  • In this installment we replace the oil pressure sensor in the salvage title C5 Corvette. The best part is watching what happens that shows how we know the sensor is failing.

    The oil pressure gage on my FRC has been reading 80 pounds for 10 years. I guess now that I know how to fix it, thanks to you, I can't think of a good excuse not to fix it. Thanks.

      If I were to do it again I'd absolutely cut the access hole also. Make the job a lot easier and if it needs done again later you'd be a lot happier.😎 Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Thanks for the tip, I'll cut the hole. I rebuilt my torch red FRC from a total, my last one out of 8 C5's and it's the keeper. Ten years ago, I bought it for $3,900.00 and it had 40 K miles on it. Now it has 70 K. It was totally fucked up. I had to replace every body part except the roof (I've done that twice with ZO6's) and the doors. Also had to cut the frame off at the firewall and weld a junkyard one on. All 20 points to measure from in the manual are within 1/16". I love my FRC. Also, my ZO6's would go from 0-100 in ten seconds. This one takes 11 seconds so big deal with the 10 seconds. A couple months ago my next door neighbor followed me across the interstate bridge to Hood River, OR and onto the freeway and egged me into a race with his Tesla. We raced from 50 MPH to 100 and I blew his doors off..... by about 30 feet. Never got out of 3rd. gear. The race ended as we were coming up on traffic and the RPM limiter kicked in at 6,000 RPM. He was shocked.

      IMO the FRC C5 is one of the best looking Corvettes ever made. I should have bought the salvage C5 I worked on a couple years ago and done the conversion that @JWsGarage did on his.

      It is not an easy job but it can be done. Without the cowl being modified you'll have to remove the fuel rails to access the sending unit.

      shop rate labor for a mechanic is about one hour when I goggled it, I had heard it was simple. So DIY is very possible , if you have the tools. IF you have to buy tools , just have it done and get a relocation kit installed. I did mine myself, but it certainly took me longer than one hour , since I had to both learn the job and produce flawless results on my very first attempt, despite being very unfamiliar with the work.

      some speculate that over tightening the sensor, because it uses a crush washer to prevent leaks, causes the micro chip inside to fail , so probably a part best torqued in correctly .

      Maybe I wasn't clear in the beginning of the video about the fact the cowl was cut before we got the car. I do explain at about the 9 minute mark that the cowl had been modified. At the end of the video I discussed that without modifying the cowl you do have to remove the fuel rails and that it is not an easy task that way. Thanks for your feedback and for watching.

    • @YellowJacketGarage
      @YellowJacketGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your oil pressure should follow the 10 psi per 1000 rpm off idle and at least 25 psi at idle. The pegged gage is probably a bad sensor. Please let me know how your repair turns out and don't hesitate to reach out with questions. Thanks for watching!

    Can the sensor cause a oil burning smell?

    • @YellowJacketGarage
      @YellowJacketGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Only if there's a leak. My thoughts on the smell would be a possible valve cover or other seal that is letting a drip get on the exhaust manifold. Are there any oil stains under your car where you normally park?
      Replacing valve cover gaskets/seals isn't a real tough job, just make sure you follow the proper sequence and torque spec...they don't take much and most people over torque thinking they need to be super tight. Hope this helps and please let me know if you have further questions. Thanks for watching!
