- We've driven the Civic Type-R in a comparison for TV, but Honda wanted us to experience the changes made for 2019 so they sent us one for a fast blast. The guys charge up a tight mountain road and remember what they liked, what they didn't, and what's changed. Plus, Paul tries to convince Todd that the Type-R qualifies as Special.
You can see our comparison of the Type-R vs Focus RS on Amazon Prime, for free.

I am a 42 year old father of 4 boys. I come from the late 90s tuner scene which was so much fun. I bought my Type R 4 months ago. Its an awesome car. Still wanna find a mint 99 si someday. That was my early 20s car and it was just fantastic. Nice review!
being a 24 year old kid, and more than likely buying this car in a couple months, i imagine your kids gotta think its the coolest shit ever to get a ride in that thing hahaha.
You and I are on the same wave length. I'll be ready this spring. Is the car really that much fun? 2 kids here as well.
Still can’t find a Championship White without some crazy Markup.
Charlottetown Spud I'm with you I want that 99 si to. Mrmike it is that fun to drive.
I'm 38, father of one. Planning to trade in my BMW F32 for the type R anyday now.
The type r has been the best car that I have owned! It really can do everything. I take it to track days, autocross, and the kids ride in it regularly. I was skeptical of going into a fwd platform, but it really has changed my mind. Give it a chance and it will impress you!
If you can get past the looks it’s a good car
@@jlopez1017d looks are great
@@jlopez1017d Of course subjective. I hate the rear end of the hatches. The ridiculous wing helps hide the hideous rear end... This is coming from a Type R owner. The car handles like it's in rails.
Joe Friday if I was going to buy a hot hatch I would have to go with a polestar volvo it’s not as boy racer, similar driving dynamics, and has a better interior. Although it’s in a higher price range I feel like it’s such a good car
For me, I drove a type R, wasn’t really blown away compared to my Sti, ended up not buying. It’s a great car for sure, but the biggest turn off was the sounds it -doesn’t- make. I looked up different aftermarket exhaust options, and none sounded as good as a boxer engine. Plus it looks hideous from the rear 😂
Said it first: New for 2022 Honda Civic Type-R, traditional hand brake.
I love the car's styling!
The Type r around 2022 will be a hybrid Car. Honda announced they will Switch to hybrid/e-car
@@fnfal6286 which means no manual transmission. I won't even consider it.
I actually like the electric parking brake with auto hold on my 2019 Type R. I can relax my foot on each stop light. If I wanted a hand brake, I would’ve gotten a drift car instead so I don’t have a use for it on a front wheel drive car
They stop making the type r 2020 is last model after this it’s all electric my friend so buy one and hold on to it cause it will go down as a collectable and be priced hard
@@corone2018 True
People go on about the looks but this car looks awesome in person. It has such a distinctive character. And this is coming from new mustang owner.
Bingo! In this day and age though society wants to be catered to. Subaru caved when it came to STI wing and I hear Honda’s doing the same thing for the 2020 Type R? SMH! I plan on picking up one in championship white 🤤, wing and all, in the near future!
(Coming from a 1991 mustang GT owner)
LOL it does not look better in person. the exterior of especially the rear is a horrible design
USAalltheway! Nice choice!
SteveD Well looks are subjective. I like it and based on my experience a lot of people changed their mind like mine did. I got no reason to defend it 🤷🏻♂️
Too busy ricey! 🤔
I've had my Type R for 2 months and I've already taken it for a road trip across 5 European countries and I love it. I'm still even watching videos of it when they pop up on my channel. It gets stupid amounts of attention too, I kinda like that mind
Back in the day I remember saving up an entire summer for a JDM B18C ITR swap for my hatch. It was the best feeling driving that car. I've owned about 10 hondas, 5 of them hatchbacks... now 15 years later with a family this is the perfect car to satisfy my nostalgia and want for that raw Honda performance and feel. That's it, I've made the decision, getting this instead of the M3!
I had that same car earlier this summer and loved reviewing it. It's the true "do everything" car, and there's nothing else like it. The adaptive dampers are wonderful.
Thanks for the endless stream of awesome content, guys! I learn something every time I tune in.
