2021 Honda CB1000R Black Edition | MC Commute

  • As the already flagship model of the Honda’s Neo-Sports Café lineup, the 2021 CB1000R Black Edition takes it a step further with a number of form and function improvements for the new model year. The best part? Honda maintained its relatively well-priced $12,999 MSRP despite such upgrades.
    --
    Honda added the “Black Edition” suffix to the CB1000R, following the footsteps of its premium automobile offerings. The rebadge identifies an up-spec fit and finish to the outgoing, with hints of blacked-out coloring scattered throughout. Bits like the radiator shrouds, fork legs, airbox covers, exhaust system, and more drip in black finish. New seven-spoke cast aluminum wheels are also fitted to the Black Edition for a more intricate styling.
    Powering the CB1000R is a 998cc DOHC inline-four powerplant, originating from Honda’s previous-generation superbike. While sharing the same basic architecture as its track-slaying sibling, the engine has been adapted for improved midrange delivery on the public road via an improved airbox flow, significantly larger throttle bodies, larger intake ports, and increased valve lift on both intake and exhaust. For reference, the last CB1000R we ran on our in-house dyno produced 120.1 hp at 9,700 rpm and 68.6 pound-feet of torque at 8,200 rpm.
    Sure, the CB1000R’s dyno chart suggests modest peak figures, but it is a ripper in the midrange. Opening the throttle reveals a direct connection to the rear wheel via its throttle-by-wire system and a confidence-inspiring, butter-smooth initial acceleration as it rolls off the corner, quickly followed by an entertaining jolt in power around 7,000 rpm. Keep it wrung, it’ll loft a front wheel skyward as it spins toward redline. The added bidirectional quickshifter fitted to the ‘21 model makes for near seamless gear changes through its six-speed gearbox.
    Quick acceleration and ripping performance is only complemented by the CB1000R’s nimble and flickable chassis. The in-command position of the one-piece off-road-style handlebar position leverages the 468-pound wet weight with quick turn-in characteristics and easy midcorner corrections. OE-fitted Pirelli Diablo Rosso III rubber lends itself to superb grip and feel.
    This street bike is brought to a quick stop via a pair of Tokico four-piston calipers and 310mm discs up front. Although stopping power is strong, the system lacks brake feel and robs understanding of how much pressure is being applied to the disc. A fixed ABS setting is standard and offers a well-balanced level of intervention.
    Honda added a 5-inch TFT display to the CB1000R for 2021, which replaces the LCD display of the outgoing model. The new dashboard offers much improved visibility of pertinent information and is easily navigated through via the left handlebar switch. All-LED lighting adds to the Black Edition’s premium touch and Honda’s high-quality fit and finish.
    The 2021 Honda CB1000R Black Edition adds a degree of both performance and quality to an already impressive platform. Considering that it achieves both without an increase in price, it’s hard to argue the value. No black card needed.

    The styling of the Naked Honda Café Range is my favorite out there for sure. Sleek, Modern and Classis altogether and especially a fan of the Halo front light. I love this CB1000R but for me the CB650R is the one that ticks all the boxes as a commuter and especially considering the price difference between it and the 1000R it just makes much more sense. Great Video.

      The 650R retains some more purity imho, due in large part to foregoing throttle-by-wire. I don't care how good they make those, they'll never be as direct as a good old-fashioned cable. Can't be done. More steps in the chain will always result in more latency.

I know people are going to complain that is lower in power than the mt10 and the other super nakeds but it’s not a slow bike and on the street it keeps up, so what if the super sport liter bikes get to the next light a second ahead of you, you’re still there with them.

    This bike suffers from heavy neutering in the first 3 gears and is limited up top as well.
    Also the 5.5k rpm flat spot for emissions.
    ECU flash with a better flowing exhaust gets you up around 150rwhp.
    My 2018 is still one of my favorite bikes of all time even though nobody in the US was doing flashes yet.
    Short gearing is used to mask the horrendous flat spot so highway rpm is very high along with fuel consumption.
    So much potential with looks to kill.

