      Almost all of Rich’s PUBG criticisms apply equally to Fortnite, warzone, et al. I’m gonna say he was unbelievably wrong; the data doesn’t lie. Frankly, he needed to gut gud at solo play, but he didn’t make any effort. Making this entire critique a waste of everyone’s time. A rare mis step for the great rich evans

    I see so many comments that say they shouldn't be even reviewing this game at all because they are bad at it, or that they don't typically play this type of game. I don't really think that's fair. The point of their reviews, whether rlm is looking at films or games, is to tell you their opinions and their point of view concerning whatever they happen to be reviewing. They deeply explain why they feel certain ways about games and what makes them good or bad to them.
    For the same reason people watch shows like The Completionist, Moist Meter, Balrog Game Room reviews, or go to sites like IGN or GameSpot, these videos exist. People are just giving their opinions, sometimes a rating based on some criteria they have predetermined.
    Even if you disagree with the things they say that doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to say them.

      Its because this game started out as a mod for another game called "arma" for pc. The game mode became so popular because of the mod, people who have been there from the start, protect its legacy to their own detriment.

    I've played about 50 hours with my friends. Their complaints aren't unfounded, and I can't blame them for not liking the game. But personally, I think that the suspense in waiting for that 5 second shootout that can perma-kill you at any time makes this game addictive. Its been a while since I've played a game that makes me so tense. And I think that the long intervals of quiet preparation and planning for short fights leaves me MORE satisfied when I kill someone. I encourage people to give this game a try, and play it with a friend or two. Having a buddy to talk to keeps things from getting TOO quiet.

    All I hear about the white circle is that it's placement is totally random. From my time playing the game, the white circle always tends to center on the most populated areas. So if you drop far away from everyone else, you're going to spend most of the game chasing the circle. Anyone else notice this?

    • @quark_E
      @quark_E 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      amnryou eh, there are populated areas spread around so odds are it will shrink around or near one of them. That being said, if you happen to be far away from the white circle you should just go looking for a vehicle. For whatever reason Jack and Rich don't understand this and never go for one. And then they complain that if you happen to be really far away at the start of the game you're screwed. You're not, I've gone from the very top of the map all the way to the very bottom in a boat to get in the circle once. It's completely do able with a vehicle, and a little clock awareness.

    • @TheKilk123
      @TheKilk123 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Its just that the mist popular areas are generally in the middle of the map, and being in the centre increases the chance of being in to or even just near the circle

    I can't deny any of what they are saying. But when you have a squad for 4 and you're all good. It can be a fantastically addictive game. The squad tactics can be just fantastic. In squad you actually get into firefights and coordinate flanking manoeuvres. There are no battles in solo. No big firefights. But in squad there are. But like Rich said, he isn't a social gamer. You really have to be a social gamer to enjoy PUBG.

    Their main complaint is "I don't know what killed me or why" then they cut to footage of them trying start fist fights with random people on school while being shot at. Don't do that, don't just mindlessly attack everything you see.
    This clip is also perfect 16:06 you could have won that fight, you can hear him run in long before he starts shooting and despite him sneaking up on you you both start shooting at roughly the same time. He is only using a ump that could have been a close fight but you panicked and shot him one time in the chest after spazing out all over the place and jumping.

    Cue to a video where player on the second floor of a building clearly hears a guy enter the house, walks around alarming the person that someone's there and keeps his back to the guy so that he's not ready for the immediate gun fight.
    If I got a kill on a guy that's turtled up in a house I'm feeling great even if they're making mistakes left and right. Rando there took a risk and got the kill for it.

    The game demands a lot of situational awareness. The clip at the end is a perfect example of being unforgivably sloppy. At the beginning of a match, its a no-brainer to be aware of if other chutes are coming down near you. If you were looking, you would have seen where that person landed and what house they went into, so you can run into the *other* house, buying you precious seconds to maybe grab your own gun unmolested - maybe they didn't see you come down because they ran inside too fast, so you can now get the drop on them. Maybe they'll freeze up, letting you get into a good position. If you just mindlessly run after someone who has a head start on you, and take your fists to a gunfight, of course you'll get shot in the face. Luck plays a factor, but much less of one than Rich and Jack make it seem.

