For this video my buddy Josh lent me his Honda Civic Type R for about a week to have all the fun I wanted. It was an amazing opportunity like the 36 Toyota Supra story I babysitted due to similar circumstance so I was up for the challenge. I wanted to go more in depth with the Civic Type R because the only seat time I had was for about an hour last video, so this was a good way to really see what it's like to own a Civic Type R and get a better review out of it. The Type R does many things well, and here's what I think! Thanks for watching!

What do you guys think of the Civic Type R?
picking a type r as soon as my 2018 si is paid off, so in about 6 months... but just as i said when the type r first released, im not paying a penny over sticker
its grown on me. when i first saw it i hated it, but now its cool. I own an ST so i am biased towards my big brother the RS. Only thing i would change with the Type R is equal sized exhaust tips lol 3 tips is okay if they were all the same size
That your opinion is wrong and you continue to show your bias towards dumb american cars. There is NOBODY objective that knows about cars, that has driven both the RS and Type-R that has come out saying "yeah the RS is more fun". Dare you to show me someone outside the autistic RS forums that believes that and is credible/reputable car guy.

I'd be happy to pay MSRP and nothing more. the suspension is amazing, the brakes are powerful, the gearbox is a joy to row, and the torque is delicious. It makes a great daily even though it looks like an anime haircut. Great car even if its lame in the sound department

Agreed. Hopefully, in 2019, we get different Type R variants causing the current CTR's to go down. "Anime Haircut" style turns heads everywhere you go, feels awesome.

Love days I can drive my Type R!!! 45 year old women and have been wanting one since I heard they were coming to the US. My family surprised me with it for Mother’s Day! Best, most fun driving $36,000 car out there!
This! I just picked up my Civic Type R today... Had to have one after test driving it.. just bites into the pavement almost as if it had AWD but it is FWD. It is so light and the Aero parts are surprisingly functional. The interior is also amazing and feels high quality. I still will keep my WRX STI as my daily becuase I want to keep the Type R nice, but on weekends and nice weather I will enjoy it!!
I agree. This 45 year old man loves his as well. Stylish, nice torque and power. My wife is an elementary school teacher and picky and she even loves it! Good job Honda

Edit: the new Sti is now not considered an Impreza at all. Wrx is a separate car.
Lol ya he doesn't get the type r hype I suppose. The sounds can be modified by adding different waste gates, intakes, etc. It is quiet though.

@@samsmith4067 Removing the Impreza name from the wrx sti platform is a recent thing. Throughout all of history it has been done this way. These cars are just sports oriented versions of it's regular self. And what's the point of stating people aren't going to buy this car because it has the civic badge attached to it, when you can just look at sales numbers which tell you otherwise. This car was meant to target car enthusiasts, that know about cars and its history. If it was completely new platform with no history, it would be hard to target new customers and to try to teach them why your car is the best out of all other choices. Honda knows this, which is why they used their official Nurburgring laptime as a way to sell this car. Target market = car enthusiasts.

Having owned mine for a year, I’ve enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. It’s driving dynamics are way higher than its price would suggest and it’s special enough to make you look back at it every time you park.

The CTR is super fun and is exactly what you want for a daily driver. Aside, from being incredibly fun on the street, you can easialy drive it to the track and drive right onto the track and still put down lap times you will be proud of. It really doesn't deserve any hate, in the end it's still a Civic but it's also the literal best Civic you could ever own.

@@sbklvr Agreed, so many people heavily modify them and only end up making them worse. The only thing I'm doing to mine is Exhaust, Mugen Steering Wheel and maybe an intake just for sound.

I wonder how these engines will hold out when people start swapping the turbo and boosting the hell out of the engine, Hondas are already roll race monsters the new type r could be a beast on the streets.
They already have a problem with heat from the turbo after a few laps on the track. Not sure how every day driving is tho.

Another great review. The dealers ruin the demand for special, fantastic cars like these by putting ludicrous mark-ups on them. They probably kill half if not more potential sales by putting them into a totally different price bracket than they were intended for. It would be great if the manufacturers would prohibit them from being allowed to get the cars unless they agreed to not gouge the buyer, and the higher sales would make another generation of production more viable instead of killing it off after one meaning more great cars for us all to enjoy.
It’s an amazing car without a doubt; that’s why I bought one - one of the few cars I’ve ever driven that always leaves a smile on my face and that I always look at when I park it and walk away

Nice review. I had the pleasure of test driving a type r and i fell in love right away, it's such a great car in my opinion.
I love this car just bought one less than a month and I love it. Fast and handling real well also very comfortable to drive. If something I like and I really want it never be too expensive...For 306HP and 295 torque. 13.7 sec quarter mile @105.9 miles and 0-60 mph 5.2 seconds. I like the best about this car is that it so quiet to drive. No ones will know until you drop the gear and fly on them. Silence is always a great killer! With loud exhaust sounds = more tickets from the cops if you wanted to drive daily.
They will never come out with AWD.... Europe has had the Type R for years as a FWD. AWD is just not in the Type R heritage.
They are making one with electric motors on the rear wheels.