      I've got the 2020 model in the UK and I have to agree with your comment regarding the flat spot between 5.5k and 7.5k RPM. A full exhaust system with ECU remap eradicates this issue and a throttle map helps massively too. Good thing in the UK is that motorbikes can have the catalytic converter removed and it still be road legal! I've seen from dyno figures you'll gain around 20rwhp in that flat range and around 10rwhp overall. That literally transforms the bike, it'll be a wheelie monster up to 3rd gear for sure.

    Love the bike, though... for me, it took some mods to make it perfect. Suspension was too soft (so mine now rocks Ohlins), then change sprocket sizes (front & rear) to increase acceleration (THough suposedly gearing is shorter, still too tall for my liking). Toss in a Yoshimira pipe (for me, at least), and it now sounds great! (sounded pretty good before though). Love this bike! I also keep a windscreen and some saddlebags/seat bag for long rides, and this bike can do it all now (Track, commute, tour). Still keeping my dirt bike, though :) With rider aids on, this bike is almost hard to mess up with, but with the new suspension, even with electronics off, its wonderfull on a track. I do wish it had cruise control, though. Seen cheaper nakeds (MT-09 SP, XSR900) that have it.

    It always baffles me when people review a bike such as this one - whilst riding Miss Daisy around the streets, then they "review" it whilst talking about fuel economy and handling! I know you can ride - so ride it like you stole it! At 140mph, the wind is minimal when you tuck in - as opposed to sitting up recording a video! As for a "snatchy throttle", it isn't in rain mode, nor in sport mode whilst hooning! It is also 143.5hp, not 125 ish like the old version, and it can be retuned to the fireblade 175 if you want! Great video and channel BTW. I love your stuff, and don't want to sound critical, bit I have ridden this on the track as well as the road!

    I guess this is Honda's closest competition to the Ninja 1000SX and the Suzuki GSX 1000GT, although the Honda is a naked bike whereas the other are fully faired sport-touring. Somewhat similar riding position and more street friendly engines though is what I am looking for. I saw rumors of a CBR 1000R that was a faired version of this basically, or the big brother to the CBR650R, which I was really looking forward to. Unfortunately it has still not made it past rumor status. This bike seems like a pretty cool bike, I have been on the fence for a little while. I just can't get past the naked style though, really never have liked the naked. I am not the only one that would like to see a CBR version either, I know of lots of others who have suggested the same. Although I love Honda , I am going to have to go with Suzuki or Kawasaki at this point because of Honda's lack of choices of decent bikes in the sport-touring market.

      I picked up a 2021 and so far I like it, one problem for me is there is not much of an aftermarket for modding this bike, had the 2021 mt09sp been out around here at that time I likely would have went that way too, straight line stuff they are pretty close but I think the Honda outperforms the standard mt09 in the corners.

    • @madrat5176
      @madrat5176 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KB-yj5xp I totally disagree about handling. The MT-09 outperforms the Honda workout question. And I rode both hard in the canyons. The Honda is great, don't get me wrong, but not as good overall. As far as aftermarket parts, they're light right now, but I've found quite a bit for such a new model. Low mount plate (fender eliminator) and mini pod LED signals front and back. CRG bar end mirrors with Rhinomoto weighed bar ends, AVS brake and clutch levers and Evotech radiator guard. I have a Yoshimura exhaust on order and it's been delayed AGAIN so now it won't be delivered until mid-January. But it's a badass exhaust and not a compromise

    • @KB-yj5xp
      @KB-yj5xp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@madrat5176 thanks for the comparison, I haven’t ridden the mt09 just rode with a couple but they were older models, the guys complained a lot about the suspension and fell back once the corners started getting tighter, but there could be a lot of reasons for that. The aftermarket for the Honda sucks, no ecu flashes and can’t even change the gearing without getting error lights, it does have a couple cosmetic things like you said, rad guard, bar ends etc.. I think if they come out with an r9 I might consider trading in the Honda.
