- This was all taken from a PUBLIC post on the PUBLIC Facebook Group for TESLore. Who is Zaric? The Lorebeards ask. I'm here to answer that question in a spectacular explosion of juvenile responses including but not limited to memes while responding to a facebook group I didn't know, nor care about until one of my followers brought it to my attention. Now it's time to have some fun I figure.
The Elder Scrolls is a series I'm rather passionate about as a VIDEO GAME series. As such I critique it quite a bit and for some reason folks come back with my VIDEO GAME critiques with lore explanations that don't improve, but rather just explain away the stupid design choices.
I have quite a bit of Elder Scrolls fanfiction, you can find it under my "Ideal Elderscrolls" series. I recommend checking it out, but headcanon is also fanfiction, that's why it's my "personal interpretation of the lore" DURRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrr. Anyway, let's get our trollfaces on for a fun video.

I actually like Zaric for his work and the depth he puts in his lore videos. He explains the TES lore and its true nature a lot better than other channels like ShoddyCast , and answered many questions I had for a while while streaming on Twitch , I really don't see why people hate on him so much , I'm a bit under the impression that I'm the only one who genuinely appreciates what he's doing.

2 reasons ofwhat's wrong with them. Number one is that they don't know what's going on and so they need help to learn and see what is the picture (If they can put their pride away). You guys are ridiculous if you really believe that your fanfiction is cannon. The games are cannon because they are the main medium the source material. Your ideas are fairy tails. Even the D&D has its cannon or at least a main timeline aka. the 5th edition that build on previous books. But unlike TES D&D has established the existence of many dimensions and timelines.

Well there are two kinds of countries, those who wore feathers and those who have put a man on the moon.
The minute you stray away from canon in an RPG... Guess what? You just created your own canon. See 40+ years of D&D sessions.
It all seems pretty simple to me: Canon is whatever the rights-holder says is canon. Anything else is a fan's (or haters) head-canon/fan-fiction (whichever equally-valid term irritates less), even if it comes from Kirkbride himself (excluding anything officially authorized by Zenimax/etc.).
Also, those statements concerning ESO from whatshisname - they don't make your head-canon more official or more valid than they were before, or make even the idea of a 'canon' less or more legitimate. What they do it make ESO canon, and the single players games the canon-fantasies/folk-tales of persons in the fictional ESO world. Your own ES-based fantasies and stories, your head-canon/fan-fiction, are no more or less official than they were before, and the idea or legitimacy of 'canon' & Elder Scrolls is unchanged.
Ones wonders about such a world where the previous words in this comment are controversial, or overly telling of what type of person or gamer I am.

When I hear the term "Lorebeard" I think of a wise old sage with an awesomely long and full beard. As he walks down the street, he passes 2 young people arguing about something. He then reaches into it and pulls out a gigantic codex, flips open a page from it and settles the dispute peacefully by explaining to them what the facts are and that all else is a matter of hearsay and opinion. This is his calling in life, it's what he does. I'd personally find this type of man quite helpful. Sadly, it seems most people just want to live in their own fantasy so much that they can't even get the facts from a video game straight. Also, a lot of posers who claim to have played a game but they haven't.
In any case, I love your videos Zaric. You are an asshole. After all, these days "asshole" is code for somebody who tells the truth without a single shred of care for someone's precious fee-fee's. Keep up the great work and the top notch jackassery good sir. XD

TES is very interesting case study of what tvtropes calls "Word of God".
We have pretty much everything we wouldn't want to see here.
- Problem of Original Author vs Copyright holder
- Problem of assigning authority in a group project
- Problem of contradictions in different installments in the series
- Problem of Word of God's ability to override work's content
And many others.
Add intentional "Unreliable Narrator" vagueness into the mix, and it's a perfect recipe for disaster.
I don't know any other work of media that has as much things going horribly wrong at the same time.
The main tragedy of the situation:
People developing the game don't care about lore whatsoever and prefer polishing their gameplay "explore-fight-loot-sell" formula instead.
And people caring about the lore are not in the position to do anything about it.

Well, any real fan becomes a part of a "cult" of sort. And you know how rival theories "coexist" in cults :). Usually they lead to splits and fights, so yeah, at least we are not cutting each others' heads off. Zaric makes a good point.
I think I've noticed an interesting parallel between ES and D&D versions.
ES1/original D&D: In depth, heavy role-playing, somewhat difficult for new players.
ES2/2nd Edition: Refines the original system but keeps the role-play elements.
ES3: 3.0/3.5: Has a greater balance of mechanics and roleplay, most saw this as a turning point (ES for the worse, D&D for the better)
ES4/5/4th Edition: Game becomes more casual and begins eliminating things from older versions that people liked.
D&D 5E: Hasn't happened yet for ES, but a form in which players can easily access the game but roleplay and the more hardcore mechanics do make a return.