This car looks better and better as a potential next DD when I get sick of the WRX.
Color you reviewed on is called pmm, polish metal metallic ! The gray u prefer to for 2019 is called sonic gray metallic!
Coris grey is a great looking colour
Beat me to it. The PMM is not new for the 2019 US market CTR.
The Sonic Grey was a exclusive color was the European market for a bit.
Sonic grey pearl
a8r0n it’s sonic gray pearl.
Great job . I love the numerous camera angles that you have integrated into the video. More of those please.
volume knobs are the new Coke Classic
2 great and realistic reviewers, I’ve watch lots of there videos and there all honest a straight to the point reviews.
You can heel toe with the stock pedals if you twist your foot counter clockwise, however the Acuity pedal spacer makes it much easier. Well worth the $100
It kills my ankle trying to heel toe this car. I gave up trying.
"Hoon the family" may be my new favorite phrase.
Really like your channel. In depth and unique topics standing out from the crowd.
Nice job guys in linking pod cast and quick videos for you tube. Keep it up!
You two are great. Acura really needs to take notes, it would be so refreshing to see a new type s.
TLX Type S is on the way!
Yeah it’s looking like a tlx and mdx are going to get type s versions.
Josiah Thibodeaux Acura needs to take notes? Wait a minute... so Honda needs to take notes from themselves???
(Jeremy Irons voiceover) “Precisely”.
@@JohanSalvattore Acura is owned by Honda / is Honda's premium brand yes, but they develop their cars separately and in America. They can certainly learn a thing or two from how Honda has been doing lately..
You hear that fellas “ultimate dad car” .... yessssh
I put 18 inch rims on mine as son as I could....,vastly improved ride quality.....great car.
What wheel/tire combo? I could use an all season/bad weather set.
I love the Civic Type R 😍 soon will be picking one up 👍
What color? I got pmm.
That's Just Awesome
it's an amazing car !!
@@PharmacyBoy89 What pharmacy school did you go to?
Take mine for a spin and see how you like it.
Here in South Africa, we had it in coris grey. Lovely color, lovely car. It turns heads. You see few in South African roads. I can take it over the German AWD rivals
18" wheels and some tires that last a little longer is all this car needs. I dig it so much. I can't help but think that a Veloster N just might be the right play though when price is considered.
The Veloster N looks amazing, in red not the blue lol, the Type R belongs in a Manga
I have a 2014 civic si without a volume knob and it's no big deal. I use the steering wheel volume buttons all the time
Great review guys! Miss seeing you in the Venice office. Keep up the reviews!
I really disaggree about the steering in comfort mode, it is way too light. I always feel like I've suddenly lost connecition to the car and it is terrible. The only time I switch to Comfort is when I someone asks about it.
Great fast blast. Golf R owner here, so I'm definitely in the hot hatch camp. This thing is so tempting as a next car. However, my wife, who never comments on cars, expresses disgust every time she sees one. She calls it a "Transformer Car." Honda, how about a Type R "Touring" with styling a 40 year old could drive to work in?
First I bought a MK7.5 Golf R and the next year I bought a Civic Type R. Both are awesome cars.
Think of the Type R as a Golf R that isn't an Endless Money Pit. Better Resale Value and the plastic won't rot as you watch. And door seals that last 20 years.
I agree partially but the Type R heritage is about looking sporty and aggressive. It does not look that different from the Stock Civic just has more Aero parts which helps performance. Looks are just subjective, cars need to be judged more on their capabilties rather than perceived image.
@@amazoidal My personal experience with a Golf R, after 60,000 miles, is that I have done nothing except scheduled maintenance and tires. I can't speak to the reliability of "tuned" examples, as mine is bone stock. But I have been very happy.
I'm 44 and drive it to work everyday. no regrets. But there are spy shots of the 2020 type R with an Si style wing and possible 19" wheels. So if you want to trade down force for regular civic looks that might be the car for you. Oh, and my wife thinks the car would be boring without the wing, she says it makes the car.
You guys are very informative love your content.
