Baby before you buy just make sure to drive the Honda CTR and be aggressive with the clutch to make sure it doesn’t grind. Run the AC and check the back side of the valve cover for oil leaks. Yeah get something like a brand new golf r like I did in 2016 with DCC nav and upgraded stereo with sub for 38k brand spanking new. Sure it's not as hardcore or track focused.... However it's just as fast, interior is stunning, driving modes are awesome and mag ride (dcc) is individually adjustable, while being so practical and comfortable and well made... Pure German.... And if you want to get a little more hardcore the mk7 platform was the best of the best for mods... Grab $1,500 get yourself a downpipe and a stage two APR tune and tour walking mustang GTs, SS, STIs, focus RS, even f80 m3s. With my DSG I was doin 3.5 to 60 with a couple bolt-ons and a tune. And yes the type R and the golf are are completely different cars and the type R is way more fun. That's the truth. Even while my golf R had supercar acceleration, it was not close to as engaging as a stock Civic Type R. But most of us aren't going to the track everyday... So the Golf R makes way more sense with DSG for DD as well as spirited driving. The type R is spirited all the time and for 35k for a brand new one ... I'll go and get one. But not 3 years old with 40,000 MI. No way
Same sentiment, they were 28-32 k used with low miles for a while. Then COVID happened and now they are MSRP with 30k miles. They can keep that beaten civic.

Great review Joe! However, the 2017-2019s are still great cars and as great as black looks I would have to go Championship White or Boost Blue
the new CTR has a suede steering wheel which is inexcusable. there's no way that will hold up over time with dirt & oil from your (or your mechanics) hands. there's a reason cars have used plastic or leather steering wheels all these years. here's a fun test. go buy a mr clean magic eraser and go over your steering wheel and then tell me how on earth you're going to effectively clean a suede wheel the same way. i go over all the touch points after i pick my car up from service and the shifter, wheel, seat belt, door handles are always gross because their hands are filthy.
Jonathan Lindhome Yeah that’s the only drawback of the new one but you can just get a black leather cover and it will prolong the life of the wheel. Alcantara is great for track driving but Honda should have kept a leather wheel for the facelifted version.
@@aaromon43 how is it inexcusable? I’d like to add that cars have used suede and Alcantara steering wheels all these years too, just in higher end sports cars and race cars. Great review as always Joe and great background knowledge! I LOVE my 2019 Type R. With the rumor that 2021 may be the last year of the Civic Type R be it new or used, the best Type R to get is the one you can actually find. Fortunately I was able to get mine new and MSRP but scoring a used one with a warranty might be that sweet spot. BTW It looks like someone needs to clamp down that cover on the car's computer housing. Again keep up the great work Joe!

