I do think Drug addiction should be cared for better and first and not be thrown in with the cattle where people are happy to be "rotring in prision" .

I think the rehabilitation idea works for criminals in prison for drug charges or theft charges or other non violent crimes. Burt in my opinion if you take a life (not self defense) maliciously that person doesn’t get a chance to live their life and neither should you.

As a Canadian whose cousin was brutally murdered in Canada I struggle with our laws sometimes. My cousins murderer walked free after serving 6 months in a healing lodge. I advocate for the use of healing lodges but 6 months was a slap in the face to us all. My cousin was 16 when he was killed at a house party and the guy was released due to good behaviour so he could spend Christmas with his family. I can remember thinking what about our family? He got out and then wrote a rap about the murder….. Karma came for him years later after he was stabbed by someone else which I think was the first time some of my family felt that closure for a while. That being said - to Josh’s point that families should decide, I completely disagree. Families are emotionally vulnerable, don’t need to live with that decision weighing on them and your sentencing weighing on how much the family empathizes with you is an unfair risky game. That being said, I do think that if families wish to partake in the parole hearing, I think some of these “found god” people should have to answer questioning from said family and judges should value their input.

Its crazy in Canada. I worked with a guy who's brother had a fight with his girlfriend. He later walked up to her house, and when she answered, he shot her in the face with a shotgun. He was charged with First degree murder. But hired Eddie Greenspan. He ended up getting a plea deal for Manslaughter, sentenced to 10 years. He was released 7months later, as pre-trial custody is double time. So he was actually locked up for 31months. He ended up becoming an executive at Ford a few years later, lives in a huge mansion in East York

My cousin was murdered execution style while washing the dishes. Her killer was under the influence, served his 17 years and now walks free. It is beyond terrifying, 100% unjustified, and just purely awful. To know he took a life and didn't give the rest of his still baffles me. Also, he got more time for the drug charges related to the murder than the actual murder itself😡
Kendall and Josh, we ❤ you for covering these cases.

I think what is missing from your conversation about rehabilitation is the world in which they are being released into. In the US, it is difficult to get a job with a convicted felony and those released would be more likely to commit another crime due to their lack of income, stability, and safety.

My uncle was hit and killed by a drunk driver, its definitely not the same as premeditated murder but, my grandmother told the man at sentencing that she forgave him. After he served over 10 years she wrote letters to the parole board to help him get out. She even loaned him $50 after he got out. He got his life back together and ended up sending her $500 for helping him out in so many ways. Her forgiveness is something I still struggle to understand.

Yeah my aunt, her boyfriend & a family friends infant was killed bc the man who was driving dosed off. It left other family members injured & ejected out of the car. One was in a coma for a long time & when he woke up had to be told his father died.
I was in 5th grade. That was my favorite aunt I love her so much. To this day I still can’t understand why no charges were brought against him. He’s living life freely and his only injury was to the neck which was solved with a neck brace. He was an older man too probably in his 50s. So irresponsible. I’m struggling to understand why he wasn’t held accountable for killing 3 people. Ugh

I think releasing people early would be case by case basis, dependent not just on how they acted in prison, but their age, the circumstances leading to it, and for me, their behavior before they committed their crimes. A one time 25 year old offender who beat her abusive husband to death after years of abuse is different than the person who violently robbed multiple people over years.

It seems like Tommy was weirdly intrigued in the idea of committing a murder, like he REALLY pushed for beating her with the fruit bowl. But when he kept asking his cousin why he doesn't feel guilty, I think that actually scared him. It sounds like he realized there was something wrong with him to not feel anything after doing something so terrible, and that's probably why he found God in prison. Regardless, he deserves the sentence, good for him for changing his ways, but you can't undo what's been done
And I think Heather made that whole confessions video to try to get more time in prison, she's obviously thriving, she probably doesn't want to leave. But I definitely think she's way more dangerous than Tommy

Heather's confession video reminded me of Elliot Roger. Both of them are/were vile examples of a living, breathing meat sack. This is just auch a sad story all around. I only hope Stella ends up protected and does receive her inheritance.

There was a murder of a teenager girl where I live. The two people that actually murdered the girl were a couple and it's widely known that Sarah was the one who wanted her dead, but her boyfriend went along with it willingly. They both got life in prison. No one can make you kill someone.

When it comes to the rehabilitation discussion, I believe a necessary part of being rehabilitated when someone commits a heinous murder is accepting that they do not have the right to a life anymore. Accepting the consequences of their actions, even if it means their entire life behind bars, even if it means the death penalty.
All of these psychopathic murderers who claim they’ve changed and are rehabilitated are always seeking to be released back into society. That’s not change. That’s selfishness.

On the subject of sentencing. The UK has a usual life sentence starting point of the minimum term of 15 years that can then go higher with aggravating circumstances . It's very rare that anyone gets a full life tariff. I think we currently have under 40 people serving that sentence at this present time. I wish we had harsher sentences for the worst crimes committed. Great episode as always. Oh and keep saying the episode number please

This one was difficult for me to listen to today because of personal life events. I pressed charges against my sister awhile back for assault. I asked my lawyer and court for an emphasis for rehabilitation for various reasons versus a sentence because of her post-partum at the time. Her behavior hasn't changed in over a decade despite passing drug tests and behavioral assessments. I believe she is a danger to herself and society and it makes me sad to think that at any time my niece can be in danger because of my sisters behavior. I hope Stella gets decent care and grows up with good people in her life to get through all of this, knowing her biomom is a murderer.
