- In my previous video about the Lorebeards I likened Elder Scrolls Lore to Religion. Now I'm going to go one step further and address some comments the previous video got and liken them to the same thing. The Human animal is just that, a pack animal, a social beast. Humans form tribes based on Social Groups, Politics, and Religion. From these tribes they come into conflict with rival tribes. What should be cut and dry facts get warped and twisted by the tribal mindset, causing anyone to believe otherwise to be an enemy. Contrary to popular belief this does NOT make them overtly hostile, but rather creates an unconscious bias where if you attempt to criticize one of the prime tenants of the tribe, then you become the tribe's enemy.

here's the thing, I don't always agree with your personal views/opinions etc, but you present your ideas without vitriol and stupidity, and I appreciate that, and I appreciate that I can hear other perspectives presented in an intelligent and coherent way.
That people are getting whiney over video game opinions just blows my mind though.
People can be very petty when they attach their egos to something they care about .
This is exactly the lesson I taught myself years ago when I noticed my cognitive dissonance of basing my identity on my hobbies and realizing that being obsessed with my hobbies and building a hill to die on by basing my self worth on the hobbies isn't a healthy way to live life. You can't learn new things or be open to new ideas/things if you make it so that the thing you like defines you as a person so you cant move away/on from it or get new hobbies. As I've grown up I've learned how to just treat my hobbies as hobbies instead of treating it as a part of me that I need to defend to the death.

Well said. I love how there is a larger, transferable message here. There are number of scenarios in society where tolerance is unjustly demanded and people can & will claim offence on just about anything which invades their personal sphere. I maintain the opinion that offence is taken, not given.
Indeed. He was so spot on about how some people attach their ego, identity and/or self-worth to some concept or belief. It makes them inflexible and incapable of seeing a different point of view or even the bigger picture. Such people do view criticism of that thing they like or hold dear as a personal attack and so they lash out.

As a young lorebeard with wispy tendrils on my wee tiny chin, your vids helped me tackle a lot of the more confusing aspects of TES lore and even encouraged me to find out my own answers and delve deeper. I was NOT into the lore before I watched your vids, but since then, I've really found a new joy and passion in researching it more, so thanks :D keep up the awesome work, man.

I don't claim to be smart in any way as far as the lore goes. But I think the way you present your perspective of the lore actually makes the lore understandable. Even the metaphysical stuff though confusing at times is understandable.

I dont think there is any fundamental disagreement here, I think your just reminding people their fantasy isn't reality. When you say things like "c0da is fanfiction" or "Bethesda owns the right to elder scrolls so only they can decide what is true in universe" your putting a lot of stress on people's ability to ignore those things; In other words your threatening or even breaking their suspension of disbelief. Your not really wrong about anything you say, but these are things the lore community has decided to deliberately forget. That's why they respond so angrily to you, its not because they necessarily disagree with you, they're just trying to maintain a particularly delicate state of mind.
Jed How is he putting alot of stress on people.. every company that owns something decides what is canon and what is fanfiction.. Just look at Star Wars. Disney erased almost every book and game that was not made by them from canon. It works like that in every game or movie.. Only here in TES comunity people act like fanfiction is real.. next time Bethesda creates a TES game people will be pissed because their fanfiction is not the way they know it.

The problem is that the things we like are part of our identity, just as aour memories, i mean what do you do when you try to describe yourself to someone that doesn't know you? yeah, you tell them what you like and what you don't like, that's why being a bit offended when someone criticizes the things we like is pretty normal.But no matter how normal this behaviour is, we should always try to listen to criticism, so that it can help us find flaws in our reasonings, if there are any, and therefore better ourselves. With politics listening to criticism is extremley useful, the other side could have some good ideas. Religion however is a different thing, you either accept it in its entirety or you reject it.

I actually really like the Christianity analogue. Your like the Catholic Church, with set scripture and canon, and the Kirkbride crew are like the Gnostics who accept many narratives even if they conflict with each other. In this context the word apocrypha is actually very fitting.

This kind of obsession people are willing to put into some imaginary things is troublesome. The 'lore community" and TES related communities in general are an interesting microcosm which draws many parallels to the real world. Your peeks into these worlds are interesting and educating, given that you understand the social dynamics behind it and comment on it. Passion is fun, obsession you project your psychological issues into is dangerous.

As someone who dwells heavily on political TH-cam - Gotta say, you have the best commentary on tribalism in general, even out of the usual talking heads on here. The reactionary attitudes, and painting the enemy as the worst, spot on.
Fun fact: around 80% of all interpersonal conflicts are caused by misunderstandings. (And could therefor be solved within minutes)
Misunderstandings can base in both misinterpreting what the other side sait, but also and just as likely, by people not saying what they really want to say (basically, interpreting your own choice of words wrong.)
Obviously, as we always know ourselves what we want to say, we have a hard time understanding why the other one does not seem to understand or even misunderstand.

Wasn't there an Elven star ship (Magical, but still a ship to travel between stars in the void) called the Sun Birds, and didn't the Empire attempt to make their own, but stopped the project as they saw it as too expensive? Furthermore, people are saying that Oblivion is actually space, and as the Sun Birds travel through Oblivion they are space/starshipsJust asking, as you clearly know more than I do (having only played ES Skyrim and reading through the wiki, and you having a whole channel about it. Honestly, I am a big fan of Sci Fi and Fantasy (Well, Sci Fi movies and games, Fantasy Books and ES) to find out that one of my favourite game franchises based in fantasy also deals with metaphysics AND extra-terrestrial travel and colonisation would be brilliant, though if this is not true it means that I am no longer trawling the internet for answers, so a win win.
A good example of Fantasy and Science combining, Reymond E Feist's RiftWar cycle, a fully fantasy book series that I adore, yet it explains the magic through hints at String Theory, wormholes, etc.

Haven't visited reddit for ages, so this might be less valid now, but look at r/shittyTESlore (and even r/TrueSTL) compared to r/teslore for a case study in this. The contrast is very telling.
It's not just that r/teslore is a place that suffers from the ludicrous 'canon doesn't exist, but at the same time, my headcanon is canon' disease... or that so many answers are based on wild speculation or just plain headcanon rather than actual canon (even if that canon is retconned or dubious)... or that this headcanon is painted as incontrovertible truth... or that it's misleading (or outright confusing) to newbies who might just have come by to ask a question about the Dragonborn only for the regulars to reel out ideas like mantling (which as an example is AFAIK purely OOG).
It's that, all the while, they have no sense of humour (or humility). It's a sign of dogmatism when definitions are twisted, opinions are mistaken for object fact, and questioning the status quo ends up with people flipping the table.
Meanwhile, those 'joke' subreddits are full of people who know the lore, love the franchise but are able to poke fun at it, and appreciate MK without being zealous Kirkbridians. Of course MK is a good writer, of course he has a brilliant imagination, and of course c0da is great fun... but come on, it's completely nuts fanfic, not the word of Jesus or something!
It's a real shame that a universe as deep and expansive as TES' attracts so much bigotry and ideology.

That's such a weak point to make. For example, imagine European settlers in the 16th century interacting with the native Americans. They took their land and introduced different branches of Christianity to them. Kind of how tiber septum (a breton. Because OOG lore is usually much, much more interesting than what Bethesda is currently doing. Don't know about you, but I think voidships made out of genegineered moths with giant ziggurats strapped / fused to their backs is better than... Skyrim's tiny Alduin.