I went to NJ to look for a Type R. They had ONE. I asked to look at it and they didn't even want me sitting in it. I couldn't even test drive it. Let me put down 42 grand and not even test drive a car. I immediately walked away. The same dealership is selling the LE for 90 grand. Yes, 90 grand. This is why I bought a 2019 Type R with 4k miles from Carvana. I'm didn't want to deal with salesman and this BS. I paid $37.8k. No BS.
I just got a type R 2020 black and I love it, mpg driving on comfort mode 29 mpg, 297 miles until gas light turns on, and I spend 30 bucks filling up tank with 93 premium gas in Illinois.
just having these will hold up pretty well in the long run, especially because the newer type r's will look more conservative i think. the boi-racer look will be no more in the future. and plus, production of type R's has been halted due to lack of parts, and i heard canada is no longer accepting type R orders
That car has 07/2018 built date with 30K miles. Regardless how you splice it, it's nearing end of warranty. Not to mention those 30K miles were hard and probably abusive. It's also been robbed of OEM Honda Type R wheels and replaced by some generic garbage. No way in hell that's a $35K car. I wouldn't pay $20K for it. I wouldn't pay $35K even for brand new one. It's not the dealer's fault. If people would stop paying $10K mark up on a CIVIC, the price would drop like a rock.
Awesome video. Always enjoy your videos and always waiting for new ones. I’m a proud owner of a 2019 Honda Civic Type R Rallye Red with 17k miles. Everything stock, tires are still in good condition. Always looking forward for the weekend. It’s my awesome weekend car. It’s my getaway from all my stress during the week.
Hard to buy pre own nowadays....Everybody thinks they belong in the track, raping the car engine like no tomorrow...When type R, starts to overheat or show problems, they flip that CTR...
Hahahahaha 1:36!!!! Love your reviews dude! Proud 2019 STI owner but I’m on the fence on getting a new Type R. My local dealer just called me to inform me they have a Black one. Your absolutely right about black hiding all the craziness going on. IDK though uuugh! Going from AWD to FWD is killing me but just the shear performance of the Type R and the Honda nostalgia keeps telling me yes!
I’d like to actually argue that the mustang ecoboost is a direct competitor of it as well, probably not one of the first cars you’d think of but it’s very similar to all of the other cars you listed when it comes to the engine. The difference is it’s a rwd coupe lol.
This was great man, thank you so much. I'm considering a used type R, this is exactly the content I need! Would you consider doing a used 2014 WRX or STI hatch?
I've been obsessing over this car for a while now, and then you release a video about it 😂. I dont have the means for another car and also dont wanna daily it which is my problem. One day I'll get it 🙏
Considering they both got similar value, with no markup, yes. With markup, no. I wouldn't buy a used one with some crazy markup as the new one does. $8K markup was asked from the Honda dealership.
I went to get my oil changed at my dealership where I bought my Honda and they had a 2018 Type R for around $35k. No way I'm getting a used Type R for that much lmao...
I sat in one and was able to test drive it and instantly fell in love! How's that 2nd gear grind and did you experience it in your 2017 before you traded/sold it away? You looked comfortable back in the driver's seat of that. We gotta get you and Vic in a CTR at the Tail of the Dragon ASAP!
My question would be why was it even traded in in the first place? Everyone knows that the inherent problems between the 2017 and 2019s are issues involving gear lock up. Supposedly the issue was taken care of already with the 2020 models but that's still remains to be seen since we're only 3/4 of the year through. If there isn't one report of a gear grind the entire year on a 2020, then I'll believe the issues have been truly addressed. That would probably be the time for someone on the fence to get the all-clear sign and dive into a 2020 pre-owned model instead. 2021s are coming out next month I believe. 2020s was a short production year because I'd Covid. Michelin Pilot 4S is what I'm going for 18x9.5
MSRP on a 2018 type R, is like what $36.5k? Over 30k miles and dealers are asking $35k? Amazing. I really like the Veloster N but no way it holds value like the type R.
Joe, big fan of your channel. Any chance you can one day (if you can find one) do a full review of a 2014 GT500?? Really curious to see how that car handles and what you think of it in action
Raiti's Rides awesome! You’re my go to for car info, and with me getting a new car next year. I am torn between the gt350 (which I know you love) and the 2014 gt500. So I really hope you can track one down because that video I would love to hear what you think is worth it!
Not big fan of hatchbacks unless its a sport back like the Audis and the Stingers. This car is not too bad but the price on these civic hot hatches is too high IMHO. Thanks for bringing it to us Joe! 👍

The Market Adjustment was the only reason that put me off from buying this car. I went to my local Honda Dealership about a month ago to buy one of these things with cash in hand ready to make the purchase, the whole time the sales guy never mentioned the Mark Up until it was time to do the paperwork; that is when they slapped the additional $7,500.00 ontop of the sticks plus all the BS dealer added accessories I got pissed at this point and I was about to walk away the Sales Manager came to me and said they are willing work out a deal where he was "take off" the cost for the dealer add on but even that was not good enough and I proceeded to get up again; only at this point he said he would not only remove the "dealer add on" but he would also reduce the Market Adjustment by half to $3,750.00 Long story short; we did not make a deal not because I was not willing to spend that much more over MSRP
Phillip Khong I went to a dealer today and they pulled the same BS they wanted a 5k market adjustment so frustrating trying to justify to them 42k is not worth buying a Honda
@@timlackner7631 I hear you there man and the sad part is that the dealers has the manufactured so wrapped around their fingers that they are not willing to do anything about that Adding to the problem is that 40 something thousand is still within the realm of obtainable to a lot of folks and they keep buying them; people need to stop paying these dealers mark up and let the vehicle sit, only at that point the dealership will be force to stop marking these vehicles up.
Great review Joe, I love the Civic Type R! this is your 3rd review of a Type R, first you reviewed a 2019 Civic Type R in Sonic grey pearl at Ferman BMW, 2nd you reviewed the 2020 Boost Blue Civic Type R.
The look still isn’t good to me but I agree that black cloaks that well. These things don’t depreciate is the only knock on buying this wonderful machine used.
No. I like the Honda more but the Subie has awd which you might miss. Also it doesn’t make financial sense since the trade in value of the STI will probably be a lot less than the cost of a Type R.
The dealer asks for $ 35k with 31k miles and autotrader is new 2020 for 37k +, I buy it new even if I pay $ 5k more, it is 3 years newer with the full warranty and you are sure that the car was not abused, it is my opinion
I'd personally would never buy one of these used, These are priced right to where someone with a decent job in their early/mid 20s can afford one. Hell, I'm sure more than a few spoiled high school kids probably drive these. But my point is most are probably being bought by young boy racers who are driving the absolute piss out of them. Unless one of these was a one owner driven by some boomer around the block every other weekend I'd never buy one used. Given the resale value you might as well just buy a new one and eliminate the possibility of abuse.
I have a 2019, it's a very nice car, so much fun to drive and good looking, the downside, every time I take it to the dealer something has to be replaced, rotors, pads, liquids, so on. Also, tires won't last 10K unless you pay good money. So high maintenance car, I am selling it