Great review guys! I am actually one of the people who like the look of the new Civics. I even "mostly" like the back end. I don't mind the front end of the Civics nearly as much as the Accords. At least the hood looks proportionate to the car. The hood of the Accord is about a foot too long.
Great review but you guys didn’t address the transmission issue that many of the 2018 models had. Has it been fixed?
That was only for 2017 afaik.
Not on all type r , had mine for two years and no problems
Same here
I have a 2019. haven't had any problems
I f-ing want A Type-R so bad!!!!!!!!🤤🤤🤤
Get one, worth every dollar, at msrp of course
Ya.... I'd rather an electric for gas savings.
I’m so excited to get this car in the future 😍
A great driving experience with no compromises! Such a great car!
YOU CAN HEEL-TOE! ... you just need the acuity spacer to bring the gas forward and left :/.... so from factory yeah it’s hard but there’s the auto rev match... but I’m a traditionalist so the first mod I put on mine was the gas pedal spacer! Worlds different! If you guys are ever in philly please drive it!
It's funny, my wife had a 2014 Civic Si with no volume knob and loved it. In December, she bought a blue Type R and had the choice of 2018 or 2019, both in the showroom side by side. She bought the 2018 because she preferred the no knob look, so I guess a market does exist.
Your wife is an anomaly
Gotta be honest I like the no knob look too. I don't really listen to music all that often, and if I do I'll play it at a semi-low volume and forget its playing. So I don't really plan on searching for volume while driving anyway. That being said, the knob is definitely more practical, just looks ugly.
The styling has grown on me and who would thing the CTR would emerge as the best of the rally cars
There was a rally race in Japan about a year ago. Birth Racing Project used this civic in the rally stages.
I've seen the Type R without the spoiler on it. They have to take it off in order to do window tint. It looks horrid without that spoiler. It needs to stay.
It really does need to stay.
I been watching you guys since 2009 best show ever
The car’s styling looks like a robot Gundam. Not a problem for me! I do think I’d prefer 19 inch wheels on it after wearing down the 20’s.
If your feet are too small to properly heel toe downshift and rev match the pedals, it only costs $15 dollars to replace the pedals for bigger ones😂
Dreamy same
5:24 Excellent point! This is the reason I am taking my car to the track (stock with just exhaust) to see how I do and what parts I think I need. I really like the balance if the car already, it is neutral handling. I may do an anti lift kit and solid bushings, to help with on throttle turning and make things even more solid but going to see how it does stock first.
Honda using a slider for stereo volume was very dumb. Glad they fixed it. Agree with you on the handbrake thing, too. I hate electric parking brakes, especially on a sports (or sporty) car.
Do this car still have problems with grinding gears ?
I'm around Memphis/Little Rock with travelling for work and I don't see many of these around. I really like them but I already have a built and boosted BRZ for a daily and a 13B Swapped Mx-5 among a few other projects for fun.
My next project is to find a salvage CH-R and do a powertrain swap in it, will prob have to stick with transverse straight 4 but there's gotta be better options that will fit with more output. I love the weird way they look and basically everything about them besides the fact they're dead slow compared to even a Camry from my experience.
That CH-R swap sounds insane... I love it!
Great video! As an OG M2 owner it blows my mind that those are quicker on the ring. I wonder if that is because of the higher top speed on the civic.
I think yes, coz of the top end speed. Ive seen videos of them here in YT and in our type r group as well where drivers pushed them and theyre hitting 171 to 175 mph. Its crazy.
Isnt it easier to heel toe when its further apart?? I find it hard to do it when they are too close.
Toe on brake heel on accel...
Joon4Gb Yang I guess it depends on your own heel-toe approach. For guys like me who use the ball of the foot on the brakes and the outside of the foot on the throttle, you want the pedals closer together. This might work out well for your style though.
The CTR seems to be growing more on Paul comparing to his first review. It seems that Honda built the new civic platform with the CTR in mind.
Upgrading from my FN2 to this next year, can't wait. This colour is great.
Umm doesn't the steering wheel have volume buttons?
Yup
So why was he whining about no volume knob?
@@jaeyocho because he's old
LOL
Yes, and it works well. I always use that rather than the touchscreen. I like the new knobs, which my 2018 CTR does not have, but it's hardly a deal maker/breaker.
