Directions & Intros | Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion BEST at conveying | Skyrim, Fallout 4, Morrowind

  • Just another POINTLESS RAMBLING VIDEO about how NPCs give directions as well as the Intro sequences in Elder Scrolls Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim, as well as Fallout 3 & 4. I also, once again get into the good points and faults of the various games, because again each game has something they are better at than the others.
    No, the quest indicator is stupid.

    Completely agree on the fake urgency. What makes open world games so appealing is that you have control over what you want to do and when you want to do it. Todd Howard said this many times which makes it all the more perplexing that he seems so hell bent on making an urgent story. He said this in interviews that this was intentional.
    I think it's extremely detrimental to an open world RPG to have such a story because a player that roleplays wants to follow the urgent call to action but does so at the expense of his enjoyment of the game. Whereas the player that takes his time gets to enjoy the game at the expense of narrative cohesion. Witcher 3 also suffered from this. In some way it is even worse in that game as you can't even just follow the main quest like you could in FO4 and Skyrim as the monsters aren't level scaled. You are required to ignore the main quest to level up enough to be able to complete the main quest.
    I don't understand why people haven't figured this out yet. To make a compelling open world story you need to contextualize the gameplay. Meaning you need to give reason why you NEED to do side activities, why you NEED to take your time to get stronger, hone your skills in order to finish the story. Morrowind once again did this best as you said, but Oblivion also had some decent ideas with one main quest requiring a daedric artifact which a low level player wouldn't have gotten access to.

    The reason why the "I'll mark it on your map" thing works in Arena & Daggerfall is because so big that they need it to be enjoyable, I don't have a problem with it in general, but I do have a problem with it in Bethesda's current scale.

    I just wanted to make a small comment about the Skyrim Civil War. I actually chose Imperial and I hadn't played the other games (or at least to any great length). For me it was about a logical argument about who would ultimately empower Skyrim over the Aldmeri Dominion. I while yes the civil war could have been so much better, working within what we have, I honestly don't see how Stormcloaks would have been the right choice. Now keep in mind that choice was also back in my 2012 play, long before I played ESO (yes I know what people think of it from a lore point of view). And even with watching tons of lore videos, watching explanations, playing ESO, and more, I'll always side with the Imperials rather than the Stormcloaks. But also keep in mind, the Mead emperors are a FAR cry from the Septim line.... and are far weaker. So when people make the argument that Stormcloaks would be closer to what Skyrim really needs, they're right in terms of the level of brutality and determination needed. But they are dead wrong on actual army strength. Sorry I know this has little to do with the actual video but I felt compelled to share my thoughts after you went over the fact that most people choose the Stormcloaks over Imperials if they only played Skyrim.

    • @jamesmccloud7535
      @jamesmccloud7535 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well most people do go stormcloak, some imperial but mostly stormcloak apparently. Even me, knew nothing about the lore and the game kept telling me indirectly that the stormcloaks was the right side. I was with them in the beginning, imperials were trying to execute me, Ralof was charismatic and fighting for freedom and honor. Only when I learned more about the lore, the more I realize how naive I was back then.

    How to "fix" radiant quests: Have your voice actors say the most important locations and items and enemies. Have a system that can tell where something is from a location and voice act cardinal directions and simple/common instructions. Maybe have some of the places nearest the big cities have voice acted directions, ie. Riverwood to Whiterun. Make it all modular!
    "Hello there, stranger."
    [Can I help you?]
    "Me? Yes. I actually had my 'elven sword' stolen from me by a 'bandit' a couple of days ago. He took off 'west' to his camp he called 'Fangtusk Hold'. Could you get that back to me? I'll pay you for it's return."
    [I'll get it]
    "Thank you! Thank you! To the 'west', 'over the bridge'. Please be quick!"

    I like to turn off the waypoint in Skyrim, press the 'show on map' button, and the map shows me a general area I need to go. It doesn't always work and it can be frustrating, but I usually have a lot of fun blundering through caves and dens wondering, "Is this the right one?" Getting lost is part of the fun to adventuring.