Really want to get a type r....ended up getting the Si and put a tune on it and it really made the car faster....would still like to get a type r though
It's always a good idea to buy a used car but with this car having a type R... it keeps the good resale value.. so it's hard to say.. i bought my DC2 type R new.. beause.. A used integra type r was selling for 28000 and brand new one was 32000..( canadian dollar ) in 2001 it was no brainer.. for me to get it brand new.
I'd rather order and have a integra type R (rsx) body style 10k less and it's a pure fun machine with that sound and amazing body style. Shipped to America there only 12k-25k depending on mileage.
I drove one of these and got an AWD Stinger 3.3TT--this would fly off the road trying to keep up with an AWD Stinger--btw I paid 36k for the Stinger--Type R's were 39k.
Depreciation is so low that it makes almost no sense to buy this used. Average I saw on autotrader is roughly 33-35k for cars with 50k miles. At that point it’s worth it just to get new.

🤡
Wow it comes with a golf ball holder? That makes up for the ADM, tbh
Hate that dealer mark up. I am learning towards the Veloster N
Vtech engines are also better!
The black hood looks like it has a indent?
Awesome video. Always enjoy your videos and always waiting for new ones.
I’m a proud owner of a 2019 Honda Civic Type R Rallye Red with 17k miles. Everything stock, tires are still in good condition. Always looking forward for the weekend. It’s my awesome weekend car. It’s my getaway from all my stress during the week.
What the hell do you do on weekends? 17k miles one a one year old car and you drive it only on the weekends? Damn...
Bill DeSha 🤣🤣
Hard to buy pre own nowadays....Everybody thinks they belong in the track, raping the car engine like no tomorrow...When type R, starts to overheat or show problems, they flip that CTR...
🤣😂🤣exactly
Only Rati can make these corny ass jokes and still keep me watching his videos.
Thanks brother! I appreciate you having my back!
Hey that’s my car! I traded it in to Reeves BMW. Was time for me to upgrade to a 2020 BMW M2C.
How bad did you beat on it. lol
Cool
U mean downgrade :(
@@lbccrx1rex933 c'mon now lol
Nice... now tell us how much have you spent on maintenance?
I’d like to actually argue that the mustang ecoboost is a direct competitor of it as well, probably not one of the first cars you’d think of but it’s very similar to all of the other cars you listed when it comes to the engine. The difference is it’s a rwd coupe lol.
Yea mustang is good choice but very different car. To me it looks nicer but not as much interior. Also it's different feeling driving mustang then tR
This was great man, thank you so much. I'm considering a used type R, this is exactly the content I need! Would you consider doing a used 2014 WRX or STI hatch?
I've been obsessing over this car for a while now, and then you release a video about it 😂. I dont have the means for another car and also
dont wanna daily it which is my problem. One day I'll get it 🙏
Lots of people don't like a loud cars, that's one of the reason why i like Honda's
Nice review on Type R! I saw 3 Type R with Titans wheels for sale and wish that I could afford this car but hopefully someday!!
34k for a used type R seems crazy but I hope it's true because I got a 2019 fk8 😅
Considering they both got similar value, with no markup, yes. With markup, no. I wouldn't buy a used one with some crazy markup as the new one does. $8K markup was asked from the Honda dealership.
Agree on living in the country with this car, it’s perfect for that, with the twisty and windy roads!
Always worry with a used 6MT what the previous guy did to the gears.
You forgot to mention the bonnet (hood) is aluminium and I've got 316 HP in my FK8 here in the UK.
MSRP on a 2018 type R, is like what $36.5k? Over 30k miles and dealers are asking $35k? Amazing. I really like the Veloster N but no way it holds value like the type R.
veleoster🤮 interior made of just and just hard cheap plastic. Sound is very solid
Dealers in my area are all discounting Veloster N close to Civic Si’s price. It’s a great value car if you don’t mind the plasticky interior.
Joe, big fan of your channel. Any chance you can one day (if you can find one) do a full review of a 2014 GT500?? Really curious to see how that car handles and what you think of it in action
Thanks for your great support! I am working on tracking one down so hopefully soon. I've been wanting to drive one.
Looking at how other owners tune this car, I do not recommend buying a used Type R that has been ECU tuned.
The number is definitely important … Honda numbered the chassis as they rolled out the factory. Not who made the dealership first.
Would always buy this new. Most of these young kids abuse the car and don't know how to properly shift. Most in the FK8 Club abuse this car, in the wrong way.
Yeeeeeeeeeessssssss maaaaaaaan!!!! Checking in Joe!!! Honda did right by us fiiiiiiinaaaaally bringing the CTR Stateside!!! 👋🏽💪🏽👍🏼❤❤❤❤🚗💨💨💨💨#RaitisRides #OnThrottle #ToTheDoorPanel #TwinkiesForDays #CrownVic #OnThrottleAgain #Zonkmeister #VTECJustKickedInYo #OnThrottleAllDay #HondaCivicTypeR

