  • Short video highlighting the joys of a 1954 A.C. Gilbert American Flyer - Engine Number 293 - Retrospective. We used a ~70 year old working set, to create the video. Take a step back in time to relive the joys of model trains in the 1950's. There is a short intro, then watch what it felt like to ride an S Gauge Gilbert steam locomotive. Be a kid again! Keep your eye out, there's lots of motion going on! Can you count how many vehicles move?

    I still have my 1955 American flyer train set. Everything still works including the steam whistle. Although I had the brushes replaced twenty years ago.

    Hello! I'm 73 years old and I do remember that I had a big Lionel layout made by my father in the 50's. Good memories of that. Bravo for your video and well done.

      Ok you got me by a couple of years but. I remember a Lionel too. In retrospect I think the Gilbert was better. But Lone Ranger was better than Daniel Boone too. Lol.

    I have a few 293s including one with a two-step reverse unit in the cab. I lived in Connecticut for seven years, so New Haven rolling stock is near and dear to me! Pull-mor was nothing more than rubber tires bonded to the loco's drive wheels. It had nothing to do with the motor itself. The G. Fox box car came out in 1949 as part of a special promotional set for G. Fox.

    I received my 1`st FLyer Train in 1957 I was 8 and it was a 283 Pacific. I loved my train and was so distraught when the transformer fried. I decided to hook up house power to the track, then up plug it in the turns. Not my best idea. 55 Years Later, I retired and found a box of two old engines I had stashed away. I restored them to operation and bought a single sheet of 4 x 8 plywood and ordered boxes of old track. I started buying old junker Flyer Engines and fixing them and giving them away the kids of people I knew. Then we had a young lady that we wanted to give a train to and hoped to srur some interest in the train, it was a pretty rough set and I needed to repaint it. I brought my wife in to help make it Girly! I was thinking Pink and she immediately took over and looked thru all my paints and said lets go to Michaels Craft Store. This is not going to work. The Girly Train was my first Tribute Train using AC Gilberts Atlantic and the Young Lady loved seeing her name on the side of the passenger car In Pink/Purple letters on the Silver Metal Flake Paint! Then I got 4 2x2 pieces of 4 inch pink rigid insultation glued them together and mounted a circle of track. We built girly cars using metal pink and purple paint glueing jewels and fluffy things. It was a massive heresy to the Brand and AC Gilbert but, the little guy was so thrilled and so loved the sounds that came out of the station. It was my calling all board to the Taylor Special using a digital sound card and Gilbert button box. She played that over and over and laughed and asked her grandpa to make the train smoke and go. Thus began a string of Tribute Trains form Junker FLyer Trains that were really ruff. When I found a clean pristine example I would give that to one of my train buddies that collected original Flyer. I built my wife an OZ train, finding a bright green Northern, I built mySelf a Lincoln Funeral Train, a Corvette Racing Train, My Dads Train was a tribute to the Midnight Special he took from Chicago to our farm in the Corn Belt after a Cubs Night game. A K5 Pacific that i modified to have a true 4 Puff and Chuffs per Revolution using mechanical parts. A local train show had everyone shocked to see a Gilbert FLyer run so Slow and puffing big smoke with a digital Chuff Sound while looking totally original on the outside. I bought a tiny 3D Printer and began to design a Fan driven smoke to continue the Updating of systems inside the Gilbert Flyer. I then installed and learned Fusion 360 and serious Computer Aided Design (CAD) software product. That unleashed a series of new parts my little printer could not handle. I found larger printer listed at $650 on sale for $350 because is was open box returned unit. I got it for $250 started to learn how to make it work better. In the last 7 years I have created a new permanent magnet field housing to convert the old flyer motor into a true DC Motor. Gilbert had a DC Motor the magnet tech was weak Today I use 4 Super Magnets and its super powerful. I finished a completely new smoke housing and a set of all we=heel pick up tender trucks. All CAD based designs and 3 D Printed with upgraded parts and always the Gilbert Flyer Bodies and linkages. Atlantic, Pacifics, Hudsons Northerns, and even a Alco Diesel Version all with smoke and digital Sounds. Along the way we reverse engineered an older Lionel Digital Reverse PCB for modern use, keeping the 4 step reverse function with AC Track power,. This year I completed the 1st complete Tender with Body all 3D Printed. It is now in Ohio getting prepped for a K5 Operation to be shown at a Train Show. I have also learned that the older Prewar Flyer steam engines used all the same motor and chassis design. So I have started to update those Prewar Flyer engines with DC Fields and Fan Smoke. I just completed a DIT Mini Mill using my Dremel and a manual X Y table for a true CNC Milling machine. I used this machine to cut a slot into the Older Steam Engine Chassis to install a Smoke Drive gear like the later Gilbert S units. I have a 3D Printed gear, cam and adaptor to provide the timing triggers for 2 and 4 Puffs and Chuffs per revolution of the drive gear on all SIB S models and the PreWar O gauge models. I know this is small book I am so sorry but I need help these days. Help testing and completing development of new systems. I am not a commercial business, I sell these things at my cost plus a tiny bit for more new stuff. But I am not a shop selling parts, I am Frankentrain Laboratories where I focus on new developments and try to find partners or resellers to help spread the word and help other hobbyists that want promote Flyer Trains to a larger group. Please help me see my You Tube, spread the word and ask me questions. I am not a restorer, I have made replacement parts like a Northern Chassis to original design for a friend. And I have several Prewar Engines to fix and Update. I have a new controller still in development that drives the converted FLyer DC Motor to Pulse Width Modulation control thru a WIFI Wireless Handheld controller. We have it working using a constant 15 Volts to the track, AC or DC. I also have had requests for Engine Bodies Gilbert Never made. Mostly Streamlined Steamer. Articulating Dual Drive Steamers, 4X4X4X4 or 4X5X5X4, 4X6X6X4 and 4x10x4 and even a Snow Piecer engine that was a 10X10 perpetual powered engine. I did build a Frozen Tribute Train for a little girl that was an ICE Powered Atlantic and a Tribute Train to the Intelligence Agencers that was Nuclear Powered and Wooden Passenger Cars with a Decal Wrap to show every Intel logo on the sides of the cars. I used a heavily modified K4 Stream Lined Steam engine from American Models for that. You can see all these trains on You Tube by searching buy the trains theme Girly Train, Spy Train etc. OK I am done. God Bless AC Gilbert and all American Flyer Hobbyist, love that train and want to go on and on. Dennis in Virginia www.youtube.com/@DennisMurphey/search?query=girly%20train