    I didn't realize how much I hated waypoints until I played Human Revolution for the first time. Now I love that game , but when coming from the original, I pretty quickly caught onto the problems that I had with the system. Since you don't need to take the time to listen to their directions, this encourages you to just follow a waypoint without paying attention. Thankfully, the game was designed so you _could_ turn it off if you wanted to. But still, in the original Deus Ex, you had to listen to every word that NPCs say in order to figure out what to do, and *because of this* you also listen to the sort of worldbuilding they discuss while telling you all the information. Removing it (or giving the option to remove it) is a MUST for any story-centric game for me.

    omfg I so agree with you on the "go here" marker.... I have no nostalgic ties to Morrowind, I was one of those kids who got Oblivion as his first ES game... and now Im playing Morrowind for the first time and it is hard..... real hard... but the difference is in Oblivion and Skyrim I liked seeing my char's wallet balloon with gold, and seeing my char's level go up, as a result I spammed quests just to see those 2 things. in Morrowind however, I have made so many mistakes, but I have used the wiki as little as possible, gotten lost more times than I can count, and I am enjoying the game for the simple "its an adventure" not "gimme gold!" aspect

      Divinity 2, my good man. It's not technically D&D, but it's the closest you'll get without going into turn-based RPGs. Also, that's Divinity 2, not Divinity: Original Sin 2. Because of it's age, some people confuse Div2 with OS2, since they're both part of the Divinity series.

    With skyrim and oblivion, you get out of it what you put into it. All the story is there, but you have to go and get it. You can run into bilegulch mine and just wack everything with your sword, and that is all that will be there. Or you can sneak in listen to the bandits talking, read every journal and piece together a story of a poor man enslaved and worked to death and tension between the bandits and their leader. The same goes for the combat. You can just wack things with your sword and that will be that, or you can juggle different weapons, spells, buffs, poisons, and enchantments.

    When I learned FO4 started before the war, I was thinking it would be a variant of the FO3 intro. You spend a few days in a tutorial/back story. You use workshop mode to decorate for Halloween, for example. You use ability and skill checks (ha!) to perform various activities and household errands like cook dinner, repair the car and/or program Mr. Handy. You go into various social situations to characterize such as the supermarket where someone buys the last ham, say, and you can try and get it from them, or a town meeting where the townspeople start losing their minds and you can diffuse the chaos or stoke the fire. Wishful thinking but I enjoy what ifs. I also thought you'd be able to pick the name of your son, from a list of course. Shaun? What a Nate and Nora name to decide on.

  • @chipputer
    @chipputer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The rant about the potions is actually wrong, though. Hadvar/Ralof tells you to look for supplies in there, namely potions, and the enemies that you fight mention potions before you even engage them. Beyond that, you get an (Optional) objective telling you to look for them and you even get a quest marker pointing at a barrel full of potions for you to look directly at and see what they look like.
    Not to mention two tables just barely off to the side (well within your field of view) that have potions sitting right on them in plain view that the player now knows what they look like.
    I don't know how you seem to miss this by labeling it just as optional as the jail cell with the mage and the lockpicking minigame but I'll chalk it up to you not seeming to enjoy Skyrim that much and you simply haven't played through the tutorial area very much as a result.

    You can skip Skyrim cart scene by quicksaving after getting off cart, just keep that save and load that when you want to start a new game. When you name your character it will create a different save file and the cart save will never overwrite unless you do so yourself. And we have Alt Start Mods, where even if you don't want to start away from Helgen, you can start at a camp right outside it.

    Hey, Zak. I'm not sure you'll read this comment but, what if Oblivion had a timetable of altleast five in game years. The emperor still gets assassinated at the beginning, but it's just a precursor to something worse. The dragonfire is slowly dying off rather than instantly and the more you wait the more Daedra starts to roam the land. Until the final year comes in and you get a game over. But you keep the main questline about finding the heir

    I can still remember getting lost for a day and a half of my gaming time trying to find a quest for the fighters guild in Morrowind. I ended up all over the place. When I found it, I realized I had passed by it many, many times. I simply never looked to that side of me while walking down that path. I had gone back to town, consulted my journal, stared for long periods of time at the physical map that came with the box (Still have that !) and was pretty annoyed for a while. But, at the same time, it was one of the most difficult and rewarding journey's I had in Morrowind. This was all before I had internet in my house so no wiki or walkthroughs. Saw so many other dungeons (and cleared them) and areas that I wouldn't have seen otherwise too.
    I can see where someone would give up or get angry with the game, but it really does make it feel like an adventure.

