  • The Feb 2024 meeting of the North Florida Division of the Atlantic Coast S Gaugers featured Missouri Pacific trains. First off in this video, you see a 1958 American Flyer Eagle set originally owned by Larry's father Emory, now in the Lloyd Lippert collection. Lloyd also brought his original American Flyer Merchandiser set to operate. Larry ran his Flyonel MP set, an ABA and 8 different MoPac passenger cars. A gorgeous set with all different "Eagle" names on the cars. Larry also ran his American Models Alco FA units with an homage to the merchandiser set with some extra cattle cars to serve the MP customers. The meeting had 12 members in attendance and everyone enjoyed viewing and operating these vintage trains.

I have a Gilbert era Missouri passenger consist pulled by a new LEGACY equipped PA A-B-A locomotive lashed-up. The PB is RailSounds equipped, but runs muted. The LEGACY system provides all sound effects. I have a nearly identical system in but with early Lionel made Union Pacific cars from the Pony Express set, plus additional car purchased separately. They are so gratifying when they run! I wish I had a 20’x30’ layout to run them on… Someday, perhaps I’ll add a Great Northern consist to my collection as long as I can hide it from the wife!. Lastly, I still have the original engines for both the Missouri and UP trains, along with Santa Fe and Rocket passenger trains. Everything is in running condition…. Thanks for sharing your wonderful video!

Great layout and great train sets. I remember those two sets when brand new. One was displayed above the other in a train shop called "Les Gordon"s Trains" in Indianapolis. Flyer are great trains...I just don't think they get enough credit in today's markets. I love all trains and guages and layouts. Thanks for sharing this wonderful video.

I have the Merchadiser set that I received for Christmas when I was about 13. I also have an original 1954 #300 store layout that has many of those Minicraft and American Flyer accessories. I was intrigued by the alternating highway flasher as I designed and built a similar device a few years ago using an Arduino. Mine also dings the bell and operates a crossing gate.
Great layout and fun to watch!

Gilbert Flyer was primarily AC, though they sold a few DC locomotives in late 40's and early 50's. Lionel Flyer is strictly AC. In simple terms you can convert any locomotive over to DC or even DCC. Americsn Models can be purchased AC or DC, eith scale or hi-rail wheelsets, as was the case with S Helper Service. MTH locomotives can be operated in AC, DC, or DCC without any conversion. The newer op

The newer MTH and Lionel Flyer have newer operating systems with sound and other engine functions that will basically work with conventional transformers, but you need the manufactures operating systems for all of the functions to work, vs a limited number of functions under traditional modes..