    I had in my collection several 290's which were the earlier version of the 293; link couplers and sheet metal tender. The other thing I liked about the earlier versions of the steamers was that they had the wire harness on a plug that connected to the tender rather than the direct wiring of the 293 and the other later steamers. Much easier to service that way. I had the 293 as well and the tender was nice along with the white stripe on the engine but anytime it's a choice between metal over plastic, give me the metal. Another difference was the traction tire on the later steamers like the 293 which caused them to "wobble" as they went down the track which is clearly visible in your video.

    My 1954 #293 pulled our Christmas train Dec this past year. The train had all its original cars, 2 extra tank cars, including the illuminated caboose, PLUS 5 annual Christmas boxcars, with their dedicated caboose . The mighty #293 seemed very happy for the additional load. I’ll post a TH-cam Short later this week.

    I feel American Flyer has never gotten its due. They mastered 2-rail in the 1950s while overrated and overpriced Lionel used unrealistic 3-rail. Also, AF was closer to scale.

  • @Morganstein-Railroad

    It's all very well saying "Let's go back to 1954", but people didn't live in black and white then! You can keep it in colour, and just run the trains as they would have been run then.

    • @Tec-360-Videoland
      @Tec-360-Videoland  ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL. The title says "Be a kid Again!" The purpose of the black and white, was to emulate what kids TV shows looked like then. Almost all kids shows were in B/W. Lone Ranger, Boys Railroad Club, Daniel Boone. It's called artistic license. I'd hate to live in a world where imagination wasn't allowed. I watched a video called "Cabride around the layout:".. It was kind of boring. Maybe that's why it only got 27 views. This video is closing in on 17,000 views. Wonder what contributed to the difference. Take a chill, be a kid again..... Just enjoy the trains.

      I agree with Tec-3 the B&W added to that '50s TV experience. It felt like i was watching an episode of the American Flyer Model Railroad Club program. I enjoyed it immensely. For color watch any number of youtube channels featuring American Flyer trains.

    Those are not 1954 AF trains. They have knuckle couplers. Back then they had ugly alligator couplers.

    • @watertrek360
      @watertrek360 ปีที่แล้ว

      Appreciate the feedback. My understanding is that there are 4 four common generations of AF couplers.
      The Link Coupler, made from 1946 through 1953.
      The Knuckle Coupler, introduced in 1952 and sold into the early 1960s.
      The Pike Master, introduced in 1960 to reduce manufacturing costs.
      The Lionel redesigned Knuckle Coupler after they took over. In late 60’s
      In 1954, my understanding it that half the units went out as Link coupler and half as knuckle coupler.
      So I am relying on my friend, as he is the owner, but his information fits. thanks

    • @8avexp
      @8avexp 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Link couplers were on the way out in '54. Gilbert did indeed offer trains with knuckle couplers that year.