  • @korlack7276
    @korlack7276 7 ปีที่แล้ว +80

    So Rich and Jack's opinions aren't wrong here, but they come from a place of just scratching the surface of the game.
    1: I often play chasing the blue line. Once you learn how the blue line scales damage, you can actually play a decent amount of the game behind the blue line if you focus your searching on medical supplies (Sodas, pills, bandages, etc...). This actually gives you some breathing room because most action will focus within the white line.
    2: You get surprised less often once you learn the power of ALT looking. Until they force perspective into first person mode, you need to learn to use ALT look to keep a better overall track of your surroundings.
    3: They're not wrong about a kill camera. That'd be really helpful and would be a great feature to be added.
    4: They're blatantly ignoring the luck factor in Friday the 13th. Luck in placement of needed items. Luck in the draw of who your teammates are and what their proficiency is. Luck of which player becomes Jason and which Jason you're up against which can drastically change the game. There's a lot of luck involved in that game too.
    5: In regards to the luck factor of PUBG, you can drastically improve your odds by understanding the map and determining good drop choices. If you drop in hot spots (School, Military Base, apartments) then yes, your chances for dying drastically increase. But if you learn how to increase your drop distance from the flight path and learn what smaller areas of the map still have decent resources, you can fly very far from the flight path and load up easily.
    6: Keep your audio up. Many times during this video I see either Jack or Rich getting into an engagement in a house or apartment where they should have heard the person stomping around. In fact during the 16:10 mark I heard the door to the house open up and I was expecting whoever was playing to be watching the stairs rather than the window at that point.
    Again, I respect Jack and Rich and I'm not saying their opinions are wrong. I'm just saying the game does take some skill and practice to play at a different level.

      So you respect people who are paid to review games, yet take no effort to do any research, do not even learn the key commands for the game, shows no consistency between reviews, do not learn the game, make no attempt at strategy and will insult and misrepresent a game just because they show no skill in playing it and are frustrated by dying?

    • @korlack7276
      @korlack7276 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      1: They're not really "Paid" to review games. They make some money off of Twitch and TH-cam views, but not nearly as much as they make off the RedLetterMedia stuff. This is more of a passion project for Rich and Jack.
      2: Most of their review came down to it just not being their cup of tea. Rich admitted he didn't really like multiplayer games that much to begin with, which is the crux of this experience to begin with. He did admit that it was better than his experience with games like COD or Battlefront, and that means something if you're familiar with Rich's past gaming experience.
      3: My only real beef with the review was their insistence with how much they claim Luck plays in the game, and to be honest their not entirely wrong. I just don't think luck plays AS MUCH of a role as they think it does, but it's still a factor in the game.
      Finally you obviously take issue with their review style, so how much time do you feel is appropriate in playing the game before giving a review of the game? It's an opinion piece and this isn't really their full time job.

    • @amazingatheist4751
      @amazingatheist4751 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Agree to disagree with being paid reviewers. Rich loves to say he hates certain genres and games, but look at the games he plays and enjoys and this is simply not true. He loves multiplayer games that are not heavily skill based so that make him feel like a good gamer. He has no problem bashing newbs in F13, but then learning curve is a problem in other games, there is no consistency.
      It is not about how much time they play, but they could at least learn the controls. When told how to loot Rich states that he prefers his way, totally arrogant because he has never played before. When told that they have to calibrate the scope when sniping they just ignore it and continue to aim shots that could not possibly hit.
      When told to find vehicles, they complain that they have to always run to the next circle. When told sound is important, they ignore it. When enemies are clearly seen, they complain that death is instant and luck based. When they are told that it is important to remain unseen, they run around in wide open spaces with zero cover and then bitch that they get shot at.
      When they are informed of proper tactics, they go hide in a bush and pretend that a strategy that does not improve their chances of winning is somehow good and indicative of a bad game because they chose to be boring.
      How about take a couple of minutes to familiarise yourself with the controls and follow the basic strategy that they were aware of and chose to ignore at every opportunity, learn from your mistakes and stop being totally disingenuous by hiding in bushes.

    Shooters are fast and competitive and require quick thinking and quick action. They're probably the closest thing to real-life sports that you can get in video games. I don't think Rich or Jack ever really developed the taste or skill for those kinds of games.
    I used to play the shit out of the old COD games, had a lot of fun. Now that I'm older, I don't do as well because I don't have the time and I'm not as fast/autistic as I used to be. Still fun though.

