that I would recommend to anyone, just get some good tyres fitted and invest in a £500 rear Nitron shock, cheers, G-man
Thanks G'Man. The Bridgestone tyres were night and day against the Dunlops that were on the test ride bike. And now the Avon Spirit ST's that I've got on are proving very useful too! Sure cruise control is possible. It’s possible on all throttle by wire bikes. The shock is also an easy switch. I changed mine for a Wilbers and the bike was vastly improved. As for the build quality, i have mixed views. Mechanically, it seems they’re as good as ever. But the finish on mine was awful. Paint falling off the engine, soft paint on the tank, corroding engine casing and random weld spatter on the frame. This will be my last Honda.
Anyone can open that luggage zipper with just a pencil, so the locks are kinda a waste of time if you really worry about thiefs.
But I guess it keeps most "nosey" people away.
I am listening to your report on the Honda. I have ridden a few hondas as work bikes and pleasure bikes. Only the 96 blade that I had was at all interesting, maybe thay was the 16" front wheel.
I have an FZ1N, and agree the fueling is a but lumpy, but can be dialed a bit. The gearing is also too tall, not unusual for Yamaha, a sprocket change can sort that. Perhaps like Ducati, the Yamaha is designed to have a smaller front sprocket.
When you are talking about getting the bikeeant over, I had some insecurity with my FZ1 when I first got it. Now I have dialled in the suspension (I can not recommend getting any bike suspension set properly, if nothing else get the SAG sorted) and put on a set of Dunlop Roadsmart 3, I have the bike where I want it and am happily pushing harder. I am now so confident that I have started to peel the front even though it is a touring tyre (by the way if you have not trued a set I would recomend them highly).
I do totally agree with you regarding the comfort though, I have had my seat adjusted, raised 1cm which helped a bit but still sore after a few hours.
Anyway, I am glad you are enjoying your new bike, wish it sounded a bit nicer.
Ine last thing, my brother once fell off when discovering a spill of cider slops in France, fortunately it was only a small off and not a total fruit off.
The FZ1N is an awesome bike, no doubt. I was a bit restricted in that here in Germany, a sprocket change has to be tested and approved by the TÜV people (€€) and that ECU remapping is essentially illegal for road use unless it's an approved map (€€€€). Otherwise I could have done a lot more to make it perfect. I totally agree aswell that the tyres play a huge role. Larger than many people realise. Good rubber can make what seems like an uninspiring bike into a carving weapon! Never tried the Dunlops, but I'm sure I'll get round to them one day. At first I thought you were taking the pith about your brother's off, then I realised that it was berry much a true story! Cheers Duncan! Keep on enjoying that Yam!
Ahhh of course the German legislation, I would not have thought about that. There is a no mods rule hete, but they don't look too closely fortunately.
As yoi pointed out in this video uoi current boots are shedding tread depth faster than loosing weight after a suspect burrito. When I was working (riding all day, everyday) on motorcycles in London and the south east I first fitted a set of dunlop roadsmart tyres. That was tje first generation, they were wonderful. I looked at the road 5 as you were such a big fan, during my online reseaech I heard some slightly concerning reports on them being puncture prone and not too brilliany on super hot days. We get a few of them, it is still hitting 30+ now. I then recalled my favourite Dunlops and felt silly foe not having them in my mind before. To my joy a set of roadsmart 3 where half the price of the road 5, even better is tye fact they have only got better to ride on. I would heartily recommend them for you, confidence inspiring in all conditions, excellent feedback front and rear and very stable in all temperatures I have ridden in so far. In addition to that you can expect excellent mileage (Road 5 lifespanesq), and maybe there as here available for a great price.
Ride safely, I guess winter will be decending hard in your patch soon. Take it easy.
Sadly the German rules make everything a little bit more complicated and expensive. But at the same time it means that you can buy aftermarket parts with confidence that they've actually been tried out on your bike! Plus you can be confident that (mostly) all the other bikes out there are in good order. It must be about time for Dunlop to bring out the Roadsmart 4.....
Quick comment on your tyres... Road 5s and S21s have very different profiles, so to scrub right over to the edge of a Road 5 rear needs far more lean than with the S21. Plus, if you're hanging off less on the Honda you'll naturally be leaning over more for a given corner speed anyway. Nice review though Andy, and a cracking road trip 👍

I'm considering pulling the trigger on a CB1000R, and these touring videos have helped me narrow this bike to one of 2 choices. My question is, would this be a feasible choice for short touring with a pillion, such as a week, 10 days etc? Also, would heavier bar ends not help with the vibrations in the bars? My only real concern is during highway speeds, the buzzing might be off putting for future trips that might require long(ish) hwy stretches.

