When the HMS Invincible came to New Zealand after the Falklands with Sea Harriers we did a mock attack on the carrier with our Skyhawks when it was off the coast. They never picked us up on radar or saw us coming and couldn't scramble the Harriers in time. A Sea Harrier trained on shore at Ohakea for a week with our A-4's and we got kills on the Harrier. They key is good training and good weapons, we had radar and sidewinders on our Skyhawks.

I suspect the compressor stalls at high AoA were due to the placement of the engine intakes and lack of a pressure recovery system. The chin intake on the Viper soaked up a lot of design hours, and kept getting shorter and shorter until it was impinging on the landing gear. Turns out the very short Viper intake was a huge advantage in the engine breathing well, especially at high AoA. It did need to grow a bit for the "Big Mouth" 50s, but even that was easier because it was so short.

In real life, the update didn't make it to any version other than the JA37, which would exclude the AJS37 version in DCS as well. Neither the AJ37 nor the AJS37 were really supposed to be used as fighters other than out of utter desperation, so I suppose it makes sense.

  • @jorgenpersson662

The thing is that AJS37 Viggen is the ground attack version of Viggen. It's made for low fast ground attacks NOT dogfights.
It would be a better choice to use JA37 Viggen instead which is the air dominance fighter version of Viggen with stronger engine (without engine stall) and it also has a completely different electronics with better radar and inbuilt cannon.

    Love the A-4
Would be really cool to see you fly it in RNZAF colours in a future vid
    Great content as always GS

Another advantage of the a4 - its roll rate. If you get defensive test your bandits roll rate it a downhill vertical scissors. If you have the altitude of course

Exactly Jester... ^~^ which is why the A-4 and F-5 are used in dissimilar air-combat training. They simply drive opponents crazy with what they can do.. 0~o
edit; bloody 'ell, my inability to spell at times even astound me.... 0~o I can English damn-it... >~

Good Job in the A4. The Fighter weapons school used the A4 to represent a low tech, subsonic fighter threat (a MiG 17 or J5)
So, well done - you just used a MiG 17 analogue to kill a more advanced aircraft.

The amount of times GS had to clarify the time of fight that goes 2 circles is probably having the oposite effect, cause I for sure aint calling it a rate fight anymore.

If GS wins, I shall call it a "RAPE" fight
If he loses, it'll be a "GREAT" Fight
If one of the pilots gets shot in the head?
I'd say that was a hit in the "GRAPE" fight.
If someone pulls some magic outta their ass? I guess thats a "SNAPE" Fight.
IF GS suckers him in and reverses its "BAIT" fight

I like how I am learning dogfighting terms and tactics. I used to think that the compressor stalls was an attempt by the aircraft to combat high pressure flying; like I thought it was designed to make that noise for advantage. Will DCS use an improved Viggen?

The Viggen is a massive Airliner engine, with an added Afterburner. It has an absurd Power to weight ratio for an Aircraft that old.

The A-4 is a cool aircraft. My country (New Zealand) used to have a few as their only combat capable fighter from the 60s up until early 2000s when the government cancelled lease order of some replacement F-16s and then cancelled the A-4 entirely 🙄. Now we have nothing but a few helicopters and transport planes 😭

@@EndTimeDreams we had some great pilots. They were all just made redundant and now even if we did get a new fleet of aircraft, we wouldn't have anyone to fly them

The A-4 is such an underrated plane. It has an insane roll rate. Very agile. And a great payload capacity and range. I can’t wait for a full fidelity Skyhawks.

When you're fighting guns only you are often so close I am surprised there are not more collisions. May I suggest that next time you attach some ribs and burgers to the wings. They would be BBQed on just one pass.
