- 24-year-old Amy Wroe Bechtel was excited to start a new chapter in her life in Lander, Wyoming. She was newly graduated, newly married, and moving into a new house. But on July 24th, 1997, Amy went out for a run in the Wind River Mountains and never returned home. Police began to focus on Amy’s husband and his eyebrow-raising journals. But was Amy really the victim of the Great Basin Killer? It’s been 25 years and Lander is still wondering - What happened to Amy Wroe Bechtel?

Just to clarify since there’s confusion in the comments. Amy’s family confirmed that Steve was making a joke in the 911 call, not asking for a spare or extra officer. There is no other part of that statement from that call that was cut out.

I agree with Josh. I think that someone kidnapped her. I don’t think Steve wants to take the polygraph because of how 50/50 it is and how hard police are trying to pin it on him. God forbid it comes back that he failed it, they’re going to go even harder on him and he could be completely innocent. I feel for her family and I hope that whoever did this gets justice and I hope they get closer one day.

@@Torimae13I’m so glad I’m not the only one who is feeling this way. I find it to be sensationalizing the story and they are usually so respectful and mindful of these things. I still think they have good intentions nonetheless.
And if you’re hiking alone, make sure you tell someone where you are going and that you’ll check in with them by a certain time.
I love that your team focuses on the stories and theories rather than gruesome details for true crime (I understand her body wasnt found but in all your cases, im grateful that you dont go into detail on the remains). It's really appreciated! ❤
Josh gushing about how beautiful Wyoming is made my heart soar. Everyone is always talking about how Wyoming is barren, but I lived in Northern Wyoming and I left my heart there. It is so beautiful ❤
I went on a road trip, hit 23 states and Wyoming was one of my favorites. Spent a few days in Sinks Canyon, absolutely awesome.
I knew a girl here in my hometown of San Antonio that got murdered while she was on a run, and it really affected me. Since then I won’t go on a run alone ever. Everyone please be safe when running or hiking alone.
Also in the 90s there was no cell phones.
The 911 call isn’t a big deal to me in this case. My husband goes fishing for hours on end. I don’t call the police when it’s later than he said. Asking for a spare officer was probably because he was embarrassed to call in case nothing happened and he felt he was wasting time. Unless he did it, I’m not that far yet.
He wasn't asking for a spare officer. He said "we have a missing person. Do you have an extra?" He was joking about if they had an extra person since his was missing. I still don't think it's suspicious though. I make jokes when I'm nervous or anxious without thinking, and sometimes they're pretty inappropriate for the situation at hand.

It is always so heartbreaking when there is no body, no justice and no peace of mind for the family :( scary how someone can seemingly just disappear, really hope at the very least Amy's remains can be reunited with her loved ones
I have sympathy for the 911 call. When I get super stressed, I make horrible inappropriate jokes. My family knows but strangers can and has gotten really angry and offended by this. And the harder I try to contol it the more it happens. ....

Yeah to me I saw it more as stress and that he just wasn't really thinking straight because he was worried and that it was more of a coping mechanism kind of thing but I could see it as being suspicious too 🤷🏻♀️

This is tragic, but I think it's important as true crime consumers to not live our lives in paranoia, but instead find avenues of empowerment. You'll never regret doing the things you love. I'm a young female and I've solo traveled, solo hiked/ran, with earbuds, my entire life. I'm also competent in self-defense, trail safety and survival, etc. Watch your surroundings, trust your instincts, but don't limit yourself. You could have someone shoot through the wall of your house and die that way too.

I understand and support the overall message of not being paranoid. But being smart about how you do things is not paranoia. Running with headphones in just is not a smart thing to do. Being competent in self-defense would include the first and most important part of self defense, awareness.
I would agree. Many people do and must go alone when hiking/running/training. The safety aspect is picking a trail route ahead of time and sharing that with a select few people, not deviating from the trail, and then when you do not return in time, your friends and family have a game plan to search for you immediately.