    PuBG in general is something completely different from what I think both Jack and Rich have ever played before, Dayz and all of it's spinoffs require you to listen very carefully and minimize the sound you generate, otherwise someone will sneak up on you.
    Exploiting the third person camera to it's fullest and a good awareness of your surroundings are also crucial. But I agree that the game is at its most fun when played duo or squad.

  • @FreelanceSeven
    @FreelanceSeven 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think, for me, the game is just having fun. You can do random shit like drive at people spouting Mad Max Fury Road lines or whacking someone with a frying pan.
    I also believe the greatest part is that, as soon as you die, you can just join another match immediately.
    I'll admit, it has problems. It definitely needs a kill cam, most definitely. The map could be a little less dead. And I believe a 50 on 50 match would be awesome. It's still in early release, and I am hoping for more, but I totally understand the video's points.

    I am not going to say you are playing it wrong but I will say I started having more fun when I stopped playing to win and started playing for fun. Yes it is way safer and a smarter strat to drop in away from people and hide and run for 20 min. but then you get a ton of those sniped deaths. If you just bomb out near the start of the drop time you get in quick, fun firefights either win (heal up and run) or you die and just jump in again with like 3 minutes invested in that game. From there go looking for trouble not hiding. You will get more experence playing and then when you do want to go for a win do your version of the hiding thing but when its time to smash everyone together you will have the skill to come out on top.
    TLDR: Don't hide, fight as much as you can. You may lose more but who cares it's way more fun!

    The game creates some moments of hilarity, tension, anger and accomplishment. That's the allure of PUBG to the player. Each drop is different, and there is always a chance you will be the last one, among 100 people, left standing. That's the appeal, and it is quite a unique and addicting appeal. Is it the most fair or balanced game so that everyone can have the same enjoyable experience where they left feeling like they accomplished something? No. But that's the whole point. It is damn hard winning a game, and when you do, it is a wonderful feeling.
    The gunplay is extremely satisfying, from the good sound audio to the recoil and ragdoll physics. The optimization of the game is the only glaring negative i can think of right now. As you need a pretty beefy system to even get a consistent 100+fps. Also, you dictate your own experience. If you feel the need to camp in a bush for 30 minutes cause you are not confident in your twitch reflexes, then you will have a pretty boring and drab experience. You can play aggressive and almost always find people to shoot at if you know where to go. I'm only 9 mins through this review and decided to stop to write a better one about this intriguing and original game.

Each game has just copied the formula and changed small things, adding/removing survival elements, NPC threats (zombies), and ripping the Hunger Games / Battle Royale elements into their shitty buggy clones. The reality is that all of these games have two types of players. The ones trying it out for fun or dragged into it by friends, who get tired of it after a while and move on. Then there's the guys who play NOTHING other than the Battle Royale flavor of the week and get mad whenever their game is criticized.

    I hate games that deal you a losing hand, then punish you for not having a straight (also see FTL, Slay The Spire). When I was young, and actually enjoyed shooters, everybody started out equal, and camping was considered a tactic for unskilled cowards. PUBG is a die roll to not get screwed by bad position, another die roll to not get screwed on gear, then whoever got the best roll and/or camps the best spot generally wins. Of course skill is a factor, but I didn't come here to shoot craps.

    Open a door and somebody is pointing a gun at you and kills you? Next time open the door and peek.
    Running across open fields gets you sniped at? Maybe take the extra time to move through the trees, or hell even grab a vehicle.

  • @DeMomcalypseLive

    I think one aspect that could fix the instant, unknown quick sudden deaths is to crank up the bullet sponging of the players. Make it fairly difficult to aim a sniper rifle by adding bullet drop and wind resistance to give a sense of skill in game. Depending on the type of gun, they can do different points of damage. A type of armor can give you different points of armor that slightly reduce the damage of bullets, though it will not protect against melee attacks (if any exists). When low on health, your health regenerates up to 25% of the maximum health bar. Food is scarce and will only slowly and slightly restore your health per health item. Med kits will heal more and faster, but you need to crouch down to use it and you need to equip it to use it. It'll take about 3-5 accurate bullets to the head to kill anyone (will vary between pistol, smg, semi-auto rifle and fully automatic rifle). One shot from an accurate sniper shot. And two close range shotgun shell blasts to the torso (Shotgun fire rate is piss slow). Instead of a sudden shrinkage of the circle on the map, the circle will, instead, gradually grow small. The circle will shrink faster, depending on how long the game has gone on or how long the game has gone without a player death. If any of these mechanics or stats are in the game, or have been implemented, then comment below. I am just going from this video, I have not played the game, myself as of yet.

