Nice. This exact case is why I bought some Shadow Foam, transferring my Halfords advanced spanners from my old busted case and adding some new sockets. I didn't think about adding screwdrivers to the top, might have to revisit that.
How did that Shadow Foam project get on?
Great vid, and great kit!!!
I’ve shadowfoamed 8 drawers so far in my tool boxes, and apart from looking amazing, it massively decreases the time wasted rummaging for a specific tool! The new easy-peel foam is much easier to use, holds tools tighter, and looks smarter than the original foam, so I’ll be swapping the last 3 of my old inserts with easy-peel soon enough... 👍🏼
Fantastic! Would love to see a picture of that!
I bought my 1st socket set from Halfords nearly 40 years ago, still have it and still use it. 👍
Fantastic! What box do you use?
Nice job. I can think of many projects. As for Halfords tools, I've had to use the warranty twice and it just works. Quality tools at sensible prices.
Couldn’t agree more mate!
I had a set of Halfords ratchet spanners years ago. I used them when I was a maintenance engineer in a factory. We had some pumps carrying nasty acids and I used to use mine to strip them down.
Eventually they gave up, I never claimed on them, I figured they weren't designed for the aggressive acids I was using them on, but they did me proud for years 😊
Great story mate, thanks for sharing! How many years do you think you got out of them?
@ShadowFoam I got about 6 years from them. I initially had them after trying to remove a pneumatic pump which was right next to a wall. It took me over an hour with an adjustable spanner to undo one nut, so I bought them ASAP. They did very well. The acids used were very, very aggressive, I wasn't using them under normal wear and tear, that's why I didn't claim on them.
If you are going to use them under 'normal' conditions, they will be great.
@@cerealkiller4248
Did you attempt to claim a new set of spanners from the company that you were working for at the time, as you damaged your tools through no fault of your own by working with corrosive fluids?
Thank you.
Best regards,
Stefano
(Retired mechanical maintenance fitter)
Great Video Jonathan, had my eye on one of those modular storage cases for a while and what a great addition you’ve made too it with the shadow foam. Extra space for more tools with no compromise. I’ve got a few of the modular trays and other Halfords damaged tools you seriously can’t got wrong with the majority for the quality and price.
Thanks Elliot! What box do you currently put your tools in?
I’ve got a Halfords Advanced Tool Trolley and a Halfords 3 draw mobile chest as I ran out of room in the Trolley. Need too shadow foam the 3 draw chest stop things moving around. Thinking of getting the case for extra storage and an easier solution too grab if I’m going anywhere.
@@elliothetherington8112 we'll hope to be covering those Hlafords cases in the future!
@@ShadowFoam Yeah reckon you could do some cool things with them both 👍🏻 bargain the little 3 draw chest too.
I can’t help but feel incorporating that socket set into the shadow foam would make for a nicer and cleaner look
I feel the same now I look at the thumbnail! But we wanted to show that you can use Shadow Foam in conjunction with other organisers! 😃 Also, the Halfords insert had the sizes printed on which was nice to keep
@@ShadowFoamhave you guys looked at doing stamps for size imprints? Something that goes over a soldering iron and brand like a cows arse would work nicely 😅
Great video, seriously considering picking up some halford boxes and shadowfoam inserts for my tools.
One video I would love to see (if you haven't already and I just missed it) is how you'd cut for wired tools. I've a mixed of battery and wired and am unsure how I'd go about cutting for the cabled tools. Cheers!
We haven’t done that yet but it’s a great idea and we’ll add it to our list! 👍
@@ShadowFoam Awesome, looking forward to it!
Halfords tools are excellent. I still use the socket set I bought 40 years ago and it's like new. Looks like Shadow Foam can take things to the next level!
40 years wow! That is impressive!
Nice. A friend of mine used Halfords tools while working as a fitter in a fish processing factory and he never had any issues with the tools, the company or the warranty. He'd worked as a motorbike race mechanic and in the army, (REME I think) so he knew his way around these things. Cheers for the tips in here.