    I have a different issue with radiant quests. In Oblivion, a quest location might have characters, enemies, settings, and dialog that fit with the context of the quest given to you. In Skyrim, you're pitted against bandits who have no clue about anything relating to your quest, in non-descript hideouts that make most of the side quests feel very copy-pasted. Let's bring back detailed quests with stories instead of "Can you retrieve my sword/helmet/book/ring? I was lost/stolen in a cave/fort/ruin. I'll mark it on your map."

    Considering the entire crux of the motivations inherent to the heart of the Skyrim experience is "there cool stuff I can get?" For me, the most useful thing about having things marked on my map is so that I don't forget about them when I decide to veer off along the way.
    If they told me the directions to something, I would still get out my map and mark it myself. I even do that IRL before and after Google Maps became a thing, but the overworld map in Skyrim is not a psychic Google Maps, it represents the knowledge your character has about the land. In the beginning, he only knows the locations of the major cities like anyone would (maybe they should have a fog of war over it that is only removed as a perk if you're a Nord).
    I know that it's more fun like when you get those treasure hunter maps with cryptic directions, and you have to go and try to find them, but all I'm saying is that: What can we do when the system is hardly violating any Role Playing boundaries? Is it not?
    What I don't do is fast travel.

      arturboy well you may enjoy it (and I honestly feel bad about arguing against someone else's enjoyment) but the biggest problem that I have with the quest marker is that it acts as some sort of Pavlovian cue to obliviously follow to your destination. It's another brick wall, instead of an adventure.

    • @aero5560
      @aero5560 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      CyberNinjaZero when you say getting better at game mechanics, I'd say maybe, and if so, it's literally not noticeable, seeing as they take out other things, like dodging, personality, spell crafting etc.

    • @cyberninjazero5659
      @cyberninjazero5659 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aero my opinion of personality and the attributes is the same as the skills. Some attributes were redundant (Agility was just Strength for thieves) Speed became useless with the advent of the Sprint mechanic.
      Which leads me to the skills themselves when people say that they were "dumbed down" They ignore the ENTIRE innovation and invention of the Perk Tree system this was the real reason Alteration and Mystcism were combined not because some stupid casual couldn't handle 20 skills but was able to grasp 18. The Perk Tree revolutionized character progression they meant that players could actively choose how they want to develop when people say "Blunt and Blade have been merged" they ignore that they are in separate branches and that you could still make a character that "focuses" while ignoring the path you don't want. Furthermore there are some skills that were never good that were saved by this like Mercantile.
      Accusation for dumbing down #3 weapons and armor no longer break down: the reason? Smithing. The introduction of smithing changed the incentives why would players improve their weapons and armors if using them just knocked them down to basic or worse made them unusable? forget that why would they ever MAKE their own? The removal of equipment degradation was to make the new crafting system (which I admit I love so maybe I'm biased in favor of it) viable.
      The only real dumbing down left in my eyes is the removal of Greaves (Which saddens me while Morrowind was overboard Oblivion had just the right number of armor pieces) and more importantly spell crafting. This is where I agree with you but have to note something the Spell system was massively changed from the last game and the one before it now spells had different types of cast like sustained (novice level) and charged add to that duel wielding it maybe that they were simply unable to add a crafting system for it within the development timeline (although I for one think the best spell in the game is Fireball so that was most of my usage of magic after I learned it. Aside from Lightning Storm).

      +CyberNinjaZero Holy shit you ripped the worlds out of my mouth. I'll say that Oblivion had the worst writing out of them all. The world space lacked the sense of identity which Kirkbride crafted. I assume that the new writers didn't understand the lore and world of TES better than Kirkbride. In the past 10 years, the quality of writing in Bethesda began to improve (Skyrim and Fallout 4 in particular), introducing interesting history and lore to newer games.

    Hey Zaric! Have you ever played the Vigilant mod for Skyrim? I personally thought it was one of the best quest mod ever made, but I thought that it went into some very obscure lore. Do you have any intentions of of reviewing it and discussing its lore?

