Made in the USA by Americans for Americans and it never got better than that and it will never again be as good. But what a blessing to have lived it. There was so much fun hobby stuff and by far the best toys in the world, all made in the USA by people like our parents and neighbors (WWII vets and the Great Depression era Americans). An amazingly positive time to be a kid especially with toys like these. I had a lot of stuff from Gilbert, btw.

That’s my uncle Gabe Monaco walking through the “No Admittance” door! He developed a number of toys for Gilbert and gave me one as a present called “Gabe the Lamp Lighter”. Great to see him as a young man! He went on to build miniature motors for NASA.

So was Gabe the Lamplighter named for him? I have always been a Lionel guy, but I do like Flyer too, my grandfather was a Lionel guy all the way, but even he liked the Flyer water tank better than the Lionel one. I'm currently restoring a Sam the Semaphore Man. Now I wonder who they named it after,

I've been a Flyer guy ever since I received my first train set on my fifth birthday in 1961. I still have that set, in its original box with the $11.95 price sticker, and it still runs. My collection has grown quite a bit since then and while most of my Flyer stuff is from the Gilbert days, I have some Lionel Flyer as well.

Now,you know that Gilbert was bought out by Lionel in 1957 right?.
This lowered the quality of the Gilbert train collection dramatically.

@@4gauge10 No, Lionel bought Gilbert in 1967. No production until 1979 with 3 cars made. Lionel reproduced alot of the original accessories and lots of beautiful rolling stock. The cars from 1979 to 1989 had the original Gilbert trucks until 1984 then slight differences until 1990 but still all right but a few trucks were assembled wrong. 1990 a newly designed truck was made but still original Gilbert quality. The cars were even better looking throughout the 21st century to this day. I have the 2002 NYC PA-1 A B A set with all 7 passenger cars. Engines run better and quieter than the 1950s ones. The Heavyweight sets with new steam engines that have smoke and choo choo plus railsounds with realistic whistles,.roar,
Everything you will not believe until you see these new American flyer traditional Gilbert trains made by Lionel.

@@michaelgmoore5708 I have all four passenger sets that were reissues of the original Gilbert favorites - Pony Express, Missouri Pacific, Northern Pacific and Silver Flash - plus add-ons. And I have each of the original Gilbert sets, too! I used to live in Connecticut, so New Haven passenger rolling stock is well-represented. I have all three NH boxed passenger sets, the '57 and '58 boxed freight sets and an assembled '56 Hot Shot freight set.

Surprisingly, some of those innovations that were new back in the 1950s are STILL used in making Model Trains today, except that DCC and such was decades into the future!

I could watch this all day. Thank you for this video. America was incredible back then. I inherited an A.F. 314AW with a whistling tender, 3 cars, lighted caboose, original transformer and enough track to go around the Christmas tree. My Dad bought it new. I agree, we do need an all-American A.C. Gilbert day!

Lionel postwar is best for kids. American flyer trains are too fragile. They are always broken, cracked, missing parts and all beat up when kids under 14 had them. No good as collectors items.

    • @8avexp
      @8avexp 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Does the whistle work on that 314AW? I have two of those and both whistles work.

Art Baker did the show from 1950 to 1958 and was replaced by Jack Smith. It was fun to watch as a kid. Their sponsor was Skippy Peanut Butter. That reminds me - I haven’t had Skippy Peanut Butter in years! Now I have to go out and get some. I hope that they still make it. My brother and I really enjoyed our American Flyer trains.

What dream job! Sadly, not long after this film was made, changes in tastes and economics made this scene a distant memory. The A C. Gilbert Company went out of business in 1966.
There has been a revival in S-Gauge trains beginning with Lionel in 1979. Although a minority scale, it has,a dedicated following with S-gauge clubs and a national organization called the National Association of S-Gaugers (NASG).

Dream job. And the 6 downvotes must have been from narrow-minded Lionel fans. I collect Flyer, Lionel and Marx.

I HAD MY ENTIRE AF TRAIN LAYOUT STOLEN FROM ME WHEN WE MOVED FEOM LEVITTOWN NY TO QUEENS IN 1956. IT WAS A COMPLETE LAYOUT WITH MANY TRAINS AND ACCESSORIES. I ENDED UP WITH A MARX SET.

I had the milk and lumber cars. Notice how they employed people on the assembly line and how well dressed they were? Lionel had the best press coverage, but I did not like the three rails when real trains ran on two rails, and the Lionel cars were so big, you needed much more space to make a setup. Sold all my Flyer stuff on ebay 10 years ago. People jumped at the chance to purchase my original trains. Thanks for this video. I also recall vividly watching "You Asked For It" on our 12 inch Philco black and white TV. The modern form of this program is the cable show "How It's Made."

This is like the Wonka Chocolate Factory for toy train collectors. Those toy inventors were extremely clever. I actually had 3 American Flyer Trains when I was a kid, but none of the cool stuff they showed in the video.