Hy DC44! Sadly I have no experience with a pillion on this bike. Not one bottom has been placed upon that rear perch! With my panniers, there is definitely not enough room for a pillion to put their feet properly on the pegs though. Obviously other panniers would likely remedy that.
As for the vibrations, they're more than just in the bars. At the buzziest points, it comes through the seat, pegs and (if I should happen to touch them) the engine bars too. I firmly believe it's a situation that can be remedied by sorting the lean fuelling out (The Boosterplug has helped a little, though not entirely). But yes, at stock, it is a little annoying on long highway stretches. It is much better also, with the stock end can back on though.

Yes you can tour :) I've just scored 45000 km, including some 3000+km trips (Croatia, Romania, Austrian and Italy Alps) and I do agree - if you want ride naked bike long distance then CB is goo enough for that. Indeed, the stock D214 are crapy, in my case I've switched to Pirelli Angel GT II - what a change.

Yep. It’s a weapon! The stock tyres are terrible (unless you’re lucky enough to get the Bridgestones like i did) and the rear shock is begging to be upgraded, but it’s such a joy to ride in the bendies! I don’t think that false neutral is your fault, I have the same issue and I’m riding bikes for 24 years now, had 7 different bikes thru a years and never had an issue with false neutral before, but with CB1000R (bought mine 2018 November) I get it at least 5 times a year and sometime really scary, when you go max acceleration than hit false neutral …. than engage a gear and wheelie …… brrrrr !

Great stuff Andy, these are one of my favourite bikes and I currently own an fz1n 2007 , the only thing stopping me getting one was the bhp and the so called lack of power compared to it's rivals , so does it live up to the bad hype poeple say or is it a myth when riding roads, and if you had a choice between the cb1000r , mt10 , or bmw s1000r . What would be your choice if you were taking a passenger all the time too , 👍🏼👊🏼😎👌🏼
Thanks mate! I have never felt that it feels underpowered. I utterly love the power delivery and it feels way more torquey at the low end than my FZ1 did. I could be remembering it wrong, but the feel of the engine was extremely similar to the S1000R i rode in the Alps a while ago. Obviously the MT10 motor was a bit more grunty and exciting, but the fuelling (back then at least, before they fixed it) was too jerky and abrupt for me. Also the styling wasn’t my cup of tea and the CB1000R just grabbed me. It’s got it’s shortcomings, but it’s still my favourite thing out there right now.

Hi George! I'm 1.92cm. I have had my seat raised up by 3 cm and now it'S very comfortable. So probably just right for you. Although everybody's idea of comfortable is very different!!

I tour on my z900rs and have some similar troubles but this bike sounds so wonderful I can't help but think I'd mind them less on this. Love the Z but want a bit more beef and this thing just looks sexy
I didnt mind it all for 2 years and 24,000km. But eventually it was too much and I’ve got a much bigger bike for the touring now.

I come from the CBR1000RR world and wanted a more upright seat for longer distances and the CB1000R is in my short list.
How would you compare this bike to a Ninja 1000SX ?
Far more comfortable, for me at least. I found the SX very cramped by comparison.
“Uncomfortable right wrist”..... 🤣🤣🤣. All joking aside I fitted a R&G tail tidy to my CB1000r for exactly the same reason, so much easier to adjust the chain.
It comes to the best of us! 😉 I'm not really sure what to do, as I do really like the low mounted number plate! There has to be an aftermarket alternative somewhere! Otherwise I'm going to have to get the Dremel out...

I enjoyed following your adventure! I'd get this bike but insurance wants $6k a year so I'm getting a CB650 after I sell my CB300R. Also CB300r has that same annoying bar in the gas hole 😂

There’s a plastic wrist save that you fit on the throttle to give your hand a rest , it’s only cheap and I can’t remember what it’s called but it’s very good.
I tried one of those once. It snapped off of the first go!! 😂 it was sent to me for free from china though, so probably not the greatest quality!!