Cool; dies it have the oil dilution issues that the other Honda turbos have? Because that would kinda be a deal breaker for most people who are in the know.
No, the 2.0 in the CTR, Accord and RDX hasn't had the same issues that the 1.5 has.
Any idea if the si has this problem? I got a 2019 si three months ago and heard of this problem after I got the car. That sucks.
ycart tosey Unfortunately I looked it up and it’s a Gdi 1.5 L
The 2019 edition of the 2005 STi. Both ugly (and loveable like a pug), but great to drive and lots of practicality. Fits a lot of enthusiast’s needs.
You guys should do a review on the Gen 2 FK8s. 2020-2021. The updates are very noticable on hard driving.
Following up on my previous comment of keeping the car stock. I did end up adding 18x10 wheels and with wide tires and spoon lowering springs and my laptimes are significantly lower. Passing cars that cost much more such as the 911,Cayman, Corvettes and M2s... although this is in the intermediate groups and some people don't know how to drive their cars. All I did was just enhance what Honda already had. I can pretty much place the car wherever I want on the track and on the limits of adhesion (or when the re71rs are overheated) I just get understeer which is easily mitigated by just letting off, it is very neutral and the lift off oversteer is minimal and doesn't bite back.
They're everywhere? I live in Chicago and I've seen about 2 so far. Maybe 3. Must be a West Coast car or Midwest folks storing them for the track.
I live in the West coast and I have yet to see one. I have seen more Huracans than this.
Down here in florida and ive only seen 4 being used for daily driver status since theyve been out.
I’ve seen like five since released. They’re not very common
@@-SP. I've seen more Bentley Bentaygas than Type Rs, no kidding.
I see lots of cars like rare gto Ferrari's and GTR's, focus RS, Lamborghini's.
I have only seen 3 type R's on the road. No one is buying them. 10 k mark makes me laugh for a Honda.
Is that s 360 cam on the roof? Nice tracking!
So you can't make heel toe work well on these pedals either? With your size feet? And serious driving chops? I feel better now about my challenges getting my size 9 shoes to do the job. So in this case, rev match is a good thing.
The touring package is coming out with a smaller wing. Just FYI.
Outdoor Layne beautiful car 🚘
@@layne4376 well theyve sold over 30000 type Rs and none to a 16 year old
Instead of the huge wing, Honda should have a trunk lid spoiler. That wing is overkill.
I thought that they increased the volume of the exhaust tone or something 😂
Currently driving an Si. Like it, but looking for more. Thinking once it's paid off get into either one of these, a Veloster N, or keeping the the Si as a daily and buying a nice C6 or 5.0 mustang as a weekender. Is the Type R a big enough upgrade to keep a neurotic car enthusiast at bay?
100 hp is noticeably different, but if you're around a place with a lot of straight long roads, get a C6 or a 5.0. If you have curvy roads that you visit often, the Vel N or the CTR is your best bet.
How does the type r compare to the WRX regarding ride quality and nvh.
I own a 2017 WRX, and road noise is unbearable at highways speeds. I am thinking of trading in for a 2019 type r or a 2014 cayman. I rode along a friends cayman and it feels solid, no weird vibrations, and road noise is a lot better. I have never been in a CTR, so I don't know how it compares in that sense.
Yes a E brake handle would be very nice to have over a E-brake button
Is the low profile 20" rims life span is shorter?
Never driven in a auto rev match car before. So I'm aware that it makes heel-toeing irrelevant, but wouldn't that also make the car drive like an automatic since the shifting is so seamless?
Had my R 19 for a few months now, still totally in love with this thing #26306
The "R" in "Type R" stands for "Rawsome".
Can’t decide: white or dark grey
Type r or a wrx Sti? Can you compare them? Wrx comes with sunroof and safety sensing
Sti's are notorious for cracking ring glands and pistons...JS
Just noticed the roof cam can panoramic. Is that new or I’ve not noticed before.
I thought the channel died, didnt realize they went to amazon prime.
Doesn't change the fact that the channel died...