That’s great but tell your friend to avoid Halfords if he needs his car repaired or serviced. 😊
You’re welcome mate! 👍
Just purchased 👌🏻. Will be using for some Video equipment. Hdmi splitters, wireless Hdmi and much more. 👍🏻
Looking forward to seeing how that comes out, we did a video case a year ago, what do you think? - th-cam.com/video/MOOqOnujv8o/w-d-xo.html
jealous of the Halfords stores. Love some of the stuff you can get there.
Do you have Halfords tools?
@@ShadowFoam here in the states i have Home Depot, Lowes, Harbor Freight. I really wish these companies would do more with the foam inserts for their Kobalt, Milwaukee tool sets that would integrate with the stacking crates
This stuff looks good I may order some for my roll cab.
Seems like it might be a good idea to have your own scalpel made with a flat at the top of the handle, then a sliding blade/grub screw to lock it to the correct depth.
Just a thought, keep up the good work😊
Definitely an idea I will be working on!
The only thing I tried replacing on my 26 year old Halfords advanced socket set was a 10mm socket about a year ago.
The chrome had started to take off. The store near me wouldn't replace it as I didn't have the receipt.
Even though it's a known fault of Halfords receipts fading away so you can't read them.
Contacted customer services, who said they would replace it. Never did.
Eventually went to another store who replaced it no problem.
Wow what a great video and idea, if I was starting out again I think I would have gone for something like this. My tool kit has been made up over the pass 50 years, odd sockets making up my sets when lost.
Thanks Peter, any brands in particular?
Hi Peter....
That's the same as me and about the same time.....
Best regards,
Stefano
Definitely gonna do this, considering my original 200-piece Halfords plastic toolbox (I bought from the exact same store) isn't looking so healthy. I'd thought about going with their modular system but always wanted the option to fill them with the tools I already have rather than purchasing new ones. Game changer!
Fantastic to hear! And Northwich local too? Excellent! 👌
@@ShadowFoam Middlewich (it's Jim Griffiths on my other account). Wanted to check out the video again as I'd very much love to get one of those modular kits and consolidate my tools with Shadow Foam. Just planning it out in my mind. :)
Brilliant!
Thanks Carl!
Love the Halfords Advanced Tools. Highly recommend getting the 200pc. Got mine for £200~ several years ago. Will get you through a lot of car jobs and can then add tools to your collection, something I'm in the middle of doing using their modular tray case. Guess I'll have to get the shadowfoam insert now since love using it for my drawers
Are they still available now?
200pc still available but price has went up over the years. on sale atm for £263 down from £330. I'm sure in store they'll let you add your trade discount on top of that though@@ShadowFoam
Would be very interested to see a tool can as fit the Halfords tool cab and lots of their tools including modular trays! Brilliant video and products
Thanks mate, appreciate that!
I used Halfords professional tool range when I was panel-beating and fitting, the tools always worked as intended. I had a 1/4" ratchet-driver fail once and it was exchanged without question under the lifetime warranty. I bought and paid for pretty much all the tools I needed within a few months, which my colleagues who went down the Snap-on route could not say, they spent years paying for expensive tools that did exactly the same job; the only Snap-on kit I had were a 10mm clip-remover and a palm-ratchet socket screwdriver, both of which were excellent, but I wouldn't have spent the money on them, I happened to have had them given to me.
Not heard that comparison made before but I’ll be doing a snap on video soon so excited to see how they measure up!
I have them same Alan keys and had them in my advanced box for 5 years no problems at all
Both Teng and Gedore have similar systems. I have had a Teng roller case for about 8 years now and a couple of the smaller hand cases. The tool sets come in their own cases that interlock with each other into the larger cases. Their inserts are plastic and do break quite easily and I have replaced a couple of them with the old Shadow Foam . Would probably be better to do what you have done and remove the tools from their individual cases and use one big piece of Shadow Foam.
