There is a YT documentary "The History of Finnish Heavy Metal" where Lauri Porra (Stratovarius bass player) says brilliantly:
"In the middle of 90s we had some great ideas,
some dude wanted to mix opera with power metal (Tuomas, Nightwish)
another dude wanted to mix power metal with black metal (Alexi, Children of Bodom)
and another person wanted to play Metallica with cellos (Apocalyptica). These are now the three biggest bands from Finland and those are three really crazy ideas."

@@enterthecronic Really? Wow! Nightwish and Children of Bodom are my top2 bands of all-time. Those were the days when those two bands broke through almost exactly at the same time in Finland.
Apocalyptica was Metallica's warm-up band at Helsinki ice hall 1996. I was there and it was quite surreal moment, when Metallica guys suddenly appeared at one of the doorways to watch these guys play. And they impressed Metallica so much, that they invited Apocalyptica to their 30th birthday party in San Fransisco 2011. James even played that ONE song with them. And there is a rumor, that this is where James got his idea to do S/M album (Metallica songs with symphonic orchestra).
Cello gotta be one of my favourite instruments! also fun fact: Max Lilja, one of the founding members of Apocalyptica, has been in Tarja's solo band since 2007 until present! :)
Ah, Max Lilja is a fine artist - he was already some kind of prodigy, he was only nine years old when he was accepted into the Sibelius Junior Academy. His own music is also interesting + his other band, Hevein (heavy metal).
Cello is soulful music instrument. Works all kind music as we can hear here.

Playing master on puppets on a non elecric cello, and make it sound like this, takes talent, no dount these guys are super talented cello performers.. i should proberly listen to some more from them, as i dont really listen to any bands simular to this, and as said, they know how to work a cello..
I have know about Apocalyptica a long time, and always knew they was good, listening to a song here and there, and when they was featuring with other bands, just never really listened to a album, or took a bigger dive to Apocalypticas own music....
Correct me if I'm wrong here but Apocalyptica's debut sold so well that it allowed the band play in Europe and the record company was able to release records of other bands.

I think they met at the SIbelius Academy in Helsinki,
the premiere music school in Finland,
and at least one of them has played in the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra
only giving up when Apocalyptica took off.
Yes, I had the pleasure to hear Perttu Kivilaakso play as the leading cellist for Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra for years before he jumped to this career. In the beginning, they used to have SIX cello players from Sibelius Music Academy in the band and no percussionist. I heard also this group in 1995. Then they were playing only Metallica songs,
I wasn't home, and this premiered😞 Shame on me.. But you guys, you're most welcome - And back to you, great reaction 💯💗❣