Keep in mind though that the guy who was Steve's alibi being "closer with Amy" is literally just what we're being told. For all we know the two of them are actually very close and the argument on the trail never happened, they're just lying about there being a rift between them to make Steve's alibi more believable. Amy's not here to say if the friend was actually closer to her or not. I'm not saying this is what happened, it's just a idea. Maybe Steve's alibi really is made up? Sadly it's been so long, I don't think we'll ever know.
So true about Steve's alibi. I hope the family gets answers but this is probably another case we will never have answers to.
this is what i was thinking! they could easily have been in on it together and the alibi was just taken at face value and never questioned. there's no one to confirm anything they said but the two of them
The friend was proven to have been where he said he was that day- although they couldn’t prove Steve was with him.

Amy grew up about a block from where I grew up. A childhood friend lived in her childhood house when we were growing up. I firmly believe Dale Wayne Eaton is a serial killer and took Amy's life. It wouldn't shock me if she was buried somewhere on his former property. There are several people missing from Wyoming and the surrounding areas from times when he wasn't in prison...it wouldn't shock me a bit if he was the reason. His own brother said he was in the area Amy was when she went missing....

I'm a guy, always armed in some way, and I hike or go on walks often. I never put both earbuds in, I only put one in my left ear and keep my volume low enough to hear around me. Some say its paranoid, but you really never know. Be safe out there!
In times of anxiety people use humour to quell their fears. When in hospital with my daughter for a serious reason I found myself joking with the nurses and yes some it was a little inappropriate for the situation and none of it was pre thought or planned it just tumbled out. I grimace still (15yrs later) when I think back. It is a far more common behaviour than you think.

Very used to it, understandable, and normal in context. It's the faked crying, the members reacting for attention or suddenly caring after years of neglect and showing up angry, overly demanding after years of absences. The joking to keep minds off the unbearable stress or sadness is normal.
I genuinely think the “joke” was a lil bit of embarrassment or he could have been thinking that she’d been arrested or in hospital? That makes the most sense to me x
Great job on this case. I’m from Lander and lived there when she went missing. I have always prayed they would find her and solve this case. It truly rocked the community and people still talk about Amy. She was such a sweet person and always think about her when on the loop road. Thank you for being so thorough in covering her story.
Please, please, please look into Echo Lloyd's dissapearence. Her daughter is desperately looking for answers but needs help bringing attention to her case since currently law enforcement have suspended their search efforts for her mom.

Your description of Amy reminds me so much of my brother. From running cross country, and still being extremely loved by the team even if she wasn’t the absolute best; to her carefully chosen moments to speak, of which were most always profound. The world has lost a very special soul, and something more needs to be done. Amy deserves justice, along with her loved ones on her behalf; I hope they’re finding moments to practice self care, even with so many years of a life-changing unknown. It’s heartbreaking, and no one deserves this fate

I used to hike alone on Arizona trails. Unless you are on a super popular trail, there is no one around. It would be spooky, being alone and hearing animals rustling around.
I am surprised that I had never heard of Amy’s heartbreaking case. My fiancé and I used to live in Jackson, WY and we went rockhounding near the area Amy went missing a few times while we lived there. My thoughts and prayers are with Amy’s family and loved ones. I hope that Amy is found so that she can be properly laid to rest and that her family receives the answers that they have been searching for all of these years.

Im leaving an abusive marriage on Friday. Hopefully. Watching Kendall and Josh is helpful to actually see there are authentic relationships out there.

I knew Lauren growing up. Our neighborhoods were very close. We were on soccer teams and cheer together since we were in 1st grade. Her passing is absolutely devastating. She was the most kind hearted and sweetest girl. She went on long walks around our neighborhoods almost every day. It crushes me to think of the pure evil that did this to her. My heart goes out to her parents, family and closest friends.