I have a Halfords roller cabinet in my garage with their ratchet spanners and screwdrivers for over 25 years now, no issues with any of them.
How do you find the Teng tools?
@@ShadowFoam They are a good tool, they do make some unique pieces that are useful for my work. I do fee they can be a bot over-priced though in comparison to what is out there. Most of the tools are a matt finish rather than the shiny chrome, so they don't have the same look, but they are durable.
I've been using Halfords tools for years and am yet to brake one. I have a Halfords tool chest and for value for money i think they are spot on. Love the spanners and sockets. Only thing i find is the lock on the tool chest draws can be a bit fiddly. PS, I got my screwdrivers free as well, I'm pritty sure they came with oil.
How long have you had those screwdrivers?
@@ShadowFoam A long time, Couldn't give you a date but i've got two sets, One in my tool chest in my work shop and i've got another set in my lorry for when i'm out on the road. The lorry set is new as unfortunatly i left my screwdrivers in a truck services after carrying out a repair on the lorry. Bugger. I haven't broken any yet, just had to replace a set i lost. I've also got the impact screwdrivers where the shaft comes out the other end of the handle so you can wollop it with a hammer.
I’ve never said a halfords set looks good before but that looks incredible, I have the thandle torx set because I wanted them and didn’t want to price of the snap on ones and they are great although I’ve worn off the writing
Thanks for the compliment mate! Appreciate it!
Love the dial up tone when he’s thinking. 😂. I’m gonna hear that sound when I go upstairs and forget what I’ve gone up there for!
Cheers mate, had a right chuckle editing that! 😅
Awesome idea, I was thinking of buying a few of the kits, but wanted to make a suggestion first. Can you do a kit of 3 (or 6) the same size of the original Halfords foam? That way I can organise my tools with 3 to a shelf in my tool chest and mix and match the tools I need in the case when I’m going to a job.
You can get that on our custom sizes page on www.shadowfoam.com
We will also be adding custom inserts for that Halfords box to our range in the future! 👍
I’ve done something similar to your suggestion but found I was too lazy to keep swapping about so ended up using shadow foam just like this.
The Teng Tools (lifetime warranty too) TCMM1001N toolkit (plenty of vids on youtube) includes some empty trays for personalisation / additional tools of your own choice. I reckon the 30mm foam would work perfect in those trays - and possibly improve on some of the other trays too.
We will keep that in mind for a future video!
Thank you for commenting to when I told you about my socket set the tools are pretty decent
Yes the screw driver are amazing they last forever
My pleasure mate, how long have you had your Halfords screwdriver set?
Not 100% sure, probably 20 years
That's Halfords in Northwich.
It is indeed! Are you local?
@@ShadowFoam Aye! Just down the road in Middlewich. It caught me off guard when I saw the first scene!
@@JimGriffOne haha we have to shop local 👍
Love it, got halfords kit after snap on was stolen and honestly no real complaints although the newer stuff isn't quite as good in my opinion. Got some from halfords professional, to old advanced to the newer kit. Would love to see you do the halfords boxes
I do plan on covering them in the future! Anything I should seek out specifically?
I’ve just got a Halfords roll cab and will be shadows foaming every draw would be awesome to see how you do it!
Working on getting a Halfords Roll Cab of our own!
@@ShadowFoam will look forward to it
Definitely do the roll cab please!
We’ll pick one up next time I pop into Halfords!
This is the kind of advertising I can get behind. High quality stuff.
Cheers mate 👍
Never seen shadow foam before, that's a sexy toolkit you made! I've got so many blown plastic cases for drills, multi tool, crimper, impact driver, screwdriver and bits, sockets etc etc etc and it drives me nuts. (1 screwdriver is the only tool I have from Halfords, I've found their quality to be on par with Chinese cheap stuff so I don't buy from them anymore.)
I could do with maybe 2 of what you've made so I am better organised. Thanks for the inspiration.
My pleasure mate, let me know if I’ve inspired you to get organised!
Cool! Think I'll pick up this kit, struggling to find it on the website though as there's no Halfords brand on the 'case inserts' page