      Arma wasn't designed to be satisfying to kill enemies. PUBG took those same qualities, repackaged it into its own separate game, and didn't quite understand that they were marketing an almost identical experience to the Arma version.

    I used to play a lot of Battlefield, probably not gonna get this game because of their loot-crate announcement. But can identify multiple mistakes Rich and Jack made while playing. Things like running straight lines over hills, not going from cover to cover, not pausing to look and listen, attacking as soon as they can instead of waiting for the optimal time etc etc.
    The easiest way explain it to someone unfamiliar to it is to compare it to something like Mario Kart or Poker. For some it seems like a 100% luck, yet you'll always see the same people in the top 10. Then when you watch a video or stream of these players playing you'll realize that their not playing an action game. It's almost entirely a strategy game to them, juggling dozens of variables and concentrating more than most people do at an exam.
    Just my 2 cents. I however moved on to more narrative based games rather than the OCD types.

  • @anabukashka
    @anabukashka 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The thing with PUBG that i noticed, i have not played it btw.
    Jack and Rich are complaining about what AVERAGE player (and your average is always a solo noob) feels when playing the game.
    But what happens when average player dies in PUBG? He learns something (even when he thinks he didn't) and then he FINDS ANOTHER MATCH.
    What happens when the same player dies in Friday the 13th? He has to wait UNTIL THE END OF THE GAME.
    So from the design point of view PUBG is probably better. Simply because there is less wasted play time, and it translates to less chance for player to get bored.
    Frustration will always be a HUGE part of any difficult game for some people, and player versus player MP games are extremely difficult because of the constant competition.
    But your frustration does not make the game bad, you may hate the game so much when you died "unfairly", but you were in fact ENGAGED that means the game is not bad. After all the frustration and anger are a heavy emotions that simply cannot happen if the player is not engaged.
    And if H1Z1 and PUBG designs actually manage to keep the players engagement levels high while the players do nothing but stand or lie still for 10 to 5 minutes, then the design is probably not bad, pretty good even.
    The only problem i see is that the peak of popularity (and the PR campaign) for these games have happened when they were in an unfinished state - this is a really bad trend, even worse is the fact that people don't seem to notice that and do not complain. Everyone would have benefitted if PUBG was completed before it's release and marketing campaign, massive user testing could have been done vie timed betas instead of early access release.

      There are crap games that lean on this idea that they're "fun with friends" because everything is, yes. Your universal argument doesn't make sense, however. It completely ignores all genres where teamwork is part of the fun. There is a fundamental difference between solo and group matches of PUBG, where constant communication and teamwork is the entire point. This is where it differs from all of those soft-RPG loot grinders (Borderlands, Warframe, etc.) where you can play a mediocre experience alone or a nearly identical experience with three friends. Playing PUBG with a group doesn't distract you from a bad game, it becomes a different game, much like the difference between 1v1 and group matches in For Honor.