Im not sure why you're having the trouble with chain adjustment. It was a bit fiddly for me to set the correct length, as with that special tool you need to move it in slight increments, for which I figured you need to mildly hit the handle in the correct direction rather than constantly pulling. Otherwise, I didn't find the rear fender arm being too much of a nuisance when undoing/tightening the holder nuts.

TBH I’ve never felt the bike is underpowered. I can’t see why i would ever need more. It’s just numbers on paper. I’ve ridden faster than far more powerful machines without breaking a sweat. You’ve got to go with what works for you though! It is a good looking ride though! Cheers!
How tall are you? My knees don't hug the tank. My knees fall below the tank and unable to grip. I am 5ft 8 inches. Have you adjusted the pegs?

It’s not exactly long term, but the only quality issue i have so far is that the paint is awful. It’s worn off on several places on the underside of the engine and also the tank has been chipped and scratched in a few places by things that really shouldn’t have been able to damage the paint. Protection is vital! Otherwise it’s so far doing very well.
Think it takes a good tour to fully get to know a new bike, only then do you get a good feel for it. Need to get past that, oh look at me on me new bike you get on short rides. Seems the only thing your new ride was missing on this tour was aircon! lol
I totally agree Mark. I thought I knew this bike before, but discovered a few extra idiosyncrasies during this trip. I'm a few steps closer to making it perfect for me now and a lot closer to know the bike inside out! Aircon would be nice though....

Possible for some that they might be. 805mm is VERY wide! But for me and my orangutan arms, they’re perfect.

It is an intoxicating mix. But in the end i found myself missing the bark and brapp of a punchy twin!
I know the ergonomic isn’t exactly the same but in 1990 I made a trip from Quebec Canada ( east coast) to Malibu California, witch is a trip of around 7 days at normal speed , on a Kawasaki ninja 750 1987 and one of the thing that made me laugh all along was the so many times that I pass a big rigs and when they saw the plate on my bike and where I was coming from they always blow their horns with a thumbs up, for dedication as on how it must not be comfortable for such a long rides. But If I just had the money to do it, I would have try to go to the end of the world on my bike , it was my second bike after my FZ 750 , but when you really have the passion on bikes your on-board with many kinda tortured things. 😂😂😂😍👍👍😍😍

@@AndyManCam that’s where the difference is between someone who see’s bike as a mode of transportation, and the ones who really got the passion of it, depending on where you lives of course, but I’m from Quebec where we have 4 seasons and when it’s start to get cold you will see many bikers stored their bike for winter, wile theirs a few exceptions who will jump on the bike instead of the car, even when it’s beginning to snow........ just saying when I bought my first bike ( witch was used, and took me like forever because of the lack of moneys ) it was the 14 of April 1988 and I went with one of my buddy who had one for more than a year before I got mine so I was counting on his experience if something was wrong and I didn’t notice, but strangely even for this dates, it started to snow, so my friend suggested me to buy it but leave it there for the time we got back to get the trailer to pick it up later, but when you’ve wait so long and works so hard to get what you desired the most, your not gonna let a little snow stop you, so I got on it and took off with it, but the snow just keep falling down harder and harder so much that for the last half of the ride home, I literally had to let my feet dragging on the grounds going really slow as it was so slippery, but the whole thing is probably why even today and with the 3 sévères head trauma that made me lost some memories, but I remember that day, and that even with the snow I couldn’t have been more happy, of course everything’s my fault and now I’ve been so reckless with bikes that I had a few extremely serious crash that left me kinda half human and half TERMINATOR, but I probably worth way more because of all the titanium parts in me, but I wish I could but physically I can’t rides anymore, after only a 10 minutes ride the pain is so excruciating that I cry like a baby, and for those who are gonna say I’m a woos , let’s just say that I broken a leg in the pass and I just rubbed it a bit and continued walking on it, of course I was limping but I’m pretty sure many would have stayed down. But for the Quebec Canada theirs laws on when you can or can not rides because of colds and snows, and it’s always the dates that stop me because I was riding until the temperatures drop below zero, like I said to many who told me I was crazy, hey it’s not worst than those who rides snowmobile. And I think it’s a pretty good way to see who as the passion of riding. 👍👍👍👍👍
Great review always remember when in Europe to use premium fuel as it has 5% ethanol same as uk. The cheaper fuel has 10% ethanol and no matter which bike I rode in Europe always felt the bike rattled and vibrated more with this fuel.
Most places in Germany have 5% in the normal stuff. You have to choose to buy the 'Super E10' to get the 10% stuff. Not sure how much is in the premium stuff though.
@@AndyManCamE10 has 90 octane, standard has 95 octane and the premiums variants have 98 to 102 octane depending on the brand
Octane rating has nothing to do with the ethanol and E10 is actually 95 octane, just the same as the E5 stuff. It just has more ethanol and so therefore burns slightly cleaner but with the tradeoff of having slightly lower energy.
@@AndyManCam oh yeah, sorry got it wrong. The premium variants have 2% to 0% ethanol. The 0% ones may have up to 2% ether instead