Hahaha we are currently developing some new colours, so watch this space! 👀
For anyone wondering I use Halford advanced on heavy commercial vehicles and stands up well had no issues replacing a couple of spanners and torx sockets
How long have you used Halfords advanced for?
3 years
I wonder if you have ever considered CNC Options. Ie for you add a foam to your basket, and you can design your own cut outs and you CNC before shipping. You could even have a catalog of stencils, ie all that halfords gear. Also, if you get a smart developer, he could optimise orders onto large foam formats to reduce wastage (even if no engraving, just cutting sheets). People could use Polycam to get homemade stencils, or design them in tinkercad.
One day when i finish my house refurb, ill be deploying this in my garage 😍 LTT Orange.
Not heard about this - polycam did you say?
@@ShadowFoam Yh, anyone with a iPhone can use the LIDR sensor to produce accurate 3d models. Drop them onto a canvas (workflow required) and job done 👍 (Sounds way more simple than it probably all is though)

Do you have the Halfords modular tookbox?

If you don't already, you might consider giving the tools away at the end. Possibly make it into a big charity auction or raffle at the end of the year.
Also, I'm pretty sure Colin wouldn't mind if you asked him for a voice over recording of his voice saying, "subscribe". To your mind it might not feel as authentic as talking it from your original video but I'd argue it'd likely be more authentic as you'd asked him for a stand alone endorsement.
We have asked him to record a stand alone endorsement, shall switch it over soon!
We tried giveaways on the channel before but haven’t had much interest, but charity giveaways are definitely something I’m looking to set up in the future
I work at Halfords head office, I always buy from our local store. The staff discount helps..
What was your best purchase from Halfords?
There are too many purchases to remember, my latest was buy 3 autoglym products and get one free lol
We’re in the UK, so we don’t really use imperial…we’ve got a 3/8” socket set. 😂 Yes, I know they are metric sockets, but it still made me laugh.

Thanks for the idea! It’s on our list 👌
I have had a load of Halfords screwdrivers, only trouble is they are so good that workmates etc. have lent and not returned them (half inched em)
You need to check out a company called Osaap. We route out all there shadow boards here in Australia and no hand finishing required.
I'll check them out! 👌
I have used the Halfords tools quite abit and i swear by them is better that they come with life time warrrenty as with what i do they could brake but touch wood they have not broken yet and i have had them chrome sockets on the impact be for now and still not broken grate videos you guys do
How many years have you had them?
@@ShadowFoam can't rember now but it is quite a long time

would love a video on the halfords advanced 36' 6 drawer tool chest fitted with shadow foam and allows you to showcase an entire tool box worth of shadow foam organised tools.
We would love to do that one too, perhaps another trip to Halfords is on the horizon!
'Showcase' - ahh, so you collect/display tools, rather than use them…
@@Tensquaremetreworkshopif you read it correctly they mean for shadow foam to showcase an entire box of tools to other users, not them personally.
@@byfunkyoid2917 Ahh, so you read it to mean they want them to create an art installation. I somehow doubt that is the motivation, but the poor grammar makes it uncertain.
@@TensquaremetreworkshopSo what if he does? What exactly is the issue you're raising here?
That’s so good. Can you do the same for the service cart please
Thanks Dayman, we’ll add it to the list!
Iv recently spent 100s on sets modular trays and loose tools love the halfords advanced range what they should do is allow customers to be able to create there own boxes using your shadow foam
That would be a great idea for Halfords! 👌
Just thinking out loud- what’s the feasibility of double layering the foam? For example a 10mm orange layer, and then a 20mm black layer that gets cut all the way through, and bonds to the orange layer? Saves on having to use a scalpel, and tearing the foam out- a cnc cutter or laser machine would give clean lines?
Probably out of reach for most diy people, but a possibility for those who have the equipment- unless you guys did a pre made version??
Not thought of that, but it’s an interesting idea! 👍
what about halfords socket modular tray into a packout compact organizer or packout slim organiser?

I don’t know why but whenever I see somewhere I know I am more keen to watch the video. Northwich Halfords 😮
You local mate?
Absolutely, live in Hartford 🎉🎉
Halfords stuff is generally pretty good but there are things to steer clear from as they just arent up to the task of bigger brand like snap on tools (but obviously much cheaper). In 3 years of mechanics i haven't broken a single socket from halfords, but I have broken the step down from 1/2" to 3/8". Other then that, their torx sockets which you get with their 200 something piece kits like to twist or snap easily. Other then that my tools from Halfords are pretty good. Rate them for the price especially with a trade card
Thanks for the tips mate! 👌

Is there any chance your selling your original Halfords foam tray for the ratchet spanners? Mines has had its day😂
Hahaha I would mate but Shadow Foam is better stuff

Iv had a Halfords Proffesional automotive toolkit for quite a few years now, the only problem I found is two of the ring ratchets have failed. I took them back to my local Halfords and they refused to honour the guarantee because the receipt I have is a thermal print out which fades over time so is now unreadable.... Iv had the kit for many many years and use it most weekends, its my "go to" kit when working on any of my vehicles.... Not a good recommendation for the "Lifetime Guarantee"....
Good video though TBH and Iv known about Shadowfoam for a while but didnt know about the Halfords boxes...