  • @LeoSkyro
    @LeoSkyro 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Rich, while a bit biased because he doesnt like the game, fair enough, has raised some good points.
    - this is not a survival game. it's BR, no survival elements, no crafting, food etc
    - this game does have a problem in the fact that it encourages a more passive approach.
    Mind you that this goes down as you go up in skill (as you start you're queue with noobs, there is a sort of a ranking), but it's
    still a thing. Not much that can be done, afterall a BR is not an FPS where you run around, and First Person Mode has pretty
    much nullified camping's advantage. It's pretty fun.
    - there is a luck aspect, loot, circle posish, positioning. but you gotta keep in mind that you may find yourself in the circle
    from the start, that doesnt necessarily mean that you are in a high loot zone, and if you just stand around in the middle you
    ARE gonna get pinched from all sides.
    As soon as you get down your first priority should not be to get to the nearest house, but to find a vehicle and get to a high
    loot zone asap.
    Some correction I had to make to things you said, which are mostly due to you not having had enough time with the actual game, no fault on your side:
    - "you don't know the best places to drop off": loot is not completely randomized: there are high and low loot areas, for
    example go to the Military Base, Georgopol or most of the cities you're more likely to get good loot than in some house in
    the middle of nowhere. there is random variation among those.
    -the circle being a flaw: I dont think it's a game design flaw when you get the circle on the opposite side of the island. IF you
    decide to have a game with a restricting randomized circle, it's gonna appear somewhere, and some people are gonna draw
    the short end of the RNG stick.
    Tip: there are plenty of vehicles around roads, so you dont really have to run all the time.
    Having said that, there's still some work that could be done on the circle's positioning and mechanics.
    - an issue with the "pointlessness" of it all and the fact that you dont realize how you died and you're just gonna get sniped
    randomly etc:
    well, rich doesnt like shooters, that's settled, so point taken there. I do believe that the appeal of this, and other shooting
    games, is the competitiveness and excitement aspect: exactly BECAUSE you can die any second in one second, you're
    gonna be on edge and super careful, making your eventual victory feel much better, much more earned than in other cases.
    secondly, you should be able to realize where you got killed from, and if it's a super far sniper then that's your answer, doesnt
    really matter if you see a kill cam or not, you're gonna learn from your mistakes just by observing your actions.
    It's really easy to die in this game due to poor positioning: this game more than others, really requires tactical knowledge of
    movement, knowledge of timing, geography of the map, how to use defilades and natural barriers, all stuff that you're gonna
    learn gradually.
    It's really much about tactics and reflexes: most deaths can be avoided. "If someone happens to be behind you" you should
    have spotted them when you ALT-look around like you should do basically continuosly, just looking forward is setting you
    up for getting shot in the bum.
    You actually can't "get very far with the luck aspect and almost no skill", I mean you can in low ranks and when you're just getting started, but
    with good players you're gonna get destroyed.
    I think Jack should give it some more time, he seems to have some promise to really enjoy it once he understands how it works overrall, since it does have pretty steep learning curve.
    Most of his grievances are the same I had when I started out, and most of them have been resolved, by learning, skill (some of those clips where rough, lol) or updates.
    I gotta highlight, this game is really an outlier in the dev team's commitment to updates, I shit on this game a lot online but they keep fixing a lot of shit.
    Jack, this helped me and countless people get "better" and learn not to just be super passive: drop in populated areas, that'll teach you to fuck shit up under pressure.
    Rich...he's probably not gonna like it anyway, I dont like RTS's, he doesnt like shooters, to each their own.
    I gotta say, the "it's just bullshit, you're gonna die anyway" somewhat remains, but as you get better and learn to do less stupid shit, and boy did I do a lot of it without realizing in the start, that goes away quite a bit.
    And yes, play duos or squads, 1000 times more fun, even though I do like me some lone wolf action.

    This review is very "unsatisfying". As with any game, you must practice and figure things out. You can start out on any part of the map and basically always have a vehicle within the first circle to get from A to B. Also, landing near the circle is not always the best place to be initially. Smart players will purposely spend 2 or 3 circles looting and take boosts to survive with enough room to make the circle. If you are sick of being camped and people having the drop on you, play FPP. I understand that by the time of the review there probably wasn't FPP like it is now. Long stretches of nothing, if you don't choose to land in a popular zone, or near one.
    The game is not for everyone, but there is a reason it is being played by so many people.

    I'm surprised you didn't mention it's early access - kill cams on solo are coming, and first person servers just came out - changing the game (especially when it comes to "cheap" deaths). A lot of the deaths can feel "cheap" if you're new to the game and don't understand what you did wrong. Running out in the open, dropping without a plan, dropping in a heavily populated area, not getting a vehicle - these are all big mistakes that new players make but aren't obvious. The most important thing in the game is positioning, and after that then guns make a huge difference - determining if you can/can't make a kill against another player.
    I like the game because I can choose how my early game will go - if I just want to run and gun deathmatch I'll drop in the first city or school or something. If I want to scavenge and snipe I'll drive to a remote town.
    Entering a town with open doors or hearing footsteps/shots nearby when you're looting is some of the most tense gaming experiences I've had, and coming close to winning is always exhilarating. I got my first chicken dinner pretty early on but it still felt amazing.
    Saying all that I wouldn't recommend it to everyone - it's not a typical shooter and I can see a lot of people being bored with it. I'd recommend it more to the type of player who likes STALKER. The slow and tense buildups make the kills all the more earned.