How are you Joe? BLACKED OUT CIVIC LET'S GO!!! TWO BLACKED OUT VEHICLES IN 1 DAY!!!
Doing well man! I know you like these color combos.
@@RaitisRides Yes indeed!
Just got me a 2018 and loving it
The Market Adjustment was the only reason that put me off from buying this car.
I went to my local Honda Dealership about a month ago to buy one of these things with cash in hand ready to make the purchase, the whole time the sales guy never mentioned the Mark Up until it was time to do the paperwork; that is when they slapped the additional $7,500.00 ontop of the sticks plus all the BS dealer added accessories
I got pissed at this point and I was about to walk away the Sales Manager came to me and said they are willing work out a deal where he was "take off" the cost for the dealer add on but even that was not good enough and I proceeded to get up again; only at this point he said he would not only remove the "dealer add on" but he would also reduce the Market Adjustment by half to $3,750.00
Long story short; we did not make a deal not because I was not willing to spend that much more over MSRP
Phillip Khong I went to a dealer today and they pulled the same BS they wanted a 5k market adjustment so frustrating trying to justify to them 42k is not worth buying a Honda
@@timlackner7631
I hear you there man and the sad part is that the dealers has the manufactured so wrapped around their fingers that they are not willing to do anything about that
Adding to the problem is that 40 something thousand is still within the realm of obtainable to a lot of folks and they keep buying them; people need to stop paying these dealers mark up and let the vehicle sit, only at that point the dealership will be force to stop marking these vehicles up.
Great review Joe, I love the Civic Type R! this is your 3rd review of a Type R, first you reviewed a 2019 Civic Type R in Sonic grey pearl at Ferman BMW, 2nd you reviewed the 2020 Boost Blue Civic Type R.
He did a comparison side by side with a type R and SI too
The look still isn’t good to me but I agree that black cloaks that well. These things don’t depreciate is the only knock on buying this wonderful machine used.
I’ve never been this early for one of your videos I love them man they make my day
I see your hellcat in the background!
Still highly considering. Is it worth trading in a WRX STI for one?
The only way to truly tell is to drive one and see.
no way bro
losing awd for fwd
No. I like the Honda more but the Subie has awd which you might miss. Also it doesn’t make financial sense since the trade in value of the STI will probably be a lot less than the cost of a Type R.
Way better reliability
The dealer asks for $ 35k with 31k miles and autotrader is new 2020 for 37k +, I buy it new even if I pay $ 5k more, it is 3 years newer with the full warranty and you are sure that the car was not abused, it is my opinion
Well, the markup actually doesn’t keep the resale high. For obvious reasons.
So high maintenance car, I am selling it
Honestly what was the cost a year for like break pads etc I’m looking at a 2018 type r with 36k miles for 38k idk
Trunk yes, space yes, but why would they restrict the back seat for only 2 passengers like that ! Same with veloster n.
It ain’t a bus my dude, is a sport car, only one aside from the dodge performance cars that got 4 doors
Love the car. I actually HATE how it looks and how bloated it looks but the car speaks for itself.
AGREED!
Im a new subscriber and been watching all your videos.
And today when I was at red in my Ford Fiesta SE the light turned green and yelled ON THROTTLE then mashed the peddle and ..............
My car went nowhere 😥🤷🏾♂️🙏🏾 February 2021 Dodge challenger SXT (or hopefully RT V8) here I come
Oh Joe just love the one liners you throw out there mate. The 4.9 seconds, but man can't mixing his nuts. 🤣👌
Thanks David! I am so glad I can bring some laughs your way!