  • @Xegethra
    @Xegethra 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was probably just gonna go with the Stormcloaks, not because I cared for the cause it was just easier to go with them. Both sides lost my interest I just wanted to finish a game I paid for.....but then my save corrupted and I couldn't be bothered to start again nor was I interested enough to reload a previous save.....
    For those radiant quests I think they should have given the voice actor some vague locations to give you. Somewhere in some city, or part of the land...he doesn't know the specifics but the the game picks a general area and the corresponding voice line. Then you can go there and actually have to look around for the target.....unless you put the marker on. If you have it off, go look have a snoop.

    "I'll mark it on your map" is okay if say the quest character lives in Bruma and you're currently in the Imperial City and they want you to come to their house there, it makes sense that they know where their own house is. But if it's like "Bandits attack every night but we don't know where they're coming from". Then they should say to you something like "They could be hiding in the caves just about south of here" or something. New Vegas has a quest like that for the NCR where you had to find a Khan hiding in a cave somewhere.

    In terms of the quest markers being essential for random gen quests, there's a better solution.
    Here's an example of a conversation
    You: Got any work?
    Quest Giver: There's a group of bandits nearby. They've been terrorizing travelers and merchants.
    You: Where are they?
    Quest Giver: Take this note. It'll have all the details you'll need about the quest.

    They could have skip straight to the cutting block screen like you just regained consciousness and done the introduction from there. They could of let you choose to be a storm cloak from there putting your head on the block if you did or ulfric if you didn't then the dragon comes. Once you get your hands free you should be able to jump outside the city skipping the rest of the tutorial. They could just put tutorial in brackets to highlet to go the other way if you wanted to do it.
    For the marker they could have the option to mark an area rather then the exact location.

  • @HPD1171
    @HPD1171 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    its funny because when I played skyrim for the first time it was before I had played any of the other games in the title and i was completely new to it. However i am incredibly impatient so naturally when I was greeted with the unskippable cutsceen and about 30 seconds of smashing esc and enter, i got up to make some tea and came back to the create character interface and instinctively picked high elf since that is what I play in D&D. At the time I thought that the game was going to be based around northern medieval Europe with dragon mythology because that is what the trailer suggested and was completely surprised to find non humans characters. I Remember when i played a second time (i don't remember what class, probably spellsword or something as the first one was a mage) i watched through that insufferable cutsceen since i remember the first time around i was rather confused as to why I was imprisoned and wanted to find out what happened. boy was i disappointed and it just raised more questions. why the hell did my character cross the border illegally? I would have applied for citizenship and done the process legally if that was an option. they could have even made the application paperwork in a similar manner to how the intro to morrowind worked, missed opportunity there. And why did that one guy say "damn elves" right in front of me when I was one. Oh wait, thats right. they put the character creation after the cutsceen so they would not need to script multiple versions of the intro, rendering its entire purpose completely useless. how convenient. And who are the storm cloaks and the empire, some background story would have been nice like you see in pretty much ever other fantasy game that exists! throughout that second gameplay I kept thinking about that cup of tea i could have had had i not watched that intro. Damn shame!

Valve has Gary's Mod, Nintendo has Mario Maker, why aren't more companies jumping on this band wagon?

  • @LeSingeAffame
    @LeSingeAffame 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    About the "fake emergency" bit, would it have been better if, let's say, they needed the Amulet of Kings in Oblivion to open the Gates to Oblivion ? Mehrunes Dagon could still send minor daedra, and the Mythic Dawn would try to track you down until they have the Amulet (in which case there is a REAL urgency, like when you have to close the big gate in under 30 minutes or so) / you defeat them all.
    For Skyrim, we could imagine that Alduin needed the power of the Last Dragonborn to dominate the world ? Like you train with the Greybeards / do some random shit, Alduin's influence is quite weak (some dragons here and there attacking villages - that could make for some quests like "Defend Riverwood" where you have to kill whatever dragons are attacking Riverwood), then you decide to confront him directly, and either you win, but he manages to trap a part of your power, letting him flee to Sovngarde and consume the souls of the dead, or you get pwned, he absorbs most of your powers, and then the dragon threat is real. Far more dragon attacks, dragons being far more dangerous, and with actual consequences (villages being burned down, parts of cities being destroyed - even if temporarely, at least until the main quest is finished), and if all of the holds fell to him, you've got no choice but to attack him directly/he comes to you and boast about having defeated the legendary Dragonborn.
    In both cases, you can pretty much ignore the main quest, there may be some minor inconveniences (random daedric or fanatic attacks on Oblivion / minor dragon attacks in Skyrim), but you could tie it to the first quest (getting to Jauffre / fighting the first dragon) so players who don't want to follow it at all aren't bothered with it (or you could justify the attacks by Mythic Dawn cultists by them trying to destabilize the region, and say the same for the dragon attacks, and that some other people might be trying to fight them)
    Don't know how good/possible to do it would be though, I never wrote a big and complete story, so it might turn out to be far worse than what we have now