7:48 As far as I've been aware, Honda decided to keep the Type R FWD in order to keep the weight down and yada yada "pure driving experience". I still would, like, totally sleep with the thang though.

Great review, David. I totally agree with you that the dealers want to mark up certain cars, which kills their appeal. I just recently bought a 2018 Focus RS. The first dealer I checked with wanted $3,000 OVER window sticker. Ridiculous! So I called the dealer that I bought my 2015 Ecoboost Mustang from and they came through. $1,200 UNDER window! So I bought it and I love driving it. Keep up the good work. I considered the Type R too, before I bought the RS.
I think I have a Type R and I have no regrets living with!! Brilliant example of a hot hatch that could also track as fast as real sportscars

Yep, they are great fun to drive:) mate traded his 2010 EVO10 in on one. About the same power standard, which the EVO was not:) About 450 horses were easily let loose! All wheel drive in the EVO which in my humble opinion is a more fun car to drive. I did a midnight run from Sydney to Melbourne in it sitting at 245 to 260 KPH for long stretches during which incredible amounts of petrol was used,lol. Think i topped out at 270 odd a few times. At that speed the EVO feels totally stable, mate was comfortable enough to go to sleep:) The Honda to me lacks personality even though its quick and very nimble, and brakes as well as the EVO. No torque steer at all, very nice, but lacks feel that the EVO had! No noise, very quiet which i dont mind. Ime not a kid who wants a "look at me" roar! The EVO on the other hand absolutely screams at 7500 revs. It really sounds incredible. Love that engine. It can be tuned up to ridiculous power levels, much higher than the 450 it had! Yet to be seen what the type R will produce as its still under warranty so no tuning:) I got pulled by the cops at 3am around Albury Wodonga on the Sydney Melbourne run. Because of trucks on the other side of the highway i was on low beam a lot. I never saw the cop car till i was nearly on him at 245KPH! The 4 wheel 12 inch Brembos pulled it down so fast as i overtook him i was down to 110 KPH,lol He pulled me over. Smoke was pouring from under the EVO from the hard stop. Cop comes up to the window, looks at me with a sort of pissed off smile and says.."You guys have been fangin this thing a bit havent you"..Priceless,lol Jeezuz i must have come up so fast in his rear view mirror,lol. No charges, thank god. If he had got me at 245 it would have been straight into the lockup,lol..Great brakes on the EVO:) havent really had a chance to test the type R yet! Sydney to Melbourne in 5 and a half hours in the EVO including petrol stops! Its normally a nine hour drive:/ Cost of the Type R in Australia, 55000$ AUD

I have a DC2 GSR with a hole in the muffler and rusted cat covers. Sounds amazing and pulls amazingly awesome. 178HP naturally aspirated short gears and 37 MPG. Awesome!

Well used 2017's are almost 2 years old and selling for over MSRP of new, around $38k. The CTR will hold its value better than 95% of cars.

I would pay the money. I just bought a 2018 Civic Si and it’s really really good in the mountains. I’ve owned 4 different years of the Si and the 18 is the best so far. I imagine the type r rips even harder.

I bought one in August. I paid 1k over sticker, waited 4 months for it to come in. I love the car for what it is, and I think at 35k it’s right on the money for what it does. My alternative is M2 Comp but that’s at 58k....

My bone stock 2018 CTR- no drone. Not as loud as it could be, but I can hear it. Per my wife it is much louder from outside the car. She can hear me coming up the street. Fairly quiet if you're not revving it, but that makes it easy to live with. Best car I have ever owned. A smaller turning circle and more front lip clearance is lip lift would be nice. Never mind, pneumatics add weight. That and a rear cross traffic monitor. Don't miss lane keep, etc.
This is a keeper.
In a world of 'luxury' 'performance' cars that cost too much, with too much weight, no manual option, sucky storage and back seat legroom, and lesser seats, the Type R stands alone.
I paid $ 35K for a two year old '18 with 13K miles. Worth every dime.
Two years later, now with 31,000 miles, it is worth $5,000 more than I paid for it in 2020.
So yeah, it's worth it.