I think often we look at things from the perspective of the world we currently live in. Not long ago it was not unheard of to not hear from someone for hours or all day even. Currently we are constantly connected with cellphones and social media but back then, not so much and not so often

Loved the video as always. Small addition for when it comes to personal safety while traveling / hiking alone: You mentioned it'd be good to have some sort of safety tool on you. As for animal attacks, I agree that may come in handy. However, in many cases, having a 'weapon' (may be any sort of tool that you're planning to use as a weapon) on you may lead to it being used against you. This is especially true for pepper spray but applies to other things as well. There are many records of women especially who were attacked with the very tools they carry to defend themselves. This is a risk you should be aware of when carrying any kind of utensil for self defence - it's not risk-free even if it makes you 'feel safer'.

@@Ida-Adrianafeel free to defend yourself however you feel is suitable, the point I raised can be measured statistically. It's a fact that many people, especially those that do not have proper training with weapons, get harmed with whatever they brought to defend themselves with. Instead of carrying a weapon or pepper spray, it's often less dangerous to defend yourself using eg combative sports skills learnt eg in a self defense course.

Oh wow! I am also Wyoming born and raised and Lisa Marie and Amy Wroe's stories were common around here. Granted, the Wroes lived a block away from where I grew up when Amy was a kid. Murders and disappearances were common talk. There was a kid murdered in the park bathroom of my hometown, Amy Wroe lived in my hometown when she was younger (before moving to Lander), Lisa Marie drove through the interstate by my hometown before she stopped at the rest area she was carjacked at, a missing kid was stopped by police on the same interstate the very last time he was seen alive (his remains were found a few years ago 2 towns away), there was a pair of serial killers that were caught here....to say the town is weird is an understatement!
This has happened to me where my husband went to his parents house left his phone at his parents house. He was in his dads car driving hours away but coming home later that day. I had no clue though and I called his mom she said she had no clue where he was, tried calling his dad and no answer, called his grandma she didn’t know……7 hours later at 9pm at night he comes home…..I was about ready to call the police after thinking of all the scenarios but thinking I was crazy didn’t call the police
Just started the video. I will never understand how any community could be "the type of community where no one locks their doors". As someone who grew up in a city, it's inconceivable to even think about that.
I grew up in a tiny country town of less than 700 people and we never locked our doors during the day growing up. We ran between friends' houses and walked right in. Watching crime videos, I realize how naive and lucky we were.

1:01:29 so, I work at a mental health hospital and I am listening to this at 10:30 at night before I go in for my shift. The hospital sits about a mile and a half outside town. So, now I am creeped out. 😆 Also, there is a storm.

I don't think the husband did it. The weird comment to the 911 could be just him being nervous. As a person that laugh in serious situations (can't control it) I also feel people judging me. Maybe he just felt stupid calling the police because the wife was so independent that he couldn't imagine she was actually in dangerous. I believe thats she either got kidnaped, human traffic or got hit by a car and someone got rid of her body. Is super sad. I really hope this case gets solved and justice.

I grew up in Wyoming. Back then it was a HUGE rainbow people hotspot. The "hippies" traveled all over the state for about a decade staying at various campgrounds. I think it's highly plausible especially in Lander.
I live in Illinois in a rural town with earbuds I leave one in n one out when I walk so I can hear ppl behind me cars etc. Got the tip from an EIU student, we were both out walking the same way one day n she gave me the one ear bud tip. She said she's from Chicago n her mom always told her to do that so she could still hear cars n ppl around her n not to have the music at a loud volume it works pretty well
I wonder if it’s possible someone saw her while she was running errands, followed her up there and took her at the right moment.

I've worked with a few young guys who were almost pathological about AlWAYS seeming cool. It's just their form of macho posturing, especially if they don't really believe that something dire has happened. As an older man the husband probably wouldn't have such an immature attitude.

I grew up in lander I was about 5 when this happened. I feel like this cause is what made me interested in true crime. Lander is such a small town where growing up people never locked their doors at night.
