  • On April 30th, 2010, Shannan Gilbert called 911 from Long Island, running from a client’s house screaming before she disappeared into thin air. Half a year later, police searching for Shannan found the bodies of four other sex workers along Ocean Parkway on Gilgo Beach. Six more victims would be discovered on Long Island’s south shore by the end of 2011. For over a decade - and potentially longer - the Long Island/Gilgo Beach serial killings were unsolved. But on July 13th, 2023, police announced they’d arrested Long Island architect Rex Heuermann for three of the murders - bringing hope that finally, LISK’s victims will receive justice.

My mom was murdered in 1987. She was killed by a woman. The woman who killed her had also killed another woman 6 months before my mom, she left that woman's body in the woods along with her 13 month old daughter who was physically unharmed. That woman was given a plea deal to two counts to second degree murder with 328 months on each count to run concurrently and she was released 9 years later. My mom and the other woman were both prostitutes and heroin addicts and I think that's why their killer got off so easy. If no one else loved my mom I did. I was only 10 years old. My mom was 29.

I’m not against sex work nor is this shaming. I worked security for a gentleman’s club for a few years. I saw and experienced quite a bit. I made life long friends with some dancers who also did other work. I heard horror stories. Women please be careful. Security is sooo important. And I know it’s not possible for all. Different circumstances, etc.. but if you’re going to do it. Take EVERY precaution possible. Carry a firearm a taser, at least pepper spray. Let a friend know your location at all times. Be safe with strangers. Not only in sex work situations. Nowadays we have a lot of technology that can save your life. The type of people that patronize certain establishments or certain types of work aren’t usually upstanding citizens. I understand people can’t always pick their customers. Be safe out there!

The former chief of police James Burke was arrested yesterday. He also derailed the FBI investigation into the Bilbo murders. Also went to prison for beating a cuffed man, tried to cover it up. Still collecting a 145k pension. Busted trying to pick up a male escort

As someone from the area, it’s refreshing to hear someone covering this so in depth after all these years. The most you heard publicly was that there was a "rumor" there was a serial killer on Long Island. Gotta love the NYPD. Wish I could say I was surprised this was how they handled it, but I’m not. Two young men also went missing from the Brooklyn Mirage this last month and wound up dead at the same spot in the same river days after being missing. That’s been brushed passed too. Thanks for focusing on these women for the human beings they were ❤

I live a few blocks from Rex and walked my dog by that house all the time. For years these murders have haunted all of us and hearing about the neglect from the Suffolk county PD is disgusting but also not shocking (BTW they are one of the highest paid police officers in the country). It’s so sad that the police pick and choose what cases to give the most attention. Their job is to serve and protect, so look past their job title and find out who killed them in hopes to protect other women from being killed. May those beautiful women rest in piece and receive the justice they deserve! 🕊️ It’s relieving to know that the man behind these murders is finally in custody, I just hope our justice system doesn’t fail these women again.