Oh my God, that Schick quote makes me physically nauseous... I started playing TES with a demo of Daggerfall that was just the starter dungeon I believe. Then bought Morrowind when it came out. I have several friends who has only played Skyrim, mostly on consoles. They know shit about the lore and they couldn´t care less. When TES:Online came and tried it out, everyone of us said it was soulless and just like every other MMO.
Is it just my friends? Seems to be the consensus that the rest of the series is the real TES and TES:online is just an embarassing cash grab with very small merits.

I dont think there is any fundamental disagreement here, I think your just reminding people their fantasy isn't reality. When you say things like "c0da is fanfiction" or "Bethesda owns the right to elder scrolls so only they can decide what is true in universe" your putting a lot of stress on people's ability to ignore those things; In other words your threatening or even breaking their suspension of disbelief. Your not really wrong about anything you say, but these are things the lore community has decided to deliberately forget. That's why they respond so angrily to you, its not because they necessarily disagree with you, they're just trying to maintain a particularly delicate state of mind.
TES is like Pokemon, each iteration (game, manga, anime) is a different canon but all have the same lore.
The video could've just been summed up as:
"I wear siuts, piss on dumbasses and wear sunglasses indoors like a nerdy 13-year-old. Also lore sometimes."

Regarding "Thalmor unmaking the universe": I remember arguing with a guy who said this, and that it's the reason why you should support Stormcloaks. I asked: "Why would the universe be unmade with the removal of Talos worship?" and he unloaded a whole bunch of fanfiction upon me. But TES is not the only series where people have fancy stuff for fanfiction. Warcraft has "headcanons".
If Kirkbride was such an amazing writer, he'd write his own book or game series and be known for that, instead of riding on the coat tails of a Project he was only one small part of a whole decade ago.
I don't care much for some of zarics beliefs, but it is entirely up to him to make those decisions. All I care about is hearing his thoughts on games, primarily Bethesda games. Still this guy has my full attention as the authority on, tes as I haven't learned more from any other on this site.

I do not know you as a person nor have I ever commented on anything you posted, but I enjoy your work. Whether its right, wrong, or somewhere in between it provides perspective and is entertaining. It is ridiculous someone would get so bent out of shape for something that does not ultimately matter.
They're just in denial about the fact that tes lore is a humongous ball of bandaids. They want it to be a nice ball, smooth and well constructed, not made of bandaids. In actuality, its a mess, though a very interesting mess.

Also, I think with regards to Morrowind and Daggerfall doing more with story than later games simply comes down to this: because they were limited, the devs worked harder to make up for those limitations with better story-telling and more originality.
As an analogy, it's like how sometimes (sometimes, as in it's a stereotype) very attractive people don't think they need to have a personality or be interesting.
I know this is really late but I felt a subjective opinion can be important regardless of timeframe and so I really wanted to say something. I personally contribute a lot to the Uesp and research canon sources extensively to try and establish something from an authoritative and objective standpoint so it can be discussed further or read easily. The only sources used for establishing canon is the video games and the official novels. Any other "source" is looked at and certainly appreciated from a writing standpoint, but not from a canon standpoint. I find a frustratingly overwhelming amount of people who misconstrue really cool and good writing, and their own subjective views of those writings, as actual canon because of the purported "subjectivity of Elder Scrolls". While I can certainly attest to the amount of depth and information the canon lore has, and how many events in them are subject to interpretation similar to events in real life, those "interpretations" need to be in the canon material itself to even be considered as relavant to establishing the different viewpoints on a given matter in the lore. Someone writing a fanfiction on what they think something is in the canon and claiming it is valid because "TES is subjective blahblah unrealiable narrator blahblah". Yes. TES is subjective in universe as when you have a ton of sentient races and cultures together there are going to be differing opinions on almost everything. But *you* are not one of those races and cultures. You are not living in that universe. Therefore anything you write is purely your own idea of the lore and would not be considered by someone in TES universe. Mundus, Oblivion, Aetherius, etcetera, are fictitious places with an insane amount of explanation going on. We are merely observers. No matter how much we choose to write our own fun stories, or to simply research and try to archive it, will never change that fact. We observe and do with that information what we will.
As just an added little note in case anyone reads this far. Despite being adamant on the canon and the differentiation between it and fanfictions, I also enjoy to roleplay sometimes and write my own short stories using TES games as a medium for telling those stories. In those short stories, I will frequently rewrite the lore for myself to fit a more ideal narrative (ideal in my opinion) and tell a story that I think is more enjoyable to the audience. That audience being me, myself, and I. In those short stories the lore is whatever I want that I feel makes sense, and is in no way indicative of any sort of canon for TES. But never would I take those short stories and purport them as canon just because they sound cool to me. Fanfiction is great as it's just a way to improve your writing skills and express your creativity using something you like as a foundation. But just as Zaric said here, it doesn't mean it's canon.