I'm 52 and 5'5" and can heal toe it with the exact same effort as my DC2R and CRX. The only difference with my car and the one is this review is RHD. Wish my 2019 got your physical buttons though, ours didn't get them
EverydayDriver,
Have you guys driven a Veloster N?
Yes, we enjoyed it and included it in a TV episode called “The Middles”. It’s episode 1 of Season 5, now available on Amazon Prime and Vimeo. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@EverydayDriver awesome! Heading over to watch it
I'm a 57 year old grandad, I pick my blue Type R up the day after tomorrow, I'm like a child at Christmas.
That grey is all new huh? Because I could swear that I bought the same color Type R two full years ago when I bought my 2017 in September 2017
jameswillard1 in the US we didn’t have grey originally
peter nuon I’m in the US actually Peter
Man U got lucky cuz all they had when I bought mine cuz all they had were red white blue and black
Maybe they fixed the clutch spring problem. You didn't mention that it's built in the old Spitfire factory in England, which Honda is going to close soon.
When is the 2020 Track version review video?
The return of the volume knob on the 2019 is great, but don't forget that the climate control and fan buttons were added back on as well. 7:31 wow!
Man i love that color.
The type R is the functional embodiment of a Pokémon in car form...
lmao and I love it
Honda’s Rev Match is the way they keep you in the dealership. Almost any CEL will disable the Rev Matching System. That was kind of sly on their part.
SpinRush_C1 whats a CEL?
Eric Heng Check Engine Light
Are they still charging $10k over MSRP?
I heel toe in my civic type r everyday... You just have to get used to it...
Anybody know what road they were driving on?
Is it true that 2020 will be the last year for Type R? This will make it a good buy and holding on to it.
Production will be moved from England to Japan. That's all I've heard so far.
Biggest improvement is the physical buttons on the infotainment system.
Great video gents. I wish this car had more grown up looks but I am sure it drives way better then it looks.
In my opinion this car isn’t geared towards 40 year olds the target market is 20’s-mid 30’s
@@jlopez1017d maybe so... but when i was in my mid 20s I dont think I could have afforded $35-40k. Even though, its one of these types of cars that screams "boy racer" but yet checks so many boxes for adults: 4 doors, hatch, reliable, comfortable, relatively safe, etc. Even at 41, i want it.
Point.Shift.Drive yeah same I remember I wanted a STI really bad now that I can afford one (used) I couldn’t bring myself to buy one it’s too boy racer for me and I’m only 26 lol
"Used they're even better!"
Um, these things dont depreciate. Look it up, its crazy.
Used ones are basically going for MSRP! Its ridiculous!
does the SI have rev match?
A year late, but the Si does not have rev match. The pedal placement on that is just as bad as it is on the Type R. A lot of people run throttle pedal spacers on both cars, and for good reason.
Lots of cars available, but you can’t set them. When you do find one the dealer adds 8 K to the price.
The wing is great, if you don't like it, get a Civic Si.
Love my ‘19 Aegean Blue meanie!!!
Did you have to pay a price premium?
Bill Dean No, I didn’t pay any premium. Just MSRP. And I was glad for that.
I was able to put a full size piano keyboard with piano stand, a huge long computer desk, tv stand, and many more stuff in the back with seats folded down! That is absurd! Haha.
I think Todd genuinely likes it.
What is rev match? I've heard this description many times. It's been a while since I owned a manual.
Rev match began with the Nissan 370z and is now available on many manual cars. It automatically blips the throttle / revs the engine to the right RPM when you touch the stick to the next intended shift gate. A cool technology that makes heel-toeing irrelevant, and generally can be turned off for those that don't want it (true on the Type R as well). Thanks for watching and asking!
@@EverydayDriver I understand. Thanks for schooling me (-;
Only thing is there’s no solution to the overheating of the engine for the track goers
There's easy solutions for that actually
I got a Type-R!!!! Yay!!!!😁😁😁
I had no trouble heel-and-toeing. It was easy peasy.
great performance, but with the dealer markups it ends up competing with more balanced cars. In the real world, not on a track its not for everyone.
Ditch the 20 inch wheels for 18’s
