Oh guys, Nina Hagen is much more than a Rock or Punk lady. She was born in the DDR (east Germany). That‘s important to know about her. Also important is, that the partner of her mother was Wolfgang Biermann. A critic of the socialist DDR regime. It was therefore politically shaped early on. All together she is one of the authentic art figures in german kultur. It’s an interesting person with history. A real icon! Sorry, but my english is not the best, but i hope u know what i mean

Nina has a 4 Octaves voice. Some even say that she can do 5. Saw her back in the late seventies. She is a weirdo but an awesome performer.

A little history of Hagen: Ninas was born in East Berlin during the GDR era. Her mother is Eva-Maria, a well-known actress. In the GDR (and in the West) she became famous with the hit "Du hast den Farbfilm vergessen (You forgot the color film)". The song is about a vacation trip and the man didn't take any color film with him to hold on to (and yes, there was a time without memory chips). In the GDR you couldn't just buy a new one, because everything wasn't always available in the shops and she is accordingly disappointed. In the 1970s, the GDR allowed critical artists to tour West Germany, but refused to allow them to return home. They were expatriated during the tour. Nina joined a protest and became an undesirable person. So she was unemployed, left the GDR and also went to the FRG. Now there were no artistic barriers to her 4 octave voice. She founded a band, which split up with her because she was too unpredictable and self-centered. Nina reports on her UFOs, becomes a Budist and then becomes a devout Christian - more or less. She lives and tours across Europe and the USA. During her budism phase, Cosma is born, who revolts against her mother and becomes a kind, calm person. Like her grandmother, she becomes an actress. Eva-Maria claims that she can sing at least as well as her mother, but she never makes a record. But there is a recording somewhere on TH-cam where the three of them are playing a musical together.

Hypnotic Nina. "Seemann" remains the greatest cover I've ever heard, only "The Sound Of Silence" by David Draiman stands in that same league.

. From 1980 to 1986 Hagen lived mainly in the USA. Her vocal range used to be 4 octaves. At Rock in Rio she sang in front of 300,000 people.
Born in the former GDR Nina Hagen completed an education as an opera singer. And hell yeah - she is able to sing the WHOLE range! Then she moved over to West Germany in the late 1970ies and became the queen of German Punk Rock. She is definitely the craziest person we have ever had in Germany! Check her early songs from the 1980ies like "New York New York" or "African Reggae"

One of my favourite Nina Hagen songs on a reaction channel? :) Nina Hagen was an opera prodigy that jumped on the punk wave train and became one of the biggest icons of the punk era. She would often use her classical training to mock the classical music establishment. :)
While she is mostly forgotten now, she was very important to the musical revolution of the late 70's and for the evolution of modern rock.

Some like the original better, some like this better, I love both, they're just different.
What exites me the most, is that this is all played on 3 cello's and a drumkit. Metalcello's. And yes Nina Hagen is now a 65 years old punkmom and after so many years I was suprised how good her voice still is (although this track is a few years old, she was way over 50 when this was recorded).

She really is captivating. For me mostly because of her dramatic way of telling a story. More than her music (not really my style of music, but I can still appreciate it as an artform) I LOVE her readings of poems, fairytales or other texts. And of course I also know her as the German voice for Yubaba from "Spirited Away" as well as Sally from "A Nightmare before Christmas".

Ehhhh Apocalyptica! I love those guys. They're so sweet and funny, and amazingly talented. I highly recommend watching their video for "I Don't Care" featuring Adam Gontier. That song is really special to me.