Hail, fellow lorebeards! *tips Colovian fur helm* I'm pleased to hear some guy named Dillon thinks I'm one of the most toxic members of the Elder Scrolls fanbase. I do indeed complain when people cite ESO lore as definitive because I prefer Bethesda's c0da, but that hasn't stopped me from dumping 350+ hours of my life into the game! And Kirkbride's C0DA would be great as a psychedelic sci-fi adventure if he could just bring himself to let go of the Elder Scrolls universe.
it's refreshing to see someone who doesn't insist that everything is canon even if they like it. personally i don't like michael kirkbrides work that much, it just isn't my thing, and the fact that people keep trying to say that C0DA and all this vague and pretentious bullshit is canon in TES just makes me dislike it even more. i like discussing things on the TES subreddit until i come across one of those people, like the ones in your video, that cannot wrap their head around the fact that not everything is canon, often discussion with them is futile because they can do all the mental gymnastics they need in order to state that there is no canon, while simultaneously saying that you need to cross reference sources, but they cannot understand that canon and headcanon are not the same thing.
as for lorebeards, when i hear the word, i think of pseudo intellectuals who take themselves way too seriously and try to gatekeep lore, like you don't know anything if you aren't a "lorebeard". basically a neckbeard with an incredibly nasally voice who just likes to lord what little power they have on obscure forums over others.
An entertaining, narcissistic ass, wouldn't have it any other way. Seriously its half the reason i enjoy watching these vids and streams.
Great video, Zaric! I myself post 'apocrypha' on the Teslore subreddit, but I still think all your points are valid. There is a canon, a continuity which Bethesda upholds for each game, and oog texts are interesting but not part of Bethesda's vision for the game series. Incidentally, that doesn't stop oog texts from being included (like Many-headed Talos being quoted by Heimskr) and therefore becoming part of the canon. When I post my apocrypha it's with a view to my own headcanon and my own way of seeing TESLORE, in no way do I force that vision as canon, and certainly not on people who have only begun to dip their toe into the 'deeper lore'.
I love your channel and think you're completely right, people do treat Kirkbride as the prophet Veloth of TESLORE fan-fiction; I accept a few of his ideas but also think some stuff he's written seems a bit silly or out of place. If we're not careful we can talk with religious fervour over these matters and blow something out of proportion, let's ditch toxic arguments about forcing headcanon as canon and just focus on the love of the games and the rich world they have to offer.

I shudder at "lorebeard" because it is indicative of the kind of people these fellows are. They elevated a lore continuum above a ton of other great writing. They cannot admit that there are flaws, often extremely big ones, in TES writing so they attack whomever criticises it. I've come under attack in the past for saying something that amounts to "skyrim is just minecraft with better graphics" because its world is almost horrifyingly empty and lifeless compared to some other games that I've played. I do like skyrim (also oblivion and morrowind) for their often deep background lore, but the games themselves feel quite shallow apart from some outstanding lore.
I've also compared skyrim and oblivion to the games of German developer Pyranha Bytes, mostly famous for Gothic 1 and 2, which were contemporaries of morrowind and oblivion. Gothic 1 and 2 had a fraction of the deep lore that both TES games provided, and many parts were generic fantasy, but the plot and lore filled up their medium large worlds to the brim with atmosphere instead. While Morrowind has very static npc Gothic 1 has low poly people cooking, making gestures while talking to you and other npc, and eating. When oblivion touted their AI, gothic had people do the same long before and they even took a leak on a tree behind a house sometimes.
In the end they're all great games, but for these kinds of people this is a zero sum game, and if TES games are not perfect it means they're bad. The only criticism they accept is the one that doesn't matter in their own head(canon).
As a kid who started with Skyrim, I actually really like your Lore videos and want to get into the older games to learn about the series' roots. I have Morrowind and Oblivion (though I can't mod them since my PC isn't powerful enough) and was wondering if there was anything that I should expect when going into them?