Really bugs me when TH-cam riders have to enunciate what they say, with their left arm. If someone or an animal stepped out it would take at least a whole second longer before the rider could react. However no, there is Mr I am so Suave/Cool flapping his arms around while driving through towns/residential. (Even the both hands off in a residential area.)
The brakes are on the right hand/right foot. Although sure, having the left hand off the bars isn’t really the best setup for hard braking, most of your body weight in any braking situation should be transferred into the tank with your thighs. The handlebars are there for steering. They’re not there for leaning on. I can brake pretty hard without putting any weight on to my arms. I know this because i do it every time I brake hard into a corner. By gripping the tank with your legs, the force of your body’s mass being slowed acts upon the bike at a lower and more centralized point and therefore creates a more stable braking situation. It also teaches you to keep your weight low and rearward which furthermore stabilizes the braking by reducing the tendency for the rear wheel to lift. The fact that you see the idea of braking without both hands firmly gripping the bars hints to me that this is all news to you. I’m not saying that it’s not better to always have both hands on, but if you NEED your hands on the bars to stop, you’re doing it wrong.

I know you like the fueling and this is an older video, but are you ever considering the booster plug for this bike? I just installed one on my '17 versys 1000LT. I ran the bike in the garage for a few mins to make sure I didn't mess anything up during the install. I have noticed a much stronger idle and clutch engagement. I haven't ridden it yet but hope it will help with the rough low end and snatchy throttle at the low revs.
Funnily enough, I've already got one in. Haven't made a vid yet as I'm still testing. Sport mode is definitely a bit smoother and the vibes are a bit reduced.
Are there any ECU flashers out there for this bike?
Andy, for a power point have a look at the Givi S110 and S111.
Brilliant bit of kit and very tidy, it is pricey but worth it.

Keep an eye on places that sell them, especially eBay.
I bought the S110 and S111 for half price brand new, caught them in a sale.
The whole kit was on my Kawasaki ER6-F, and now it's on my Honda CBF1000F ( same base engine as your CB1000 😁). Easy to swap between bikes, and the power hub just stays in the tank bag. Wouldn't be without it now, especially as the power socket on the handlebars is so discreet.
Sounds like you are quite a happy man with this bike with maybe just a couple of niggles to iron out. Good review:)

Thanks mate! Yeah that was a lot of fun. Sadly I’ve actually ditched the Honda now. I wasn’t happy with the quality of finish as lots of paint was merrily falling off the bike. Also Honda’s lack of interest in making things right without a fight put me off the brand for good.

Have to agree. I did the Picos on a 125 Varadero, absolutely fabulous time.
As long as it's got 2 wheels and the seat isn't a razorblade, the only thing up for grabs is how long it's going to take! But in the most beautiful areas, slower is probably better!

My pleasure! This is certainly a fun bike. After more riding I’m starting to find the forward riding position a bit hard on the wrists on longer rides. But I’m hoping some bar risers will sort that. The paint quality is also utterly terrible.

I’ve seen another one in person that has the same bad paint and heard of many others online. I think quality control isn’t what it used to be at Honda. The CB will definitely be a lot more comfortable for you then!
