I have had my OBM for a very long time. It has traveled with me over great distances. Packed in panniers, backpacks, on snowmachines, bush aircraft, canoes, ATV's etc. The design, functionality and quality of materials and construction have held up to use and oops without problem. But I take care of my equipment so it will take care of me. It is a palette and box that serves me well. At the time of purchase it was a significant chunk of change. No regrets. I have seen and inspected other pochade boxes. I am not tempted to down grade. The tool, the tech, works. A note: the side palette extension is something I use regularly, as a palette extension. Painted gray just like the main palette section, I use it to mix on when I am reserving the main palette area for smaller but more numerous amounts of color. I use a proprietary brass box that mounts on the side for holding my brushes, another brass tray type box on the other side for my charcoal, knives etc., a proprietary paper towel holder and brass clips for my container of solvent.
Funny the canvas holding mechanism on the open M Box is one of the things I like best, as nothing touches the front of the canvas. I have the largest box, and purchased flat S hooks to hang over the side to hang my brush cleaner/turps can from, and bought a brush hanger and paper towel hanger that fits perfectly over the lip of the box. The only improvement I would like to see is a stable attachment to the tripod to eliminate shakiness when painting. I painted up on a high hill at the beach in France, and had to lean into the box to keep the heavy wind from blowing it over, and keeping the easel steady. Though the tripod I used had a hook in the middle to hang my backpack from, to keep the center of gravity, and spikes at the ends of the tripod legs, the wind was just to strong. Other than the box sitting on top of the tripod, making it shake somewhat, and the rounded screws on the bottom, I like everything about this box. My secondary easel is a small french easel for painting closer to my vehicle, as there is nothing steadier in strong wind, and I don't need to carry anything else as it all packs inside.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts about this easel. Can you please also share your thoughts on New Wave u.go Plein Air | Anywhere Pochade Box? I am thinking to buy u.go or day tripper easel?? Still thinking 💭 🤔as I am not planning to do a lot of plein air paintings just once in while at least for right now. I always find your reviews very beneficial. Thanks 🙏
I don't have an OBM but I've always admired it. However, that sloppy hinge placement would really grind me gears ! Very surprised about that. I'm using the medium size Ugo at the mo. Being a bit old fashioned I was somewhat skeptical about the whole magnet thing at first, but so far everything is going really nice with the Ugo.
ok, I have to say something about the Daytripper and Open Box M which I both own. You make it seem like all you need to do with the Daytripper is open the flaps and start painting. Well you aren't exactly correct there. Since the Daytripper comes in two pieces it is a bit more work than that. So while you are complaining about the open box M being tedious to open, I find the same with the Daytripper. Oh and one more thing. Try moving the Daytripper easily once opened to set up at a new location. If you're setup but realize hey, I need to adjust my location to maybe 10' ' not so easy. With Open box M you just pick it up and move to quickly adjust your position, but with the Day tripper you need to remove it from the tripod and close up your turps can and brushes on the flaps need to be packed, making this such an aggravating process. It really sucks! Several times I tried moving it without removing the Daytripper and it fell off and my turps went with it. So pros and cons to everything right? I just find your bias a bit much at times. I own several of these easels as well. Open box M is just one of many systems for an artist to get for plein aire painting. Maybe Daytripper rings your bells. Congrats Can wait to see what your easel invention will be like. JUST MY OPINION.
Bette, I'm not saying that Daytripper IS THE BEST easel in the world. I would say that the best easel is not designed yet... and I do not think that the easel which will fit all artists' needs will ever be designed. We all have different needs and requirements. All easels are good if you enjoy using it! My experience with Open Box M, unfortunately, was not good compared to Daytripper or any other easels that I have... that all. Daytripper has a lot of problems as well... but I see much more Daytrippers on every competition I'm visiting compare to M box... just saying :)
But again... my point - if you enjoy using what ever easel you are using - this easel is THE BEST for you because it is helping you create the beauty of art to change this world!
Ok, I agree with the best one has not been built yet. I think people like to buy the latest toy and that's why you see so many DT. Just remember that you are reviewing a product some of us like so try not to be so critical. That's all I'm saying. Cheers
Thank you for sharing. Was wondering about this easel. Now I am very interested in your design and the approximate price if you are comfortable releasing the info at this time.
Hi Shelia, My easel is similar to a DayTriper easel with some modifications for easy use. How much it will cost I'm not sure yet... still collecting the data, it will take time to get it out. I still have to make a decision on the main frame material. But I'm going to show the prototype as soon as I will get it back.
The comment from Oleg Glazunov was "you explain it like it's a spaceship" Lol... I think for us... Plein air painters, it is more complicated than a simple spaceship lol.
This company is HORRIBLE to work with - promise to deliver and then never do!!! Super frustrating - they "ghost" you after you pay....just be ready to have to pull your money back.
Thank you for making this. Would you happen to know the name of the hinge used on the side of the box and size? Thank you!
Great video im looking forward to more thx

I just realized that I made a mistake on the mark of 12:34 ... I said 5 and 3/4" instead of 7 and 3/4" ...lol

Looking to buy an Open Box M

good video, quick question if you have time, what tripod are you using?
Yes I use the open box one on my desk for small daily paintings. Hard if you want to use a big panel- the arms can get in the way.