Is it me or do modern day vehicles have unnecessarily big wheels? Personally I think 17's would look good. Stock wheels seem too big and disproportionate to me

I have to admit the car doesn't look bad all. Is powerful but is still a foward car. Hondas has a pretty good cars like prelude and the nsx but i not feel like be a honda guy. For me subaru is my pick

Hey quick question! I've tested the 10th gen si and the thing that turned me way off is that the clutch was WAY to light, specially compared to my stock 8th gen SI. So how's the clutch on the type R?

I think all new sports cars are doomed in the sense that they can’t be affordable to the younger people who wants to buy them. Like l get that cars have gone a long way, and they’re getting better and better every year, but honestly the market is leaning towards SUV’s, and Crossovers. Hatchbacks are a last ditch effort to try to offer something smaller and more “sedan” like, while any Coupe is usually expensive. Today’s Miata is expensive, The BRZ and 86 are underpowered, and cost almost the same as a used 2014 and even 2015 Mustang GT
And Nissan has had the 370Z pushing on without any major improvements... It’s a rant but I hope car companies consider making more affordable fun cars, and try to get that momentum going, or just sell more SUV’s I guess....
I completely agree but what the younger generations wants and what they are willing to pay are two different things. Ultimately if they make a cheaper sports car people will talk shit about it and it will fail. It's hard to hit all the marks just right.

The Honda dealer associated with the set of dealers I work for has to be one of the few out there that doesn’t throw the crazy markup on the CTRs they get and they all have been sold within two weeks either at or slightly above MSRP. Sad to think of all the cool cars killed off too early because of greedy dealers.
I think there should be an type S version for lower price like the focus st and the golf gti.

Assuming the back up camera has indicator lines. Do the indicator lines move with the steering wheel? Or do they stay parallel when backing up?

Joseph Samsor rwd is not convenient to the general public which is why it is less common to see a rwd car in this generation of cars. Plus this car is supposed to be a track car in which awd and fwd tend to have more handling than a rwd.
What is the likelihood of a RWD Civic, there's almost no point in even mentioning it.
Same goes for AWD, the Previous Type Rs have always been FWD because the Civic is FWD.
Tim Tran how is rwd inconvenient? I can’t think of a single situation where it is personally. Also plenty of rwd cars handle really well. Just look at the track edition of the new camaros (forgot the name tbh). I think cars should just be more about having fun. Who cares if fwd shaves 2 seconds off a laptime. Nobody races to be the fastest anyway, and if they do there’s classes for it. Idk I see no reason to limit a car to fwd. awd would be cool but again kinda boring. No cool burnouts, no drifting, the car’s computer does all the work, and it’s just bland. An option for it would be sick but I’d prefer rwd over it for sure.

I've been living with my Civic Type R for a year now and it's been awesome. I have to say that the markup is insane, though. I paid a $4000 markup last year soon after the car came out and that's only because I freaking loved the car. I called every single dealer within 150 miles of me for two months before I found mine.
But be careful paying a deposit to a dealer on a civic type R they claim will arrive pretty far in the future. I think there are some scumbag dealers out there who are using low prices to entice people into paying deposits on cars they will never get. I found a dealer way out in the middle of nowhere in Iowa who claimed they would sell me one at MSRP, that I was number 9 on the list, that specific car was white and would arrive in about 6 months, and if somebody in front of me backed out I could get a different car maybe a bit sooner. I had to put down a $2000 deposit to get that slot which was nonrefundable if I backed out.
That all would make sense if dealers could order cars or were given schedules of allotments or something like that. But during my two months of calling every dealer multiple times I came to find out that honda doesn't tell dealers they're getting one to sell until a few weeks before the dealer gets it. It just randomly shows up in their system as a car the manufacturer is sending them. They don't know when and if another one is coming and they don't know what color it will be until they get that notification. The amount and frequency of civic type R allotments that honda provides is not disclosed but they think it's based on the number of cars the dealer sells and how fast they sell those civic type Rs.
The reputable dealers are still lining up lists of buyers before they know they're going to get their cars. But when they know they are going to get one they call around to all the people on their list to sell it. They're not taking deposits on specific colors of cars they claim they will receive 6 months out.

EA888 is far more potent than the type r motor. A pos civic doesnt just get 100 hp with a turbo slapped on. Doesnt work that way.