    Although i do use alternate start now i don't really mind the cart ride, It's undeniably atmospheric and if it weren't for the rest of the game you'd think they were setting up some kind of awesome 'Civil War' style questline ;-P . There's also some great lines in it, 'My gods are smiling on me imperial, can you say the same?!' (actual goosebumps), 'Legends don't burn down villages' etc and some good character work with the child being told to go inside for example. It's just let down by the suddenness of your execution and deus ex Alduin. The opening 'dungeon' is mercifully short and can be raced through double time with no penalty and the setup in Riverwood is really well done. Fallout 4 is FUCKING TORTUROUS by comparison almost made worse by the fact it's ostensibly shorter, Oblivion's lasts an eternity but is made bearable by Oblivion's broken yet fiendishly addictive levelling mechanics/systems and how even the opener can be optimised to get the most for your build. Fallout 4 is by far the worst, Morrowind's is the best of the 21st century Beth games but that's because it's four rooms long.

    Quest indicators can be good, but should be more like a directional help based on what your character knows (in the hills behind city, down at the creek, the woods in the valley, the mine in the mountains) but not dowsing rods like they have in skyrim and oblivion.

  • @jackmaney4276

    The main thing that drove me away from the Dead Rising series was that Dead Rising 2's main objective (get more Zombrex for Katie....over and over and over again....) continually kept me from exploring areas and scavenging for items to combine into new weapons at workbenches. That exploration was the most fun part of the game for me, and the game itself actively fought against letting me have that fun.
    I'd have dropped the Elder Scrolls franchise like a hot potato if any of the games had a timer to complete the main quest, even if the lack of urgency kinda kills immersion.

    to be honest, I rather have a cart scene rather then be told I'm pre-ordain to do everything before I even learn how to swing a sword. At least Skyrim doesn't immediately go "You are Pre-Ordain to save us!". In Skyrim , it's "hey, why don't you come to my town my Prisoner-buddy". It's actually quite a while until you actually become the dragon Born, and even then, it's a while longer before you can actually go along the process of saving everyone.

      True, this is kind of one of the things that kind of annoyed me about the Elder Scrolls. It would be interesting to see what would happen if Bethesda went all the way one way or another. Like they make a liner game 100% or make a open world game that doesn't involve prophecy or pre-ordain. They sort of came close in the later part of Oblivion, where you are actually not the one who stops the Oblivion Invasion, it's Martin. However, that feels like trying to band aid a 3 day old open wound, a little late and would have been better off not there.

    skyrim was first "real" elderscrolls game, as in it was the first one I played a lot, I had previously played oblivion when I borrowed it for a week from a friend, and knew morrowwind was "good" but never played or saw anything about it. There was so much pushing you against the empire, and the only reason I even chose them was because I wanted to pick the opposite of what seemed right. After playing a lot of skyrim, and hearing more and more about morrowwind as I got into modding, I decided to go back and play that, fuck was it better, the only hastle was modding the game (as I was a noob) to get it to be a bit nicer then base game.

      I agree that that is probably the norm, but I am one who in fact doesnt follow that trend, I spent a fuckton of hours into fo3 and loved it to death, despite its flaws. But when I eventually got NV, even during my first play through it became my favourite game. now I have around 1k hours in each, at least based on steam, but I played each on console as well first, and had fallen in love with them there.