I want to buy Raiti's used Honda Civic Type R!! XD
Good Job Raiti!
And never mix the nuts!!
If no dealer markup, it’s a good vehicle. Many dealers markup $15k-$20k. I’d rather get an M2 for that price range.
Except when the M2 starts to give problems, No thank U then the Honda reliability and lower repair cost shine thru….I’m going Honda
@@craigsbuyer2270 only make sense if it’s sold at MSRP. $20k over for a honda? Come on.
Can't believe it took me a week to see this. Excellent review as usual.
JJ ~ the R stands for "radical" it's true, I talked to Mr. Honda & that's what he told me : P butt really these are nice for guys who are into tuner cars, ya can Frankenstein them, tweak them, etc. I've seen a few on the streets totally ripping it up. don't know if I'd end up with one, but I appreciate them as a decent car. - tony
While I just couldn't get past the looks to buy one, being black really does help. But if you want performance, this is the car to get.
Not for that price I'll get a Hyundai velo N brand new with the performance pak for 30k , and take 3k in mods close to same hp and brand new
Thanks for letting me share this one with you Jose. The Veloster N is a great car!
Velo N is joke car
I was just thinking about getting a used one, so thank you for your thoughts and things to look at as I'm browsing them!!
Did you get one?
I think I would pay 40k for a 2020 with no miles on it. If I couldn't find a '20 at sticker then a '19 at sticker with no miles might be worthy.
Glad to find aproval on my pursache of a 7000km 2nd hand FK8. And it's the best car i'll ever have.
In my area (California) dealerships have control. Either pay the $7,500-$10,000 markup or get the fuck out. Used is unfortunately the only semi reasonable option.
Save a few bucks and get a pre-owned Type R. Sounds like a winner to me. Do you miss yours after driving this one Joe? Thanks for sharing it! 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
Really want to get a type r....ended up getting the Si and put a tune on it and it really made the car faster....would still like to get a type r though
Why do all reviews hate the bumper grills? Isnt it better than a empty space?
My favorite color is now black 🔥
The number badge doesnt mean anything???
It isn't properly sequenced.

Absolutely love the styling, especially on 2020.
I drove one of these and got an AWD Stinger 3.3TT--this would fly off the road trying to keep up with an AWD Stinger--btw I paid 36k for the Stinger--Type R's were 39k.
Fly off the road? Wouldn’t expect car knowledge from someone who sheds $36k on a kia with no heritage or performance history.

nice review as always. I recommend you review a BMW I3S I feel you will enjoy it. Its a very underrated car.
Nice video, my dream car. Couldn’t help but notice the purple demon in the background at the beginning, haha.
Always a better idea to buy a brand new performance car. Buy new to keep that model alive.
Going to look at it later if it’s still there 😉
Very cool!
Joe you're as Rocking as the car 😎😎❤
Best reviewer everrrr!!❤
Please take my name in next of your video Jaskirat ❤❤
Love from India❤❤
Thanks JOE!!!! Perfect timing as Im in the market :)
I say it’s a bad idea since there is a corolla hybrid out now . I rather get the corolla hybrid
That's pretty neat
Depreciation is so low that it makes almost no sense to buy this used. Average I saw on autotrader is roughly 33-35k for cars with 50k miles. At that point it’s worth it just to get new.
Been playing with the idea of buying a mustang GT350 or GT or the type R....
